NCC ANNUAL TRAINING CAMP
1 Goa Naval Unit organised a 10 day Annual Training Camp for NCC cadets at Our Lady of Lourdes High School, Valpoi, Goa, from 23rd October 2017 to 01st November 2017. 426 cadets from schools across Goa participated in the camp.
23 cadets from Vidya Vikas Academy got an opportunity to attend the camp. Training in special subjects was conducted during the 10 days camp namely firing, rigging, ship modeling and drill. Demonstrations of fire safety drill, snake show, road safety; talk on health, hygiene and first aid was held for the NCC cadets.
The cadets participated in various games such as cross country, volley ball, football etc. They also showcased their talents in the cultural programme held at the camp site.
The cadets had a once in a life time experience which helped them develop qualities of character, courage, comradeship, discipline, leadership, secular outlook, spirit of adventure & sportsmanship and the ideals of selfless service among the youth to make them useful citizens. PARTICIPATION IN THE NATIONAL LEGAL SERVICE DAY AWARENESS CAMPAIGN 2017-18
On the occasion of LEGAL SERVICE DAY, which is observed on 9th November, every year, the National Legal Service Authority has devised a campaign titled “Connecting to Serve” to be carried out from 09th November to 18th November 2017, for making the public aware about the various functions and activities of Legal Services Authorities and availability of free legal service.
As part of the campaign, the Goa State Legal Authority in collaboration with the District Legal Service Authority, South Goa and Taluka Legal Service committee Salcete, held an awareness rally starting from District Session Court, Margao upto Margao Muncipal

Council via Abade Faria Road on 9th November 2017 at around 1000 hrs.
20 students from classes 8 and 9 enthusiastically participated in the rally. They were at the forefront of the rally. Yoga Teacher Mr. Omana Kuttan G accompanied the students. Mr. Bosco G F Roberts, Seretary, DLSA, South Goa, Margao acknowledged the active participation of the students and staff member and will be issuing a certificate to the school.

CHILDREN’S DAY
Vidya Vikas Academy celebrated Children’s Day with great enthusiasm and fervour for the students of Pre-Primary, Primary, Secondary and Senior Secondary Section. The theme of the day was “Children are Special”
The programme began with a prayer service and hymn conducted by the teachers.
The teachers made the day special as they had a lot of fun filled activities lined up for the children which included enactment of nursery rhymes, fashion show, colourful dances and songs. The spot prizes throughout the programme kept the excitement rolling. Children were enthralled with the magic show, the appearance of their favourite mascots like Mickey and Minnie, Winnie the Pooh, Doremon Tom and Jerry kept the tempo up. The demonstration of balloon sculpting was also very exciting.
In order to give value add & to enhance the classroom experience for students of Class 1 to 5, VVA has introduced a variety of mind enriching age appropriate games in every division. These can be played during free / substitution period & also during games period.
Snacks were distributed and the programme ended with a jam session for children who danced and rocked to their favourite numbers. It was a memorable day for the children.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF TOLERANCE

The International Day for Tolerance is an annual observance declared
by UNESCO in 1995 to generate public awareness of the dangers
of intolerance. It is observed on 16 November.
A special assembly was organised by Class 9A to celebrate
International Day of Tolerance on 16th November 2017.
The assembly started with a prayer service conducted by (students of Class 9) Vaishnavi, Mavisha and Kinmin.
Miss Shreeya coordinated the assembly. Miss Dipika enlightened the students about the importance of
International Day of Tolerance. An inspiring quotes on tolerance was presented by Arya, Shravani, Anjali and
Vaishnavi. A poem on tolerance was recited by Raj Phaldessai. Posters were also displayed in the school hall.
The assembly concluded with a presentation of a video on the tale of tolerance.

UNITED NATIONS DAY
The United Nations Day was celebrated at Vidya Vikas Academy on 13th November 2017, by the students of Classes 8 and 9 with the assistance from Tr. Reeva Rodrigues and Tr. Tanula Cotta in the school hall to commemorate 72ndAnniversary of the United Nations. The theme of the assembly was “peace”, as the main objective of United Nations is to maintain international peace and security. The programme began with an introduction by Miss Nadia D’silva of Class 9B followed by a short prayer. The students from the Life Skills Resource Room added a touch of glamour by singing ‘we are the world’ song. Clyde Rodrigues of Class 9C presented a power point presentation on the working of the United Nations which was then followed by a speech by Llyeton Colaco of Class 9C. Alston and his group enthralled the onlookers by their mime on terrorism. Nash and his group conveyed the message to stop destruction and spread love through the “Earth song” by Micheal Jackson and “One Love” by Bob Marley. The programme concluded with a short quiz by Ronisha Paes.

STATE LEVEL PAINTING COMPETITION
‘Save Electricity’ – A state level painting competition organized by Powergrid Corporation of India was held at Colvale on the 14th of November 2017.
Three students from Vidya Vikas Academy, Anjali Choudhary(9A), Sandra Fernandes (9B)and Reuel Rodrigues(5A) were chosen (among the top 50 students all over Goa) to represent our school at the state level competition.
Anjali and Sandra further did us proud by winning in the top 10 category(State Level) and were awarded cash prizes of Rs. 5000/- each. Congratulations to all the three winners.

AUTHOR MS. SCHARADA DUBEY VISIT VVA
A well known author, Ms. Scharada Dubey, visited Vidya Vikas Academy , on Wednesday, 15th November 2017. She had an inter-active session, with the students from classes 5 to 8, in the smart room of the higher secondary section. The duration of the session was from 11.55 a.m. to 12.45 noon. Prior to her visit, some of the students from the above classes, purchased the book authored by her “The best days of my life – short stories of famous personalities.”
The session began with the introduction of the author, Ms. Dubey by Tr. Jennifer. Thereafter, Ms. Dubey, explained in brief, about her personal experiences on a couple of incidents, including winning the international award for securing the first place in story writing, among the commonwealth countries, when she was merely 13 years of age. This was followed by the inter-active session between the author and the students, who asked her very interesting and intelligent questions, which she responded to enthusiastically. She also questioned the students, about the personalities, mentioned in her book, as quoted above. It was an interesting session.
Later, the author personally autographed each student’s novel at the end of the session. A vote of thanks was expressed by Tr. Sanjyot and

a ‘Thank you’ card was prepared and handed over to the author, by Leal Furtado, a student from class 7C. Refreshments were then served to the author. The session ended at 12.45 noon. It was a very enjoyable and enlightening session, enjoyed by one and all, including the author, who appreciated the children’s response and enthusiasm.

SPELLING BEE COMPETITION
Institute Menezes Braanza organised ‘National Book Week’ from 18th November 2017 to 24th November 2017 to inculcate and reinforce reading, speaking and thinking skills.
As part of this celebration, a Spelling Bee Competition was held on 18th November 2017. Zara Dias and Nicole Lourenco of Class 10 participated in the competition. After the preliminary round only 8 students in order of merit were chosen for the finals. Zara Dias did us proud by winning the third place. All the students who participated were given participation certificates.

ROAD SAFETY AWARENESS PROGRAMME BY YAMAHA MOTORS
A “Child Safety Programme” was organized at Vidya Vikas Academy by Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt. Ltd on 20th November 2017 to create road safety awareness among the students. It was attended by students of Class 3, 4 and the students enrolled for the Road Safety Patrol. The following points were explained to the students: Meaning of traffic signals and Zebra crossing Advantages to check Right and Left before crossing road Tips for Road safety Importance of Helmet The team ensured that the session was lively through their interaction with the students. The visuals projected on the screen and the music entertained the students. The entry of the mascot ‘Zippy- cartoon character and the crown of Zippy was exciting for the students.

ONE NATION READING TOGETHER – AN INITIATIVE BY SCHOLASTIC PUBLICATIONS
24th November is observed as “One Nation Reading Together” by Scholastic Publications. To mark this occasion, a small programme was held at Vidya Vikas Academy on 24th November 2017 at 12.00 noon. The Programme was conducted by students of Class 7C. Winnaliese Pereira read out the importance of the day and a Pledge written by renowned author Jerry Pinto was recited by Leal Furtado on the PA system. Later in the Library, the students of Class 7C were given books of different authors to read for 20 minutes. Students of Class 10 C also read rapid readers in their class with Tr. Sanjyot. Children wrote about their favourite authors, books and thoughts on the Graffiti Poster. Principal Joble Bijoy, Vice Principal Tania Monteiro, Tr. Marina D’Costa attended the Programme.

ECO ACHIEVERS QUIZ
‘Eco Achievers Quiz’ organized by Rotary Club Vasco Da Gama and SAVEUS was held at Mount Litera Zee School, Marmugao , Goa , on the 17th of November 2017.
Nine students from Vidya Vikas Academy, Leal Furtado (7C), Deep Pai Raiturker (6A), Siddhant Parab (5C), Walusha Fernandes (7B), Raissa D’Souza (6B), Ishayu Samant (5B), Anushka Mitra (7B), Yutasha Egipsy (6C) and Manmayi Lotlikar (5A) represented our school at the state level competition.
The students were divided into three groups each comprising of a student of class 5, class 6 and class 7.
Our school won the second and the third place in the competition. Group 1 – Anushka Mitra (7B), Yutasha Egipsy (6C) and Manmayi Lotlikar (5A) won the second place
Group 2- Leal Furtado (7C), Deep Pai Raiturker (6A) and Siddhant Parab (5C) won the third place.

VVA STUDENTS PARTICIPATE AT BAL MELA HELD AT BIG FOOT
The 14th annual Bal Mela, a full-day program organized by the Jan Ugahi Trust in association with the Big Foot Trust and Vikalp Trust was held on November 26, at the Big Foot Sanskriti Kendra in Lotoulim.
It was hosted in honour of underprivileged children from various parts of Goa and promoted the adage ‘Let children be children.’ The theme of the festival was “You Are Special and Unique”. About 1600 children from various orphanage homes and institutions attended the event. Students from numerous schools and colleges from South Goa volunteered their time at the Mela, operating stalls and serving food to the children. The objective of Vidya Vikas Academy to participate was to make their students realize how fortunate they were and how they could help in their little way towards the society. Gustav Sa, Prabhav Naik, Arya Bhagwat and Lean Goes along with Tr. Sonia Naik and Tr. Shaefali Lendhay put up a game stall and spend quality time with the children who visited the festival. Each student were given a packet of Tiger Biscuit. The money to buy the biscuits was collected by students of Class 6 to 9.

DANCE MANIA – ACTIVITY FOR NOVEMBER – CLASS 1 TO 5
The monthly activity for November 2017 ‘Dance Mania’ was conducted for the students of Class 1 to 5 by their respective Class teachers.
The children participated with a lot of zeal, fervour and enthusiasm. They danced to a song of their choice, choreographed by them for about 1 and 1/2 minutes. Five students from each class were awarded a merit certificate based on the following criteria: 1) Rhythm and grace 2) Expression and spontaneity 3) Choreography and costume It was a pleasure to see the budding dancers take on the stage and showcase their talent! WORLD SCIENCE DAY FOR PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT
World Science Day for Peace & Development, is celebrated annually on 10th November to enlighten the students and raise awareness about the uses of science and technology in today’s world for the betterment of our society and at the same time promoting peace world over. The 21st century has seen a rapid growth in science and technology which has made the world a global village. The assembly started with a short speech on “World Science Day for Peace & Development” and then a documentary video was shown to enlighten the students with more information about the same. One of the student shared the objectives of the World Science Day for Peace and Development with the audience to strengthen public awareness on the role of science for peaceful and sustainable societies. The assembly was conducted by the students of Class XII A and was coordinated by Sir Akshay Chari.

ANNUAL SCIENCE EXHIBITION 2017-2018
The annual Sr. Secondary Science Exhibition was held on 11th November, 2017. The students of Class XI displayed their exhibits as a tribute to our former President of India, Late Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam.
The science exhibition is organized every year to encourage the students to present their skills and talents in the field of science and technology. Mr. Abhay Bhamaikar, CEO of Vibrant Skill Sets Solutions and organiser of Budding Scientist of India graced the occasion as the Chief Guest for the exhibition. Mr. Saieesh Gandhi, Agricultural officer in Department of Agriculture and IT Head at Entertainment Society of Goa was invited as the Guest Speaker. The program commenced with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp to invoke God’s blessings and offering a garland to the portrait of our late President Dr. A.P.J Abul Kalam as a mark of remembrance followed by a welcome address by the Principal Mrs. Joble Bijoy. In her speech she appreciated the efforts put in by the students to develop their innovative projects. She also encouraged them to develop a
scientific temper in solving various issues and difficulties faced by today’s generation with the help of Science and Technology in a more efficient and innovative ways. . Mast. Bradley Rodrigues introduced the Chief Guest Mr. Abhay Bhamaikar where as Ms. Surabhi Aswath acquainted the audience with the Guest Speaker Mr. Saieesh. Both the chief guest and the guest speaker were presented with a potted plant as a token of appreciation. Mr Abhay started off his speech by encouraging the students to be more enthusiastic towards using science to solve everyday problems. Mr. Abhay motivated the students with his speech. The science exhibition was inaugurated by Mr. Abhay Bhamaikar and Mr. Saieesh Gandhi. The exhibits were judged based on creativity, presentation, scientific thought and technical skills. Some of the major highlights of the exhibition included a Smart Interactive Mirror, Laser Communicator, Spot Welder, An Efficient 4-stroke engine, Bio-Degradable Plastic, etc Students of classes6-12 were invited to view the exhibits.

VVA SHINES AT REGIONAL LEVEL SCIENCE FAIR INSEF is a National Level Science Fair organized by the Science Society of India (SSI). In order to qualify for INSEF national fair, a participant first has to get a Gold medal (1st place) at the INSEF regional science fair which is jointly hosted by SSI and other institutions across 8 different states. Mast. Nikhil Raikar from Class XI-A had participated in the INSEF regional science fair held in Belgaum on 10th November 2017. This regional fair was jointly hosted by the SSI and the Rotary Club of

Belgaum. He presented his project, which was based on the synthesis of Bacterial Cellulose from green tea. There
were a total of 29 participants selected to compete at the fair who were shortlisted from 81 participants who had applied online. The other projects exhibited at the fair included a water proof robotic lunar rover which could climb stairs, bio-fuel generator, a Segway for disabled etc. The participants from distant states such as Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra had also participated in the fair. Mast. Nikhil Raikar won the 1st place and got selected to compete at the INSEF National Science Fair which will be held at Bangalore. At the national science fair the gold medalist from 8 different states will compete to qualify for India’s entry for the I-SWEEEP International Science Fair which will be held in the United States.

ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION By Isha Duri, XI-B
The students of class 11 participated in an essay-writing competition held at Loyola School, Comba on 8th October 2017. The competition was organized by the Forest Department, Govt of Goa and was themed on Nature and Wildlife. The topic was “Is saving animals more important than human development?” During this inter-school competition students had to pen down an essay based on the given topic in Marathi, Konkani or English. Writing boards, pens and snacks were provided to the students. All the participating students were awarded certificates.

WORLD FISHERIES DAY The World Fisheries Day, is celebrated annually on 21st November to enlighten the students and raise awareness about saving our
fisheries. ‘World Fisheries Day’ aims at drawing attention to this need of the hour wherein everyone plays their part in saving these marine creatures and ultimately saving our ecosystem at large.
Students of Class XII-A participated in this special assembly .The main motive of this assembly was to create awareness about over-fishing, and the measures that can be taken to save aquatic creatures from extinction. The assembly started with a welcome note by Surabhi Aswath followed by a short speech on “World fisheries Day” by Ayush Noorani. An informative presentation was presented by Bradley Rodrigues. A documentary video was also shown to enlighten the students with more information relating to the
same, followed by an interesting poem on fish by Tanha Ponnappan. The assembly was co-coordinated by Sir Akshay Chari.

PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
On 16th November,2017, the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, Govt. of Goa, organised a seminar for the students of Class 11 titled – “Power Of Personality”. It was a one day seminar held at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. The major goal of the seminar was to infuse in students a caring sense about their personalities and also to improve it. The seminar began on the base of discovering oneself and shaping
our personalities based on biological and social factors, guided by Dr. Andrea Coutinho, who is the head of the Department of Education at Sophia College. Improvement of our mindsets and identities were also given a lot of importance by her. Mrs. Caroline took over the session and stressed on the topic of self motivation. She left the students with a lot of motivating tips that will surely benefit them in motivating themselves towards perfection.

BEHTAR INDIA CAMPAIGN NDTV and DHFL Pramerica Life Insurance launched a campaign, Behtar India, to work towards planning a better future for India. The core thought of the campaign was to mobilise students, ordinary citizens and corporates to join a nationwide movement that focussed on the three main pillars of the campaign – Health, Hygiene, and Environment. It was a Pan India Competition in which more than 850 schools across India & 31000 students participated. Vidya Vikas Academy participated for this cause by registering themselves on Behtar India Portal. 256 students from school and senior secondary section registered and participated in this programme. The programme was divided into 3 goals.
Behtar Swasthya (Health) stage of the campaign aimed to raise funds to protect underprivileged children against Dengue. Our students collected & contributed Rs. 22,900/- for this stage. The second stage of the campaign focussed on Behtar Swachhta (Hygiene). In keeping the dream of a Swachh Bharat, this leg of the campaign focussed on clean-up drives across India to spread the message of cleanliness and raise awareness about health and hygiene. The students from Vidya Vikas Academy along with the Staff members undertook a Cleanliness drive at Paroda Panchayat Salcette Goa. Garbage & other waste collected was segregated & later handed over to the concerned officials for proper & scientific disposal. Further the students also spoke to the villagers on Behtar Swachtha & the importance of segregation of waste. A maintenance plan was submitted to Behtar India team and for which our school earned 170 points.
The third and the last stage of the campaign focused on Behtar Vatavaran (Environment). Here the students enthusiastically participated in the plantation drive along with the VVA staff and officials of the Forest Department for a greener future of our state. Plantation drive was carried out at Barcaim, Quepum taluka in South Goa. Different saplings like Assan (Pterocarpus maisupium) Sathon (Alstoni scholaris) karanj (Pongamia
pinnata), Mahagony (Switenia mahagony), Goting (Terminilia bellerica) etc were planted to support this cause. This initiative was highly appreciated by the Forest department officials and a total of 800 saplings were planted which earned 170 points for the school. Participating schools and students registered for this campaign and competed with each other to be on top of the leadership board based on their participation in the each of the stages of the Behtar India campaign. From raising funds for protecting people against Dengue for Behtar Swasthya, to cleaning up the surroundings for Behtar Swachhta and planting saplings for Behtar Vatavaran, there was something for everyone to do for a Behtar India. Developed as a path-breaking 360° campaign, Behtar India allowed citizens, school children and
corporates, to supplement each other’s efforts to drive awareness and initiate tangible progressive actions towards building a better India. At the end of the campaign Vidya Vikas Academy proudly stood at 12 in the Regional ranking & 40 at the All India Ranking.

CAREER SCOPE Class 12 students from Vidya Vikas Academy attended a one day seminar on ‘Career Scope’ organized by the Directorate of Youth & Sports affairs on 17th November 2017 at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. The event had guest speakers speaking about motivation and building self confidence in the students.
The first speaker was Mr. Pravin Sabnis . He spoke about having a passion and how one should not only have passion but should also work hard towards achieving it, at the same time he emphasized that individual happiness is very important. The second resource person spoke about trust i.e. how one should build trust and maintain healthy relationships. He conducted some activities to show this in which our student participated actively. Both the talks were very motivational and instilled a sense of self confidence and empathy in students. The students returned back with a positive attitude from the session.
