Now that summer is upon us, drive cautiously for children inthe area. Pershing Elementary School is serving three meals a day, every weekday this summer and the playground is going to be verybusy.

Did you know?1. All dogs AND cats in Milwaukee County need to be li-

censed each year. Animal licenses expire on December 31 of eachyear and must be renewed by April 1 of the next year to prevent alate fee!2. All animals are required to have fresh food once a day

and constant access to water per West Milwaukee ordinance.3. Animals “at large” are considered animals off the prop-

erty of the owner. If an animal is not on a leash when off ownerproperty, including cats, it can be picked up for being “at large”and brought to Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Com-mission, our animal control facility, where fees will need to be paidbefore an animal can be returned to their owner. We planted the garden around the Centennial Clock area with

different plants and various color flowers. I would like to thankRosie Lemmerman for helping us plant the garden as well as vol-unteering to help with tending to the garden throughout the sum-mer. I received very nice comments about the appearance of area.We have a lot going on in the Village this summer. The Village

Board decided this year we will start the street renovation proj-ects; the first half of the season phase one will be the North end of53rd Street, all of 55th Street from West Burnham Street to WestMitchell Street along with changes at Miller Park Way at West Lin-coln Avenue and Miller Park Way at West Greenfield Avenue. Thesecond half of the season, phase two will be 55th Street from WestLapham Street to West Greenfield Avenue, 54th Street from WestBurnham Street to West Lapham Street, the south end of South53rd Street to West Beloit Road and 50th Street from West Green-field Avenue to West National Avenue. Thank you for your pa-tience during these projects. The new construction in the Village is a SUDZ car wash on

Miller Park Way at West Lincoln Ave; an O’Reilly Auto Partsstore on 40th and West Greenfield Avenue and a new commercialretail building on the northeast corner of Miller Park Way at WestGreenfield Avenue. After repeated requests for volunteers and interested citizens to

participate in rejuvenating the Historical Society, there has been noresponse. So for now it is on a hiatus meaning that perhaps some-time in the near future with enough participation it can start upagain.Have a safe and exciting summerRonald Hayward

VILLAGE OF WEST MILWAUKEECode Enforcement

Fire PitsIt’s that time of year where we like to sit outside with family and friends and enjoy a bonfire during a nice sum-

mer night. Fire pits in the Village of West Milwaukee ARE legal, but there are some rules that we need to follow.First, the pit you use MUST be completely screened in, which includes having a cover. This should prevent anyembers from reaching a structure or roof. The second rule is that the pit MUST be at least 15 feet away from anystructure (House, shed, garage, etc.). This is a state law that must be followed. Also, you should always have ahose or fire extinguisher nearby just in case! The last thing to remember is to be mindful of your neighbors. The homes in the Village are in close proxim-

ity; therefore, make sure the wind or breeze is not blowing smoke into your neighbor’s home through open win-dows. This could be considered a nuisance and a citation could possibly be issued. So enjoy the summer but be mindful of the rules that need to be followed.
