Mensehandel is ’n probleem wat al er-ger raak en mits die publiek nie huldeel doen nie, gaan dit net verder uit-

kring.Dís die waarskuwing wat die Kuilsrivier-

polisie gee na aanleiding van die groot aan-tal kinders wat kwaad doen op die dorp sestrate en wat by dié euwel betrek word.Kapt. Isaac van Niekerk, polisiewoord-

voerder, sê kinders wat dwelms verkoop,snags as sekswerkers bedrywig is en opstraathoeke staan enbedel,word ookbeskouas mensehandel.

“Hier is jong kinders in die gebied watskool vroeg verlaat en op strate werk. Dieseuns word deur volwassenes gebruik omdwelms te verkoop, en die meisies of vroueom hul liggame te verkoop.“Die geld wat gemaak word, word oorhan-

dig aan iemand anders. Dis ook ’n vorm vanmensehandel.“Mensehandel is nie net ’n gevalwaar kin-

ders of volwassenes ontvoer word en na ’nander stad of land geneem word nie.“Die geldelike uitbuiting van kinders is

ook mensehandel,” sê Van Niekerk.Behalwe vir die verkoop van dwelms en

prostitusie is die jong seuns wat bedel, nogso ’n voorbeeld.

“Die seuns word gebruik om by verkeers-ligte te staanenbedel vir geld.Teendie eindevan die dag moet hulle dit aan volwassenesoorhandig.“Die polisiewil die publiekhiervanbewus

maak en aanmoedig om nie geld aan hullete gee nie, maar eerder vir hulle iets gee omte eet,” sê Van Niekerk. Hy sê deur geld teskenk vererger ’n mens die probleem.“Deur geld te gee maak ’n mens die mis-

daad net groter en groter,” sê Van Niekerk.In dieselfde asem waarsku hy ook dat die

publiek nie goedkoop items teen die pad bykinders moet koop nie.“Ons wil mense bewus maak daarvan.

Hulle word ingeloop deur bargains te koop

op strate – goed wat waarskynlik elders ge-steel is.“Die goedkoop items is iemand anders se

hartseer. Baie van die goed te koop op straat,is waarskynlik gesteel en moontlik is daarook mense seergemaak of vermoor om dit tebekom.“Jy sal nie wil hê dat dit met jou gebeur

nie, so koop jou goed eerder by ’n ge-registreerde handelaar,” sê Van Niekerk.Hy meen deur gesteelde items op straat

teen ’n appel en ’n ei te koop, help ’n mensnet om die misdaad te laat uitkring.“Die persoon gaan dit net môre weer doen

– dit êrens gaan steel en dit op die straat komverkoop,” waarsku Van Niekerk.

’n Ervare slangvanger wat onlangsdeur ’n Kaapse kobra gepik is, sêhy herstel goed ná die voorval.

Ao. Doep du Plessis, lid van die Mfule-ni-polisiekantoor, is op 23 Januarie deurdie slang gepik terwyl hy besig was omdit te verwyder.

Doep vang al vir meer as drie dekadesslange.

Hy is ná sy aanval by die Netcare 911Kuilsrivier-hospitaal opgeneem en be-handel voordat hy weer ontslaan is.

“Dit gaan goed, ek moet net vandagweer ingaan hospitaal toe om na my vin-ger te laat kyk,” het hy gister aan Tyger-Burger vertel.

“Ek is deur die hel, maar het daardeurgekom. Nou moet ek die hel afskud.

“Dis nie ’n grap om deur ’n kobra gebytte word nie,” vertel hy.

Doep sê andersins het sy liggaam vol-kome herstel.

“Dis net die bytplek wat nog moet her-stel. Verder is ek reg en gesond. Ek raaknog net vinnig moeg.

“Ek moes van vooraf leer loop en myhande en vingers leer beweeg.

“Dis nie so maklik soos ’n mens wil hênie,” sê hy.

Hy sê ’n slangbyt is ’n ernstige affêre.“’n Mens is eintlik dankbaar vir alles

wat jy het en kry ná so ’n ervaring,” sêDoep.

Vuurwapeneienaars moet liefs sorg dat hulwapens veilig gebêre word en sodoende ver-hoed dat dit in verkeerde hande beland.

Dít is die pleidooi van die Kuilsrivier-po-lisie, wat gereeld gelisensieerde vuurwa-pens in misdadigers se besit kry.

Kapt. Isaac vanNiekerk, polisie-woordvoerder, sêdie wapens wordgewoonlik tydenshuisbrake uit ’nkluis gesteel endeur misdadigersgebruik om hulmisdrywe tepleeg. “Baie vandie wapens watons terugkry, isgelisensieerd.

“Die grootmeerderheidmense wat aan-soek doen om ’nwapenlisensie,doen dit om hul-self en hul gesinne te beskerm.

“Maak net seker die wapens word veiliggebêre,” sê Van Niekerk.

Wapeneienaars word ook aangemoedigom hul eiendom uit die kluis te verwyderwanneer hulle vir lang tye van die huis afweggaan. “Soms word die gesteelde wapensgebruik om misdade te pleeg, om mense teberoof en partykeer word moorde gepleeg.”

Van Niekerk moedig ook mense aan omhul gesteelde wapens by die polisie aan temeld. “Ons het al ’n geval gehad waar kin-ders met vuurwapens betrap is. Mense moetasseblief versigtiger wees met hul wapensen die kluise waarin hulle dit bêre.”

Hy stel voor dat mense die sleutels veiligbewaar sodat kinders nie daarby kan uit-kom nie.”

Die ma’s van kinders wat mishandel wordmoet daaroor praat, pleks om stil te bly ensodoende die mishandelaar te beskerm.

Dis die versoek van die Kuilsrivier-poli-sie wat al verskeie kere sulke gevalle teëge-kom het.

Kinders, veral jong meisies, word gereelddeur hul stiefpa’s aangerand of mishandelen die ma’s van sulke kinders kies eerderom stil te bly. Hulle wil eerder die pa be-skerm, sê kapt. Isaac van Niekerk, polisie-woordvoerder. Hy moedig vroue aan omeerder hul kinders te beskerm.

“Dit is so dat vroue en kinders groten-deels die teiken is wanneer dit kom by ge-weldsmisdade.

“Ons kry egter baie gevalle waar die pa’s,wat nie die biologiese ouer is nie, kindersmolesteer en die ma dan die man beskerm.Dis nie reg teenoor die kind nie.”

Hy sê soms voel kinders verantwoordelikvir wat met hulle gebeur. Hy sê ook dit ismoeilik om hulle te oortuig om vir die poli-sie inligting oor die mishandeling te gee.

“Hulle voel partymaal hulle is verkeerden dat dit hulle skuld is. Dis egter belangrikdat hulle praat, hetsy met die polisie, ’n on-derwyserof ’n familielidwathulle vertrou,”sê Van Niekerk.

Ma’s moet kinders beskerm


Is jy ’n betroubare informant? En het jy in-ligting wat kan lei tot die arrestasie en skul-digbevinding van ’n misdadiger?

Indien dit die geval is, vra die polisie jouhulp. Volgens kapt. Isaac van Niekerk,woordvoerder by die Kuilsrivier-polisie-kantoor, is inligting wat deur informanteaan hulle verskaf word oor misdadigers enhul doen en late, uiters noodsaaklik.

Boonop is daar ook ’n geldelike beloningvir diegene wat help. “Die informant en in-ligting wat hy of sy verskaf, word op ’n ui-

ters vertroulike wyse hanteer. As die inlig-ting lei tot ’n arrestasie en skuldigbevin-ding, word ’n beloning aan die informantgegee,” sê Van Niekerk.

Die minister van polisie stel jaarliks mil-joene rande beskikbaar vir dié doel.

“Die geld word gebruik om inligting in tewin en om informante te beloon,” sê VanNiekerk.

“Dis belangrik dat mense weet dat wan-neer hulle inligting aan die polisie verskaf,hul identiteit anoniem bly.

“Ons vra dat mense ons help en kontakindien hulle waardevolle inligting het,” sêVan Niekerk.

’n See van blou en wit het die skool-kleure van die Laerskool Excelsiorin Bellville net soveel helderder laat

uitstaan toe dié skool die honderde kannewater wat sy leerders vir boere ingesamelhet, verlede Woensdag op sy voorstoep uit-stal.

Met TygerBurger se besoek het die skoolse gr. 6M-klas dié kosbare vloeistof in diehelderblou bottels uitgedra en reggesit vir’n foto, en toe later weer twee-twee en vier-vier terug ingedra – met die rooi hale nogso oor hul hande van al die harde, maar trot-se werk.

Hulle is die klassie van Marian Hayes, ’njuffrou wat haar nering as leerkrag al virlanger as drie dekades aan dié skool beoe-fen, en wat die hele projek gekoördineerhet.

Die skoolhoof, Hendrik Botha, loof Hayesen die leerders vir die poging.

“Die groot doel van die projek was om dieleerders te leer om vir ander om te gee,” sê

hy.En hy mág maar trots wees: Die hele skool

het aan die projek deelgeneem en sowat 900bottels water is ingesamel.

People illegally dumping waste or rub-ble might face a tougher penalty forbreaking the law.

This warning follows a possible changein the waste by-law – a change that mightsoonallow for stricter punishment, theCityof Cape Town said

Last week the City said in a bid tostrengthen its arsenal against illegal dump-ing, which costs ratepayers millions ofrands every year, the mayoral committeehas proposed an amendment to the inte-grated waste management by-law – achange that would allow for the impound-ment of vehicles used in illegal dumping.

The change in the by-law will soon allowfor the City’s law enforcement agencies toseize, without a warrant, a vehicle that issuspected of or is on reasonable groundsbe-lieved to be involved with illegal dumping,Ernest Sonnenberg, Mayco member forutility services, said.

The amendment to the by-lawwas recent-ly approved by the mayoral committee.

Should the full council approve theamendment, it will pave the way for itspromulgation, the City explains.

The seized and impounded vehicle willonly be released if a criminal charge is notlaid or no fine is issued within 48 hours ofits seizure, if the criminal charges againstthe individual have been withdrawn or ifthey have been acquitted of the charged of-fence. The courtmay thendeclare that sucha vehicle be forfeited to the state, provided

that this would not affect the rights of anyperson to the vehicle, they explain.

Individuals foundguilty ofusing their ve-hicle for illegal dumping, with that vehiclehaving been seized and impounded, willneed to pay a tariff for its release, the valueof which will increase for the first three of-fences, the City said.

A guilty partywill have to fork out R7 500to have their vehicle released for the firstoffence, R10 000 for the second and R15 000for the third. Each subsequent impound-ment fee will have a value of R15 000.

“TheCity spends aroundR350mannuallyin its efforts to keep pace with the volumesof illegally dumped waste that appearacross Cape Town.

“It is essential that the City is affordedthe channels and support necessary in or-der to address this ongoing damage to ourenvironmental health and unacceptabledrain on our funds. Illegal dumpers acrossthe city are collectively playing their partin depriving communities of services andinfrastructure that could be put in placewith that amount of money, such as sportsfacilities or social welfare programmes. In-stead, those funds are used to clean up aftera few selfish residents,” Sonnenberg said.

Primary schools are invited to become partof the biggest soccer tournament in theworld for children between 10 and 12 yearsby entering this year’s Danone Nations Cup.

Over 1500 schools register to participate inthe tournament each year.

The first prize is a trip to participate inthe world finals with 31 other countries.

The closing date for registration is 1March. Games will begin at cluster level im-mediately after this.

The winners will progress to the regionalfinals, culminating in nine provincial win-ners playing in the national finals.

“Through the Danone Nations Cup we arereaching kids at a crucial age,” says ChantelEhlers, spokesperson of Danone.

Call for schoolsoccer entries

Following the highly successful inauguralLet’s Play schools physical education chal-lenge event last year, involving 403 000 pu-pils from 473 primary schools, SuperSportrelaunched the event on Monday.

The Challenge is a nationwide fitness com-petition for Grade 4 pupils.

The primary objective of the Challenge isto reinforce curriculum-oriented physicaleducation and to promote physical activityin all schools.

Let’s Play coaching teams will target vari-ous schools to run the Challenge. The fittestGrade 4 pupils from each school will com-pete against other schools, after which thetop three schools in each province will quali-fy for the provincial semi-final, leading to an

overall provincial winner.The final will take place at the end of Octo-

ber.The obstacle course challenge is designed

for both boys and girls and will be standard-ised at every school. It includes soccer sla-lom dribble, catch and throw, mini hurdles,rope pull and an agility drill, all of which arecompleted in a matter of minutes.

While activity is the central focus of thechallenge, it will also draw attention to thesocial issue of bullying. UFC athlete andLet’s Play ambassador Garreth “Soldier-boy” McLellan, as well as other sports per-sonalities, will make appearances at schoolsto address the issue.

“We believe that this is a meaningful way

to get schools involved in physical activity,particularly as government has highlightedthe need for children to become more ac-tive,” says Vaughn Bishop, head of Let’sPlay. “Kids need not be superstars; the chal-lenge is designed to accommodate everyoneat primary school level.”

The fittest primary school in each prov-ince will compete for the national title andthe prize of a R1.3m all-purpose, all-weathermulti-use sport court to be built at the win-ning school.

Die einde is nie in sig vir Wimpie Ac-kermann (48) nie met ’n rekord van 24agtereenvolgende Trans Agulhas-uit-

daagbootvaarte agter sy naam.Wimpie, van Bellville, het al 14 keer sy

klas gewen en slegs twee keer nie die podi-um gehaal nie.

Niemand anders het die afgelope 28 jaaraan soveel vaarte deelgeneem soos dié ge-soute jaer nie.

Dit lyk egter na ’n uitgemaakte saak dathy en sy spanmaat, Whitey Louw, in Desem-ber weer gaan deelneem.

Die Trans Agulhas vind elke jaar van 28Desember tot 1 Januarie plaas. Daar wordongeveer 700 km oor vyf dae afgelê.

“Dag een begin by Plettenbergbaai. Onsjaag dan 189 km en stop by nege strandewaar daar om ’n vlag gehardloop word voor-dat daar in Mosselbaai klaargemaak word.

“Dag twee is 86 km tot in Stilbaai. Dagdrie strek oor 161 km tot in Struisbaai. Dagvier is 111 km tot in Gansbaai en die vyfdedag nog vir oulaas 131 km tot in die Strand.

“Daar word op elke skof by verskillendestrande aangedoen en elke middag word ’nbranderkompetisie aangebied om die toe-skouers te vermaak en die borge ekstrablootstelling te gee.”

Wimpie se hoogtepunt tot dusver is toe hyvan sy 21ste Trans Agulhas die algehelewenner was en in baie slegte weersomstan-dighede eerste in die Strand aangekom het.

“Jy moet vir vyf dae kan konsentreer omso hard as moontlik en foutloos te ry. Som-tyds moet daar vinnige besluite gemaakword om miskien vir ’n baie groot branderom te draai en dan help ondervinding baie.

“Die span op die water en die ondersteu-ningspan moet ’n goeie verhouding hê envir vyf dae eenhonderd persent gemoti-veerd bly,” verduidelik Wimpie.

Wimpie raai persone wat die sport wil be-oefen aan om eers aan te klop vir raad bybestaande deelnemers en om eers na ’ntweedehandse boot en enjin te kyk.

As die gogga behoorlik gebyt het, kandaar na nuwe toerusting gekyk word, isWimpie se wyse raad.
