laat en het daar ’n witkleurige voertuig voorhulle stilgehou. Twee mans met polisie-ken-tekens het hulle genader en uitgevra oor die

geld in die sakkie. Die mans was glo gekleein gewonekleredrag,”hetMarlenevertel. Syhet gesê die twee mans het die egpaar ver-soek om saam met hulle te ry, glo om diesaak “verder te ondersoek”.Die egpaar het glo aan hulle verduidelik

wat gebeur het, maar hulle het in die voer-tuig geklim. Volgens die man en vrou woudie twee mans die Sassa-kaarte by hulle hê.Hulle het ook die man en vrou se pinkodesgevra.

Youth flood government offices

A total of 776matriculants fromacross theWestern Cape will

take part in fhe2014 PAY Projectas interns thisyear. The projectwas establishedby Premier HelenZille in 2011 and ismanaged by theDepartment ofthe Premier.

Hundreds of youth are taking part in a one-year internship programme as part of a pro-vincial government project.Minster for Finance, Economic Develop-ment and Tourism, Alan Winde, welcomedthe group of interns - all matriculants fromthe province - to the 2014 Premier’s Advan-cement for Youth (PAY) project during a ce-remony last week.Thewelcoming ceremonywas held on Fri-day 4April at theWesternCape Sport Schoolin Kuils River.In a statementWinde said theWesternCa-pe government will invest R27 million thisyear in the work experience internship formatriculants through the PAY Project.The PAY Project was established by Pre-

mier Helen Zille in 2011 and is managed bythe Department of the Premier.On Monday 776 interns started their one-year internships at one of Western Cape go-vernment’s 13 departments.“This is a great opportunity for our youngpeople to obtain the on-the-job experiencethey need to get their foothold in the econo-my.“Our goal is to ensure that all youth haveaccess to learning and employment opportu-nities so they canmake ameaningful contri-bution to the economy and ensure they livebetter lives.“We’re serious about skills developmentand over the next three years we will be in-vesting over R300 million in a range of these

initiatives,” Winde explained.The programme has created 2 251 intern-ships since 2012.As part of their training the students re-ceive an induction into how national and re-gional governments work.During their internship they complete se-veral skills development courses, includingfinancial management, IT training, CV wri-ting and interview skills.“I hope the young people participating inthe project take full advantage of this oppor-tunity. The family of a missing Kalkfonteinteenager say they fear for her safety.

Yonela Ntulwana (19) has not beenseen since she went missing on 2 March.

Her mother, Nosebengile Ntulwana, toldTygerBurger this week that she is stressedand worried about her daughter’s wellbe-ing.

Yonelwa, herself a mother of a two-year-old boy, stayed with her mother in the Vry-grond informal settlement in Kalkfontein,Kuils River. She is unemployed.

Asked about her possible whereabouts,her family, speaking outside the family’sshack, told TygerBurger they thought shemight have been with her best friend or per-haps her boyfriend, but that neither of thetwo had seen her.

“We also went to one of her friends in theNonzamo Informal Settlement in Strand,but could not find her there either,” her bro-ther, Vusumzi Ntulwana, said.

The family say it’s the first time that shehad disappeared.

Yonelwa left the house without her cell-phone.

A missing person’s notice with a photo-graph of the teenager is being distributedby the police and the Facebook page of thenon government organization for missingchildren, The Pink Ladies.

According to the details of the notice, Yo-nela was last seen at her house in Vrygrond.She apparently went to visit one of herfriends on the day of her disappearance.

Lucky Ntulwana, another brother, saidhis mother had been taken to hospital dueto the stress.

“She went on Sunday and she’s now ta-king pills to make her feel better,” he said.

He said his mother collapsed on Sunday,but that she had improved since her treat-ment.

Sergeant Andries Binedell, investigatingofficer at the Kuils River police, informedthe family during a visit that he had been

to Yonela’s friends, but she could not befound.

“They both said they saw her two daysprior to her disappearance,” he told Nose-bengile.

Lucky said they also walked through thearea to look for Yonela but no one had seenher.

Yonela is 1,4 metres tall, has dark eyes,and weight 65 kilograms. She also has soft,dark dreadlocks.

On the day of her disappearance she waswearing pink pyjama pants and a green jac-ket.

After a lifetime of abuse, three braveyoung people broke their silence andmade a daring stand against their tor-

mentor.Not only did local siblings Teri-Ann Ro-

binson (18), Kailee Robinson (16) and JasonRoberts (22) empower themselves by crea-ting a Facebook page they provided a plat-form for others suffering abuse to do the sa-me.

In essence, the Facebook page, startedeight months ago, is a forum created byteenagers where teenagers can speak outagainst abuse and domestic violence intheir home.

The siblings decided to go public withtheir own abuse after realising the despera-te plight of so many of their peers at theirschool.

“After we started talking about our owncircumstances, a floodgate of other, similarstories reached our ears,” says Kailee.

“Somanyother kids in our school toldmethat they don’t know whom to turn to orspeak to about abusive situations at homeor elsewhere, which gave us the idea,” addsTeri-Ann.

Their own page best describes their ob-jective.

“Our intention was to speak out... Fur-thermore, our situation is meant to assistanyone and help is given privately or peo-ple are referred if needed…The idea is alsoto empower ourselves and others, to healour trampled lives as best aswe can... Thereis no excuse for abuse! Stand up for yourrights. We are not victims we are survi-vors.”

Their personal ordeal has been endless.“Since we can remember it has always

been the same. He has abused us and ourmom verbally, emotionally, physically andeven financially,” says Kailee.

“I cannot remember the amount of timesI have wiped the spit off my mother’s face,or the amount of times that we had to listento his threats, often financial, which hasprevented my mother from leaving him forthe longest time,” adds Terri-Ann.

Older brother Jason often took the bruntof the abuse, with several physical attacks.

Due to their abuser’s financial reckles-sness the family was forced to move 17 ti-mes in 19 years and are currently again loo-king for accommodation.

“Apart from never having stability, theabuse has left us afraid and without confi-dence formost of our lives.Nobodycan ima-gine the hurt and pain we’ve suffered. Thisis the first time thatwehave spokenout andit feels good.”

In themeantime, after having to navigatetheir way through a maze of red tape, thesiblings obtained an interdict against theirabuser, but still question the system.

“He has been ordered not to come nearus, yet he is still in possession of a copy ofour house keys,” says Kailee.

What’s more, following the interdict,their abuser obtained a gagging order pre-venting them from writing about him onFacebook.

“We find it strange that the same court... is nowprohibiting us from exposing him.Nothing stops him fromharmingus and yetwe have been gagged from doing what em-powers us,” says Kailee.

In many ways the siblings view theirFacebook page as a means of protection.

“Starting this page has given us new ho-pe. It makes us feel like we have done some-thing good with the horrific circumstancesdealt to us,” says Terri-Ann.

A total of 12 police officers at theMfulenipolice station were recently promotedto the rank of sergeant.

The rank, according to senior manage-ment goes hand and hand with responsibili-ty and discipline.Brigadier Vincent Beaton, Kuils River

Cluster Commander, congratulated the 12menandwomenat the graduation ceremonyheld at the Mfuleni Police Station on Wed-nesday afternoon.“I am very proud of them but also excited

for them and their families. They have wai-ted quite a time, some of them between 10and 12 years,” Beaton said.He said as station management and clus-

ter commander he requires more leader-ship.“There is a big void in terms of leadership

in the lower levels, so we are very excitedand know they will make a big contributionand further the interest of the SouthAfricanPolice Service; to enhance discipline and toenhance service delivery to the broadercommunity,” Beaton said.He said normally it does not take very long

before someone gets promoted. “They are ac-tually busy drafting up a new policy for pro-motions, but normally it takes seven years,”Beaton said.As a sergeant, he explained, one is expec-

ted to be a supervisor over those in lowerranks.“It’s the first rank after the constable, peo-

ple look up to you. It is expected that you dothe parades at the station, you must inspectthe other members to see if they are dressedand armed properly; that they fulfil their du-ties in a professionalmanner. Youwill be re-garded as a senior although you’re at a lowlevel.“You will have to enforce the discipline

and rules of the police,” Beaton continued.Colonel Luyanda Damoyi, station com-

mander at the Mfuleni Police Station, saidone of the main aspects of being promotedfrom constable to sergeant is that it comeswith responsibility.“We want to wish them good luck. It’s not

just about a promotion, it’s about responsi-bility. They have more responsibility now,and must serve our community with com-

mitment and excellence. Theymust also gui-de the young ones, on and off duty, theymusthave that responsibility,” Damoyi said.He said in a police area like Mfuleni they

require people with a high level of discipli-ne.“It will help me a lot to have a sergeant

who is in charge of a group of people whowillmake sure that every instruction is com-plied with in terms of dealing with crime in

the hot spots, that is very crucial for us.“Thearea is big and there are a lot of crime

hot spots, Wesbank andMfuleni, and we aretalking about serious crimes: gangsterismand robberies.“We need a high level of disciplined offi-

cers therefore we are very happy that thispromotion will assist us. They will now beour eyes when we are not there,” Damoyisaid.

Die eerste Bokvaart verlaat Kaapstad vroeër vanjaar.

Bok Radio en TygerBurgerse bootvaart ’n belewenis“Hoe op aarde gaan hierdie magdom staal bo-op die water bly?” het Elzeth Austin angstiggedink toe sy die MSC Sinfonia se loopplankdie eerste keer betree het... met beelde uit diefliek “Titanic” wat deur haar kop maal.

Maar toe sy eers aan boord is, was dié ge-dagtes gou vergete. Elzeth was een van diebevoorregtes wat in Januarie vanjaar op dieeerste Bok Radio-bootvaart was – ’n onder-vinding wat sy as “’n belewenis” beskryf.Volgende jaar doen Bok Radio dit weer, maardié keer gaan TygerBurger saam en ons hetby Elzeth gaan inloer om te hoor waarna onskan uitsien. “As jy die inboekproses agter dierug het, is dit net genot van voor tot agter,”vertel sy.

“Die vaart uit die hawe was asemrowend,want jy sien die Moederstad uit ’n hele nuweperspektief,” sê sy.

A programme to keep children offthe streets and out of danger wasrecently presented to theyoungon-

es in the crime ridden community ofKalkfontein in Kuils River.

Funiswa Didishe, Safe Schools coordi-nator at the provincial department ofeducation, said the programme, invol-ving military-style drilling, is normallyfor schools that do not perform well, orwhere children are often involved withother activities such as gangsterism.

The programme to keep children posi-tively occupied was held over three daysat the Kalkfontein Primary School lastweek.

Disciplined drillFuniswa said the programme had tar-

geted 50 learners to be trained in a con-flict resolution programme.

“We started the programme and part-nered with the department of cultureand sport where we started with a work-shop in the mornings, after that we han-ded them over to the department of sportwhere they did sports.”

On Tuesday the children were joinedby a group of youngsters performing adrill sequence.

“The drill can be related to disciplineand they havedone a great job,” Funiswasaid.

Lorraine Koopman, drilling instruc-tor fromtheLightHouseChurch inKuilsRiver, concurred.

“I have worked with children for 11 ye-ars now. Last year we decided to startwith the drill class.

“I do not know much about music, butI can teach them to listen to the drumandcan discipline them, and that is a win-ning recipe.”

She said listening and obeying thesound of the drum is a good mechanismfor installing discipline in children, es-pecially children from impoverishedareas such as Kalkfontein where teen-agers often make the wrong choices.

“They listen to the drum. They have towalk straight and upright.

“It keeps them away from the dangersin the community,” Lorraine said.

Captain Isaac van Niekerk, spokesper-son for the Kuils River police, said:

“We believe that during the school ho-liday it is a time children get involvedin the wrong things.

“ That is why we work with the depart-ment of education and some communityorganisations in order to keep the guysbusy over this period.”

He said if the children are kept busyeffectively there is no time for them toget involved in the wrong things.

He said the police have been involvedwith such programmes for many yearsnow. “In the past we had our sportsagainst crime projects,” Isaac said.

An addition to the 2014 World TriathlonSeries calendar was in November an-nounced by the International Triath-

lon Union (ITU).For the first time ever, a World Triathlon

Series event will take place on the Africancontinent with a race slated to be held at theV&A Waterfront in Cape Town from 26 to 27April.

The World Triathlon Cape Town race willserve as the second stop on the eight-citytour which starts in Auckland from 5 to 6April.

Cape Town is one of only two cities to de-but on the WTS calendar in 2014, with Chica-go also hosting an event for the first time.

The world’s top triathletes have confir-med their participation in theCapeTown legof the series. With eight of the top ten elitemen on the start list, spectators can expecta tight, action packed race. Local hero Ri-chard Murray (ranked 5th) will take on Ma-rio Mola (ESP), who narrowly beat him by18 seconds in the World Cup season openerin Mooloolaba last month, as well as fellowSpaniard Javier Gomez who is number oneon the WTS rankings. With 15 and sevenWorld Series wins under their respectivebelts, Brownlee brothers Alistair and Jona-than are the most successful elite athletes inthe history of the series and will be lookingto retain their position.

Ladies hold their ownThe elite ladies race will certainly rival

the men’s in terms of action. With the topthree ladies on the WTS rankings, JodieStimpson (GBR), Non Stanford (GBR) andAnne Haug (GER) confirmed, the competiti-onwill beno less intense than the elitemen’srace. Olympic silver medallist Lisa Norden(SWE) will also be making her ITU World Se-ries comeback in Cape Town after the 2012Olympics. Along with Helen Jenkins (GBR),she’ll be looking to regain her former ITUWorld Triathlon Series glory.

In addition to the competitions, athleteswill be treated to a weekend full of festivitiesincluding sundownconcerts, a race exhibiti-on, kids and family races.

Stellenberg het sy eerste twee wedstrydetydens ’n toer in Noord-Italië baie maklikgewen, maar het toe in Treviso op ’n eien-aardige wyse sy rieme styfgeloop. Die gevolg was ’n nederlaagvan 25-31 vir die toerspan. D.F. Malan hetmet oorwinnings oor Louis Trichardt (10-6)en Bergvlam en Nelspruit (37-15) by die Wit-rivier-toernooi weggespring.

Die Kaapstad-meesters-swemspan hettweede geeïndig in die 30ste Suid-Afri-kaanse meesters-swembyeenkoms, watonlangs in Bloemfontein gehou is.

Altesaam 401 swemmers van oor diehele land het aan die kampioenskapsby-eenkoms deelgeneem.

Meesters-swem maak voorsiening virswemmers in alle ouderdomsgroepe van19 jaar en ouer. Die ouderdomme wordin vyfjaargroepe opgedeel. Alle afstandeen swemdissiplines word ingesluit.

Die plaaslike spanne was die Kaap-stad-meesters met 45 swemmers, KaapseDolphins met twaalf en Wynlande-mees-ters met nege.

Die Kaapstad-meesters het ook dievoorgeetrofee, wat toegeken word aandie klub met die meeste punte per swem-mer wat deelgeneem het, gewen.

Miems Swanpoel (79) is die oudste lidvan die klub wat aan die byeenkomsdeelgeneem het en het twee goue en twee

bronsmedaljes verower.Sanderina Kruger (65) het uitstekend

geswem en drie wêreldrekords laat spat.In die 50 m-vryslag het sy die wêreldre-kord gebreek in ’n tyd van 31:40 sek. Indie 100 m-vryslag het sy ’n spogtyd van1:09.63 behaal en toe in die 200 m-vryslagmet ’n tyd van 2:39:00 gewen. Hierdie re-kords moet nog amptelik deur FINA er-ken word. In totaal het Sanderina negegoue medaljes gewen en is beloon metdie byeenkoms se victrix ludorum-tro-fee.

Die 15de FINA-wêreld-meesters-swembyeenkoms vind van 27 Julie tot 10Augustus in Montreal, Kanada plaas.Sanderina Kruger en Rod Holshausengaan hieraan deelneem.

Die volgende meesters-gala – aange-bied deur Westelike Provinsie-meesters-swem – word op 10 April vanaf 18:30 bydie Langstraat-swembad, Kaapstad ge-hou.
