Bellville police’s own crime intelligence unit has launched numerous raids on the house Kingsley Ukatu (38) shared with Man- dy Williams (38) and two of her three chil- dren. Over a period of more than four years and several raids later, police were never able to find any drugs in the house, said Groenvallei Neighbourhood Watch vice-chairperson Criselda Greyling. “It took the Brackenfell police two months to capture them. Every time a raid was plan- ned for that house, you would see no druggy on the streets. They knew. We always said they were tipped off beforehand,” she said. A combined force, including a canine unit from Maitland and two other specialised units, swooped on the home on Thursday at about 21:30 Williams spoke to TygerBurger on Mon- day, after her court appearance. She said she and Ukatu had been together for eight years, five of which were spent in the home where they were arrested on char- ges of dealing in drugs and having at least R15 500 in suspected stolen goods on the pre- mises. According to the Brackenfell police spoke- sperson Erica Crous, an electronic scale and several zip-lock bags, as well as cash and fo- reign currency, television sets, a gas heater and various tools were confiscated during the raid. Williams claimed some of the items as her own property. V To page 2. The long-awaited wall of remembrance for the 10 school children who died at the Buttskop railway crossing five years ago, was finally un- veiled on Tuesday. Deputy mayor Ian Neilson officially unvei- led the recently erected Buttskop Memorial Wall to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the tragic accident in August 2010. The 10 children who lost their lives at the Buttskop level crossing in Blackheath were killed while being transported to school in a minibus-taxi, which collided with a train. The project was managed by the City’s parks department in consultation with Subcouncil 21. The construction of the memorial wall was subject to an extensive consultation process with the parents and relevant role players and it was decided to erect the memorial at the Wel- moed Cemetery along the R102 near Penhill Es- tate in Eerste River. Most of the children were buried there. Subcouncil 21 includes the areas of Kuils Ri- ver, Blackheath and Blue Downs. The ten children who died are Reece Smith (7), Michaela de Koker (11), Nolan February (13), Jody Phillips (13), Cody Erasmus (15), Na- dine Marthinisen (16), Jean-Pierre Willeman (13), Jason Pedro (14), Jade Adams (10), and Lisle Augis (11). I bought that television. They say I stole

goods, but there is the box of the contract

cellphone I bought, she said, showing Tyg-

erBurger a box with a couriers waybill en-

    velope still attached.

My kids and I are staying on inGroenval-

lei. I refuse to move out. Kingsley wont be

    comingbackhere.Mykids and Iwill bemak-

ing a clean slate, she said.

I am a mother and I have integrity. I will

show this judgmental community that I will

not fall down, she said. Im from good

stock, they dont knowme orwhere Im from

    or who I am.

It is in this community that my children

and I have been referred to as krs. They

are racist. How would you feel if your 12-

year-old comes running home, crying, be-

cause children called him a kr? she said.

What I do, I do for my kids, she said.

Williams confirmed she is accused num-

ber one, but denied that any charges had

been brought against Ukatu. All the char-

ges are against me alone, she said.

However, the Bellville police on Tuesday

    confirmed both she andUkatuwould appear

    on the mentioned charges.

    According to Bellville police spokesper-

son Captain Fienie Nimb, Ukatu will appear

in the Bellville Magistrates Court again on

    Friday.

    Ukatus appearance was hampered by

the fact he had no legal documentation to be

    in the country. OnFri-

    day he must produce

    the necessary docu-

    mentation.

    According to our

    information his pass-

    port has expired. The

    accused says he has

    applied to have his

    passport renewed. On

    Friday he will have to

    prove this to the mag-

    istrate or bedeemed il-

    legal in the country,

    she said.

In previous articles written by TygerBur-

ger since 2011, there has been a steady

stream of unknown people frequenting the

    couples home in Groenvallei.

    The neighbourhood watch alleges the

strollers and visitors are mostly drug ad-

dicts and a constant source of irritation to

    residents.

They only ever disappeared when there

was a police raid coming, said Greyling.

She and watch secretary Petro Neethling

and watch member Patsy Barnardo said on

Monday that they welcomed the arrests.

You have no idea how quiet its been

    around here since Thursday, Neethling

    said.

    Neethling added: The community will

give her another chance. But shes going to

have to prove herself. We dont understand

how shell be able to pay the rent nobody

in that house isworking, as far aswe know.

The watch bought paint and refurbished

the wall along one of the alleys where sus-

    pects used to hang out.

We patrol here everyday. We see the fa-

ces, we knowwho comes and goes. Does any-

one wish to tell us people to go into that

house to fetch water at twelve at night?

    Neethling said.

Neighbours will only realise the full im-

pact of the goings-on at that house once this

house is sold and there are new residents,

    said Greyling.

    A 21-year-old suspect was ar-

    rested for rape during Opera-

tion Fiela in Kuils River on

    Thursday.

    The provincial police de-

    partment says on 20 August

    at around 10:00, members

went to Kuils River to engage

    with commuters in an awa-

    reness campaign as part of

    their Operation Basadi Ba

    Fiela.

    At theKuilsRiver railway

    station, they were informed

by a member of the public

that he was worried about a

    schoolgirl, in full uniform,

who went with a taxi driver

and got inside the taxi, said

    provincial police spokesper-

    son Constable Noloyiso

    Rwexana.

    Police went to investigate

    and theynoticeda 14-year-old

    girl andaman inside the taxi,

    who were getting dressed.

    The girlwas still busy pul-

ling her pants up and tucking

    her school shirt into her

school pants. A case of rape

    is under investigation,

    Rwexana said.

    The suspect, a 21-year-old,

    was arrested and appeared is

    the Kuils River Magistrates

    Court on Monday 24 August.

lthough shopping expeditions can be a

tiring excursion for some, it is met

with a lot of enthusiasm by Stikland

    Psychiatric Hospital clients.

Established in 2008 and located on the hos-

pitals premises, the Stikland Ml, a sec-

ond-hand clothing shop, enables clients of

the facility to shop for their own clothing

    at no cost to them.

Store manager and member of the Health

Facility Board, Chantelle Van Niekerk, says

the shop is a great benefit to the clients.

Because many of our clients are finan-

cially constrained and have no family or

friends to rely on, the Stikland Ml enables

    themtoobtain clothingandessential items.

Van Niekerk said the shop operates on a

clothing voucher system to ensure a record

is kept of items leaving the shop.

The general public and staff members

have to purchase items using cash.

    Eachwardwill be informedofwhat items

are available at the shop. They will then

    identify which clients requirewhat clothing

    items, says Van Niekerk.

The unit manager of the ward will then

sign a voucher for each client, and a staff

memberwill accompany the client to the Sti-

kland Ml to purchase the clothing items.

Dressing rooms are also available for cli-

ents who would like to determine the fit of

an item before making a purchase, says

    Van Niekerk.

She says the facility is dependent on the

    generosity of the public.

The act of helping others has a profound

ability to create an improved sense of well-

being. We therefore encourage and invite ev-

eryone to donate to the StiklandMl all do-

    nations will be accepted.

Apart from clothing, Stikland Ml also

    stocks bedding, bric-a-brac, board games,

    puzzles, reading material and DVDs.

All donated products are also available to

staff and public at reasonable prices.

The funds generated go towards internal

projects for the clients and items like donat-

ed board games and puzzles are used by cli-

    ents for recreational purposes.

The hospital also boasts a library and a

hair salon. This service is available on

Wednesdays and is offered by a volunteer.

Brought to fruition and managed by the

Health Facility Board of Stikland Hospital,

the Stikland Ml has allowed community

members to become more aware and in-

    formed about mental health.

    Dalena Folscher, chairperson of Stikland

    Hospitals Health Facility Board, says:

When donating to an organisation, one be-

comes more informed about social needs.

The Stikland Ml is open on Mondays to

Wednesdays and Fridays from 09:00 to 14:00.

V Donations of clothing to stock the shop can be ar

ranged with Chantelle Van Niekerk on 021 940 8909

    or [email protected].

    Happiness over homes

Benedicta van Minnen (mayco member for human settlements) poses with all the new title deed owners at the City of Cape Town ceremony to

hand over the title deeds to residents of Happy Valley, Blackheath. The ceremony took place at the Blue Downs Sports Complex on Hindle Road,

    Blue Downs. PHOTO: CARL FOURIE

    T

he next 20 title deeds to the second

phase of low-cost housing for Happy

    Valley residents nearBlackheathwere

    handed over last Thursday.

The new residents received their keys

from the Citys mayco member for human

    settlements, Benedicta van Minnen.

The project, consists of over 1 400 new for-

malhouses and formspart of theCitys over-

all Upgrading of Informal Settlements Pro-

    gramme (UISP).

In total, the City will issue over 1 200 title

deeds tobeneficiaries of this project, who in-

clude inhabitants of the previous Happy

Valley informal area and backyard dwel-

lers from Happy Valley Phase 1.

The City is thrilled to be able to hand

over these title deeds to the beneficiaries

from the previous Happy Valley informal

    area, said van Minnen.

The Happy Valley Phase 2 housing pro-

ject was completed in October 2013 and is

jointly funded by the City and the provinci-

    al government.

It is incredibly important that benefici-

aries of housing projects receive title

    deeds.

This proves their ownership of a house

    andunlocks the economicopportunities that

come with owning an asset, she said.

Title deeds provide the evidence needed

to leverage this asset and for it to become

part of ones estate. Importantly, transfer-

ring title deeds is possibly one of the greatest

methods to bring redress to our residents.

    Warm hearts: Blackheath seniors

    belonging to the Greenfields/Gaylee

    Community Organisation recently

knitted a South Africa flag blanket.

    The group attended a workshop

where they learnt a number of

    skills, knitting being among them.

They feel the workshop has given

them so much, they are now giving

back to those in need by making

use of what they learnt at the

workshops. This has put them in

good spirits and now they want to

warm the hearts of those in need

    around them, said chairperson of

    the organisation and community

    worker Fransina Jafta. The blanket

was knitted for an elderly woman,

    Louisa January in Austinville,

    Blackheath.

    CHEVON BOOYSEN

    @chevonbooysen

    A

    n 83-year-old woman has

    one wish before she de-

    parts this world she

wants to meet her son who was

taken from her a day after she

    gave birth to him.

    Betty Maritz says her hearts

desire is to meet her only child

    who should be 64-years-old this

    year. Maritz tells her heart-

    wrenching storywith desperate

longing, saying she will only fe-

    el better once they reunite.

    Iwas 19when I fell pregnant.

At the time I lived with a wo-

man in Retreat who took me in

as her own daughter. She even-

tually noticed I was pregnant. I

was already in my second tri-

    mester, she says.

    She asked who the father

was and I told her. I suggested

the guy come meet her as well

but she did not want to hear

anything of it. Not long after,

the father of my child did not

    contact me anymore, Maritz

    says.

She says on the day she gave

    birth she remembers a midwife

    assisting with her delivery at

home. After giving birth I was

so tired and exhausted. All I

know is I gave birth to a boy

    who had a distinct birthmark

on his back. After the birth I

    was exhausted, my guardian

mother said we could go the

next day to give my childs de-

tails at the clinic, she recalls.

    She says the next morning

she was woken up and told to

wash her baby aswell as his clo-

    thes.

    My guardian then offered to

take my baby to the clinic and

    have his details registered. I

cant read or write so I gave her

my baby as she offered her

    help, Maritz says.

    When her guardian returned

    later that afternoon, she came

    home drunk and without Ma-

ritzs child. I asked her where

my child was and all she said

was: Wat worry jy vir jou? Jou

kind is vrek. (Why are youwor-

ried? Your child is dead). I

couldnt believe it and I kept as-

king her where my child was,

but she gave me the same res-

ponse each time. Up until today

I do not knowwhat happened to

my child on that day, but I have

a strong suspicion that he was

either sold or given away. I just

    want my child back, Maritz

    cries.

She adds her search for her

son never stopped, but due to

too little detail she has had no

luck. But I will continue, she

    says.

I feel like I was robbed of be-

ing a mother. My son might be

    out there thinking I abandoned

him, but I just want to see him

so I can tell him that is not what

    happened.

    Still searching

    for her son

    after 64 years

Betty Maritz (83) sits next to Rachel (right) who has tried to assist

her in her search for her son. PHOTO: CHEVON BOOYSEN

Betty Maritz shows a letter she sent to a newspaper in 1993 in a bid

to find her son. Maritz gave birth when she was 19 and hasnt seen

her child in 64 years after her foster mom returned from the clinic

    without him.

Use your phone to bust corruption

    T

he Justice Alliance of South Africa

(JASA) has launched a new platform

to enable citizens to take action

against corruption wherever it rears its

    head.

Expose It uses reports of bribery and

corruption collected on its website and

USSDphone app to fight corruption on eve-

ry level within public service organisati-

    ons, including government departments,

political parties and parastatals, said di-

rector John Smyth at last weeks launch.

As a socially driven movement, Expose

    It relies on citizen reports.

The more incidents reported, the more

hotspots are exposed for our legal team to

know exactly where to take action, said

    Smythe.

The reporting process is simple, free and

user friendly, making Expose It open and

accessible to allmembers of the SouthAfri-

can public on a mobile friendly website

    (http://www.ExposeIt.org.za) or even on

old cell phones without internet access by

dialing the free USSD number *134*1105#.

Incidents of corruption can be safely

    and anonymously reported from bribery,

back-handed deals and bullying to abuse of

    power, said Smythe.

    Unlike many other corruption organi-

sations, Expose Its legal team of experts is

dedicated to taking legal action and acting

on hotspots exposed by public reports on

our platform. Through JASA, we have the

support of the Hawks, Crime Intelligence,

    the National Prosecuting Authority and

Public Protector to help ensure cases are

    prosecuted whenever there is appropriate

    evidence.

To spread the word and galvanise sup-

port,Expose Ithas started an online protest

    under the hashtag #exposeit.

    JASA is an non-governmental-organisa-

tions comprised of lawyers committed to

working to advance justice in South Afri-

There seem to be quite a few

    unfortunate dog attacks

    reported lately: dog vs dog,

human vs dog, etc. The com-

    mon denominator here is at

least one dog off a leash. Come

on people, its not that difficult.

Put your dog on a lead. I have

dogs and Im a huge dog lover

but would never walk them off

    leash.

    My daughter was bitten by

a dog belonging to an idiot

down the road and is emotio-

    nally scarred to the point

where she is now terrified of

    strange dogs. His dog continues

    to roam the street unattended.

    The incident was reported, he

was warned, yet there has been

no change and the damage has

    been done to my child.

I dont blame the dog, I

    blame the owner but will

    certainly not hesitate to protect

myself or my children, by any

    means possible should any dog

off leash approach us in an

    agressive fashion. Would I also

    be charged with animal

    cruelty?

If you cant be a responsible

    dog owner, get a goldfish.

    Dogs need to be

    I couldnt agree more with

    Elaine Soutar (Kinders hard-

    loop steeds oor paaie,TB, 12

    August). My husband and I

travel to work every morning in

    the Brackenfell industrial area.

    Cars park on the pavements

    and pedestrians are forced to

    walk in the road. Ninety-nine

percent of the time they are

    wearing dark clothing and are

    Pedestrians need

    to think of visibility

A while ago you published a

letter of mine (TB, 5 August) in

    connection with the street

    people, with the bold heading

    Hose the People off the

    Streets. I strongly object to

your heading as it creates a

    completely false impression of

the content of my letter. Fine

    Spray could act as Deterrent

would have been a far more

    honest and less inciting

    heading.

    In subsequent letters written

    by certain contributors this

    Hose the People off the

    Streets heading is repeated

    alongside my name. This

    Finemist not the

    sameas hose

    creates the impression that it

was part of my original letter

and that I am some kind of

    callous individual.

    Obviously the intermittent

fine water spray idea was to act

    as a deterrent and encourage

the street people to move away

from the shop doorways. In fact

the spray used in veggie shops

is more of a mist than actual

    water droplets.

World Cup but the mold of said

    My sympathy to Merichias dog

    that was bitten (Disgusted by

big dog owners, TB, 19 Au-

    gust). This raises the question

of how owners who have big

dogs can give them the exercise

needed. Dogs need to run free

and sniff around and play with

other dogs. Having to walk at

the pace of its owner, though

    commendable for caring enough

to take the dog out, does not

really answer the need fully. In

    other countries they have

    designated dog parks where

dogs are free to be let off the

    leash and, because dogs are

    introduced to other dogs from

an early age, aggression is not a

    problem. In our country we

have leash and backyard dogs -

    so unnatural. Obviously owners

need to train their dogs and be

in full control should they let

    them off the leash anywhere.

    SLICE OF LIFE

    Hou verby of

    hou vas as jy

    inO-Kaap ry

Wanneer jy jou motor se neus in die

rigting van die Oos-Kaap stuur, sal jou

ken baie gou op die paneelbord beland as

jy kyk na die ontvouende landskap.

Elke paar kilometers lyk na n skildery

deur een of ander groot meester. Jy is

n Kamera is by sommige plekke

    twee provinsies soveel skoonheid huisves.

    just not easily seen.

    It should become a require-

    ment for pedestrians (adults

    and children) to wear some

    form of reflective clothing

    especially on dark and wet

    winter mornings. Even one of

    those sleeveless green luminous

bib type vests would do the

trick. They would fold up small

and need little space to be

    available when needed again.

    I saw a pedestrian with a

white rain suit, which is much

more visible. It is not always

    the drivers fault, pedestrians

    and drivers need to work

    together for safety.

    V

an al die lewenslesse wat Zelda la

    Grange by die ontslape oud-presi-

    dent Nelson Mandela geleer het,

wasdi van respek, eerlikheid en integri-

    teit veral blywend.

LaGrange het 19 jaar lank virMandela

in verskeie hoedanighede gewerk tot sy

dood toe op 5 Desember 2013.

Sy het vroue van oor die noordelike

    voorstede heen verlede Vrydag toege-

spreek oor haar ervaringe oor amper

Gend by Nitida-wyne aangebied ter vie-

    ring van Vrouemaand.

Die manier waarop jy enige mens be-

nader sal bepaal hoe die persoon jou sal

    behandel, het Madiba altyd ges.

En dit was juis die benadering totmen-

se wat Mandela so suksesvol as staats-

    man gemaak het.

Hy het almal om hom respekteer en

sy integriteit en eerbaarheid was onmis-

    kenbaar, s sy.

Dis veral die staaltjie oor n nietige ge-

    beurtenis opeenoorsesebesoekwathaar

    altyd sal bybly.

Madiba het my een laataand erg ont-

steld uit sy hotelkamer geskakel en be-

veel om dadelik die destydse polisie-

    kommissaris, JackieSelebi, inSuid-Afri-

    kerheidspersoneellede gesteel is, vertel

    stal is.

self inderhaas as getuie optree toe Ma-

Vir Mandela was daar nie n grys ge-

bied as dit kom by eerlikheid nie, s sy.

Madiba het vas daaraan geglo dat dit

makliker is om jouself te verander, eer-

    der as ander mense.

La Grange beskryf Nelson Mandela as

    nkomplekse, hardkoppige,maarbaie lo-

    jale persoonlikheid.

    Ookdiemanierwaarophysyeggenote,

    kig.

La Grange het in Junie 2014 haar me-

    moires Good Morning, Mr Mandela

laat publiseer waarin sy vertel van haar

    lewe saam met Mandela.

Die boek is in Desember van dieselfde

jaar aangewys as 2014 se topverkoper in

    Suid-Afrika.

Artscape Theatre Centre is a hive of stories

this August and September in celebration

    of Heritage month.

    Heritage Month means different things

for different people but Artscape is celebra-

ting heritage by telling stories and conside-

ring how narratives are reflected orally, in

    writing and other creative forms.

    Through various disciplines, Artscape

questions identity through a focus on who

we are, what we are and what we have

been, encouraging people to reclaim and

restore the important stories of our herita-

    ge, to challengemisappropriations and find

    healing.

Festival highlights include a new work,

    Inkundla, by Indoni Academy Dancers,

which looks at the theatre of life, and

Siembamba, a multilingual play which ex-

plores the life of a black domestic worker

and the white child she helped raise.

Choirs from around the province will

sing alongside the Cape Philharmonic Or-

chestra on Sunday 13 September for the

    Western Cape Choral Music Associations

Fans of more contemporary sounds can

queen Karen Zoid and soprano Zanne Sta-

    pelberg.

    cept of circumstantial inheritance through

sensational poetry and music while Words

ofWar by Anele Rusi will tell stories of her-

itage and history through inspiring poetry

    and songs of celebration.

Much of SouthAfricas heritage is tied up

in stories from neighbouring countries, a

point proven by Born around Here, a pro-

    duction by Botswanas Company@Maitis-

ong. The work tells the often unknown sto-

ry of Botswana and other neighbouring

countries contribution to the struggle for

freedom in South Africa through the eyes

    of a Botswana family.

Away from the stage, Artscape will host

    a dialogue titled ConnectingCreatives on

    Heritage Daywhile Artscapes Tunnel (mu-

studio from achieving its goal of raising

R20 000 to help Huis Jabes, a home for phy-

sically abused woman in the northern su-

    burbs, buy a house.

    The Wellness Through Movement Pila-

tes Studio is celebrating Womans month

    by hosting a pilates-thon on Saturday 29

    August between 08:00 and 18:00.

Ten hour sessions of pilates will be pre-

rity complex to raise funds for Huis Jabes.

The studio is one of 50 businesses invited

to join forces to help Huis Jabes to reach

their goal of raising R1 million by 31 De-

    cember to buy a house.

Since 2008, Huis Jabes has offered a safe

haven to victims of domestic violence.

    By using behaviour modification and

teaching new life skills, women are given

a second chance at life, says Huis Jabes

    founder Adri Klindt.

The objective is to remove women from

their circumstances and equip them with

the right mentality and life skills to confi-

dently take their rightful place in society.

We solely rely on contributions from in-

    dividuals and businesses, said Klindt.

A fund-raising campaign will be laun-

ched in September to purchase a house to

assure the sustainability of Huis Jabes.

Those interested in the pilates-thon can
