You may not know what end of a wrenchto hold, but anybody can get a grip on thesehelpful car care tips.

Get the soapPerhaps the simplest thing to do to take

care of your car is to wash it on a regularbasis. Washing your car once a week can help

keep at bay the bugs, tar and other debris thatcan build up over time. Given a foothold, thesethings can become nearly impossible to cleanoff. If you can't manage a once-a-week wash, try for once a month. If you can't manage oncea month and you have kids, hire 'em out.

Check the oil. Stat!Your car's oil is like its blood. It needs to

be checked regularly. Check your owner'smanual for the type of oil your car uses andwhere the oil dipstick under the hood is locat-ed. At least once a month, check your oil level.Top it off if necessary. All you need is the oil, afunnel and some paper towels to clean up any

mess. And while you're checking the oil...Your car has other fluids that need to be

checked every so often as well. These includeautomatic transmission fluid, coolant (anti-freeze), brake fluid, differential oil and powersteering fluid. Consult your owner's manual forthe location of these fluid reservoirs. Checktheir levels periodically, top them off whennecessary and have them changed when yourmanual indicates.

Hold the greaseYou're keeping the outside of your car

looking sharp with regular washings, but howabout under the hood? Head to your localauto parts store and check out the variety ofdegreasers available. Follow the directionsand watch your engine sparkle. An addedbenefit to having a clean engine is it makes iteasier to locate any trouble spots (e.g., leaks).

Windshield woesBetween washings your windshield may

get dirty from rain or snowstorms or our fine-feathered friends. A clean windshield is crucialto safe driving. Virtually any kind of glasscleaner and lint-free towel will have your wind-shield sparkling in no time. Don't forget theinside of the windshield as well. Also checkand clean your windows as necessary.

Out, out, spotIt's no fun noticing a spot or two on your

windshield that you want to clean of f and find-ing out you're out of washer fluid or, worseyet, your wipers are worn out. Wiper bladesshould be changed about once a year. Checkyour washer fluid level when you check the

oil. Lots of lightsThere's nothing worse than looking in your

rearview mirror and seeing the flashing lightsof a police car behind you. Sometimes the rea-son for a traffic stop is as simple as a missingheadlight or taillight. Avoid this problem bydoing a periodic walkaround of your car tomake sure all lighting systems are functioning.Don't forget the light illuminating your licenseplate. Inside the vehicle, make sure all your

In the fall, people begin to think about theharsh roads of winter that lie ahead. Thatmeans checking the tires, the oil and othermechanical systems. If you've taken good careof your car during the year, then you might nothave much to do. In fact, you might want togive yourself a treat and detail the interior ofyour car. Here are some tips.

Basically, cars have two types of surfaces:hard and soft. Vacuuming is really your first

step, and you'll want to make sure you haveenough power in your vacuum to do the job.Often, plug-in vacuums just don't have thepower, so haul your household vacuum or yourshop vac out to the driveway. Be careful not toscratch any hard surfaces. Most vacuums comewith a brush attachment that you can use toclean the hard surfaces without scratchingthem.

Take the floor mats out and wash them witha hose, detergent and scrubber. These are usu-ally the dirtiest areas of the car, and takingthem out will allow you to really put someelbow grease into cleaning them. Vinyl hardsurfaces are the easiest to clean. Any surface

cleaning agent will do, although you will wantto make sure you read the label to check for

any warnings. Saturate a towel with solution, swab the area and then use a microfiber towelto wipe off any excess. Stubborn stains mighttake a couple of washings. If you want to do areally thorough job, take the seats out. This willgive you access to the entire seat as well as thesurrounding area.

Next, you'll want to turn your attention tothe soft surfaces. Are they leather or cloth?Often, the only real leather in a leather interioris on the seating surfaces and the rest of the sur-faces are vinyl. Know the specs on your car to

ensure you use the right products. Leathercleaners require special cleaning materials, socontact a local expert to see what they recom-mend. The best option for cloth seats is a goodfoam carpet cleaner, but that will require awet/dry vacuum to clean. With any product, try cleaning a small, hidden area first to ensureyou won't be removing the color or causing anyother harm to the interior.

Detailing the interior is a job you can do onyour own, although you may have to buy a fewproducts. Keeping the interior in excellentshape will provide you with a better feel in thecar and will add to the resale value. You canput as much or as little time into this interior

remodel as you like, but the more energy youput in, the higher your return will be.

    Tips for interior detailing

interior lights are working properly.Inflation situation

Under- or over-inflated tires can be a dan-gerous-and sometimes deadly-situation. Tiresimproperly inflated wear out faster and can

rob you of the gas mileage you deserve.Check your owner's manual for the properamount of pressure your tires need. Get in thehabit of checking each tire's pressure at regu-lar intervals. You could be saving your life andyou will save money.

Rotating your car's tires is like going tothe dentist. Nobody likes it, but it's some-thing that should be done. Depending onwhere and when it happens, getting a flattire is similar to teeth issues. If a tire goes fl at

in your driveway, it's like a small cavity thathas to be filled. It's annoying but not thatbig a deal. If a tire blows in rush-hour traf-fic, you're talking full-blown root canal, andwho wants that? Here are some tips to pre-vent tire decay.

Most newer model cars are front-wheeldrive, and tire rotation becomes importantbecause the front tires wear faster than therear. The reason for this is simple: Whenyou make any kind of full turn in traffic orfollow the curve of the road, more of thevehicle's weight is placed on the edges of

the tires. This especially affects the fronttires because these are ones that are actu-ally turning while the rear tires stay in astraight line. This turning causes the edgesof the tires to wear over time. If your tireswear unevenly, you're suspectible to spottybraking and poor handling-real toothaches,er, headaches.

Another important aspect to tire rotationis the eventual replacement of your tires. Ifyou don't rotate your tires, you'll replacethem two at a time, and that means alwayshaving uneven wear on your wheels. If you

replace your tires four at a time-and keepthem rotated regularly-you'll have evenwear on all four.

How often should you rotate your tires?

Well, that obviously varies based on theamount of miles you drive each day.Unfortunately, for some drivers, you mayneed to rotate your tires more often thanyou visit the dentist for a checkup. A rota-tion is often recommended at about 7,500miles. That's often the time for an oil

change, so do some multi-tasking and getboth jobs done at once. Check yourowner's manual to see when it recommendstire rotations for your particular model.

How to have your tires rotated has beensubject to debate similar to the discourseover the merits of fluoride. Again, checkyour owner's manual to see if there's a spe-cific method recommended for your modelof vehicle. If there isn't, there are two basicways for front-wheel drive tire rotation, andboth are as simple as flossing. One methodis to move the front driver's side tire to the

back driver's side and the back driver's sideto the front passenger's side. The front pas-senger's side then moves to the back pas-senger's side and the back passenger's sideto the front driver's side. Another method isto swap the front driver's side and the rearpassenger's side tires with each other, andthen swap the front passenger's side tirewith the rear driver's side. Either methodseems to help the tires achieve more eventread wear, and that's what you're after.

Keeping your tires rotated on a regularbasis can prevent an ill-timed flat tire and

that can prevent grinding and gnashingyour teeth-which is a whole different dentalproblem.

When a large home improvement projectlooms, like adding a deck or updating yourkitchen or bathroom, it can be overwhelming. As you write out the supply list, you may findyourself thinking of all the other things youwould rather be doing. If you aren't careful,

those thoughts can take over and the projectmoved to the back burner. To avoid this sce-nario, it may be helpful to look at the projectas a series of stages.

Say you're updating your kitchen. If youthink about everything you have to do fromthe sanding to the painting to the lighting, you are sure to get overwhelmed and put thekibosh on the whole thing. If, however, youtake the time to sit down and stage out theprocess, you are more likely to proceed withit. So, sit down and make a list of all the tasksthat need to be done. Do you plan to changeout the lighting? Write that down. Do youplan to paint the walls and cabinets? Writethat down. Do you plan to replace the trim?Write that down. Do you plan to add a back-splash? Write that down. Do you plan tochange out the countertops? Write thatdown. Keep going until you have every task

listed. Now, take that list and determine what

tasks should occur firs t. Painting, for example, should probably come before the new trim, lighting, backsplash and countertops. Thatway, you won't have to worry about spillingpaint on any of the new items. Once every-thing is painted, you might want to tackle the

trim-your walls and cabinets will then becomplete. Next up should be the countertops.Once they're in, you can install the back-splash and the under-the-cabinet lighting.

Still feeling overwhelmed? Not to worry.Get out your calendar and schedule each ofthe tasks, giving yourself plenty of time tocomplete each. Don't try to paint everythingall in one day. It won't happen. Give yourselfa weekend to prep and paint the walls andan extra long weekend to tackle the cabinets.Work on one section of the cabinets at time.Do the lower cabinet bases one day, theupper cabinet bases the next and the cabinetdoors the day after that. Wrap everything upon the final day with the installation of thedoors and new hardware and whatevertouchups may be needed.

Once you have the tasks scheduled, youcan start gathering the supplies and prepar-

ing for the work ahead. It is important thatyou have everything you need to completeeach task. Multiple trips to the store will slowprogress considerably. It is also importantthat you commit to the schedule and do yourbest to stick to it. Veer off too many times ortry to do too much at once, and you maynever get back on track again. You don't

want to spend the next five years of your lifeworking on your kitchen, or worse, stop workaltogether and end up with a half-finishedkitchen.

Motivation, of course, is half the battle. Ifwalls getting painted and new lighting goingup is not enough to keep you on track, don'thesitate to try something else. Have somefriends over to ooh and ah over what youhave completed and cheer you on to the nextstages, or treat yourself to a movie or dinnerfor each task you complete. Do whatever isneeded to stay motivated. The more progressyou make, the more disciplined you willbecome and the closer you will get to thekitchen you envisioned.

Attacking large home improvement proj-ects in stages can make quick work of them.Give it a shot. You just might get the projectdone and be free for other pursuits.

Equal Opportunity Employer/Precision Tooling & Die Casting

One of the great misleading myths of

    modern manufacturing is that North

America cannot compete in a global

manufacturing marketplace and is losingjobs due to lower foreign labor costs.

This belief is not true, according to

applications engineers at Makino, a global

    provider of advanced machining

technology. They say the automation of

    manufacturing processes, including the

    robotic and conveyor integration of

    manufacturing work cells, can actually

drive the parts production or die and mold

    manufacturing costs down while

    maintaining or enhancing quality. Makino

    has documented such manufacturing

    examples through customer contacts and

    interviews.Investing in such technologically

    advanced processes has become so

productive that the low per-unit-part cost

    makes domestically manufactured goods

competitive with the production of goods

with foreign labor wages. Also, the local

customer service and the shorter lead time

aspects of U.S. and North American

    manufacturing aides in this competitive

    formula, making the company more

    valuable to its customers.

    Making these technological upgrades

will also save U.S. and North American

jobs. Many manufacturers initially fearedthat by investing in automation technology,

jobs would only be lost to the machinery

    as opposed to foreign competitors.

However, as a number of manufacturing

case studies prove, such a technological

    investment actually helps save and

maintain jobs. Hiring also continues to

grow at a significant annual rate to keep up

    with increasing work volume.

In one case study, the cycle times and

lead times for many production processes

    improved dramatically. Some high-volume

production parts that were previous ly

manufactured at a rate of two per hour arenow being manufactured at a rate of 126

per hour. And, some processes that used to

take 12 weeks can now be completed in

    six.

To learn how your company can utilize

work cell automation and integration to

    effectively compete with foreign markets,

    contact [email protected].
