Kuils River police arrested a house rob-bery suspect and are still searching forothers following an armed attack at a

house in Soneike recently.According to police spokesperson Captain

Isaac van Niekerk the incident occurred inGladioli Street onWednesday 9 December atapproximately 21:35.He said the residents

were attacked by un-known robbers.“The people inside

the house managed todefend themselves andhid in a room wheretheywere able to escapethrough a window,”Van Niekerk explained.Kuils River police

members who were onpatrol in the vicinityand neighbourhoodwatch members re-sponded to the crime.“A suspect was no-

ticed at the scene.Whenhe saw the police, hetried to flee. He thenstarted shooting at po-lice officers,” Van Niek-erk said.On the Kuils River

Community’s Facebookpage one resident de-scribes the incident aschaotic: “It was thescariest encounter I’veever had. Gun shots, breaking glass, peoplescreaming, police sirens. . . it was totalchaos.”The suspect was eventually arrested by

the police with the assistance of an officer

of Bassett North Security as well as mem-bers of the neighbourhood watch.Bassett responded to the emergency call at

21:30. According to the security company’sreport, the suspects had managed to breakinto the house through the front door. Theywere in the house with the home owners.“It is unknownhowmanyrobberswere in-

volved in the event,” van Niekerk said.He said aToyota double-cab thatwas alleg-

edly used in the rob-bery, raced from thecrime scene.“The police chased

the bakkie and the vehi-cle collided with anoth-er car. The driverjumped out of the vehi-cle and ran away,” VanNiekerk said.Some of the stolen

itemswere retrieved in-side the double-cab.These included a laptopworth R5 000, a Sam-sung tablet worthR3 000, a black tableworth R3 000, a plasmatelevision set worthR10 000, a black iPhoneworth R10 000 and thecomplainant’s wallet.The double-cab, it is

said, was reported sto-len in Parow.A firearmwas also re-

trieved.Police are investigat-

ing a case of attemptedmurder.

No serious injuries were reported, but ac-cording to a Bassett spokesperson, the homeowners were taken to hospital with severalinjuries inflicted when they tried to escapethrough the bathroom window.

TheCape Town branch of theNGOGift of theGivers recently paid a visit to the Kleinvleipolice where they donated several items.Captain Florina Muller, police spokesper-

son, said the police, the neighbourhoodwatch structures in the area and the localcommunity police forum (CPF) held theirend-of-year on Thursday when they weresurprised by the visit.She said the organisation formed a close

partnership with the CPF and neighbour-hoodwatches in the areawhoworks diligent-ly throughout the year.“Gifts were handed out to the neighbour-

hood watch volunteers to acknowledge the

excellent work done, as a gratitude of appre-ciation to the community of the Greater BlueDowns police cluster. The community mem-bers who received some of these gifts wereencouraged by the Blue Downs cluster com-mander, Brigadier Vincent Beaton, the sta-tion commander, Colonel Vernon Bester andthe CPF chairperson, Julian Unthank to jointhe neighbourhood watches in their respec-tive areas and in so doing help to containcrime in the four respective sectors.About 200 community members attended

the event and indicated that they were will-ing to join the neighbourhood watches in fu-ture, Muller said.

Some children from Eerste Riverand surrounding areas were re-cently spoilt with a movie – similar

to that in a theatre – thanks to the gener-osity of community workers and the po-lice.The daywhich sawnearly 100 children

attend themoviewas held in a bid to helpkeep themoff the streets andout of troub-le.The event, themed “A day at the mov-

ies”, was held at Spurwing PrimarySchool on Thursday and was organisedby the local Kleinvlei police, communitypolice forum (CPF) and neighbourhoodwatch structures.The function was attended by the

Kleinvlei police station commander, Col-onel Vernon Bester, and CPF chairmanJulian Unthank.Police spokesperson Captain Florina

Muller said children from all over theBlue Downs police cluster precinct at-tended. The four sectors in the communi-ty include Kleinvlei, Eerste River, Mali-bu Village and Blackheath.

“The event was led by the chairpersonof subforum 3 in Eerste River, AyeshaDanster. She was assisted by the police,her family members, colleagues andfriends.”She thanked the principal and govern-

ingbodyof SpurwingPrimary for theuseof the school’s hall to make this eventmemorable for the 100 kids from disad-vantaged communities.“Ayesha gave the children a word of

advice and also gave them safety tipsabout child abuse and the five goldenrules to stay safe during the holidays andaway from strangers.“She encouraged them to say no to

gangs and drugs,” Muller said.The children were also entertained by

a role-play on crime prevention.The children then watched a movie

while eating popcorn and drinks.“This experience is not familiar to the

majority of the children and most ofthem experienced it for the first time.“They also had a dance competition

where medals were given to the threewinners,” Mulleradded.Santa Claus also

paid the small ones avisit after ice creamwas served.“They forgot about

the ice cream andthey ran to SantaClaus with his redand white coat. Theexcitement for themwas so big; it givesyou tears in the eyeto see that picture,”Muller said.All of the children

received party pack-ets, presents, andcupcakes at the endof the day.

The Melton Rose disaster risk manage-ment unit along Albert PhilanderRoad came up tops at an awards cere-

mony held in Cape Town recently.The unit was named Unit of the Year at

the City of Cape Town’s safety and securitydirectorate’s inaugural joint annual awardsevening for volunteers.The ceremony is held to acknowledge the

contribution of volunteers in different de-partments. These departments include lawenforcement, disaster risk managementand fire and rescue services.Apart from the unit gaining this prestig-

ious award, several of its members were al-so honoured.Volunteer Pyron Isaacs ofMeltonRose re-

ceived a certificate of appreciation, whileJacobus Fortuin, also of Melton Rose, wasawarded for his 20 years of service.The award ceremony was held on Tues-

day 8 December at the banqueting hall inthe Civic Centre.The ceremony acknowledged the contri-

butions of approximately 800 volunteersacross the law enforcement auxiliary ser-

vice, the disaster riskmanagement centreand the fire and rescueservices.Some of those recog-

nised have devoted asmany as 25 years of vol-unteer service, whileothers have clocked upanywhere between6 000 and 9 000 hours ofservice.“Adecade agowehad

only a handful of die-hard volunteers left inthe city.“Five years ago, we

kicked our recruitmentand training pro-grammes into highgear and now we haveclose on 800 volunteers. Two of our volun-teer services are unique in South Africa be-cause only the disaster risk managementvolunteer service is a requirement, so wehave gone above and beyond with our law

enforcement and fire and rescue volun-teers,” said Mayco member for safety andsecurity, JP Smith.The programme serves as a key example

of how progress can be made possible.

Kuils River is set to become one of the areasto benefit from a programme which willhelp alleviate traffic congestion in the area.The City of Cape Town’s Congestionman-

agement programme sets out the expendi-ture, infrastructure projects and other in-terventions aimed at addressing traffic con-gestion in the city over the next fivefinancial years.In a statement issued last week, Mayco

member for transport, Brett Herron, said atotal of R750 million will be spent over thisperiod for road infrastructure projects.“The programme prioritises the conges-

tion points and specifies how the City willbegin to address this – not only in terms ofinfrastructure, but also in terms of opera-tions and behavioural change,” Herronsaid.Kuils River was identified as one of the

key areas to benefit from the programmefollowing a congestion study.“The congestion management pro-

gramme was subsequently initiated in Au-gust this year when council supported theallocation of R40 million in the current fi-nancial year as interim relief to kick-startprojects in these areas,” Herron said.

“Our information shows that commutersin the Kuils River, Kommetjie and Blaauw-berg areas travel on average twice as longduring the peak period compared with theoff-peak period to reach their destinations.The peak period in these areas extends forthreehours as comparedwith the twohourselsewhere in the city. These areas are there-fore the first pressurepoints tobeaddressedby the City over the next five years.”The roads to benefit from the programme

include Bottelary, Saxdowns, Amandel andthe nearby locatedBelharMainRoad, EricaDrive and Okavango Road in Brackenfell.

om die pad te herbou nie, voeg hy by.“Daarom het die departement besluit om

die lewevandie pad te verlengdeur die kan-te te versterk met randstene en ’n bitumi-neuse slytlaag aan te bring.”Die randstene is gelê deur ’n plaaslike

kontrakteur en die slytlaag is gedoen deurPower Construction. Plaaslike arbeid isook gebruik om die werk te voltooi.Van Dalen sê die werk sal voor Kersfees

The Kalkfontein Primary School haslost its leader.Described as a person who was

“open and someone with whom one couldalways talk to”, theprimary school’s princi-pal Marius Vercuil passed away at theweekend.Dawn Roode, a community worker who

worked with Vercuil at the school, runningseveral projects, said he will be sorelymissed. “He always had an open door at hisoffice,” Roode said.Vercuil had been on sick leave for nearly

two years after being diagnosed with can-cer, she said.“I knew him very well.“We regularly ran projects at the school

during the school holidays and he alwayssupported us.“He alsomade it possible for Stellenbosch

University students to use the school oncea month to transform the school’s hall intoa clinicwhere people could get treated,” sheremembers.Vercuil passed away on Sunday.“Our sincere andheartfelt condolences to

the Vercuil family and Kalkfontein Prima-ry School’s learners and staff for the loss oftheir principal, Mr Vercuil,” Roode wroteon Facebook this week to share the sadnews with the rest of the community.She saidVercuilwas the secondprincipal

The Kuils River Community Police Fo-rum (CPF) will be hosting a safetyplanning meeting early in January.

The meeting will take place on Sat-urday 20 January and starts at 09:00until 14:00.

Captain Isaac van Niekerk, policespokesperson, says the purpose of themeeting is to compile a communitysafety plan.

“All organisations and individualswho have an interest in crime preven-tion in Kuils River are hereby invitedto attend this meeting,” he says.

Members pay for gifts at centreMembers of the Kuils River police re-

cently paid a visit to a local chil-dren’s home as part of the 16 days of

activism campaign.“The police organised a fun day for the

children at Huis Susan Lapoorta, a child andyouth care centre facility,” Van Niekerksays.

The centre, located in Samuel Street, Sa-repta, provides residential care to more thansix children outside their family environ-ment.

Van Niekerk said the police’s Men forChange as well as its Women’s Network do-nated the money to purchase a small Christ-mas gift for each child.

“The children took the opportunity tomeet the uniformed members and adminis-trative personnel of their police station,”Van Niekerk says.

Police members took the opportunity tocommunicate to the children on a one-on-one basis in an attempt to establish a trustrelationship between the children and them-selves.

The Kuils River police recently paid a visit to Huis Susan Lapoorta, a child care centre, where giftswere handed out to the residents. Captain Isaac van Niekerk, Mina Majiedt, Regina Soman, Joline DeWater, Lisa Links, Corina Schiedekat and Sergeant Liesel Beukes all attended the event last Wednesday.

Meet Lakheni, a Grade 9 learner fromMthatha, who, at the age of 15 came homefrom school one day to the news that his fa-ther had suddenly passed away.

His world is turned upside down and be-ing the eldest of three children, Lakheniknew that he was now considered to be theman of the house.

His mother never had a formal job and hissiblings were still in primary school. With-out any warning, this child goes from hav-ing the challenge of passing Grade 9 to tak-ing responsibility for helping his motherput food on the table.

Under the guidance of the African Schol-ars Fund (ASF), he registered at a publicFET College for NCV level 2 in electrical in-frastructure construction.

Three years later, despite having to workover weekends, Lakheni completed his NCVlevel 4 and is now 18 years old. He coura-geously decided to leave Mthatha for PortElizabeth and buckled down for a further 18months to complete his N4 to N6. This he did

successfully and soon thereafter found him-self gainfully employed.

“When I arrived at PE College, my life wasalready sorted by the ASF – from registra-tion tuition fees, books and transport,” hesays. “All I had to do was to present the ac-ceptance letter I received from the ASF soI could completely focus and concentrate onmy studies.”

He says that when the ASF team visitedthe college to present a student supportworkshop at the beginning of the year, itwas an amazing opportunity to finally havemet them after supporting him for the restof his school career right through college.

The ASF, through awards and guidanceassists promising young schoolchildrenfrom desperately poor homes to completetheir secondary (Grades 8 to 12) or technicalvocational education training college edu-cation. of the suffering over the years,” Joan said.The gathering outside court on Thursday

comprised members of several non-profitorganisations, early childhood develop-ment centres, neighbourhood watch struc-tures, the local ministers’ fraternal, differ-ent religious bodies, different political par-ties and members of the community.“This eventwas to end off 16 days of activ-

ism in support of Sylvia, the mother of Va-lencia, and other victims of rape andabuse,” Joan said.In court Elmario Maasdorp, the fourth

suspect accused of murdering Valencia,madeabrief appearance. The casewaspost-poned to 2 February 2016 and Elmario (36)remains in custody.

Transport for Cape Town, the City’s transport authority,intends to construct a new interchange betweenthe R300 freeway and Bottelary Road. The worksentail the construction of on and off ramps with anew bridge over the Kuilsrivier. The works alsoinclude two new signalised intersections withturning lanes on Bottelary Road.

Construction is to start in early-January 2016 with ananticipated completion date of January 2017.

During this time traffic will be accommodated onthe existing dual carriageway on Bottelary Road.One lane will be closed for certain periods duringconstruction along the section between the La BelleRoad and Amandel Road intersections. Traffic onthe R300 freeway will not be affected. The shouldersoutside the yellow line will be closed off withconcrete barriers for the safety of the constructionworkers.

Despite having to fight a life-threatening illness, Kuils Rivercommunity worker Dawn Phil-

lips still makes it her duty to care andprovide for the less fortunate.Dawn (61) has beenworking in Kalk-

fontein and other parts of Kuils Riverfor more than five years – runningsoup kitchens, handing out donatedclothes, and organising and hostingluncheons for seniors and Christmasparties each year.

In 2011 the mother of two was diag-nosed with multiple myeloma, a can-cer that starts in thebonemarrowplas-ma cells. This however did not deter ordiscourage her from continuing withwhat she describes as her calling. Herlove for children is too big, she says.

“I was a Sunday school teacher in1977 and always had a love for chil-dren. I developed a passion to workwith underprivileged children,” shesays.

Started volunteering at BadisaAfter moving with her family from

Durban toCapeTown in 2000, she start-ed working in Happy Valley nearBlackheath, then in Vrygrond, Kalk-fontein.

She started out as a volunteer atCape Town based NGO Badisa, andcontinued to do community work afterparting ways five years ago.“Iworked alone at first. I stirred pots

by myself and fed the needy. At onepoint I questioned God, but He blessedme,” she explains with tears in hereyes.

Dawn joined a support group at thelocal counselling organisation Hope

House where she met several womenwho started helping her and does so upto this day.

Khadija Wilkinson, Hester Petersenand Tessa Ruiter all joined the formerPort Elizabethian. Today they feedhundreds on a weekly basis throughthe soup kitchen project in Brenda,Elizabeth and Elmarie streets, Kalk-fontein.

“Some of these women have theirown issues to deal with, but despitethis they still assist those in need.

“They are my angels.“There are times when I needed to

go for radiation, and they will carryon,” Dawn explains.

‘I don’t think of my cancer’She adds: “I trust that they will take

the baton and run with it.”Her vision, she says, is for the soup

kitchen, its volunteers and communi-ty to become self sustainable.

Earlier this year Dawn featured ina television programme entitled SAHeroes – a documentary which pro-filed her and the work she does in thecommunity. The programme wasscreened on eTV.

“In 2011 the doctors toldme that 85%of my body was affected by multiplemyeloma. Last year it was down to on-ly 5%,” she says smiling.She adds: “I don’t think of the can-

cer. It is not a problem in my life. Iwant to tell people that they should notallow any form of cancer to affect themnegatively. You have a choice. Lookaway. Do not focus on the illness.”She says after learning she was sick,

she was motivated to work harder.“I will fight it. The doctor at Tyger-

bergHospital said I amhermiracle pa-tient.”

The crime statistics for KuilsRiver seem to be unreliable.The recorded statistics for theftof motor vehicles and motorcy-cles are an example of this. Itseems highly unlikely thatwhile there were 189 cases ofmotor vehicle and motorcyclethefts reported in 2011/12, thatthere would suddenly be 0cases in 2012/13. Needless tosay, it seems equally unlikelythat if the 0 cases reported in2012/13 were accurate, that thesudden increase to 293 cases in2013/14 would be correct. Ofcourse, the same logic appliesfor the fact that cases of motorvehicle and motorcycle theftsuddenly dropped to 0 again in2014/15.

I have written to the policecomplaints agency, to probethe matter. The fact that thesestatistics are questionable mustbe investigated.

The Kuils River crimestatistics revealed a 122%increase in murders betweenApril 2013/14 and April2014/15. However, it is doubtfulwhether this is accurate,following the apparent incon-sistency in the motor vehicleand motor cycle theft.

If we do not have reliablestatistics, how can we knowwhere resources should go inkeeping ourselves safe? KuilsRiver is experiencing rampantcrime. It places the entireKuils River community at riskbut it especially threatens themost vulnerable.We needaccurate statistics to determinehow to diffuse crime.

Wow, what a show, and whata wonderful line-up of talentedartists. One forgets just howmany world class artists wehave in South Africa.

Although we have lived in theCape for many years, and wehave been to Grand West onnumerous occasions, we hadnever been to a show at theArena, so this was a first forus, and a real treat.

As always Soli Philander withhis wonderful sense of humourkept the audience in fits oflaughter, as did Emo Adamswith his body moves. Steyn andthe Steyners started off theshow, and the Steyners Bandalso backed André Venter(formerly with Boy BandRomanz). We thoroughlyenjoyed listening to Andrésinging, and him paying tributeto both Taliep Pietersen andZayn Adams. The crowd gaveAndré a standing ovation at theend of his performance.

Then the Rockets, whom wehave never seen, appeared onstage and got the audienceswinging, livening up the entireshow as well as paying tributeto Ricardo who had passedaway during that week.

As Soli said, he always leavesthe best for last, which was sotrue – we love the music of Dr.Victor and the Rasta Rebels,who also rocked, and got theaudience on their feet.

The concert finished aftermidnight, and we by the timewe got home it was near 02:00.A late night indeed, and some-thing we have not done inmany years, but it was really aconcert that we thoroughlyenjoyed, and will not easilyforget.

telkemaal luid toegejuig is nie. Die koor vandie Frank Pietersen-musiekskool, onder lei-ding van Arno Jones, het die prentjie afge-rond en die Stellenbosse Stadskoormet PaulLoeb van Zuilenberg as dirigent was uit-muntend. Die musikale regisseur van dieproduksie, Melissa van der Spuy, verdienook lof.Die aand is moontlik gemaak deur Tyger-

vallei-sentrum, TygerBurger, Tygerberg104fm en Slender Wonder.Die promotor, Gerhard Meyer, het aange-

dui dat hy dit oorweeg om die produksie vol-gende jaarna ’nnuwevenue indieWes-Kaapte skuif. Hy beoog ook om Klassieke Kersfeesin die res van die land op die planke te bring,met Pretoria en iewers langs die Suid-Kaap-se kus as moontlikhede. Die vier soliste van Klassieke Kersfees van 2015 het hul uitstekend van hul taak gekwyt.

Nie eers die wind wat elke nou en dan sterkgewaai het kon Paul Loeb van Zuilenberg vanstryk af bring nie. Die Stellenbosse Stadskoorverdien groot lof.

Die koor van die Frank Pietersenmusiekskool het die prentjie voltooi.

By tye was die meer as 3000 mense by die konsert tjoepstil. André Schwartz het met diePhantom of the Operaliedjie “Music of the Night” die gehoor in vervoering gehad.

The body of a 17-year-old Eerste Riverteenager was recovered from the seathis weekend following a drowning in-

cident last week.The boy was swimming with a group of

friends at the jetty at Strand beach when helanded indifficulty in thewater.Hedrownedon Thursday afternoon around 13:00. An ex-tensive search was launched, but no bodywas found on the day. The police’s divingunit discovered his body two days later onSaturday 12 December.“This office can confirm that the body of

17-year-old Ashwin Johannes was discov-ered in Strand on Saturdaymorning after heallegedly drowned,” provincial policespokesperson Lieutenant Colonel AndréTraut said on Monday.A death inquest docket was registered.

On Friday the emergency ambulance ser-vice ER24 issued a statement in which thecircumstances around the incident were ex-plained.“It is understood that the group of boys

were swimming near the jetty when one ofthem apparently had some difficulty andwas swept underwater.”The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI)

in Gordon’s Bay was one of the first emer-gency units to respond to the drowning.“We launched our sea rescue craft ‘Spirit

of Surfski’ and dispatched rescue swimmersto the scene,” said NSRI Gordon’s Bay depu-ty station commander Edward Russouw.A K-9 search and rescue team also joined

the search efforts while the Law Enforce-ment Marine Unit launched a rescue jet-skito assist the NSRI sea rescue craft in theirsearch.Despite an extensive air, sea and shore

search, there was no sign of the missingteenager on the day of the incident.The police dive unit continued the search

on Friday.According to Edward the family of the boy

their children to be safe and alert duringthis period.Soemyha Jonas, a social worker em-

ployed at the Centre for justice and crimeprevention (CJCP) in the crime riddenWes-bank, this week issued some safety tips forboth parents and teenagers which they canuse to safeguard themselves during the hol-idays.“The festive season is celebrated as a joy-

ous and celebratory occasion. Many peopleare preparing for family visits and familytrips, however, as a community we shouldalso be alert of what is happening aroundus and constantly ensure the safety of eachother,” said Soemyha, who also works onthe CJCP’s family preservation project.

Some tips for parentsSome tips for parents to keep in mind

whilst enjoying the festive season includeto be aware at all times of where their chil-dren are and where they are going.“If they are not with you, who are they

with?” Soemyha said.Parents are also asked when going out

with toddlers oryoung children, to tag themwith their particulars such as their name,surname, address and a contact number.“Never leave your children unattended,

but ensure adult supervision at all times.When you go out with your children, bealert at all times, take note of your sur-roundings and if you are near water, neverleave your children unattended.

Tips for children“Teach your children to know important

information such as their address, name,surname and contact details. If they findthemselves lost, teach them to go to a policeofficial and relay these details to them sothat they know who to speak to and whatto say,” Soemyha said.Similar safety tips have been issued for

teenagers.“Always inform an adult about where

you are going, with whom you are going tobe with and where you are going to. Givean adult the contact details of someone youare going out with or their parents. Beaware and alert of the surroundings andpeople and do not consume anything thatyou are not comfortable with or that hasbeen opened prior.“Lastly, when you are going out, always

stick together with your friends, and don’tgo to public bathrooms alone,” he warned.
