Residents demand police action>> KwaDukuza SAPS took more than six hours to answer phone

MERVYN KRISHNA

“THE KwaDukuza SAPSmust close down, or em-ploy someonewho is com-

petent to run the station.”Thesearethewordsofafrustrated

victim of crime in KwaDukuza.Following a series of articles re-

gardingcriminalactivities inKwaDu-kuza, theWeeklyhasbeen inundatedwith calls from residents saying thatthey are about to take matters intotheirownhandsif thepolicedonotin-tervene.

This comes after several break-ins, burglaries and hijackings whichhave been spiralling out of control inthe area and the KwaDukuza SAPShaving no system in place to preventor combat these criminal activities.

Local resident Sabitha Harryper-sad of Bux’s Building in King ShakaStreet, whosevehiclewasbrokeninto

for the second time in the early hoursof Tuesdaymorning said theKwaDu-kuza SAPS must close down or thestation commander must be re-placed.

“It is blatant, everyone can seethat. Last weekwhenmy vehiclewasbroken into, I contacted the KwaDu-kuzaSAPSfrom1:30am.Theydidnotanswertheirphones.Alltheresidentsresidingintheflatalsotriedtocontactthepolice,butthephonesjustrangforhours.

“I then contactedK9 Securitywhoresponded swiftly. They also tried tocontacttheSAPStonoavail. However,I kept on trying until after 8am,whenan officer finally answered thephone,” said Harrypersad.

The angry victim said: “I reallydon’t know forhow longwearegoingto put up with shoddy and incompe-tent people at the station.”

This, however, is just one of the

many crime-related incidents thathave residents hot under the collar.

According to a seasoned police of-ficeratKwaDukuza,whoasked to re-main anonymous, crime in KwaDu-kuzaisgettingoutofhandandthesta-tion commander has failed thecommunity of KwaDukuza.

“Shedoesnothaveaplanofactionandhasnoskills to runsuchabig sta-tion.”

Another outraged resident, whowas hijacked and robbed twice, An-ton Naidoo said the time when resi-dents plan to take the law into theirown hands is approaching rapidly.

“The KwaDukuza SAPS has failedus. It isglaring, thestationcommand-er cannot run the station, and you donotneed tobea rocket scientist to fig-ure it out. The residents need to takeactiontoprotecttheirfamilyandtheirpossessions.”

Another victim of crime Vusi

Mthembu said the local private secu-rity companies are doing a far betterjob than the SAPS.

“Every night before we sleep, wepray to God to guard us one morenightandwearethankfulthatwemaylive to see another day.”

Another resident who was hi-jacked and robbed, Henry Naickersaid theANCregionalcommitteeheld

ameetingrecentlywiththeprovincialcommissioner and called for the re-movaloftheKwaDukuzastationcom-mander.

The meeting took place at theStanger Supper Room and an out-come is yet to be announced.

Station commander Bongiwe Sit-hole could not be reached for com-ment at the time of going to press.

The protesters held-up placardsthat portrayed their growing con-cernsoverthecrimesintheircommu-nities.

Sheriff said because of the nation-wide outcry, various churches weremarching in solidarity with the com-munity against crime.

“This means churches are also

taking a stand against the social illsfaced by the community, because weare also part of the community. Theinitiative belonged to everyone, irre-spective of their denomination.

“One more rape, violent act anddeath toawomanorchild is toomuchand we are all here for one purpose,to fight this evil in our communities,”said Sheriff.

Happy accidents and God’s grace

TO kick off Mandela Week I thought I should givea joyful account of why you andeveryone you know (and the rest of the cos

mos) should not exist.Hopefully by the end of this column you will

have decided if you exist by the grace of God or if youare nothing but a happy accident.

We gather our perception of the universe from“the standardmodel”, which predicted something called the HiggsBoson,

infamously known as the “GodParticle”.

Hints of the particle were found by scientists using the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), in Geneva in July2012.

The LHC is currently the largest scientific instrument in the world, having a circumference of 27 kilometres and spanning three countries (the SKA willdethrone the LHC with 2000 satellite dishes in Africaand another 1000 inAustralia when it is completed in 2024).

ing to type.It must be said however, that

the scientists who conducted the Bicep2 experimentadmit that they may not have, in fact, detected gravitational waves — the ripples from the cosmic inflation— instead they may have detected space dust fromour own galaxy, the Milky Way.

Stuff happens, that’s science for you.So, something is not right here.Obviously there are other

physics we are yet to understand at play.Maybe it has something to do with dark matter,

maybe not.At this point we can only

speculate and avoid what I just did, using dark matter— a force we barely understand — to try to account fora result that should not be.

This is what science is all about, what excites mostscientists — and science journalists alike — the advent of what is to be known and what new mysterycould be born out of new discoveries.

Paraphrasing Nelson Mandela, when one reachesthe top of a hill, one finds that there are many moreto be climbed.

That is basically the path ofscientific discovery.

Also, when one reaches that crest of discovery, onemay find that when looking back there are potholesleft behind, gaps in the knowledge of what we alreadyknow.

Happy knowledge hunting.

The existence of this particle means thereis a “Higgs field”, which is thought to givemass to other particles, if the standardmodel holds true.

In March, this publicationreported on the Bicep2 resultsfrom a telescope placed on the South Polewhich claimedthey had indirectly detectedgravitational waves, which are the ripples inspace consistent with the idea that the universe expanded rapidly very shortly after the“Big Bang”.

Together these two discoveries seem tosuggest that the universe should not exist —that the cosmos should have collapsed onitselfalmost immediately after the Big Bang.

This obviously isn’t true, or I would notbe sitting here watching television while try

Middle ear infections in children>> Most middle ear infections occur when an infection such as a cold causes mucus to build up in the middle ear

OTITIS media is an infection ofthe middle ear that is particu-larly common in young chil-

dren.Althoughanyone candevelopamiddle-earinfection,75%ofcasesoc-cur in children under 10. Infants be-

tween six and 15 months are mostcommonly affected. It's estimatedthataroundoneineveryfourchildrenwill have had at least onemiddle-earinfection by the time they are 10.

What causes middle-ear infec-tions?

The middle ear is located directlybehindtheeardrum.Itcontainsthreetinybones that transmit soundvibra-tionsfromtheeardrumtothehearingorgan in the inner ear.

Most middle ear infections occurwhen a viral or bacterial infectionsuch as a cold causes mucus to buildup in the middle ear, which then be-comes infected.

Younger children are particularlyvulnerable to this typeof infectionbe-causethetubethatallowsfreshair in-to the middle ear (the Eustachiantube)issmallerthanitisinadults, andhence, increases the risk of develop-ing middle ear infections.

Signs and symptomsSigns that a young child might

have an ear infection include:pulling, tugging, or rubbing their ear;high temperature (fever);irritability;poor feeding;restlessness at night; and

ter two or three days, they seem to bein a lot of pain, or you notice a dis-chargeofpusorfluid/bloodfromtheirear/s. You should also contact yourdoctor if your childhasanunderlyinghealth condition, suchas cystic fibro-sisorcongenitalheartdisease,whichcouldmake themmore vulnerable tocomplications.

How are middle-ear-infectionstreated?

Mostear infectionsclearupwithinthree to five days and don't need anyspecific treatment. Ifnecessary,med-ication should be used to relieve painand a high temperature.

Antibiotics are not routinely usedto treat middle ear infections, al-though theymayoccasionallybepre-scribed if symptoms persist or areparticularly severe.

This will be determined by yourdoctor, after assessing your child.

Can middle-ear infections be pre-vented?

It's not possible to preventmiddleear infections, but there are somethings you can do that may reduceyour child's risk of developing thecondition. These include:make sure your child is up-to-datewith their routine vaccinations – par-ticularly the pneumococcal vac-cine and the DTaP/IPV/Hib (5-in-1) vaccine;avoid exposing your child to smokyenvironments (passive smoking);don't give your child a dummy oncethey are older than six to 12months;don't feedyourchildwhiletheyarely-ing flat on their back; andifpossible, feedyourbabywithbreastmilk rather than formula milk.

Avoiding contact with other chil-drenwhoareunwellmayalsohelpre-duce your child's chances of catchingan infection that could lead to a mid-dle ear infection.

HOOKAH smoking, as with any other type of smoking, is harmful to health, something most youngadults fail to realise a new study reveals.Hookah smoking can be just as dangerous as cigarettes, according to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. However, this study found thatmany young adults believe the water pipes are a safealternative to cigarettes.Smoke filtered through waterResearchers asked patrons, aged 18 to 30, at threeSouthern California hookah lounges if they thoughtthat hookah use could be harmful. More than halfsaid they did not believe that it would harm theirhealth. When asked why they believed hookahs were not ahealth threat, 47 percent said they thought thesmoke gets filtered through the water. More thanonethird thought the fruit used to flavour the tobacco detoxifies harmful chemicals, and 16 percent saidthe tobacco used in hookahs doesn't contain nicotine and isn't addictive. None of those beliefs is true, said the authors of the study in the July/August issueof the journal Nursing Research.Previous research has shown that while cigarette usecontinues to fall, hookah smoking is on the rise, especially among college students.Health24

MUSLIMS follow a lunar calendarand not a solar calendar.

On a lunar calendar the year is11 to 12 days shorter than the so-lar year.

So one cannot say if the daysand dates of Eid-Ul-Fitr for theyear2014wouldbesimilar to thatof the year 2013.

Eid-Ul-Fitr BeginningThe beginning of Ramadaan,

theninthmonthof the Islamic cal-endar is also decided by the sight-ing of the Crescent moon (hilal).

This sighting of the hilalmarksthe beginning of Ramadaan.

If hilal is seen at night then thenext day is the first day of Rama-daan and fasting.

Alongsimilarlineswhenthehi-lal is visible again at the end of themonth, it is time to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr (break the fast).

When the hilal is sighted it is thebeginningof thenewmonth, Shaw-wal, the tenth month of the Islamiccalendar.

Eid-Ul-FitrMoon Sighting TipsVisibility of the crescent moon

can be affected by a number of fac-tors and so it is recommended thatnumber of observers should be in-volved to sight a correct crescentmoon especially in caseswhere na-ked eyes are used to detect the Eidmoon.

Factors affecting the sighting ofthe crescent moon:

*Distance of the moon from theearth.*Local or geographical conditions(theheightoftheobserverabovesealevel).*Character of the surrounding sur-face and the height of the horizonrelative to the observer.*Variations in the clarity of the at-mosphere and wind direction.*Quality of eyesight of the observer.

Modified Ways Of Eid-Ul-FitrMoon SightingThe concept of the international lu-nar date line (ILDL) has been devel-opedbyProfessor Ilyas inMalaysia.

ILDL forms a curved line on aworld map, which separates areas(west of the line) where there aregreater chances of sighting themoon in the beginning of the lunarmonth along with the areas wherethecrescentmoonislikelytobeseen(east of line). The position of ILDLchanges from month to month.Along similar lines Dr MonzurAhmed has developed a computerprogramme called Mooncalc, which makes use of ILDL and cre-ates world map to show where thecrescent is likely to be seen for thefirst time.

The position, age, phase, orien-tation, appearance and visibility ofthe moon for any date, time and lo-cation on earth can be found outmaking the use of ILDL.

Visibility of the crescent moon canbe affected by a number of factors.

Eid-ul-Fitr traditions>> Eid is the time for celebrations

AFTER Ramadaan, the month offasting, it is time to celebrate theoccasion of EidulFitr.

The sighting of the crescent moon (hilal) on the 29th day of Ramadaan marksthe beginning of Eidulfitr and the end ofRamadaan.

EidUlFitr DayEarly morning on the Eid day all Mus

lims take a bath and have their breakfastof dates and sweets.

All of them wear new clothes on this occasion and visit mosque (masjid) to worship Allah.

Eid prayers are very important apart fromthe five daily prayers and all Muslims arerequired to attend the special prayers inmosque.

Eid is the time for celebrations and allMuslims celebrate this occasion in theirown ways.

Females decorate and clean their houses, not only decorating the houses, theythemselves dress beautifully and applyhenna (mendhi) on their hands just likemen wear new white clothes.

Delicious food is prepared on Eid day.Children enjoy the most as they get giftsand love from all the relatives, as it is theday to exchange gifts.

Muslims greet each other by wishing EidMubarak, which means happy Eid.

Delicious food is prepared on Eid day.Women apply henna for Eid.

A special EidulFitrprayer ceremony is carried out in open areas. All the Muslims reciteTakbir before theprayers:

“Allahu akbr, allahuakbr la illaha ila Allahwa allahu akbr, allahuakbr wa lillah hilhamd”

Which means: “Godis greatest, God isgreatest. There is nodeity but [the one]God. God is greatest,God is greatest and tohim goes all praise.”

This reciting of theTakbir starts from thetime when the crescentmoon is sighted untilthe prayers are said.Muslims are supposedto pay Zakaat al Fitr, almsfortheRamadaanmonth.
