I AM a resident of Stanger Manor and afan of your paper; I write this withmuch concern about the justice systemof our country.

Crime, like in any town, city or countryis always rife and never an easy task tocombat. I understand that this is aproblem that will never go away, but Ido believe that it can be controlled ona much larger scale than is being donenow.

In recent times I have become highlydisgusted by the sentencing that'sbeen given to “the scum” who havecommitted premeditated and barbariccrimes.

The law might as well do nothingbecause the time given in jail is like a

slap on the wrist, a mild warning towould-be offenders walking the streets.

A man who kills his girlfriendbecause she broke up with him gets 12years; is that justice?

We live in a society where a girl isstrangled to death by the gardenerand he gets 15 years in prison. Is thisthe law we respect and trust?

A 30-year-old woman kills her in-fant baby by strangulation and gets15 years. Is this the going rate formurder? Most of the time these crimi-nals are let out on early parole, freeonce again to plague our society.

So I say bring in the death penalty;increase sentencing to life without pa-role, let the families of the victims havepeace of mind knowing that the personthat took their loved one away is wherethey belong - out of society.

Letter

Dear Santa,

While untravelled North Coasters sitand complain at how cold 18 degrees feels,I trust you are enjoying mid-summer at theNorth Pole.

I have never been there, or bothered toGoogle it, but I’m imagining that the ice-bergs melt into pleasant pools in which youand Mrs Claus wallow while sipping PinaColadas, which must make a pleasantchange from eggnog.

I would like to start by saying you disap-pointed me a little last Christmas. Whilefestive cheer and time with my family was

all in order, my stocking did not contain theipad, new car key or large cheque that I re-quested in my last correspondence.

My new year’s resolution was thusbased firmly upon your policy of “watchingout and not crying” in preparation for yourannual “coming to town”.

Given that this year’s Christmas list willbe bigger and more ambitious than everbefore, I thought I would give you an up-date on my good behaviour in 2014 now,to ensure that the elves have ample timeto make and procure the items on said list.

Let me start with the bad news. Despitemy best intentions, one cannot go from evilincarnate to sainthood within a mere sixand a half months. I have done nothing toalleviate world hunger.

None of my proceeds have gone tocharity, unless paying a parking fee for adistraught old lady before allowing some-one else to help her cross the road counts.

Even though I really have tried hard, Iam still not able to wake up in time to beat work at 8am, ever. After attending yogaclasses and meditation workshops, and re-searching the art of Zen while inhaling co-pious amounts of incense, I am still unableto abide the rash, brash and frankly stupidactions of the following groups of people:The young and in love, the old and obsti-nate, giggling gossipers and those whothink that DSTV offers any value for money

whatsoever. On the up side – yes, Santa, I really have

been a good girl in many respects – I amproud to report the following: I have re-frained from inflicting harm on anybody, atleast in a physical sense.

This is in spite of a recent plethora ofdiseased, hacking, sneezing and splutter-ing colleagues refusing to take sick leave, thus distributing their ample germs withthe help of our open-office air conditioningsystem.

With the help of my new and vastly-un-derpowered car, I can honestly tell you thatI have not exceeded the speed limit evenonce this year. My trusty steed, while af-fordable and possessing a propensity torun on air rather than petrol, is simply notcapable of sustaining anything more than90kph up any given hill.

With my law-abiding now at an all-time high thanks to this, I have begun toperceive a glowing mass upon my head, which I remain convinced must be a halorather than proof of the need for a haircut.

In addition to the above-mentionedsaintly pursuits, I am happy to report thatI have cut my alcohol intake by at least twopercent, patiently endured the unreason-able demands of my superiors at work.

I look forward to your favourable re-sponseonChristmasmorning.Givemyloveto the Mrs, the elves, and the reindeer.

My mid-year reportto dear old Santa

Foot surgerythe future?>> Forget botox and fillers – foot surgeryto fit into those killer heels is the new fad.

BIZARRE beauty treatments arenothing new. We’ve probablyheard them all – from the cultur-

al practice of stretching one’s earlobes,to hand rejuvenation surgery in orderto take the perfect engagement ring

selfie. But, nothing could quite prepare us

for the horror (and ridiculousness)that is “Cinderella surgery”.

It’s not sommer a surgery to fix amedical problem. No. This surgery ispurely for cosmetic purposes.

For making it easier to wear high-heel shoes to be exact.

According to the Daily Mail, theprocedure involves shortening orlengthening of toes, shaving off partsof the toe to make it more streamlineand sucking excess fat from big toes.

It costs close to R100 000 and al-though you’ll be able to wear the shoesof your dreams (because apparentlyugly feet aren’t the worst thing ever.I mean, really, who cares what yourfeet look like? They’re in shoes mostof the time anyway, right?) Anyway.

Other than the ridiculous price tag, orthopedic surgeons warn that cuttingtoes open, sawing the bones and sew-ing them back together has the poten-tial for serious complications, like per-manentpainandrestrictedjointmove-

This surgery is purely for cosmet-ic purposes.

EXFOLIATORS are lovely, but aren'tvery good for the environment. Whynottrysomehome-madescrubrecipesinstead?If used correctly, nothing beats an exfoliat-ing scrub to help clear dead skin, cleansepores, and make you feel fresh. One problem: the miniature plastic micro-beads found in most exfoliating productsare horribly bad for the environment.Micro-beads are tiny balls of plastic. So tiny, research has shown they're too small to besifted out during water treatment, and sothey're winding up in lakes and oceanswhere they have devastating effects, ac-cording to Time. For this reason, many states in America areconsidering a ban on these beads. In fact,Illinois has banned them already.A South African ban on micro-beads is prob-ably quite far away, but that's no reason tokeep using products that hurt the environ-ment.Luckily for us and our skin, home-made ex-foliator is cheap and easy to make, environ-mentally friendly, and, above all, absolutelyluxurious. We could list a collection of recipes, but allrecipes follow the same basic formula:Base + ExfoliatorSometimes it's a little more complicatedlike:Base + Base + Exfoliator + Optional ExtrasBut you get the idea. Following our guide tothe best bases and exfoliators, try mix andmatch to find the perfect recipes for you. Wehave listed some example recipes as well.Note:Used roughly, exfoliator can tear and harmthe skin. Make sure you only exfoliate gentlyand in moderation.Remember, exfoliator can be harsh, so makesure you only mix in a small amount, espe-cially if you're making a scrub for your face.

Not everyone's skin is the same. Do researchbefore adding an ingredient to your scrub tomake sure it's okay for your skin type.Bases:1) HoneyA natural anti-bacterial, honey is both heal-ing and moisturising.2) MilkCleopatra bathed in milk and honey for areason. Milk should leave your skin feelingsoft and smooth.3) WaterNothing like plain old water.4) Green teaRevitalising and refreshing, green tea is oneof those things that's good for you both in-side and out!5) Olive OilOil is the ultimate moisturiser, though don'tfeel olive oil is your only option. You mightwant to try avocado oil, coconut oil, or evensunflower oil instead.Exfoliators:Note: not all exfoliators are going to be okayfor your face. Make sure you only use exfolia-

tors with a very fine grain.1) Bicarbonate of sodaPerfect for delicate exfoliating, as in a facescrub, bicarbonate of soda is like micro-beads - without the horrible environmentaleffects.2) SugarWhodoesn'thavesugar?Tryacoarsebrownsugar for your body scrub, or a fine castorsugar for your face.3) OatmealBest mixed with warm water or milk, as itshould be slightly cooked, oatmeal is won-derfully soothing, and can help with every-thing from sunburn to acne.

It's probably the safest option, especial-ly for your face.4) Ground CoffeeThe best thing about this exfoliator is thedelicious scent.

Coffee is also meant to have anti-cellu-lite properties, as well as being full of anti-oxidants, and should help tighten and tone.

A South African ban on micro-beads is probably quite far away, but that's noreason to keep using products that hurt the environment.

What can you do on Mandela Day?>> Mandela gave 67 years of his life fighting for the rights of humanity. It’s fitting that we give 67 minutes of our time

MADIBA is one of South Africa's greatest heroes. Not only is he loved and adored by South Afri-cans, he is also revered internationally. So

much so, that his birthday on 18 July is celebrated asMandela Day the world over - with it even being offi-cially endorsed by the United Nations.*What is Mandela Day

The message is simple. Mandela gave 67 years ofhis life fighting for the rights of humanity. It seems onlyfitting that we give 67 minutes of our time on this day, whether it’s supporting a chosen charity or serving inthe local community.

It is a day where Nelson Mandela's life's work is cel-ebrated annually through an act of kindness. Peopleare asked to spend 67minutes of the day helpingsomeone else. What can I do with my 67 minutes you might be ask-ing?

Really, there are no set rules. Anything that will im-pact someone else's life positively. Scott Adams, au-thor and creator of the Dilbert comic strip, said, "Re-member there's no such thing as a small act of kind-ness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end."Otherwise, here are some ideas...

1. Make a new friend. Get to know someone froma different cultural background. Only through mutualunderstanding can we rid our communities of intoler-ance and xenophobia.

2. Read to someone who can't. Visit a local homefor the blind and open up a new world for someoneelse.

3. Fix the potholes in your street or neighbourhood.4. Help out at the local animal shelter. Dogs with-

out homes still need a walk and a bit of love.5. Find out from your local library if it has a story

hour and offer to read during it.6.Offertotakeanelderlyneighbourwhocan'tdrive

to do their shopping/chores.7. Organise a litter cleanup day in your area.8. Get a group of people to each knit a square and

make a blanket for someone in need.9. Volunteer at your police station or local faith-

based organisation.10. Donate your skills!11. If you're a builder, help build or improve some-

one's home.12. Help someone to get his/her business off the

ground. 13. Build a website for someone who needsone, or for a cause you think needs the support.

14. Help someone get a job. Put together and printa CV for them, or help them with their interview skills.

15. If you're a lawyer, do some pro bono work fora worthwhile cause or person.

16. Write to your area councillor about a problemin the area that requires attention, which you, in yourpersonal capacity, are unable to attend to.

17. Sponsor a group of learners to go to the theatre/zoo.

Help out for good health18. Get in touch with your local HIV organisations

and find out how you can help.19. Help out at your local hospice, as staff members

often need as much support as the patients.20. Many terminally ill people have no one to speak

to. Take a little time to have a chat and bring somesunshine into their lives.

21. Talk to your friends and family about HIV.22. Get tested for HIV and encourage your partner

to do so too.23. Take a bag full of toys to a local hospital that

has a children's ward.24. Take younger members of your family for a walk

in the park.25. Donate some medical supplies to a local com-

munity clinic.26. Take someone you know, who can't afford it,

to get their eyes tested or their teeth checked.27. Bake something for a support group of your

choice. 28. Start a community garden to encouragehealthy eating in your community.

29. Donate a wheelchair or guide dog, to someonein need.

30. Create a food parcel and give it to someone inneed.

Become an educator31. Offer to help out at your local school.32. Mentor a school leaver or student in your field

of expertise.33. Coach one of the extra-mural activities the

schooloffers.Youcanalsovolunteertocoachanextra-mural activity the school doesn't offer.

34. Offer to provide tutoring in a school subject youare good at.

35. Donate your old computer.36. Help maintain the sports fields.37. Fix up a classroom by replacing broken windows,

doors and light bulbs.38. Donate a bag of art supplies.39. Teach an adult literacy class.40. Paint classrooms and school buildings.41. Donate your old textbooks, or any other good

books, to a school library.Help those living in poverty42. Buy a few blankets, or grab the ones you no

longer need from home and give them to someone inneed.

43. Clean out your cupboard and donate the

clothes you no longer wear to someone who needsthem.

44. Put together food parcels for a needy family.45. Organise a bake sale, car wash or garage sale

for charity and donate the proceeds.46.Tothepoorestofthepoor,shoescanbealuxury.

Don't hoard them if you don't wear them. Pass themon! 47. Volunteer at your local soup kitchen.

Care for the youth48. Help at a local children's home or orphanage.49. Help the kids with their studies.50. Organise a friendly game of soccer, or sponsor

the kids to watch a game at the local stadium.51. Coach a sports team and make new friends.52. Donate sporting equipment to a children's shel-

ter.53. Donate educational toys and books to a chil-

dren's home.

59. Take someone's dog for a walk if they are toofrail to do so themselves.

60. Mow someone's lawn and help them to fixthings around their house.

Look after your environment61. Iftherearenorecyclingcentresinyourarea,peti-

tion your area councillor to provide one.62. Donate indigenous trees to beautify neighbour-

hoods in poorer areas.63. Collect old newspapers from a school/commu-

nity centre/hospital and take them to a recycling cen-tre.

64. Identify open manhole covers or drains in yourarea and report them to the local authorities.

65. Organise the company/school/organisationthat you work with to switch off all unnecessary lightsand power supplies at night and on weekends.

-NEWS24People are asked to spend 67minutes of the day helping someone else.

54. Paint, or repair, infrastructure at an or-phanage or youth cen-tre.

55. Mentor some-one. Make time to lis-ten to what the kidshave to say and givethem good advice.

Treasure the elder-ly

56. If you play an in-strument, visit your lo-cal old-age home andspend an hour playingfor the residents andstaff.

57. Learn the storyof someone older thanyou. Too often peopleforget that the elderlyhave a wealth of expe-rience and wisdomand, more often thannot, an interesting sto-ry to tell.

58. Take an elderlyperson grocery shop-ping; they will appreci-ate your company andassistance.
