Possibility of no water in two years
>> Water has no substitute and the province is facing a drought, so the situation is urgent.
KAVEEL SINGH
P
ART of the North Coast and
eThekwini could run short of
water in just twoyears if rainfall
trends continue and nothing is done
to augment supplies.
KwaZulu-Natals chief director of
water and sanitation Ashley Starkey
said this at a presentation at the
launch of National Water Week last
week at an Umgeni Water-hosted
event at Hazelmere Dam in Verulam.
Starkey presented a water bal-
ance scenario for the Umgeni water
system,which considered the impact
of planned projects and demand
trends.
Water has no substitute and the
provinceisfacingadrought,sothesit-
uation is urgent, Starkey said.
The Umgeni system provided
about 350 million cubic metres
of water a year, augmented by just
less than 50 million cubic metres
from the Spring Grove Dam.
With demand now at 400 million
cubic metres, it means that there is
just enough water.
By 2017 the areas fed by the sys-
tem could face a short-term deficit.
By 2019 treated effluent water
would come on tap, increasing sup-
plies to 430 million cubic metres a
year.
Desalination of sea water on the
North Coast seems to be expected to
further augment supplies from2023.
The Smithfield Dam augmenta-
tion scheme in 2029 will further
strengthenwatersecurityintheprov-
ince.
Starkey urged people to usewater
sparingly.
Last year at this time, the Hazel-
mereDamwas sitting at 97% capaci-
ty, but is now at 46%. That is half of
itscapacity.Lowrainfallwillcontinue
the trend, he said.
Earlier this year, the damwas sit-
ting at 34.6 percent and water was
predicted to run out by August.
In April, an emergency pumping
scheme from the Tongaat River was
commissioned at a cost of more than
R30 million.
Umgeni Waters chief executive
Cyril Gamede said the organisation
had a short- and a long-term view,
extending to 2030.
We will plan long-term water re-
sources adequacy; establish a water
demand management business unit
to address high water loss, and pro-
actively plan and build new bulk re-
gional water schemeswhile continu-
ously investing in operations and
maintenance.
Non-revenue water lost through
theft or leaks also featured in
the discussion.
Thenationalestimateis36.8per-
cent. Ruralmunicipalities have high-
er usage thanmetros and urbanmu-
nicipalitiesandthevolumeofwaterin
South Africa was 1 580 million cubic
metres per annum,which equated to
30% of total water supply.
This is more than 3.5 times Umgeni
Waters annual supply and the esti-
mated value of this water is R7.2 bil-
lion, said Gamede
Earlier this year KZNwas allocat-
edmore than R353.7 million to ease
the effects of the drought.
JYOTHI LALDAS
MINISTER of Water and Sanitation
Nomvula Mokonyane and MEC for Co
operative Governance and Traditional
Affairs Nomusa DubeNcube were joined
by thousands of Maphumulo residents
to celebrate the official handover of the
Imvutshana Dam on Monday last week.
The launch comes after years of
hardship as residents had to suffer the
indignity of sharing water resources with
livestock.
The dam, worth R230 million, will
benefit more than 150 000 members of
the community who will be drinking po
table water for the first time.
This multimillion rand dam is be
lieved to go a long way to permanently
eradicate clean water scarcity and usher
in dignity to scores of women who had
to endure walking long distances with
babies on their backs, to fetch water in
crocodile infested rivers.
The dams water storage capacity is
3.1 million m and it is part of the four tril
lionrandinvestmentininfrastructurean
nounced by president Jacob Zuma.

CHILDWelfare SA - KwaDukuza com-
memorated International Social
Workers Day last Tuesday.
Theeventwasattendedbytheorga-
nisations board members, staff and
guests.
Child Welfare president Sandeep
Oudhramthankedthoseinattendance
andextendedhisgratitudetothesocial
workerswhomhe said gobeyond the
call of duty.
He said the commemoration was
held to honour social workers and
raise awareness about the work they
do.
Social workers, he said, are an es-
sential part of the community as they
serve and protect the weak, the op-
pressed and the powerless, enabling
them to lead functional, meaningful
and peaceful lives.
We appreciate what our social
workers do, said Oudhram, explain-
ing that the public generally is not
aware of the challenging nature of
their job.
If there were no social workers
children and families would lead dys-
functional lives. Our children,whoare
the future, would suffer.
The society is fortunate to have a
committed and dedicated band of so-
cialworkerswhoarepassionateabout
their work.
Oudhram also acknowledged the
administration staff for the support
they provide for social workers.
Board members, staff and guests
were treated to lunch after the com-
memoration.

Shakaskraal school celebrates milestone
WEEKLY REPORTER
S
HAKASKRAALPrimarySchoolhasa lot tobe
proud of as years of sacrifice and hardwork
finally paid off.
At the end of 2014, heads of the school under-
took tobuild five classroomswith funds fromtheir
own coffers.
With the help of Act for Children and Soul City,
this dream finally materialised.
The acting principal Mr P. Govender said that
heoweshisgratitude toabandofdedicated teach-
ers, a very supportive school governing body and
the community.
The project which costs almost R1million was
successfully completed and occupied by pupils in
2015.
At a glamorous opening held last week, high
ranking officials from the Department of Educa-
tion at all levels: provincial, district and circuit
graced the function togetherwith theKZNmanag-
er of Soul City.
Management, staff and pupils said that it was
indeed a proud moment for the school.
It is not an everyday event that public schools
embark on such undertakings.

NOTHANDO Mpanza placed the onus on
herself to inform local pupils about the
plethora of opportunities available for them
after their secondary schooling.
Shewas able to achieve this by hosting the
KwaDukuzaMunicipality (KDM)FETExpoon
19 and 20 March, at the KwaDukuza Town
Hall.
The event was attended by Stanger High,
MLSultan,StangerSecondary,StangerSouth,
Glenhills Secondary and Tshelenkosi
Secondary Schools grade 12 pupils whowere
given the opportunity to interact with various
institutes of higher education and other
organisations.
Some of the colleges that availed
themselves were Boston, PC Training and
Business College, The Graduate Academy
KZN North Coast and Mfolozi TVET.
Representatives from the Department of
Correctional Services, traffic and from the
banking industry were also present to tell the
pupils about career prospects in their
respective fields as well as the bursaries and
financing opportunities they offer.
Mpanzasaid that she felt compelled tohost
an expo of this nature when she realised that
overcrowding in most South African
universities meant that for some, higher
education would be an unfulfilled dream and
due to a lack of knowledge about other
opportunities they end up at home and
jobless.
It is our duty as the youth of this country
to assist in the development of others in any
way we can, she said.
The other problem she noted was that
pupils generally fail to achieve grades
to meet the stringent university
requirements.
Pupils do not obtain enough qualifying
points to get into university. That is why I saw
it fit to host an event that will expose them to
variousoptions that theymayhavenotknown
about, she said.
The lack of finances is also a major hurdle
for many individuals who have the desire to
study further making such an informative
event an invaluable asset to those pupils who
face such challenges.
This event serves as yet another way of
bridging the education gap between pupils
from rural and urban areas and it gives hope
to those who come from financially
disadvantaged homes, she said.
The expo was a thrilling two days of
information sharing made energetic by
enthusiastic pupils who, during intervals,
entertained their peers with back breaking
dancemovesas thehireddeejay spunrecords
of the latest hits.
Mpanza said the municipality sponsored
the venue and the music and she is grateful
for this.
The KwaDukuza Municipality helped me
in somanyways inmaking this day a success,
whichshowedme that ourmunicipality really
cares and really is all about service delivery,
she said.
She added that the event was her first step
infollowinginthefootstepsofhergrandfather,
General Gizenga Mpanza.

General Gizenga Mpanza was very

that I carryonhis legacyandwalkboldly inhis
footsteps by doing community work, she
said.
They advised us about further education
and financial aid, said Bhekumuzi Hamilton
Khumalo, a grade 12 pupil at ML Sultan, who
continued, andyes, I feel likewedidbenefit,
he said.
The success of last weeks expo has
promptedMpanza tohost them inotherareas
for the benefit of pupils there.
I have decided to move on to other areas
and host such events just to reach out to as
many pupils as possible, she said.

WITH March being TB awareness month,
Sister Kogie Naidoo and community care
worker Bongiwe Mnyandu educated users
of the KwaDukuza and Maphumulo taxi
ranks about the prevalence of Tuberculosis
(TB) and about the symptoms of the dis
ease last week.
Standing outside the satellite clinic sit
uated between the taxi ranks, the two
health workers educated the public about
thesymptomsofTBwhicharecoughingfor
more than two weeks, night sweats, fa
tigue, weight loss, chest pain and coughing
up blood.
According to sister Naidoo, the clinic
has been in the rank for approximately five
years and before her arrival in August last
year, it was an HIV testing station only.
She said that she has since introduced
other health services such as checking vi
tals, taking blood samples for CD4 count,
screening for sexually transmitted diseas
es, family planning, treating of minor ail
ments as well stab wounds and testing
sputum for TB.
People in and around the taxi rank can
come in as they please, said sister Naidoo
adding that she is available at the clinic
from 9am until 4pm daily.
It is good that we have a clinic here in
the rank, said Ntombenhle Mncwango
who runs a stall at the rank.
She urged the public to make use of this
facility as all the services are provided for
free.

The Minister of Communications,
similarly, is becoming the unabashed

Theminister is the political head of

ensure compliance with its mandate.
By all appearance, she is doing the
opposite. Together with chief execu-

using strong-arm tactics to achieve
party political objectives. This is com-

Anyway, a lot is happening every

The SABC is no longer an authentic

LL South Africans are aware
that false advertising, fraud
and corruption are the order
of the day, especially when it comes
to food and drink used everyday by
most households.
No firmor organisation responsi-
ble forsupplyingourlocalsupermar-
kets are prepared to state whether
the product has been subjected to ir-
radiation, hormones for growth, the
pesticides used during the growing
period, and so on, to a never ending
list.
Recently I have been surprised to
learn how many consumers have
queriedmilk products people from
Johannesburg to Bloemfontein to
Margate.
My curiosity peaked and I visited
thethreebiggersupermarketsonthe
South Coast to inspect the freshmilk
shelves.
This visit resulted in discovering
there are only four name brands
stockedand these areClover, Crystal
Valley,OrangeGroveandPick nPay.
The fresh milk products are full
creammilk, twopercent lowfatmilk,
onepercent low fatmilk, low fatmilk
and fat free milk.
I have personally lived on small
holdings for many years and have
kept my own cows, chickens, pigs
andsheepandhavegrownalotof the
abovefoodasalsomyownvegetables
and fruit, although not being an ex-
pert inanyof theabove,oneacquires
a certain working knowledge.
Would the producers (maybe this
is the wrong word as mainly cows,
goats and coconuts produce milk),
kindly explain the difference in the
aboveproducts,thepricedifferentia-
tionandwhyfullcreammilkdoesnot
appear to have any cream.
As is known by most people,
cream, being lighter than the milk,
floats to the top.Howmany consum-
ers who support the supermarkets
have seen any cream in any of the
fresh milk containers?
The reply to the above is eagerly
awaited by many thousands of con-
sumers.

KFC Shakaskraals

WEEKLY REPORTER
T
HE dusty pathways, blazing
heat and ridged roads did not
deter representatives from
Boston City Campus and Business
College Stanger and the Department
ofJusticewhentheyembarkedonthe
journey to Harry Bodasing Primary
School, L Bodasing Primary School
and ML Sultan Kranskloof Primary
last Tuesday.
In commemoration of Human
Rights month, branch manager of
BostonStangerAnnieWilsondecided
to donate two entertainment combos
to each of the three disadvantaged
schools. The schools are all no-fee
schools and are in a poor state after
being vandalised, with one school
having its doors,window frames and
even the electricity boxes stolen.
Wilson said: It is a very sad day
whenunthinkingpeoplewillinglyde-
rail the education and advancement
of their own children.
What example are they setting
andhowmuchdamagearetheycaus-
ing? Do they not want better lives for
their children who will be the next
generation of leaders, workers and
artisans? Nelson Mandela himself
said that Education is the strongest
weapon we can use to change the
word.
We should all do what we can to
advance our youth education,
through any means, big or small.
As part of the handover presenta-
tions, Dees Subraylu of the Depart-
mentofJusticeremindedthepupilsof
thetrueessenceofHumanRightsDay.
Kishore Bodasing, principal of
Harry Bodasing Primary School,
thankedBostonStanger for thedona-
tion saying: It is indeed gratifying to
know that there are people like your-
selfwho take cognisanceof theneeds
of the less fortunateandaresowilling
tolendahelpinghand.Yourgenerosi-
ty isdeeplyappreciatedandhasmost
certainly brought some measure of
joy into the hearts of our dear chil-
dren.
NirvanaNaidooofBostonStanger
officially handed over the six televi-
sion sets and VCRs to the respective
school principals after a brief talk.
The principals from L Bodasing
and ML Sultan Kranskloof were also
very grateful to Boston Stanger for
their generous donation.

GLAUCOMA is a disease in which the optic nerve is
damaged by high pressure inside the eye.
Anyone can have glaucoma and is most common
after the age of 40.
It sometimes is hereditary, so family members of
glaucoma patients should be examined.
Vision loss as a result of glaucoma cannot be re
covered, but early diagnosis and treatment can pre
vent further vision loss.
Usually no symptoms are present, so it can only
be diagnosed by a full examination.
How is glaucoma detected? Tongaat Eye Centre
is fully equipped to do a thorough screening and it
is as follows: 1. Dilated fundus examination
2. Visual Fields Test
3. OCT high resolution scan of optic nerve and
retina.
4. Tonometry to measure the Intraocular pres
sure in the eye.
Once the diagnosis is made, the primary treat
ment is drops to reduce the intraocular pressure.
If vision loss occurs even after regular use of drops,
laser treatment or surgery may be required.

Acupuncture treats chronic
back and leg pain and
numbness
B
ACKpainisacommonprob-
lem these days, affecting
people of all age groups.
Back pain has many different
formslikeupper, lowerandmiddle
pain.
Causes of back pain
Backmusclesmaygetstraineddue
to incorrect posture while stand-
ingsleepingorsittingfor longperi-
ods,excessivebodyweight,repeti-
tive bending or lifting of heavy ob-
jects. Slipped disc is another
condition which is responsible for
back pain.
Thishappenswhen thecartilage
disc of the vertebraewear out and
pressanynerveroot. If thesciatica
nerve root, located at the lower
spine region gets pressed then it
leads to chronic lower back pain
that often gets extended to the legs
andisaccompaniedbynumbness.
Elderly people suffer from
chronic back pain due to osteoar-
thritis affecting the spine, chronic
back pain may get triggered by
stress and anxiety.
The involvement of emotional
stress causes disc degeneration or
herniation.
Prolongedemotional stress cre-
ates a sympathetic dominant state
in autonomic nervous system and
leads to decreased blood flow to
most of the organs, muscles and
peripheral tissues.
When blood flow to the lumber
muscles is decreased, themuscles
become tight, loose flexibility and
are easily fatigued.
Treatment with acupuncture
Acupuncture enhances blood cir-
culation especially in the area that
there is pain or discomfort. When
circulation in the tissue improves,
muscle relaxation occurs and im-
mediate pain reduction occurs in
many cases.
In some other cases, however,
when circulation improves, the
painintheaffectedareaintensifies
and is then followed by repair of
tissue and muscle relaxation.
Proper circulation in the tissue
is important not only for blood to
nourish the tissue but also in en-
hancing the elimination of muscle
fatigue and pain causing substan-
ces(eg.lacticacid)thusresultingin
healthy tissue.
Acupuncture, cupping therapy
and therapeutic massage offers
great relief for your back pain.
If other therapy has failed then
maybe its timeyou tried acupunc-
ture.
