Poor planning for season

He said this week a 30% reduction is wa-ter use will be implemented, up from theuntil now 20%. He said the area usesabout 11 million litres per day, but thisjumps to about 18 million in the Christmasweek.

Umgeni Water corporate stakeholdermanager Shami Harichunder said thedam is about 44% full, but about 15% ofthis is silt and not useable. When queriedabout the viablilty of a desalinationplant, Harichunder said this is still “a longtime away”.

Residents queried why a phased planto raise the Hazelmere walls had not beendone after being on the cards since about2007.

Authorities said this was a Depart-ment of Water and Sanitation project.

The public also raised the issue of wa-ter being lost due to poor infrastructurein some areas in iLembe.

Harichunder said only five percentwas being lost, which is in line with inter-national standards. Dolphin Coast Con-servancy chair Di Jones said this may be

capacities,” said Mdabe.A resident contested a recent an-

nouncement by Siza which stated thatthe town would be fined if water restric-tions were not adhered to. Misra said ac-counts would be scrutinised and individu-als fined.

He said accommodation facilitiesneedtoregisterwithSizasoasnottoincurexorbitant costs in season. When askedabout bore holes in residences, Misra saidthis was an option, but permission wouldneed to be granted by DWA. Other thanpromoting an awareness campaign, au-thorities did not mention a worse-casescenario plan for the festive season.

KwaDukuza electrical department’sNick Hall said as of last week the area isnow on Eskom’s load-shedding schedule, block 15, rather than the municipality’s.

This to allow for weekend sheddingwhen the grid is under pressure. He saidlast Thursday’s full-day outage was dueto upgrading of local infrastructure.

Hall said local substations, the 10mvaShaka’s Rock station working at 14mvaare severely overloaded. He said the newSheffield station would not be completefor at least six months.

“The growth in the area has been phe-nomenal and it has been difficult to keepup. About 10 years ago the load growthwas 72mva, now it is 120mva,” said Hall.

DOCRRA’s Barbara Shingler askedwhat the plan was for the season, towhich Hall said it was “really a challenge”.

He later explained the municipality’sgeyser rotational system would help toprevent unplanned outages and loadshedding, but said the public had notbeen co-operating. “We have installedabout 8 200, but need an extra 3 300 tobe effective,” said Hall.

DOCRRA chairman Louis Luyt said it

WE have all had to deal with disap-pointment sometime in our lives.

Whether it was that perfect jobyou applied for and didn’t get, or the promo-tion you expected which didn’t materialise,or simply a beautiful tray of seedlings youplanted that were eaten by an army ofsnails.

As hard as it is for adults to work througha disappointment, it is much harder to seeyour child struggling to deal with it. To hearher or him cry “but mom it is not fair”.

We all had to learn the harsh lesson thatlife is certainly not fair, and it is a difficultone that is often repeated a few timesthroughout one’s life.

Yet, it is possible to grow despite harshblows, because it is not in the disappoint-

ment that one learns a lesson, but in the waywe handle it. Do you go sit in your bedroomand sulk foraweek, ordoyoustraightenyourback with a stern resolve to move on?

One of my biggest disappointments afew years ago was realising that a personwhom I called a friend for many years, toldme so many lies that it was difficult to evenfind a shred of truth in her demeanour.

When I caught her out in a blatant lie, Ispent a long time contemplating our“friendship” and realised that final lie waspreceded by others.

I hate being taken advantage of, and I of-ten go rather far out my way to help people, whether they are close friends or not. Butonce bitten, forever shy.

So what did I do with that disappoint-ment?

Now, I tend not to trust people easily. And after that little episode, my circle offriends shrunk a little more, to the pointwhere I realised how few people in life onecan truly call “friends”.

There are many acquaintances, severalmates and a large group of people that I en-joy spending time with. But the handful thatI call my friends have come a long way withme and have earned the status.

But back to disappointments and how todeal with them. My better half sent me anarticle about the Finnish armed forces whodealt with an overwhelming Russian on-slaught at the start of World War 2.

Their small army battled and beat themassive Russian wave, relying on a conceptthat has been part of Finnish culture for hun-dreds of years: Sisu.

The article explains that Sisu is a wordthat has no direct translation, but it refersto the idea of continuing to act even in theface of repeated failures and extreme odds.

It is a way of living life by displaying per-severance even when you have reached theend of your mental and physical capacities.

And therein, I think, lies the secret todealing with challenges or even disappoint-ments. A good friend always says “it is timeto pull up your big girl broeks and get on withlife”.

It is a waste of time to mull over the dis-appointment. No, it is not easy to simplyshrug it off either, but to spend weeks ago-nising over it is useless.

Rather find the lesson, resolve not tobang your head against that particular dooragain and actively search for the positive in

CHRISTA VAN DER WALT

any situation.

Facing disappointment head-on

IT is very unfortunate that Mbuyiseni Mathonsi ofSadtu has been rewarded with a post that pays threetimes more than what he was getting as a principal.

Sadtu did not do anything to force the iLembeEducation District to re-locate from Durban toStanger. There are reasons for the delay in responseto questions asked - most officials live in Durban, relo-cation fee per individual is R30 000 and the questionof suitability of the office in Stanger comes into play.

The Department of Basic Education (DOBE) mustcheck if beneficiaries of a “relocation fee” did actuallyrelocate to Stanger.

The National Union of Teachers (Natu) andparents must write to the Public Protector and Audi-tor-General to investigate how much a month DOBEhas been paying for the new offices in Stanger whilethey aren’t being used.

I also ask the media to request all financial trans-actions between the owner of the building and

Treasury. Natu must also get the “lease agreement”which will reveal that taxpayers paid exorbitantly foroffices which DOBE is not occupying.

I urge the director of ILembe Education District torespond to this letter and reveal what she knowsabout rental payments of unoccupied offices.

Once upon a time an angel held my hand,She wiped away my tears and helped me understand. Our time on earth is brief, there’s lessons to be learned,Each precious day God gives us another page is turned.Every chapter is full of memories, times of joy and tears,

Triumphs and defeats, through every passing year. She loved us unconditionally, always by our side,

When no one else would listen, in her we could confide. With gentle words of wisdom she led us on our way,Down the path of righteousness if ever we did stray.

She saw the light in everyone and gave with no regrets,Always from her heart let us not forget.

Angels come in many forms, for me it is my mother,With love I cannot say in words there’ll never be another.

SAPS cars might be able to access potentialcriminals’ IDs and driving licences and a hostof other data in a few seconds, of at leastthat’s the hope with a new police car thatwas on show at the 2014 GovTech confer-ence at Durban’s International ConventionCentre from 2 to 5 November.

Vodacom and Samsun created whatthey called “a next-generation police car”which uses fixed and mobile networks andthe latest hardware to support the SouthAfrican Police Service.

Each future police car could be fittedwith cameras capable of number plate rec-ognition. Connectivity is provided by LTEand 3G technology and information gath-ered by the cameras could be cross-refer-enced with databases such as those admin-istered by the Department of Transport andthe Department of Home Affairs. According

to Vodacom: “This would dramatically in-crease the ability of the police to detectcriminals and react instantly.”

Thetechnologyineachcarwillalsomake

it possible for police to check ID numbers, driving licences, outstanding road penaltiesand other information in “a few seconds”.Mobile printers would allow officers to issueinfringement notices with information au-tomatically populated from databases.

Vuyani Jarana, chief officer at VodacomBusiness, said: “Our key aim is to use mobiletechnology to address both the social andbusiness challenges facing our customers.“The information that we’ll be able to putat the disposal of the police, combined withco-ordination from a centralised controlcentre, will mean a step change in capabili-ties. In short, the police will be able to domore, in less time, and at a lower cost.”

The tech could be commercially availa-bleearlyin2015andJaranasaidsimilarsolu-tions had been successfully deployed in NewZealand and Italy. — Wheels24.

Nagiah was in devastating formwith the bat, racing to his half-century(50 not out) in the 10th over. Moodaly(32) smashed five fours before beingclean bowled by G. Govender.

Preshen Rampersad joined Nagiahat the crease and this pair kept thescore-board ticking. Rampersad (46)fell four-runs short of a well deservedhalf-century before being dismissedby Liam Luke.

MOVERS United kicked off their campaignin the SAFA KwaDukuza Local Football As-sociation Premier League with a 4-1 routingofTornadoattheRecreationGroundonSat-urday.

Playing against the wind in the first half,United were caught on the counter-attackin the 15th minute after Sakhile Msimangofloated a long ball to the unmarked AyandaDube, who headed powerfully past thekeeper to give Tornado a 1-0 lead.

Tornado could have doubled their ad-vantage minutes later after Mthobisi Gu-

mede beat his marker on the left flank, butinstead of passing the ball to the unmarkedMsimango in the box, he selfishly tried toscore from an acute angle, hitting the side-netting.

In the 25th minute Sphesihle Mpunzanawasted a golden opportunity of snatchingan equalizer. With only the goalkeeper tobeat, he ballooned the ball skywards. Min-utes later United’s Cedric Banda was guiltyof wayward shooting after missing the tar-get from close range.

Barely minutes before half-time therewas some neat exchange of passes bybrothers Akhona and Spheshile Mpunzana

before Sphesihle hammered a low, raspingdrive to the left of the Tornado keeper to lev-el the scores at 1-1.

United enjoyed territorial advantage atthe start of the second half and barely 10minutes later Khethani Manzini gave Unitedthe lead (2-1) for the first time in the match.

In the 65th minute Sakhile Skhakhanecapitalized on a defence error to extendUnited’s lead (3-1).

Man-of-the-match Akhona volleyed theball past the Tornado keeper after latchingonto a precision-timed cross from Mduduziin the 70th minute to give United a dreamstart (4-1) to their league campaign.

A delighted United coach LindokuhleMthethwa was ecstatic with the perform-ance of his charges. Mthethwa said: “Theboys showed character in the opening gameoftheseasonanddespitetrailingearlyinthematch they showed determination and gritand went on to win comfortably.

“I was impressed with the neat exchangeof passes in the centre of the park and let’shope the boys show the same kind of tenaci-ty to win throughout the season.”

rallied back strongly after trailing 13-17 be-fore going down 23-25. They stormed backinto contention after winning the secondset 25-22 to level the scores at 1-1 and pushthe game into a 3rd and decisive set.

Style, spearheaded by Alvin Moonsamythrew everything at their opponents to ekeout a hard fought 15-12 win.

Tuesday’s victory lifted the spirits ofthe Style lads who arrived at the courts onThursday night with a chip on their shoul-

It was a disappointing week for formerleague champions, KSST Volleyball Club.On Tuesday night they suffered a straightset (20-25; 22-25) defeat at the hands ofdefending champions Grove End in theEZE’S Electrical Competitive League.
