Manju Modur Tania Monteiro Joble Bijoy Editor Vice Principal Principal August 01, 2019 STATE CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY CELEBRATED AT VIDYA VIKAS ACADEMY As directed by the Department of Civil Services and Consumer Affairs (DCSCA), State Consumer Rights Day was celebrated enthusiastically at Vidya Vikas Academy. 25th June is observed as the State Consumer Rights Day. On this occasion the Consumer Awareness Club of Vidya Vikas Academy invited Adv (Mrs) Sharmili Audi Matha to talk to the students about Rights and Remedies under Consumer Protection Act 1986. The awareness talk was conducted on 29th July 2019, at 9.00 am, in the School Hall. 50 participants from classes 7 and 8 attended the talk. They were very keen on knowing more and more on the topic. They interacted well with the resource person. The talk was followed by the prize distribution ceremony to felicitate the winners of the essay writing and poster making competitions conducted previously. Poster making competition was conducted on 24th July 2019, from 2.00 pm to 3.00 pm. The students worked in groups, class wise and made attractive and informative posters on the topic: “Assert Rights, Pursue Remedies”. Teacher Hema Cacodcar selected the best poster based on presentation, adherence to the theme, layout/organisation and overall impact. The winning team was awarded the certificates and prizes. Essay writing competition was also conducted. The students were asked to write the essay on the topic: “Assert Rights, Pursue Remedies” in not more than 300 words. Tr. Sanjyot Bhembre and Tr. Sandra Mesquita, English Teachers, assessed the essays based on content, adherence to the theme, expression, organisation and accuracy. The best 3 essays were awarded the certificates and prizes.

STATE CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY CELEBRATED AT VIDYA VIKAS ACADEMY

As directed by the Department of Civil Services and Consumer Affairs (DCSCA), State Consumer Rights Day was celebrated enthusiastically at Vidya Vikas Academy. 25th June is observed as the State Consumer Rights Day. On this occasion the Consumer Awareness Club of Vidya Vikas Academy invited Adv (Mrs) Sharmili Audi Matha to talk to the students about Rights and Remedies under Consumer Protection Act 1986. The awareness talk was conducted on 29th July 2019, at 9.00 am, in the School Hall. 50 participants from classes 7 and 8 attended the talk. They were very keen on knowing more and more on the topic. They interacted well with the resource person. The talk was followed by the prize distribution ceremony to felicitate the winners of the essay writing and poster making competitions conducted previously.

Poster making competition was conducted on 24th July 2019, from 2.00 pm to 3.00 pm. The students worked in groups, class wise and made attractive and informative posters on the topic: “Assert Rights, Pursue Remedies”. Teacher Hema Cacodcar selected the best poster based on presentation, adherence to the theme, layout/organisation and overall impact. The winning team was awarded the certificates and prizes.

Essay writing competition was also conducted. The students were asked to write the essay on the topic: “Assert Rights, Pursue Remedies” in not more than 300 words. Tr. Sanjyot Bhembre and Tr. Sandra Mesquita, English Teachers, assessed the essays based on content, adherence to the theme, expression, organisation and accuracy. The best 3 essays were awarded the certificates and prizes.

Consumer Education is the right of every individual. The habit of being aware of one’s rights and responsibilities as a consumer should be inculcated from the beginning. The students enjoyed the activities and also benefited from them.

SCHOOL GIRLS LEARN SELF-DEFENCE AT VVA

Girls from classes 9 & 10 were given basic orientation on self defence techniques at Vidya Vikas Academy on 2nd August’ 2019 by Karv Maga Global Trainees Oscar and Merwyn.

The program was conducted by the school to provide confidence to the girls to counter eve teasing and bring awareness among the students to safe guard themselves from any threats.

Teaching school girl’s self defence techniques has become the need of the hour as they always face potential risk of being attacked when traveling in school buses, while walking or even when they are alone at home. Learning self defence strategies not only involves physically tackling threats to safety, but also the ability to identify and avoid potentially unsafe circumstances. These strategies cultivate in individuals the ability to remain alert yet calm at all times.

SPECIAL ASSEMBLY ON BAKRI-EID

Bakri – Eid also called Id – Ul -Adha, is one of the most important festival of the Muslims. It’s a festival of sacrifice.

A special assembly on Bakri – Eid was conducted at Vidya Vikas Academy by the Nursery B children co-ordinated by Tr. Cinija on 9th August 2019.

The significance and festivities were discussed. The highlight of the festival was a dance performance by the tiny tots on the song ‘Eid Mubarak’.

RAKSHA BANDHAN ASSEMBLY

Rakshabandhan is a well know festival of India. It is also called the festival of Rakhi. A festival that signifies the feeling of love, care and affection between brothers and sisters.

A special assembly on Rakshabandhan was conducted at Vidya Vikas Academy by Sr.Kg B students co-ordinated by Tr. Clece Crasto on the 13th August 2019.

The significance of the festival was explained by Tr. Clece which included the significance of the Aarti Thali.

The rituals of tying of a rakhi was demonstrated. The assembly concluded with the action song on ‘Phoolon ka Taro Ka’ by all the students.

DISPLAY OF ARMS AND AMMUNITION AT 3MTR

The NCC Cadets of Vidya Vikas Academy visited 3 MTR Camp at Rawanfond, Goa on 13th August 2019. Mr. Sidharth Faldesai NCC Officer and Teacher Balika Phaldesai accompanied the NCC cadets during their visit.

During the visit to 3 MTR Camp the cadets were shown the following activities and were briefed about them-:

Road Safety Awareness Different weapons like-Insas, LMG-Light

machine gun Different types of trenches(bunkers) and

tunnels Different ship models and their role in the navy Social activities of NCC Sand Model of Battlefield and explanation

The NCC cadets also performed some physical activities which included

Vertical Rope Climbing Horizontal Rope Climbing Toe Touch Rope Swinging etc.

The NCC 59 cadets of 1st and 2nd year participated they had a good experience and gained valuable knowledge. They were very impressed with the display of different weapons, models and trenches.

NATIONAL DEWORMING DAY

The National Deworming Day was held on the 13th of August 2019 and the mop up day was held in 16th of August 2019 with prior notice sent to the parents. The teachers were instructed how to administer the tablets and to record the data.

The total number of students administered the tablets on 13th August was 1226 and the number of students that were administered the tablet on the mop up day was 91. The tablets remaining with the school will be administered to the staff.

WEALTH OUT OF WASTE

The wealth out waste activity on the theme ‘Rakhi making’ was held on 13th and 14th of August for classes 1-5 in their respective classes. All the students participated in this activity enthusiastically.

The best five rakhis which were made out of waste materials were selected from each class on the basis of neatness, creativity and overall presentation.

This activity was a perfect platform for creative minds to meet their colourful desires. It helped the students to stimulate their imagination, enhance creativity, eye-hand coordination and develop motor skills. They learnt to use recyclable materials to make rakhis.

It was a fun filled activity.

PRE-PRIMARY INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATION

India celebrated its 73rd Independence day on 15th August 2019.

At Vidya Vikas Academy the children of Senior Kg A, B and C celebrated the Independence day with great joy and enthusiasm.

The significance of Independence Day was explained to the pupils. National symbols and celebrations held on Independence day all over India were also discussed. Some of the pupils quoted their famous slogans.

The highlight of the programme was a dance performance on patriotic songs.

The programme concluded with singing the patriotic song ‘we can achieve’ by all the students.

INDEPENDENCE DAY-SCHOOL

15th August is a historical and significant day for the Indians. On this day in the year 1947, India was liberated from the British rule.

Vidya Vikas Academy celebrated the 73rd Independence Day in the school campus with zeal and fervor on Thursday,15th August, 2019.

The programme was as follows:

Tr. Archana Verma welcomed the gathering on the occasion of Independence Day. The Principal Mrs. Joble Bijoy unfurled the National Flag followed by the National Anthem. An Oath taking ceremony was conducted by the NCC Cadets.

The Principal addressed the students emphasizing the importance of struggle and sacrifice of the freedom fighters to get the Independence and encouraged the students to value it, take highest education and use it for the progress of the country.

The pupils of Pre-Primary demonstrated the feelings of patriotism through their beautiful dance performance. A speech in Hindi was delivered by Miss Vani Lakshmi of Class 8 C. The students spread the feelings of sacrifice and patriotism by singing the song “Meri Mitti” trained by Sir Neil and “Tri Colour” by Sir Saturnino. Thereafter the students of class 11 enacted a skit depicting the freedom struggle of India.

Students were presented with certificates and trophies for their excellent performance at the various competitions. A patriotic dance “Vande Mataram” was performed by the students of class 9 with great zeal and energy.The programme was compeered by Miss Anushka Mitra of Class 9 B. Tr. Archan Verma proposed the Vote of Thanks. There was a Live Streaming of the programme at five different locations in the school. It was co-ordinated by Sir Akshay Chari (Overall In-charge), Mrs. Pradnya Nadkarni and Sir Addison Costa.

The programme concluded with the National Song “Vande Mataram” sung by Miss Dhiti Lotlikar.

BATTLE OF BOOKS-QUIZ

Reading is the key that opens the door to many good things in life. Reading shapes dreams and helps to make them come true. Various efforts are made at Vidya Vikas Academy to inculcate reading habit among the students. The activity of the month of August was a treat for those who love reading. A quiz on books, ‘Battle of Books’ was conducted for classes 9 and 10. The students were puzzled by the questions on characters, authors and situations from the literary world. The winners were Josheph D’souza (10C), Michael Lewis (10C) and Ryan Fernandes (10 A). The students participated enthusiastically and were encouraged to read more.

LIBRARY DAY

Library Day was celebrated at VVA on 16th August 2019 with great reverence. At the morning assembly, Durva Talaulikar of class 8 A spoke about the importance of the day.

Later on in the Library Traditional Lamp was lit and floral tribute was payed to the Father of Library Science, Late Dr. S.R. Ranganathan by Principal Mrs. Joble Bijoy, Vice-Principal Mrs. Tania Monteiro, Teacher Shaefali, Librarians Mrs Archana Pednekar and Nutan Naik along with PTFC Parent Representatives Mrs. Cressilda Almeida and Mrs. Radha Naik.

As a part of the programme the following activities were conducted. Story Telling was held by some students of classes 4 to 8 in English, Hindi and Konkani. An exhibition of Fiction/Reference books in English, Hindi and Konkani. A written Quiz was conducted for the students in the Library on the theme “Books my Friend”.

Erika Colaco of class 5 A was declared the winner.

There was also a TV display of a PPT on Famous books and authors.

The Programme concluded with a vote of thanks by the Librarian Archana Pednekar.

INTER-SCHOOL KONKANI STORY TELLING COMPETITION

An inter-school Konkani Story Telling Competition was held on Monday, 19th August, 2019 at Konkani Bhasha Mandal Bhavan, Margao. The students were accompanied by Tr. Sharmila Naik.

Master Shaurya Shetgaonkar of Class 3 A won second place and Miss Aarna Pagi of Class 4 C won third place in the First category. Master Shaurya Shetgaonkar has qualified for the District Level Competition.

WORLD HUMANITARIAN DAY

VVA celebrated World Humanitarian Day on 21st August, 2019 – a day to honour those who put their lives on the line for the greater good of humanity. To commemorate this occasion, the students of class 9 presented a poignant skit on the story of Malala Yousafzai. The skit presented Malala as an inspiration to women all over the world. She risked everything and expressed her opinion fearlessly. She took a bullet for it but lived to tell the tale. The skit was held at 8a.m. in the School Hall and everyone participated wholeheartedly.

The objective of the skit was to spread awareness and bring about changes in the world. The students left the hall with a better understanding and clearer perspective on why World Humanitarian Day is celebrated all over the world.

GAURI WINS AT DESIGN A GREETING CARD CONTEST 2019

Gauri Mantri of class 7C won the 2nd place at Design a greeting card contest- 2019 organized by Bal Bhavan, Goa.The theme for the competition was ‘Festivals’. The competition was held at Loyola school Margao.

Gauri was awarded a certificate and a cash prize of Rs. 750/-

WORLD ENTREPRENEURSHIP DAY

Vidya Vikas Academy hosted and celebrated World Entrepreneurship Day in collaboration with CIBA(Centre for Incubation and Business Accceleration) on 22nd August, 2019. Vice-Principal Mrs. Tania Monteiro welcomed and introduced the guest speakers. They were presented with a potted plant and momentos as a token of appreciation and gratitude.

The programme was an initiative of Mr. Ryan Vaz, founder of Infinyt 3D printing lab. The Guest Speakers for the day were Mr. Anish Souza, Founder and CEO of Sun360, dealing in Solar Power and water systems, Ms. Nilisha Ferrao, Founder of Narla, The Coconut Company of consumer durables and goods and Mr Anand Lotlikar, Founder of Deviant Strokes- a branding consultancy.

Mr. Amey Karmali, CEO of CIBA, addressed the gathering which was followed by the address of the guest speakers. Through personal experiences, motivational stories and examples, the speakers gave an insight into the Entrepreneural Mindset which would help motivate the students to blaze forward in their own trail.

The main objective of the programme was to encourage and motivate the students to break free from the monotonous career paths and think of innovative business options. This in turn would create more employment opportunities thus contibuting to the social development of our country.

JANMASHTAMI’19

The festival of Janmashtami is celebrated with great pomp and vigour all over the world. It marks the birth day of Lord Krishna.

The pre-primary section of the Vidya Vikas Academy celebrated the festival on the 23rd of Aug 2019. The teacher discussed the festivities of the festival.

The boys from Junior Kg. B class demonstrated the ‘Dahi Handi’ session by forming a human pyramid. The dance performance by the pupils of the pre-primary section on the song, “Govinda Aala Re” added cheer and charm to the occasion. The highlight of the assembly was the “Breaking of the pot”.

WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY

August 19 is observed as World Photography Day, which aims to inspire photographers across the planet to share a single photo with a simple purpose: to share their world with the rest of the world. With this in mind a special assembly was held in VVA.

The assembly began with a brief history highlighting the origin of the World Photography day. Next, a video was shown on the evolution of photography over the years. Students were enlightened about the different ways in which World Photography day is celebrated in India and around the world.

The assembly ended with a short biography about the famous photographer Steve McCurry with a display of his best photographs.

The students were enriched with the information given during the assembly.

NATIONAL SPORTS DAY

The National Sports Day 2019 was held on 29th August at Vidya Vikas Academy with much vigour and enthusiasm. The day began with a fitness pledge taken by all the students through the PA System.This was followed by Special Assembly organized on the famous sports personalities.

The school invited a Goan Chess Master Nitish Belukar. Who addressed and inspired the students on his life experiences and motivated them to dedicate themselves to at least one sports. The students were very intrigued and had many queries.

The students viewed the Live Streaming of the ‘Fit’ India Movement and were exposed to various indigenous sports activities. The Prime Minister speech was inspiring and boosted the sports spirit in the students. Various fitness exercises were conducted in the school on the occasion of National Sports Day.

ADVERTISEMENT ACT

An advertisement Act was conducted for classes 6-8 as the co-curricular activity for the month of August. The students were given the opportunity to present an advertisement act individually.

The main objective for the activity was to showcase the student’s creativity, communication & business skills like Marketing. The students were creative and enacted short advertisements of various products with enthusiasm. They were judged on various criteria like creativity and presentation, need for product, visual aids/props, pronunciation and within time frame.

The manner in which the students presented their advertisement acts was admirable and laudable.

PRE-PRIMARY GANESH CHATURTHI CELEBRATION

Sharing the knowledge of culture, value and festivals around the world makes children more sensitive and empathetic to their surroundings. Instilling religious tolerance from an early age makes them grow up to be better human beings.

Keeping this in mind we at Vidya Vikas Academy, the pre-primary section celebrated the festival of Ganesh chaturthi on the 29th of August. The students of Junior kg. A and C, participated in the assembly coordinated by teacher Fatima and teacher Nila.

The story about Ganesha was narrated and enacted by the participants. Followed by a dance performance to the tune of ‘O, my friend Ganesha’.

The pre-primary staff and students also participated in the ‘visarjan’ of Ganesha, chanting hymns, bhajans and joyously shouting ‘Ganapati bappamorya’.

NO SCHOOL BAG DAY – ”Crayon Craze“

“We are a box of crayons each of us is unique but together the picture is complete”.

No school bag day was celebrated on 30th August, 2019 by the Pre-Primary pupils themed “Crayon Craze”.

The day began with great enthusiasm and joy. The three pre-primary sections came dressed in primary colours. Tr. Melbina spoke about the colours and concluded the assembly with a dance on the same.

Activities such as games, craft and videos were shown to the pupils on colours.

NO SCHOOL BAG DAY -PRIMARY

“Creativity is as important now in education as literacy and we should treat it with the same status”

‘No School Bag Day’ was conducted at VVA for the students of classes 1 – 5 on 30th August 2019.’ The theme for this day was ‘Jungle Safari.’ students came dressed in animal printed attire. All activities conducted were related to wildlife. The activities included art and craft work like puppet making (animal finger puppet), animal mask making, worksheets (wildlife), videos etc. A mock test was also conducted to prepare the students for the

Achiever’s Exam that will be held in the month of October 2019 and March 2020.

It was an amazing learning experience and a fun filled day for the students. All had a great time.

MEDICAL HEALTH CHECK UP

A medical health checkup was conducted for the students of Vidya Vikas Academy under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) and was coordinated by VVA Nurse Gilda Barreto. The school health team from Urban Health Centre Margao conducted the health checkup for all students from classes Nursery to 12th, except the students whose parents provided a note that they did not want their child to avail of the services provided.

The students were screened for 4Ds: Defects, Deficiencies, Diseases and Developmental delays. The students were given advise on diet, exercise, hygiene and other health related topics.

MONSOON HIKE-SCHOOL SIDE

Monsoon hikes give an opportunity for the students to explore nature and to have a funfilled adventure away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. Vidya Vikas Academy organised a monsoon hike for the students of classes 9 A B C and 10 A B C on Saturday, 31st August 2019 to Kankonmoddi, Cuncolim-Goa, from 7.45 am to 1.40 pm. 168 students with 18 staff members and the school nurse experienced misty clouds along with a slight drizzle. Under the able leadership of Mr. Siddharth Fal Dessai, they learnt about the flora and fauna and got equipped with the physical skills and mental alertness required for the outdoor adventures.

REPORT ON SELF DEFENSE WORKSHOP

Self Defense, especially for women, is of great necessity due to the power imbalance in the world that we live in today. Women, usually referred to as the weaker gender, are often considered vulnerable and easy targets, especially in India, where innumerable cases of gender violence are on the rise, while many go unpublicized or unreported, self-defense for women is imperative now more than ever. Each self defence workshop focuses on a specific type of attack that women may be confronted with. On 2nd August, the girls from the senior secondary section at Vidya Vikas Academy, were given a very didactic session on self-defense by Krav Maga Global (KMG) India.

Krav Maga is a form of self-defense and physical training based on the use of reflexive responses to threatening situations.

Various forms of Krav Maga Defense techniques were shown and the participants were made to demonstrate them. From the ’360′ defence to using a chair as a weapon. All these techniques will be extremely helpful in cases of danger.

Mr. Sahil Essani and Mr.Elroy were the instructors who conducted an extremely informative session on Krav Maga.

SESSION ON BODY SHAMING

The practice of making critical, humiliating comments about a person’s body, size or weight is termed as ‘Body Shaming’. To highlight a few things about body shaming, guest speaker Siddhi Parodkar from Govind Ramnath Kare College of Law, conducted a session for the Senior Secondary students on 5th August, 2019.

She asserted that body shaming is an act of bullying and harassment. She stated that body shaming can take different forms such as criticizing your own appearance, criticizing the appearance of others etc. The session went on well and students presented different questions to the guest speaker. The session ended with some useful tips to deal with the problem of body shaming.

WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY

August 19 is celebrated as World Photography Day, a day to pay respect to the history of photography, celebrate the present and leave a positive trail for the future. On 5th August 2019, the students of class 12 A from the senior secondary section of Vidya Vikas Academy conducted a special assembly on World Photography Day.

The assembly began with a short introduction on how photography becomes an indispensable part of our lives followed by the history of World Photography Day.

The varied themes covered for World Photography Day in some parts of the world were also displayed. Additional information on the world’s best photographer as well as photograph was presented.

A short video based on the evolution of photography was screened. The assembly ended with the announcement of the photography contest followed by a brief conclusion on photography.

REPORT ON PHOTOGRAPHY TALK

A talk on photography was conducted on 16 August, 2019 in the Senior Secondary Section of Vidya Vikas Academy. The talk was conducted by Mr. Antonio Pacheco, a well acclaimed photographer as well as a cinematographer.

Mr. Pacheco judged the photography contest and conducted a short talk on how photography can be a fine profession and how it can be a powerful medium of expression that can be used to communicate strong positive messages about a subject. Mr. Pacheco also encouraged the students to send in their best works to him.

MONSOON HIKE

The students from the senior secondary section along with the teachers went for a monsoon hike on 24th August, 2019 at Kankonamoddi, Cuncolim. The buses left the VVA campus at 8:15 a.m. and reached the destination at 8:45 a.m. The bus journey was great fun and everyone bonded with their fellow travelers and staved off boredom with some good songs.

After climbing the hill at Kankonamoddi, the students were engaged in some fun filled games and they played them with full vigour. Climbing down the narrow path, the students were taken to a ground where they enjoyed playing different games along with the teachers.

SKETCH AN ACT SKIT COMPETITION

Young learners are the best messengers to spread awareness about social and global issues and their voices do leave an impact on ones’ mind. To bring out the acting talent of the students and to spread the message of humanity, Fr. Agnel’s Multipurpose Higher Secondary School, Verna had organized a Skit competition on 31st August, 2019 for students of Higher Secondary Section.

The collaborative efforts and hard work of the Senior Secondary students of Vidya Vikas Academy was evident as the students performed their act brilliantly on the stage focusing on the social issue ‘Racism’and won the Second prize for the competition.
