EXCURSION AT SHREE RAYESHWAR INSTITUTE

Vidya Vikas Academy believes in going beyond classroom teaching to provide the students with experiences, as per their interests, outside the school curriculum. On 22nd of January, 2018, the students of class 9 considering their interest were taken to Shree Rayeshwar Institute of Engineering & Information Technology to get more knowledge on the working and teaching patterns. Students had a privilege to visit the Computer Science Department and the IT Department wherein they were briefed about the choice of their subject and how to prepare themselves to get into the specific field of their choice.

At the workshop, they were given demo lessons on Robotics, how to make the carpentry tools, spot welding and also introduction to various machinery and equipments used by the engineering students. Overall, it was a thrilling experience for the students. They got an opportunity to clear all their doubts regarding the subjects taught during the ‘doubt’ session. MARTYRS' DAY

“Aao Jhuk kar salam kare unko, Jinke hisse me ye mukaam aatha hai, Khushnaseeb hota hai ye khoon, Jo desh ke kaam aata hai.” Martyrs’ Day also known as Sarvodaya day or Shaheed diwas marks the death anniversary of the father of nation, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who was assassinated on Jan 30, 1948, by Nathuram Godse. The day is also used to pay respects to the other Indians who have sacrificed their lives in defending the nation.

On this day the president, the vice president, the prime minister, the defense minister, salute and pay floral tribute to Martyrs at the India Gate. A two-minute silence in memory of Indian martyrs is observed throughout the country at 11 AM. A special assembly was conducted in school on 30th January 2018, at 8:30am to remember the martyred souls. Students of class 7B presented this assembly, which was attended by the students of 7A and 7C.The programme began with a short introduction and floral tribute to the martyred souls followed by the prayer. One child recited a poem as a tribute to the Martyr’s. Students also gave us information on Mahatma Gandhi and others who contributed in the freedom struggle. Four students from class 7C sang ‘Yeh Mere Watan Ke Logoh’a song on a self-composed tune to glorify the sacrifices of the freedom fighters. Gandhi used the weapon of non-violence to fight against every injustice and exploitation. Students enacted the ‘Dandi March’ and gave a glimse of the ‘Civil Disobedience Movement’. The life of Mahatma Gandhi is full of lessons that still inspire people across the world. The students spoke about the lessons which were taught by Gandhi. *Happiness is anything done with harmony. *Mental strength is more important than physical * Change yourself before you wish to see the change. Gandhi spoke about communal harmony and unity among the people. A dance was performed by the students on Gandhi’s famous bhajan ‘Ragupathi Ragav Raja Ram’.The Assembly concluded with an inspiring speech by the Vice-Principal Ms. Tania Monteiro. The students appreciated the assembly and left with deep respect for the martyrs.Later, at 11.00 am a two minutes silence was observed by all the students and staff in the school. Co-ordinator Tr. VISIT TO 'DESTINATION GOA' EXHIBITIONAT RAVINDRA BHAVAN

On 2nd February, 2018, eighty eight students of class 9 from Vidya Vikas Academy visited the ‘Destination Goa 2018’ The Mega Exhibition organised by Aavishkaarr Exhibitions and Promotions Private Limited a Team of Smart Mavens. The exhibits highlighted the various Information on the following topics: -

1. Space Research 2. Skills and Education 3. Health and Nutrition 4. Agriculture and Horticulture 5. Science and Technology and Earth Sciences

GOSPEL MUSICAL CONCERT

Blue Ocean Waves presented a Gospel musical concert on 9 th February 2018 at Ravindra Bhavan Auditorium. Seven students from Vidya Vikas Academy Life Skill Resource Room were a part of the same and sang a song in tune with the theme “Your Grace Is sufficient For Me”. The song spoke about praising God for the graces he has bestowed on us. QUARK EVENT - SCHOOL BAG 2018 AT BITS PILANI

Quark organized its Annual Technology and Management festival, ‘School Bag’ Quark 2018 at BITS PILANI from 9th to 11th February 2018. This year, Quark provided a platform for the brightest minds from across the country to showcase their skills by taking part in events under various exciting panels.The students of Vidya Vikas Academy, Secondary Section participated in the various events organised by BITS Pilani held on the 11th February 2018. The events of the “School Bag” were as follows: Debate, Quiz, Cryptic Writing and Science Fair. Our students participated in the Quiz, Debate and the Cryptic Writing. Our students namely RYAN FERNANDES, AMEYA JAMKAR of class 9 and NICOLE LOURENCO of class 10 won the 1st place for the Quiz competition. The students got an opportunity to view the campus , as well as interact with the students enrolled at the College. They were able to view and learn many things which inspired and enriched them to work towards their ambition. It was truly a challenging experience for all of them.Tr. SAEVUS ECO ACHIEVERS QUIZ 2017-2018

Saevus is India’s premier wildlife magazine covers stories on conservation, natural history, wildlife and photography, from around the world. SAEVUS Eco Achievers Quiz, is an annual National level, middle school quiz (Classes 5, 6 & 7 only) organized by them. It aims to develop a strong environmental consciousness among children. The quiz was conducted in 40 cities in the country and the city winners were to meet at the National Finals in Mumbai. The National Finale of the Saevus Eco Achievers Quiz Competition was held on the 10th and 11th February 2018 at Euro School (Navi Mumbai) and Fine Arts Cultural Centre (Mumbai) respectively. It was organized along with Skybags and Hemchand Mahindra Foundation as conservation partners. Three students of Vidya Vikas Academy, Manmay Lotlikar, Yutasha Egipsy and Anushka Mitra from classes 5, 6 & 7 participated in the quiz. The quiz ranged from current wildlife laws, Indian biodiversity identification and some on environment conservation and protection topics. A healthy competition was witnessed with full participation of the 5 different semifinal groups each consisting of 7 different cities and each city team consisting of 3 participants. A written round was also conducted for the wild card entry on the second day of the event. Delhi Public School (Kalinga) from Bhubaneswar bagged the first place. All the participants were given medals and a momento to the teacher eco educator. The training for quiz was provided by Tr. Shaefali and Tr. Afshan. Tr. Rachna Thakur accompanied the students to Mumbai for the quiz.

VIDYARTHI VIGYAN MANTHAN

Vidyarthi Vigyan Manthan (VVM) is a National program for educating and popularizing science among school students of VI to XI standards. VVM also endeavours to identify bright minds among the student community, who are keen on subjects related to science. Our school had given an opportunity for students to take part in the online exam conducted by VVM. The online exam was held on 5th December, 2017.Miss Ojaswi Phaldessai from class 8C topped the exam at the District Level.Based on the exam results, the following students were selected for the State Level camp which was held at Vidyaprabodhini School Complex, Porvorim, on 13th February, 2018. 1. Mrudula Battula, class 11 2. Sharlet Bijoy Chowalloor, class 10 3. Nihaal Virgincar, class 8 4. Ojaswi Phaldessai, class 8 5. Joseph J. Fernandes, class 8 These children also got an opportunity to interact with the Nobel Laureate, Richard J. Roberts, Christine Nusslein Volhars, Tomas Linda and Sirgehiroche at Kala Academy on 13th February, 2018. RESOURCE ROOM EXCURSION

The children from the Life Skill Resource Room of Vidya Vikas Academy went for an excursion to Garça Branca Ayurvedic Botanical Garden & Bird Park, Loutolim on the 15th of February 2018. The parents of these children also were a part of this outing.

The place is a beautiful Portuguese style villa that has a lot of fun and learning to offer. It’s a play park with two swimming pools, different beautiful birds, cat fish as well as animals. Not forgetting the different fruits and beneficial plants that were labeled with common/ scientific names & their uses. One can admire the nature standing at the riverfront. The children had fun on the swing, see-saw, slide as well as the huge trampoline. Later they had a chilling experience in the pool. The children shared their snacks under the shade of the trees. SUCCESS AT 66TH WILDLIFE WEEK CELEBRATION As a part of the 66th Wildlife Week Celebrations, an Essay Writing competition was conducted by the Forest department, Government of Goa, for High School and Higher secondary students of Salcete Taluka at Loyola High School Margao, on 8th October 2017.The topic was ‘Wildlife sanctuaries of Goa and its contribution to Society’. The results were declared on 19TH February 2018. Miss Niharika Sawant of class 9A won the first place. VIDYA VIKAS ACADEMY HOSTS IIMUN-GOA CHAPTER 2018

Vidya Vikas Academy, Margao, was proud to host the IIMUN- Goa Chapter 2018 for the second time in which 115 of Goa’s brightest minds came together to take on the role of decision makers and offer solutions to worldwide issues. Indian International Model United Nations (IIMUN) is a brainchild of Rishabh Shah, who aims to get India its rightful place on the International stage. It is an

organization which conducts the simulations of UN and Indian Parliament in different cities across the country. An impressive ceremony marked the opening of the three day IIMUN 16th February in the Ganesh Daivajyna Hall at 4.00pm. Although formal, the atmosphere was very friendly, students enjoyed themselves talking to each other and meeting new faces. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Mr. Rajiva Misra who has served as India’s Ambassador to Croatia from 2006-09, and to Slovakia from 2010-14 and has recently assumed charge of his current position as India’s Ambassador to Austria, and the Vienna based international organizations. He was accompanied by his wife Mrs. Anita Misra, a senior professional with the UN. The programme began by the lighting of the ceremonial lamp followed by the inspiring words of Director general Mr. Rahil Sheth. Principal of Vidya Vikas Academy, Mrs. Joble Bijoy, appreciated such endeavours to provide a platform for the younger generation to voice their opinions. The students of Vidya Vikas Academy, then, mesmerized the gathering with a classical dance performance. IIMUN video was showcased to create awareness of conferences conduced by IIMUN in the country and abroad. The guest Ambassador, Mr. Rajiva Misra urged the students to uphold the values of community brotherhood and world peace. The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by the Secretary, Ms Mansi Mistry. While most teenagers are busy chatting over Whatsapp, Instagram and Twitter, there are a few who are learning their first lessons of diplomacy and International Journalism. It was indeed a rare and inspiring sight to see 115 teenagers looking professional and all grown up in their formal attire, discussing, debating and trying to solve National and International issues by means of role play and deliberations in Committee Sessions. For the next two days the venue was buzzing with 115 delegates from top schools of the state acting like diplomats and trying to brainstorm myriad issues which are valid globally and to find a pertinent solution. A quiet interesting mixture of developed and developing countries were represented here, all of great potential to give fundamental contribution to the discussion flow. The different committees in session and their topics of discussion were as follows: • Lok Sabha :The question of LGBT Rights in India with emphasis on the amendment to the section 377 • SOCHUM :The rights of linguistic minorities • DISEC :The question of contemporary espionage • UNSC :Dealing with the challenges in the Middle East with emphasis on propagation of Preventive Diplomacy • International Press The three-day conference culminated by proposing extraordinary solutions by ingenious delegates of different committees. These solutions were compiled into resolutions by the Executive Board which in turn forwarded them to IIMUN. In the closing ceremony the best participants were felicitated. The students of Sunshine World Wide School bagged the best delegation award. “ Our stature is miles ahead of what it was before, the world looks up to us, and it is not because of our large defence forces, but because we have an ancient history, diverse culture and tolerance to all traditions.” The Guest Ambassador Mr. Rajiva Misra appreciated the passion, energy enthusiasm and self confidence of the students and asserting his faith in the Indian youth he added that “We surely will get permanent membership in UNSC not because we are campaigning for it but because the world will see that UNSC cannot do without India, a country with 1.5 billion bright and ignited minds” Co-ordinator Tr. STUDENT OF VIDYA VIKAS ACADEMY PAVES HER WAY TO NASA

It is said that when you educate a girl, you kick-start a cycle of success. Ojaswi Phaldessai a dedicated, sincere and hardworking student of class 8 participated in KCNS (Kalpana Chawla National Scholarship) Educharya.com online exam. Her urge to strive for perfection began at a very early age and now she has soared to accomplish her dreams. On the 20th of February 2018, Team KCNS visited VVA to felicitate her & Mrs. Anita Ramdhani (Managing Director of Educharya.com) presented her with a boarding pass to NASA. She further appreciated the efforts of the Principal and school in mentoring & motivating the students. Team KCNS briefed the students regarding the activities conducted by Educharya.com. “VVA is proud of your achievement & let this be an inspiration for other students” said the Principal Mrs. Joble Bijoy congratulating Ojaswi. She wished her success in her future endeavours.

INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY – SPECIAL ASSEMBLY

21st February is observed all over the world as International Mother Language Day to promote awareness and the preservation of linguistic and cultural diversity . A special assembly was conducted in our school to mark the importance of this day. A Bharatnatyam dance was performed, to a very famous Tamil Prayer song, written by a renowned Tamil Poet, Subramaniam Bharati in praise of Lord Murugan. The dance was choreographed by Dr.Deeptha Rubasundaram. The students were briefed on the importance of International Mother Language Day. To add a Gujarati flavour to our assembly, girls from class 8 and 9 performed a Dandiya and Garbha dance. Finally the assembly concluded with a humourous skit in Konkani performed by the students of class 8A. Co-ordinator Tr. Reshma Raikar

CLASS X FAREWELL

The Students of Class10, batch 2017-2018 were given a farewell on Thursday, 1st February, 2018 at the Ganesh Daivajnya auditorium . The programme commenced at 10am with a prayer service, which was followed by an inspirational speech by the Principal, Mrs. Joble Bijoy. This was followed by a speech by the Head Girl, Miss. Grazielle Serrao, who shared her experiences at Vidya Vikas Academy from nursery to class 10. The students enjoyed the Spot Prizes and the zealous performance by class 9 students i.e. melodious music and dances.The highlight of the programme was the much awaited Mr. and Miss. VVA in which our dashing young boys and gorgeous girls of class 10 participated with great enthusiasm.

This was followed by a Power Point Presentation, which created a nostalgic moment for the students to relive their yesteryears in school. The programme concluded with the distribution of mementos by the Principal and Vice Principal to the batch of 2017-2018 students. Head Boy, Mr. Noah Pereira proposed the vote of thanks. It was indeed an amazing programme.

ACTIVITY FOR THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY - SELF COMPOSED POEM

The activity was conducted during the activity period and the three best participants from each class (6-9) were selected. The Finale was held on 28 of Feb in the Hall. The three selected participants of all the classes had to recite the poem with voice modulation, expression and clarity. The students of Class 6ABC were the audience. VVA STUDENTS ATTEND BENGAL GOA FOLK ART WORKSHOP

Students of class 8 & 9 attended various workshops on Bengal /Goa Folk Arts and Crafts organized by Ravindra Bhavan , Margao between 17th to 24 th February 2018. The objective of these workshops was to impart training of traditional arts & crafts from Bengal & Goa.

Patchitra, Basketry, Kantha embroidery, Clay dolls, Bamboo work and Madhubani paintings demonstrations were conducted by traditional artists. It was a wonderful learning experience for the students.

VVA STUDENTS EMERGE AS WINNERS AT TECHNOBIT 2K18

“Technobit 2K18”, a one day state level IT Fest was hosted by Smt. Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts and Science ,Margao ,Goa on 31st January 2018 for all the higher secondary schools across the state of Goa. The event was aimed at testing the knowledge as well the creative skills of the students in the field of IT. The prestigious eventstarted off with an inaugural ceremony and then it waved off to begin with the technical and gaming events. Around 10 students from class 11 represented Vidya Vikas Academy for the competition. The event comprised of multiple competitions like a Programming Test, IT Quiz, Debate, Web-Designing, Photography and Gaming events. All the participants exhibited fabulous performance in most of the competitions. As a result of cumulative efforts of the students, Vidya Vikas Academy emerged as the winners of “Technobit 2K18”. The students were highly appreciated for their hard work and IT skills. The event also provided the students with a very good platform to showcase their flairs. SCERT – JAWAHARLAL NEHRU STATE LEVEL NATIONAL SCIENCE & ENVIRONMENT EXHIBITION

With a view to encourage, popularize and inculcate scientific temper among the youth of the country, State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) organized the State Level Science, Mathematics and Environment Exhibition for students in collaboration with NCERT, New Delhi and Goa Science Centre, Miramar from 29th to 31st January 2018. This year’s theme for science exhibition was “Innovations for sustainable development”. Four students from Vidya Vikas Academy-Senior Secondary Section participated and presented their exhibits at the Goa Science Centre, Miramar under the category of digital and technological solutions. The first day of the event began with a seminar on Digital Transactions where the resource persons enlightened the audience on different online digital transactions, followed by display of various projects from different schools across the state of goa. A 3D movie based on science and technology was also screened for the students. Overall the event was very engaging and informative and the participating students had an excellent exposure to the different projects & exhibits brought in by different students from various schools. MARTYRS' DAY

Every year on 30th January, Martyrs’ Day is observed throughout the country to mark the assassination of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi-Father of our Nation by Nathuram Godse in 1948 and also to honour all those who sacrificed their lives defending for the sovereignty of our country. To commemorate this day a special assembly was conducted by students of class 11B to instil among the younger generation respect for the sacrifices and gallant efforts made by our fellow Indians for the pride and honour of our nation. The assembly began with an introduction about the significance of the day by Shanaya Phal Desai followed by an educational video about the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. A spirit stirring poem based on patriotism was recited by Shrisha Naik followed by an inspirational quote by Isha Dhuri. The assembly was concluded with students maintaining a two minutes silence to pay a tribute to all the great martyrs of our country. Co-ordinator Tr. Jeniffer Fernandes

WORLD CANCER DAY

World Cancer Day is one singular initiative under which the entire world unites together in the fight against the global cancer epidemic. It is observed every year on 4th February. World Cancer Day aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year by raising awareness and education about cancer, and urging individuals across the world to take action against the prevention of the disease. For 2016 to 2018, the theme for the‘World Cancer Day’ was ‘We Can, I can.’ Under this theme, people are expected to, individually and collectively, understand and work towards lessening the impact and harmful effects of the condition globally. To create awareness of the same, the students of class 11 conducted a special assembly on 5th February 2018. The special assembly began with a speech on the significance of the day followed by a thought for the day based on importance of good health. The assembly was concluded with the screening of a documentary video which highlighted the 8 early warning signs of cancer and causes of cancer. Co-ordinator Tr. Shaheena Basha

HASSLEHOM VISIT TO VVA

On 9th February, 2018 sixteen students with two faculty members from Hasslehom School, Sweden visited Vidya Vikas Academy. The contingent with a tour manager Mr. Clinton Vaz had a short interaction with the Principal. Subsequently, the group was taken around the school to show the facilities available such as the Music room, laboratories, Herbal Garden, Waste Management Unit, Rain Water Harvesting Unit, Infirmary, Sports Room, Art Room, Pre-Primary Section, Primary Section and Senior Secondary Section. They later on had an interactive session between the students of VVA and students of Hasslehom at Ramdas Mallya Memorial Smart Classroom. It consisted of a group discussion on the topics like Food, Culture, Dance, Music, Love and Marriages, Festivals, Religion and so on in their respective countries. Eight groups were formed where the students had to discuss about these topics and later two students (1 from VVA and 1 from Hasslehom) were to summarise on the discussed topics. The session was concluded by a vote of thanks by the tour manager. Participation in such interactions proves to be a learning experience which enables students to build their personal and social competence and intercultural understanding, including language skills. WORKSHOP ON IOT WITH ROBOTICS

IIT Mumbai in alliance with Robokart Technologies conducted a workshop on ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) with Robotics. It was an Arduino Based Robotics Workshop, organised by the Department of Computer Science of Shree Damodar College of Commerce & Economics on 8th & 9th February 2018. The Resource person, Mr. Nabeel Qureshi from Robokart Technologies introduced the participants to the various aspects of Robotics and IoT. Four students from Vidya Vikas Academy participated in this 2 days workshop. Participants were given an arduino kit, with which they were able to interface and control various devices like LED, Motor, Relay, Buzzer. The students were also fascinated to know how an arduino circuit interface can be used to control home appliances i.e. Smart Home Automation. All the participants were elated to attend such a remarkable workshop. All the participants were awarded participation certificates. The students of Vidya Vikas Academy, Senior Secondary Section participated in the Annual Technology and Management festival, ‘School Bag’ Quark 2018 at BITS PILANI, Goa campus on 11th February, 2018. The students participated and displayed their skills and talents in various competitions like Debate, Quiz, Science Fair and Cryptography. CLASS 12 FAREWELL 2018

Goodbyes are never easy yet it must be done as a ritual. It is the time for reflection, sentiments, expressions of gratitude and ceremonial goodbyes. The Principal, staff and students of class 11 of Vidya Vikas Academy- Senior Secondary Section bid farewell to the outgoing students of class 12 on 12thFebruary 2018. The farewell programme was celebrated with fervour at Ganesh Daivajna Auditorium. It was an occasion for the parting students to look back at the time they spent in the lawns of Vidya Vikas Academy and the quality education that they acquired here. The students were welcomed with flowers and bands by the class teachers. The programme got off to start with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp followed by a short prayer service to pray for the outgoing students of class 12 as it marked the end of an important milestone in their lives and a beginning of a new one. The Principal passed on the ‘light’ of wisdom to all the students of class 12. She urged the students to carry the vision of VVA out in the world where ever they go and retain the values they inhabited during their course of

study in this institute. She advised the students to prepare well for the board examination and come out with flying colours. She also encouraged the students to believe in themselves, remain focused and to acquire positive attitude throughout their lives which will always help them to face life’s battle. The General Secretary, Miss Tanha Ponnappan delivered a speech on her journey of two years in this institute. Thereafter, there was a spate of dances, music and laughter as the hosts ( Isha Dhuri and Abhimanyu Sen) impressed the audience with their vast repository of skills. Class 11 students presented foot tapping dances and songs. The students were also entertained with occasional spot prizes. To have a short tour down the memory lane the teachers had compiled some of the best moments that the students had experienced in the institute, ranging from inter-collegiate events to the time the students had gone for a school tour in the form of a video. The much awaited contest for deeming the Master and Miss VVA was also organised and was judged by Tr. Carla Quadros, Tr. Farheen Khan and Sir Neil D’Cruz. Miss Kimberly Pandey was crowned as Miss VVA where as Mr. Earl Fortes was adjudged as Master VVA. They were presented with flower bouquets and gift vouchers. The farewell function was culminated with a cake cutting ceremony by the staff and the members of the Student Council. The programme was concluded with a vote of thanks by the GS Mr. Ayush Noorani and on a line of thought that farewell is necessary before you can meet again.

YOUNG SCIENTISTS 2017 – SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY FEST

“Young Scientists 2017”, a Science & Technology Fest was hosted by Shiroda Higher Secondary School on 8th& 9th December 2017 for higher secondary students across the state of Goa. The event was organized to help students to showcase their innovations in the field of science & technology through projects/exhibits and knowledge test.It was a two days event, 1st day started off with the set-up of exhibits/projects. On the 2nd day the judges gave their judgement on all the exhibits, followed by the technical and gaming competitions. Around 20 students from Vidya Vikas Academy participated in this event. Siddhant Dessai and Prabhakar Sawant Dessai victoriously won the first place in the Treasure Hunt. Rest all the students made a great effort and gave a tough competition to other competitors. PHOTO CONTEST ON IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE

The High Commission of Canada organized a photo contest on the theme ‘Impact of Climate Change’. The contest was open to all citizens of India, Nepal and Bhutan between the age group of 15-21 Years. Four Students from Senior Secondary section of Vidya Vikas Academy participated in the event. Each participant was allowed to submit only one photograph taken anywhere in India, Nepal or Bhutan. The photo was sent in .jpeg/.jpg format at a medium or high quality with size not exceeding 2.5 MB. AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL CHEMISTRY QUIZ – ANCQ-2017

Association of Chemistry Teachers-Goa conducted the ‘Australian National Chemistry Quiz’ (ANCQ) 2017 for all the Higher Secondary Schools across Goa on 6th September 2017. Six students from Vidya Vikas Senior Secondary Section participated in the same. The aim of the quiz was to promote and encourage awareness about the environment, role and relevance of science/chemistry among school students; to emphasize upon the connection between the academic image of science/chemistry and its day to day applications at home. An in-depth report with statistical treatment consisting of valuable feedback of the student’s performance was provided to each participating school.
