    Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

Dear Dr. Winter, I was wondering if most peopleare happy with their dentures? Do they eat well? Ihave 6 veneers that have failed. After they werenstalled I couldn't eat or speak properly and my backeeth didn't touch any more! Then the dentist ground

on 22 other teeth to make them fit and my bite is offand I am miserable. I would like to have all my teethpulled and have dentures! How much does this costand will I be happy?

Dear Janet, I am sorry you are having problems. From your question, I am not sure I fully understandwhat you are going through. You may have a bite

problem, a skeletal problem or a cosmetic issue or acombination of the above. First, you should realizehat If you can keep your teeth you will chew more

efficiently, eat better, extract better nutrition fromyour food and be happier in the long run. People thathave had dentures for 5 years typically chew with onefifth the biting force of people that have their naturaleeth.

Second, dentures don't work like teeth. They arebig pieces of acrylic with denture teeth. They blockhe roof of your mouth from taste sensations and they

can dislodge with sneezing, yawning or chewing.Over time they will contribute to further deteriorationof the underlying bone through movement of thedentures and friction. So if your situation can bedentified, and fixed, that is what you should do. It is

very easy to think that pulling teeth and gettingdentures will be a solution but in reality they renderyou a dental cripple with a prosthesis that must beelined or remade every 3-5 years as your gum tissues

change. Then if you want to replace these dentureswith implant retained dentures or bridges it can be a

ong and expensive course of treatment compared tosaving your natural teeth. So your dentist shouldevaluate your bite and cosmetics from before yourveneers were done and try and recreate the situationwhere you were comfortable and happy. We would behappy to see you for a second opinion.

Dear Dr. Winter, My wife just had grafting to hergums because they were receding. Her dentist says shenow needs to have braces to prevent the recessionfrom coming back. Is this common practice? It seemsa bit illogical, as her teeth are pretty straight. Thanks.

Dear Neal, grafting for root recession is a

common practice in dentistry. The reason for therecession was probably discussed with your wifeprior to the surgery. If the positioning of the teethcontributed to this recession than an overall plan toprevent the recession from returning-ie: braces- wasprobably discussed. Certainly your wife can alwayssay no to the braces but if the dentist feels this isnecessary to prevent a recurrence it seems wise toconsider this option. It is also possible that judiciousreshaping or recontouring of the teeth could decreaseforces that may have accelerated the recession. Youshould ask the dentist if occlusal equilibration oradjustment could be an option to braces.

We are happy to see our readers for acomprehensive examination or second opinion visit. Please call us at 414-464-9021 to schedule your visit.

1 percent for infants and 54 percent forddlers in passenger cars.

"As we recognize Child Passengerafety Week (which is scheduled foreptember 15-21), its a great time to bere kids are seated safe and secure", saidichele Harris, director, AAA Traffic Safetyulture, The Auto Club Group. Below are aw car seat installation tips:

Always refer to your car seat and vehi-e manuals to ensure correct fit. While itay seem like its common sense to install aar seat, many errors can be avoided tonsure a correct fit. If something is confusing, all the automaker or the car seat manufac-rer for help.

Using the LATCH system? All car seatsnd vehicles manufactured after 2002 mustave a LATCH system. This stands for Lowernchors and (Top) Tethers for Children. The

ATCH system is designed to make installa-on of a car seat easier by attaching the carat directly to anchors that are permanentlytached to the vehicle.Never use the safety

belt if you are using LATCH. Always use boththe bottom and top anchors when forwardfacing.

    * Place the seat flat against the vehicleseat back. Thread the lower LATCH throughthe correct car seat slot.

    * For forward-facing- hook the top tetherfirst.

    * Snap the bottom anchors into place.* Apply pressure into the seat with your

hand while pulling the strap to removeexcess slack.

    * Tighten the top tether last.* Checking from the belt path- the seat

should not move more than an inch from sideto side.

Using the lap/shoulder safety belt? The safety belt is just as safe as the LATCHsystem. Never use the bottom anchors of theLATCH system with the safety belt. Check thecar seat's instructions for the recommendedangle of recline.

    * For forward-facing seats- hook the toptether first.

    * Place the seat flat against the vehicleseat. Thread the safety belt through the cor-rect slot.

    * Lock the lap/shoulder belt into car seatmode by slowly pulling the shoulder belt allthe way out- you will hear a clicking sound

when its in locked mode.* Apply pressure into the seat with your

hand while pulling the shoulder belt from thebuckle so the lap portion is snug. The seat

should not move more than an inch from sideto side from the belt path.

Even today, installing a car seat correct-ly is no easy task! Even with the best of inten-tions, many parents have trouble getting theircar seats installed properly. Many hospitalsoffer car installation classes and at car seat

Didnt get enough gardening in this sea-n? Dont worry there is still time to grow

arden-fresh vegetables and herbs this fallnd winter.

Purchase transplants and seeds that willrow and flourish in the cooler fall and win-r temperatures. Lettuce, spinach, Swiss

hard, root vegetables, edible pansies andalendula as well as cole crops, like broc-oli, are a few to consider.

Those gardening in colder regionseed to select short season crops like let-ce, spinach and radishes that will matureefore extremely cold winter temperaturest in. Extend the fall garden season intointer with the help of floating row covers, oldframes and portable greenhouses.any of the elevated garden systems now

ave built in cold frames or row covertachments to make extending the seasonuch easier.

Try container and elevated gardens likethe VegTrug (www.gardeners.com ) toextend the growing season and increaseyour enjoyment. These contained gardensallow you to plant herbs, vegetables andflowers anywhere. Place a few right outsidethe front door or on the balcony for fun andconvenience. Plus, contained gardens caneasily be moved to a sheltered location orcovered and protected from frost.

Or move your garden indoors. Selectvegetables and herbs that can tolerate theless-than-ideal indoor growing conditions.Greens, onions and root crops, like radish-es and short carrots, will grow in a sunnywindow. Expand your selection with thehelp of artificial lights.

Basil, oregano, thyme, sage, parsley, chives and of course mint are a few favoriteherbs to grow on your kitchen or othersunny windowsill. Increase your harvest
