RuthBerry, is one ofmanymade by support-ers ofMilo, a dog that was impounded by theAtlantis Animal Pound for biting and per-manently damaging a child’s hand.The child, Joline Janse vanRensburg,was

visiting a friend’s house and while waitingoutside the gate, their dog bit her hand fromthe inside of the palisade fence.Joline’s father, Rudolf, who was waiting

in his car, jumped out and he and Joline’sfriend screamed at the dog, a labrador andDalmation cross, who then let go of herhand.

Stitches“Joline did not make a sound. She just

turned to me, white as a ghost and said ‘lookwhat the dog did.’ Her hand was bleedingprofusely,” Rudolf says. He took her to theemergency unit at N1 City immediately,where she received 27 stitches.This happened almost three months ago,

but Joline is still in shock. Not only couldshenotwrite herGr 11 final exam, the injuryhas also left herwith anugly scar. Joline lostfeeling in part of her right hand ... as wellas all her friends.Joline has become a victim in a Facebook

public Facebook page of Kruvet AnimalHealth, owner of Milo, Sharné Jordaan, said“Ek sal daai etters sue wat my ‘kind’ weg-neem”.She also posted the cellphone number of

the law enforcement officer in charge of theimpoundment unit, email addresses ofHelen Zille and promised to get the cell-phone number of Joline’s father so that peo-ple can direct their anger to them in personin order to release Milo.

TraumaOn17December, someoneposted this com-

ment: “This 16-year-old girl must be pun-ished for causing poor Milo all the trauma& suffering!“If it wasn’t for her irresponsible actions

this would never have happened!”The Janse vanRensburg family did not re-

spond to any of these comments, but fol-lowed the Save Milo campaign on social me-dia and made copies of everything.In the process they came across two other

people who have been bitten by Milo in thepast and commentsmade by Jordaan on sev-eral occasions prior to this incident, askingadvice about her dog’s aggressive behav-iour.Angie Janse van Rensburg, Jolines’ moth-

er, says they do not want to make a decisionabout the life of the dog.“The lawmust take its course, but the fact

is our child is innocent. She is the one whogot bitten here.“We did not want to do it the media way,

Magdaleine Leo, ’n afgetrede onderwyseres van Kuilsrivier, hou haar deesdae besig met ’n projekwaarin sy produkte vervaardig waarmee ’n mens ’n huis kan versier. Magdaleine het gesê die doelvan haar projek is om werkloses te wys dat hulle geld kan verdien net deur hul hande te gebruik.

Die Epikaezo International Ministries-kerk naby die Kuilsrivier-treinstasie is by-na ’n jaar gelede op die been gebring om ha-weloses te bedien met beide die Woord en’n warm bord kos.

Borde kos en koeldrank word elke Son-dag ná die diens aan hulle uitgedeel.

Verlede Sondag het sowat 100 hawelosesdie diens vanaf 10:00 bygewoon.

Roger Booysen, ’n stigterslid, het gesê diekerk is op 24 Februarie verlede jaar geopen.

“Ons het eers Saterdagaande vir hullekos op straat gebring, toe besluit ons omhulle te voed met die Woord, en nie net metkos nie,” het Booysen gesê.

Die kerk is tans in ’n vraghouer.Volgens Booysen het hulle die kerk uit

“Toe merk ons op daar is ’n groter nood.Ons het toe na verskeie gebiede gegaan omdie mense te voed,” het sy gesê.

Roger het gesê: “Elke week sit jy met ver-skillende mense wat kom – die getalle wordnet meer en meer en op die oomblik raakdie plek te klein waar ons nou is.”

Roger het gesê die groot probleem inKuilsrivier is die tekort aan nagskuilingsin die gebied.

“Ons mikpunt vanjaar is om ’n nagskui-ling in die gebied op te rig.”

Hy het gesê hulle mik ook na ’n gebouwaar hulle die haweloses kan bedien.

“Vorentoe beplan ons om mans en vroueop te lei om self die diens oor te neem. Onswil daarna na ander gebiede uitbrei,” hetRoger gesê.

Die kerk deel ook gereeld klere aan hawe-lose mans, vroue en kinders uit.

GS: Dit is nog altyd vir my ’n groot voorregwanneer mense my as kunstenaar en mymusiek ondersteun en ek sal altyd grootwaardering daarvoor hê.

TB: Wat is jou planne vir 2014?GS: Ons is besig met ’n nuwe duetalbum

waarin ’n nuwe kunstenaar bekend gestelword.

TB: Wat sou jy sê was jou grootste treffertot nou toe en gaan jy dit sing by die leserskon-sert?

GS: Dit is moeilik om een uit te sonder. Ba-by Tjoklits was my deurbraak-liedjie en saldus altyd na aan my hart bly, en vandag sesjaar later, word hy nog op elke optrede deurdie gehoor versoek. Die geheim lê daarin omop elke album treffers te skryf soos Diaman-te vir Jou, Rooi Roos, Jy’s my Hartklop, Brooden Melk, maar ek strewe ook om tydlose lied-jies te skryf en dit is liedjies wat konstantgroei en deur die mense by my optredes ver-soek word, soos Sexy Jeans, Als begin eersNou, Stealing Stars en Pennies en Ponde. Ver-seker gaan die gehoor die treffers en ook vandie gunstelinge hoor.

TB: Waar is jou gunsteling-venue en watdink jy van die Liqui-Fruit-amfiteater in diePaarl?

GS: Elke venue is uniek op sy eie manier,maar as ek een moet uitsonder is dit die Inni-bos-hoofverhoog in Mbombela (Nelspruit).Ek het nog nie by die Liqui-Fruit-amfiteaterin die Paarl opgetree nie. Dit is my eerstekeer by hierdie venue en ek sien baie uit. Ekgaan rock.

TB: Wat sal jy sê is die hoogtepunt van jouloopbaan tot dusver en hoekom?

Nearly two years ago she was diagnosedwith Guillain-Barré syndrome – a diseasethat affects one’s peripheral nervous sys-tem. Since her diagnosis she has been wheel-chair bound. Her dream for 2014 is to walk,“at least on crutches”.

Brooke Kleinsmith (14), from Highbury inKuils River said despite the lack of properphysiotherapy her body has shown somesigns of improvement.

“These days the pain comes and go. At thebeginning she experienced excruciatingpain,” her mother, Roslyn, said.

Brooke said: “I was paralysed. I could notmove. It was very painful. I also experienceda lot of sleepless nights.”

Since then she has recovered significant-ly.

“She can move her leg, but it’s still toopainful to stand and walk.

“She can transfer herself into and out ofa vehicle, as well as into her bed...somethingshe could not do a year ago,” her mother ex-plained.

Brooke, a Gr 9 pupil, is currently complet-ing her final year at the Paarl Special Schoolin Brackenfell and hopes to get a spot at Jan

Kriel High in 2015 where she will be able tofinish her schooling.

“When she got sick, she was still in prima-ry school. She needed to be placed in a spe-cial school.

“Our options were between Jan Kriel andPaarl School, but Jan Kriel High was alreadyfull,” the mother, a contracts administrator,said.

Roslyn explained that her daughter hadbeen getting fewer physiotherapy traininghours than before due to the number oflearners who require this treatment at herschool. A lady from Johannesburg, accord-ing to her, has offered to sponsor Brookewith more physiotherapy classes.

“We believe that if she had been receivingher treatment at the rehab she would havebeen better by now.

“If she had been receiving the one-on-onetreatment she could have been walking oncrutches, maybe even walking by now,” themother said.

“She got the highest marks in class forEnglish higher grade last year.”

Brooke has also been appointed as one ofthe school’s prefects.

The teenager said she is hopeful about afurther positive improvement. “My goal isto start walking by the end of this year.”

The language policy regarding official docu-mentation at a primary school in Kraaifon-tein has left several parents in the dark, lit-erally.According to one of these Xhosa-speaking

parents, who wishes to remain anonymous,Watsonia Primary School in Scottsdene, is-sues all its circular letters to parents exclu-sively in Afrikaans.“Even the stationery lists were in Afri-

kaans only and we had to ask friendly shop-pers at the stationery shop to translate thelist for us,” this father said.He says he has requested the principal on

several occasions to send out letters in bothAfrikaans and English, all to no avail.“It’s frustrating, not to mention grossly

unfair, for us as parents who wish to be ac-tively involved in our child’s school career,”

Cape Minister of Education, confirmed thatWatsonia Primary is a parallel mediumschool, which means that they have classesin both Afrikaans and English.“The policy of the Western Cape Educa-

Facebook, offering free gift cards fromWoolworths and Pick n Pay.Dial aNerd, a local ITmanagement servi-

ce provider, have listed three of the biggestscams, which will help you stay ahead ofthe scammers and allow you to enjoy youronline experience with peace of mind.The easiest way to be targeted is via an

email, text or Facebook post, offering a gre-at deal. “Generally, don’t click on a linkfrom someone you don’t know as it couldbe spyware or a malicious program desig-ned to capture passwords and other perso-nal information,” warns Leaine Brebber,head of communications at Dial a Nerd.If you didn’t remember entering a com-

petition or ordering a package, it is proba-bly a scam. If the deal is too amazing to betrue, it’s probably a scam. Such as the “Geta Free R500 Woolworths or Pick n Pay GiftCard by sharing the link on your Facebookpage” scam.“Always check the source of the link –

even if it’s from someone you know. Ascammer could have hijacked their ac-count and sent it on their behalf,” she says.Phony gift card offers come in the form

of an email, text message or Facebook postsaying that you’ve won a prize or thatyou’ve qualified for a massive discount orsum of money on a gift card. You are thenrequired to enter extensive personal infor-mation in order to receive it or share thelink to your friends.“Don’t do it! The more personal informa-

tion they have, the easier it will be to getinto your bank account, for example.“Ignore links offering ridiculous dis-

counts and steer clear of sites that offer giftcards at unheard of prices,” she continues.“About unknown sites advertising unbe-

lievable offers: You know the saying, “if itsounds too good to be true, it probably is”?This is the general rule when it comes toscams.”Some sites do offer amazing deals, like

Groupon and Superbalist (Citymob), butit’s the unknown sites that you need towatch out for. The ones with strangelyspelt names or the ones offering highlysought after items like iPads and iPhonesat abnormally low prices.Be very wary when entering your credit

card details onto unknown sites and makesure that the site is secure: The web ad-dress should begin with https:// instead ofhttp://. The “s”means that it is secure. “Werecommend using a separate card for onli-ne purchases and setting your limits as lowas possible, so that if your details are sto-len, the damage will be minimal. It’s alsoadvisable not to save any of your creditcard details on a site for future purchases,”Leaine advises.Dubious websites can also pull you in by

offering vouchers for popular gifts. If youhave to enter a lot of personal informationto get the voucher, the warning bells in yo-ur head should start to sound.If you are required to sign up to the ac-

count to purchase, using a password youhaven’t used for anything else, is a goodidea.

V If you think you’ve been involved in anonline scam, immediately run a virus scan.Mobile phones and tablets aren’t immuneto scamware, so this applies to all devices.“We recommend using ESET NOD32 fordesktop and mobile security.”

V Change your password if you think youhave been scammed on a social media site.

V Call your credit card company rightaway – they will put a watch on your cardfor suspicious activity.“To recap, stick to the well-known sites,

don’t click on any links from unfamiliarsources and don’t be tricked into giving upextensive personal information to get agood dea,” Leaine concludes.

Despite a learning disability one learnerfrom De Kuilen High School in Kuils Rivermanaged to achieve two distinctions.Caswall Engelsman (18), received 82 % for

geography and 80 % for Information Tech-nology (IT).He alsomanaged to achieve 76 %in mathematics.“I did not expect to do well in IT. I actually

wanted to do better in mathematics, at leasta distinction,” Caswall said.Caswall developed a reading and writing

disability in his early childhood years buthasmanaged to achieved goodmarks thanksto the help of his parents and school teach-ers.As a result of his disability his final exam

had to be transcribed.His mother, Kaylene, said the school and

a social worker who had introduced thetranscription programme two years ago hadhelped her son a lot.Caswall had been writing several of his

tests and examinations by means of tran-scribing.“Caswall’s problem has been coming a

long way. He is slow in reading and writing.The school helped him,” his proud mother,Kaylene, said.Caswall said: “It was difficult at first. It

was easy if the person you had to talk to wasa nice person.“Often when I wrote the exams, my mind

would wonder. However with the transcrib-ing I had to learn to focus more on the an-swers.”Most of his examination papers were tran-

scribed exceptmathematics, IT and account-ing.“It’s mostly the theory papers that needed

transcription.”His mother was diagnosed with an in-

flamed colon in 2013 which was another ma-jor setback for the teenager.“I was bed-ridden for a long time. I could

see that it had an impact onhis schoolwork,”Kaylene said.Caswall has registered to study a BSc de-

gree in computer science at the Universityof the Western Cape (UWC).His fellow student Leletu August (19) from

Blue Downs, has also registered at UWC.

Leletu achieved two distinctions; 87 % fordramatic arts and 82 % for life orientation.“I was hoping for three distinctions. I at

least got 77 % for history,” she said.Leletu struggled often to be on time for her

exams as she had tomakeuse of public trans-port.She said on the morning of her history pa-

per she was dropped off late.“That morning I was also told that my

cousin, who is like a brother to me, gotstabbed. It was hard. He had to be admittedto ICU,” she said.Her cousin survived the attack.Leletu wants to study BCom accounting.

The rough and tumble of life is all part of adays work for Muhidinsalum “Muhidin”Adla.During the week and weekends he per-

forms as an acrobat. His dream however isto someday start his very own circus school.Despite not having a fixed income Adla

(27), a professional acrobat who is originallyfromDarEs Salaam inTanzania says hewillcontinue to perform as a street artist andteach children in the impoverishedWesbank to realise this life-long dream.Apart from owning a school he also

dreams about one day performing for theworld famous Cirque du Soleil. “Inmy heartI dream about Cirque du Soleil,” he said.Adla is currently part of the group called

Mambo Jambo. He often trains with his fourfriends at the Multi Purpose Centre inWesbank and performs during the week andover the weekends in Sea Point, Camps Bayand the V&A Waterfront.Muhidin trained as an acrobat since the

age of seven.He immigrated to South Africa five years

ago.“I came to South Africa to work. I only

work as an acrobat and have been doing sofor many years now,” he said.Muhidin has over the years also worked

for an international German circus produc-tion called Africa! Africa! and receivedtraining in China where he stayed for an en-tire year.“I started working for Africa! Africa! at

age 16 years. They saw me perform in thestreets,” he said.Muhidin started performing in the streets

of Tanzania to earn money for his parents.“My mother was unemployed and my fa-

ther used to sell clothes.”Muhidin started Mambo Jambo in 2013

with four friends. The group practises onMondays and Tuesdays at the Multi Pur-pose Centre in Wesbank. Muhudin alsotrains little children in the area withoutreceiving payment.

“The training is a lot of hardwork.We prac-tise a lot.We lookon the internet fornew ideas,but often also come upwith our own,” he said.The most difficult trick to perform, he says,

is standing on someone’s head balancing hisbody with only one hand.

“It took me two years before I was able todo that.Often when I train I always say ‘nopain no gain’,” he said.Muhidin and his group earn between

R1 000 andR5 000 a day. “Sometimeswe onlyearn R300, sometimes nothing,” he said.

No pain no gain for acrobat

Aprobe was recently launched intosmall but irregular deductions madefrom pensioners who drew their old

age grants at Pick n Pay pay points in De-cember.This paypoint service was made availa-

ble to all social grant beneficiaries in Aprillast year, by means of their Sassa cards,which means they avoid standing in longqueues for hours at Sassa paypoints eachmonth.During December several pensioners in

the Brackenfell/Kraaifontein area werecharged additional fees ranging in amountbetween R2 and R10, when withdrawingtheir pensions at Pick n Pay in Cape Gate.According to statistical reports for 2013,

2.8 million people receive social grants inthe Western Cape alone. Of this, 258 759 areold age grants.

Investigation“This is the first time a fee was charged,

before it was free.“Andwhywas the fee not the same across

the board? Pick n Pay had a notice up thatall Sassa transactions were free and nowthey are charging!” said one of the pension-ers* TygerBurger spoke to.When this particular pensioner contact-

ed the Sassa call centre, she was advised bya consultant that the matter was under in-vestigation.On enquiry, Jonathan Ackerman, direc-

tor of customer services at Pick n Pay, con-firmed that the store does not charge anyfee for the withdrawal of Sassa grant pay-ments.“We have consulted with Sassa and it ap-

pears that some Sassa transactions mayhave incurred transaction fees... Pick nPay

considers the payment of social grants asa service to our communities and does notprofit from it at all,” he told TygerBurger.He referred customers who found they

have been charged a transaction fee to theSassa call centre.Shivani Wahab, spokesperson for Sassa

also confirmed that there should be notransaction fees charged when beneficiar-ies access their social grants via approvedmerchants such as Pick n Pay.“Transaction fees apply only in the case

of ATMwithdrawals, where standard ATMrates apply,” she said.“We will have to take the matter up with

CPS (Cash Paymaster Services) who is con-tracted to Sassa for the payment of socialgrants, for further investigation.”

RefundsIt is not certain yet what the outcome of

this investigation is, but TygerBurgercould establish that no additional deduc-tions were made from the pensioners inquestion during January.The deductions made in December how-

ever, were not refunded, according to oneof the pensioners.“According to a Sassa consultant the

money is still on my account but the Pickn Pay system shows nothing,” she com-plained on Monday.CPS is a business unit of global company

NET1,whoprovides payment solutions andtransaction processing services across sev-eral industries.It is further stated that the company de-

From testing the waters to jumping in,singer/songwriter, Daniel Crossing iscelebrating his first new year as a full-

time artist.With a string of interviews and songs be-

ing playlisted on local radio stations, DanielCrossing is hard at work promoting his mu-sic.“The last album that I wrote is a rock al-

bum,” Daniel explains, referring to his sev-en trackalbum,BetweenBorders andAngels.He prefers to describe his music as soul

rock though. “More soulful than anythingelse,” he adds.“Lyrics are very important to me and it’s

about expressing themeaning of those lyricsto the person listening,” Daniel says of hismusic.“I think the most significant event in my

life was when I was 13 and I wanted to writea song,” he jokes, but that’s unofficiallywhere Daniel’s musical journey began.He goes on to explain that he was trying

to write the song with his cousins and real-ised he couldn’t write a song.Officially, he was attending an opera con-

cert at City Hall and while listening to thesingers, he thought to himself: “I want to dothat.”“Since that day I took music lessons and

I started singing everywhere I could,” Dan-iel says.

Own workHe started out singing in musicals, an op-

era society and choirs, always singing otherpeople’s songs.“At some point I just got to this point

where I said: ‘Hey, but what about your ownstuff’,” Daniel explains, adding: “Aboutthree years ago I said: ‘Okay, let’s start a newjourney’.”He was standing in a music shop one day

and saw the CD of a fellow musical actor,which is where Daniel decided: “If he can doit, so can I.”As he was driving home a song came into

his mind and that was how Daniel eventual-ly did start writing his own music.It was also his long walks to work while

working in a restaurant which gave himtime to think and process and Daniel saysthat’s where his lyrics were born.

StoriesDaniel says the songs he recorded for Be-

tween Borders and Angels tell a story. “Eachsong tells a specific story and then togetherthey tell the story of starting out on thewrong side of the line, if you want to call itthat, and thenmovingover to the right side,”he explains.Daniel adds that while the album’s songs

are rock-based, there are also touches of reg-

gae rock and adult contemporary. “I tried toplay around with the sound a little bit,” hesays.

The achievements of Charlaine CoetzeeHirst are nothing short of remarkable,hence her induction into the Women’s

Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) PlayersHall of Fame.Charlaine (40), who hails from Durban-

ville, was inducted into the Hall of Fame on10 December in Las Vegas, Nevada.It all startedwayback in 1978,whereChar-

laine, then a mere five years old, startedswinging clubs at theDurbanville Golf Club.

Durbanville“I started playing golf when I was 5 years

old. My dad was an avid golfer and I got totag along toDurbanvilleGolf Clubwheneverhe would play. I used to take him on at chip-ping and putting contests all the time.“I have such incrediblememories of grow-

ing up playing golf at Durbanville and play-ing with the ladies’ section there. I won theLadies Club Championship twice.“My mentor was Hylda Hamilton, who

took me under her wing. I was a WesternProvince provincial representative as a jun-ior and I also captained the Fairmont HighSchool golf team,”Charlaine reflected on thegood old days. She alsowon thePrenticeCupfor u-21 females in WP.After her high school career she packed

her bags for the USA to pursue her dreamof playing professional golf.“I managed to get a college scholarship to

Longwood College in Virginia and that iswhere my “career” began. I had a great col-lege playing career – I won the NationalChampionship for Division II schools 3times while at college and in my senior year1995 I won three major awards – VirginiaWomen Athlete of the Year, Honda Awardfor Division II Athlete of the year and To-day’s Top Eight Award (highest honour thatthe NCAA awards to college athletes),” saidCharlaine.

after a dream amateur career, turning pro-fessional in 1996 and playing on the tour fornine years.She won the LPGA T&CP Southeast Sec-

of Robben Island by providing an authen-tic cultural experience. Athletes and spec-tators will be given the opportunity tospend the night on the island in Robben Is-land Prison, where they will receive a tourby a prison warden and talk by an ex-pris-oner about some of the freedom fightersthat it housed.In addition to this athletes will also be

able to witness the island in all its scenicbeauty through the swim, run and cyclestages of the event itself.The triathlon will consist of a morning

sprint distance of a 400 m swim, 14 km cy-cle and 4 km run with the afternoon raceconsisting of an 800 m swim, 27 km cycleand 8 km run.There will also be an additional running
