The remains of a caracal dis-covered recently in themid-dle of a road in Sarepta,

Kuils River, left many residentshere wondering about its origin.The animal was found lying in

Sarepta Road a week ago. It isstill unclear as towhat caused itsdeath, however some residentsbelieve it had been struck by amotor vehicle.Photos of the wild animal

taken by resident Peter Bobbertwere uploaded onto the KuilsRiver Community Page on Face-book on Thursday 3 September.Since then a total of 28 peoplecommented on the post, most ofwhom wondering where the catcame from and how it ended upin the quiet residential area.“Oh shame. Would be interest-

ed to know how it got here,” oneresident wrote.“Oh my heck! We have wild

cats here,” another said.Another responded: “Oh my

word. I thought I was seeingthings early this morning on myway to work. So it was a rooikat(caracal), but how in the worlddid a rooikat end up in a residen-tial area? This is very strange.”Someone else wrote: “Gosh! I

saw this yesterday. Definitelynot something you see everyday.”

According to Bobbert, the pho-tographer who noticed the ani-mal while on his to way to drophis childrenat school, the animalhas been lying in Sarepta Roadsince early that morning.“How did this wildcat get into

Kuils River; such a beautiful ani-mal,” he wrote on the Facebookcommunity page.Some residents believe the ani-

mal escaped from a nature re-serve; others say a nearby farm.“The nearest place to us is the

Zevenwacht Farm, but that is al-most 15 minute’s drive from us,”Bobbert told TygerBurger.The sighting of caracal in the

Kuils River area is however notas unusual as people may think.According to information

found on the Urban CaracalProject’s website – a projectstarted in September 2014 to re-search the population, size andhealth of the caracal populationin the Cape Peninsula – caracalsare widespread within southernAfrica, and according to re-searchers they are not uncom-mon in Cape Town.Dr Jacqueline Bishop, a

senior lecturer at the depart-ment of biological sciences at theUCTwho assists the Urban Cara-cal Project with research sup-port, said caracal occur through-out the surrounding areas ofCape Town.

Cases of TB and asthma among resi-dents in the impoverished Kalkfon-tein, Kuils Rivermight soon be a thing

of the past, thanks to the installation ofbrand new ceilings in several homes.News of the installation was announcedat a community meeting held recently –news that was welcomed by the majority ofresidents, said Johannes Pula, chairman ofthe Kalkfontein Development Forum.The installation forms part of the City ofCape Town’s ceiling retrofit programmeand is run by the department for humansettlements. Similar projects are done invarious areas across the city.Funding for the first phase amounts toR116 million and will see the retrofitting ofsome 8 000 units, the City said.

“This is something good, especially withregards to the people’s health conditions inthe area,” Pula told TygerBurger.The roofs, according to residents, containasbestos – the cause of many people heredeveloping TB and asthma.“Cases of TB and asthma will hopefullynow decrease,” Pula said.Justin Wildebees, a community workerwho also attended the meeting, said manyresidents fall ill due to the asbestos.“We are really happy that the council haskept its promise,” he said.About 300 low cost houses built before2005 will each receive a new ceiling.Houses located in Isabel to Reuter Streetwill be serviced as part of Phase 1 of theproject, while homes in Verenigde, ElmarieandElizabeth Streetwill be done in Phase 2.Wildebees added: “The people are excited.This could not have come at a better time.

We are looking forward to it.”The project, according to the City, willcommence next month.“Between 1994 and 2005, the majority ofstate-subsidised housing units were con-structed without insulated ceilings andweather-proofing.“This was because the subsidy whichwasthen provided by the national governmentdid not make provision for the installationof ceilings.“Having to live without a ceiling hascaused much discomfort for residents whoare subsequently affected by the poor ther-mal performance of the homes and conden-sation which gives rise to damp conditionsand inferior internal air quality,” maycomember for human settlements, Benedictavan Minnen, said.The project is expected to be completed bythe end of December.

Not only was Clover waste that was intend-ed for pigs sold as food to poor communities,but according to a sourcewithin the compa-ny, fresh stolen produce left the distribu-tion centre in Bellville in the same way.Some of the plant’s senior managementwas implicated in the scam as well, an em-ployee alleges.Clover twice terminated their contractwith the recycler initially tasked with re-moving and carting away their rotten pro-duce, which was to be removed to designat-ed pig farms, but instead was sold to thepoor on the Cape Flats.Clover has, since the first article ap-peared in TygerBurger (“Recycler sells oldfood”, 5 August) launched a full-scale inves-tigation into these and other allegationsabout the recycling company’s fraud.Since that article, however, the employeehas contacted TygerBurger to raise con-cerns thatCloverwasbeing robbed inbroaddaylight of its fresh produce.These items were apparently leaving thedistribution centre hidden and neatlypacked – right under the liquid waste in-tended for the pig farms in the same drums.As soon as the items left, they were soonrepackaged and resold, as reported earlier.The source tells of an incident onTuesday25Augustwhich sparkeda freshbout of sus-picion among himself and colleagues.“On Tuesday 25 August a security guardwas checking the drums leaving the distri-bution centre with his stick. He stuck it in,and when he took it out, he had impaled ablock of fresh cheese that was at the bottomof the drum,” the source alleges.“When he stuck the stick in the secondtime, he found there was more fresh stuffat the bottom, beneath all the milky yuck.The security guard then asked the pig farmemployee [who was in charge of removingthose drums] to call her supervisor.”According to the source, what happenednext was that a senior manager at the Clo-ver plant stepped in. This manager is saidto have inspected the drum, and when thesecurity guard was about to remove morefresh produce, allegedly stopped the guard.“Within a week, the Fidelity guard wasre-assigned to a different distribution cen-tre and sent away from the Clover plant!”the source says.“We’ve decided to stand up for ourselves.But in doing so, we also have a ‘noose’around our neck,” he says.The source further claims there is a food

store in Parow Industria selling the stolenClover produce to the public.The shop is apparently “situated near thePeninsula Beverages plant, just past theParmalat building”, he says. There are nofancy banners depicting the name of theshop. But, he says, as soon as you enter, youcan see crates and boxes stacked to the leftof the shop, behindwhichworkers are busyremoving the original Clover packaging,then resealing and vacuum packing it.“It’s Clover’s bacon being sold there. Theshop workers simply repackage it. You see,bacon ‘blowsup’ inside the packagingwhenit goes off. Theworkers simply take theplas-tic off, then reseal the bacon in clean plas-tic,” he says.“The shop’s products are all expired. I de-liberately bought two Clover juice bottlesfrom them on 23 October last year. One hadexpired on the 15th, the other the 19th.”Back at the distribution centre, thesource adds another concern. The rottenliquid was being drained into the Bellvilleplant’s water drainage system.“The drums are stacked up at the plant;they stink and carry worms, while they areawaiting disposal. At the ‘wash bay’, someof the old milk and yogurts are being dis-posed of through the outlet pipes into thewater drains.“This is a short-cut to get rid of some ofthe waste that actually should be transport-ed to the pigs. If they’re disposed of in thisway, there’s no need to have as manydrums.“This is wrong. If a health inspector goesthere, Clover will be in big trouble.“You have to understand: The birds don’teven fight over theworms, there are just toomany – they simply gorge themselves.”Clover responded to a media enquiry cit-ing theywere still conducting and are in theprocess of concluding their full-scale inves-tigation into the allegations of fraud andtheft at its Bellville plant.They confirmed to TygerBurger that ille-gal activity has taken place at their CapeTown operations and a case was openedwith the South African Police Service.Clover said it was seriously concernedabout the allegations quoted in the article,especially in light of their quality and inter-nal control systems implemented.“Thereare internal risk systems to reportunlawful activity to deal with these issuesthrough an anonymous whistle blower hot-line,” said spokesperson Morné Reinders.“The company is committed to maintain-ing the highest standard of quality and in-ternal control mechanisms,” he said.

CEO of the Cape Town Society for the Blind(CTSB) in Salt River, while addressingwom-en at aWomen’sMonth event at the society’spremises.VanWyksaidblindpeople shouldn’t bede-

fined by their disability because they havemore to offer.Though themonth to celebratewomenhas

come and gone, CTSB has so much work todo. They are aiming to generate R20m overthe next two years to help visually impairedpeople to do different things, Van Wyk said.Part of the CTSB’s vision is to empower

themore than onemillion visually impairedpeople in South Africa to become recog-nised, tax-paying, high-performing achiev-ers andunlock their employment opportuni-ties. They believe that the money wouldopen doors for the many gifted visually im-paired people in the country.Helen Zille, premier of the Western Cape,

and Natalie Maimane, wife of national DAleader Mmusi Maimane, were amongst the260 guests who attended the event. JennyMorris, a celebrity chef and radio personali-ty, was the master of ceremonies.Van Wyk said: “The organisation is con-

Wheelbarrows full of plastic bottles,shreds of snipped or shaped plasticbags, and sand. Add some elbow

grease, and you have a school.Well, sort of.These were the “ingredients” used by

workers at the Metro Evangelical Servi-ces’s (MES) office in Bellville up to last Fri-day, to help a local church build a schoolin the missionary village of Greyton.Yvette Conradie of MES heard the Bell-

ville Presbyterian Church was planning tobuild a schoolusing entirely recycledmate-rial, so she offered the clients at MES’s of-fice an opportunity: Help make the ecobricks needed, and get a daily freemeal andcoffee out of the deal.“I just felt we needed to give the clients

something to do and to keep them out ofmischief, while helping others and the en-vironment. With this project, we were try-ing to educate themabout plastic disposal.”Yvette said the project ran for three

months.“The project was to be finished by Sep-

tember when the church will take all thebottles to Greyton – it’s a ‘nine-eleven’project,” she laughed.The bricks are made of two-litre plastic

bottles filled to the brimwith pieces of plas-tic waste and sometimes sand, which wereall pressed deeply into the bottle usingsticks.“You can find all sorts of information

about the bricks on the internet. It’s reallyinteresting how they put it all together.“But I have to say: It requires a lot of el-

bow grease to get the plastic in there andmake the bricks really strong, then to fillit with sand.”She said the workers brought the bottles

to the centre filled, using wheelbarrows.Then they continued working in a specialspace thatwas created for theproject on theMES grounds.“At first I had seven workers – everyone

was excited about putting the plastic intothe bottles. Then we had four, and I endedupwith a team of just twoworkers. It is un-derstandable, because it was really hard toget the plastic to fit and it hurt theirhands,” she said.The workers were rewarded daily with

a meal voucher for a free lunch and a cupof coffee when they returned the nextmorning to finish off the workday endingat 16:00.“I’m not sure howmany bricks were cre-

ated altogether, but I do know we tookmany black bags filled with bricks over tothe church...”

Becoming an artistwas a “no-brainer”for Eversdal’s Ruan Huisamen.“I’d be rubbish at almost anything

else,” says the 24-year-old, who is the onlyNorthern Suburbs artist to be chosen asa Top 40 finalist for this year’s prestigiousSanlam Portrait Awards.

His charcoal and pastel on paper pieceMandi will be on display at the Rust-en-Vrede Gallery in Durbanville with ano-ther top 40 portraits until Thursday 8 Oc-tober before finalists’ pieces go on touraround the country.Despite its incredible detail, Ruan says

Mandi was actually “a bit of a rush job”.He worked all night to finish the piece.“I finished this work four hours before

the competition closed.”His subject forMandi is Mindisa Ngqu-

lana, who works at a gallery in the CBD.Although he always knew he wanted to

be a professional artist, Ruan chose not tostudy art after matriculating from Durban-ville High School, as he feels the current ter-tiary environment creates “jacks of all tra-des, but masters of none.”

Instead he spent hours refining his skillson his own. “Fromayoung age I’ve had a ten-dency to try and create work as realisticallyor believable as possible.”This was something he realised while stu-

dying visual arts at school. He was only 17

when he took highest honours and the win-ner’s trophy at the Tygerberg Eisteddfod.The decision to pursue a career in art me-

ant not havingmuch of a social life for Ruan,who even spent his break times at school ho-ning his craft. Through the internet, he beca-me aware of artists as young as 13 who wereproducing brilliant work, and that pushedhim to practice.

His first foray into the professional art

world came in 2009whenhe entered thena-tional Sanlam Vuleka Art Competition.

From there he started working on com-missions, which afforded him the opportu-nity to further refine his technique.

Initially, Ruan worked mostly with gra-phite, but a chance meeting with artistLouis Jansen van Vuuren at an exhibitionin Stellenbosch put him on the road tocharcoal.

Louis invited him to be his apprenticein France for three months, and a shortwhile later he found himself on his way toChateau a Creuzette in Boussac.

Ruan describes the experience as “sur-real”. The two engaged in spirited debatesabout techniques and styles, but ultimate-ly Louis helped Ruan move from pencil tocharcoal, a medium he had been wary of.

“I thought it was an indomitable medi-um. It was powder; it was messy.”

With Louis’ guidance however, Ruanmastered the craft and his first charcoaldrawing, an A3 drawing of his mother’seye, was sold to a collector in London.His first portrait piece was a self-portrait

which won him a top 10 place in the AbsaL’Atelier competition. This year’s National Cupcake Day 4 Kidswith cancer will be held on 26 Septemberin excess of 70 shopping malls across thecountry.

Cupcakes 4 Kids with cancer is a non-profit company that raises awarenessabout the early warning signs of childhoodcancer and funds for children fighting thedisease.

Through their Cupcakes of Hope event,volunteers, sponsors and bakers sharetheir love for baking for this great cause,making these events the “sweetest way tosave a life”, says Liz van der Walt, one ofthe organisers.

This charity has been able to assist over300 patients and 15 other charities since itsinception and grows from year to year.

The money raised goes towards payingfor medical treatment, travelling costs,school fees, birthday celebrations and nor-mal day-to-day expenses for the children.

The organisation also conducts hospitalvisits with cupcakes for patients and staff.

“It is amazing to see how a little cupcakecan bring a huge smile to a child’s face.”

Sixteen local and regional malls will beparticipating this year out of a total of 70countrywide.

As the sun rises over Saudi Arabiandunes, so the lights in the tiny theatreslowly rise over the naked buttocks of

the actress facing away from the audience.The set is barren – bar a table, some news-

papers, buckets and a prison cell door. Atpoints the walls are decorated in Arabicscribbles.

There is blood on Lee-Ann Van Rooi’sdirty gown. The quiet in the tiny room is im-pregnated as the meaning of these stainsdawns.

The mood is set for Fleur du Cap winnerVan Rooi to tell – in unfaltering monologue– the dark and harrowing, yet utterly inspir-ing tale of Danalene Noach.

The play is an adaptation of Noach’s auto-biographical novel, in which the Cape Townnurse tells of her work and stay in SaudiArabia in the hopes of a better life for herselfand her family.

Noach’s candidness, her sass and honesty,coupled with her unerring ability to exposethe corruption within her place of employ,and her on the wrong side of the law.

She is victimised and eventually lockedupin a prison for political prisoners, but noteven the complete lack of contact with her

family, or being raped repeatedly, could dimNoach’s faith.

Van Rooi’s performance as the fire-brandNoach is spellbinding. She is honest and raw

in her portrayal, and she switches seamless-ly between her character’s emotions as theydip and swell while she remembers to keepthe faith.

At the end of the play, when the spell isfinally broken as the jail doors swing opento Van Rooi unexpectedly, and hope of free-dom finally dawns, one is left breathless andhaunted.

It is only in this, the aftermath of the har-rowing, but always lucid performance byVan Rooi, that the true depth of the tale shejust told, completely unfolds.

The consciousness whispers: This was astory of hope; of the sun rising again afterthe darkest night.

Van Rooi’s depiction of Noach’s ordealearns her a standing ovation.

Woman Alone premiered on 31 August atthe Baxter’s Golden Arrow theatre, after itsrun at Grahamstown’s National Arts Festi-val in July.

The play is directed by Christo Davids andproduced by Diaan Lawrenson and JodyAbrahams.

hat-trick of top 10 finishes in the ninth editi-on at Golf Club Bielle in Italy last week.

Riccardo Leo secured a fifth victory forItaly in the Reply Italian International u.16championship.

Loubser, from Boland, finished fourth onone-under-par 291, while Mayo, fromKwaZulu-Natal, andWestern Province’sFilippi tied for se-venth on 294.

Loubser, fromTheewaterskloof,carded rounds of74, 75, 69 and 73,Mayo, from MountEdgecombe, returnedrounds of 72, 74, 75 and73 and Filippi scored74, 76, 74 and 70.

This marks the firsttime that three SouthAfrican juniors finis-hed in the top 10 sincethe Italian Internatio-nal u.16 championshiplaunched in 2007.

“It really is a remarka-ble accomplishment,”said South African GolfAssociation golf integra-tion manager and teammanager, Eden Thomp-son.

“Haydn Porteous won this event in2008, Tristen Strydom tied for se-cond in 2011 and Haydn, YubinYung and Kyle McClatchie were

joint third in 2008, 2007 and 2013 respective-ly.

“Over the last eight years, we had fourpairs who finished in the top 10, but this isthe first time three of our juniors managedthis rare feat.”

Thompson said the trio were determinedto better their debut performances in 2014and delivered on their promise.

“Luca tied for 11th last year, but HermanandLukebothmissed the cut. They returnedwith great attitudes and a lot of resolve. Theguys all knuckled down in the final roundand tried to get everything from the course,even if at times to their own detriment.

“Herman, Luke, Luca and ourfourth player, Wilco Nienaber,

displayed fantastic camarade-rie and sportsmanship, andalthough Wilco missed the cut

in his first start here in Italy, hewas unwavering in his supportin the third round and even car-ried Herman’s bag in the final

round.“All four players represented
