Furthermore, some ratepayers along with the African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP), who did not support the event, are irate after the KwaDukuza Municipality shelled out R80 000 to back the Palestine Solidarity March. They believe that the money used to fund the march could have been used toward improving the “lacking” infrastructure in the town. Demonstrators, who included local ANC leadership, held placards reading “Stop Israeli State Terror”, “Freedom for Palestine” and “Gaza - End the Siege” amongst others. They also chanted “end Israel war crime” as they filed through the streets of the CBD. The protestors walked from the KwaDukuza Country Club Ground, through the streets of KwaDukuza and converged in front of the Luthuli statue at the Town Gardens where a series of speakers including Mthembu, ANC regional secretary Muzi Sithole, public relations officer of the Stanger Muslim Association (SMA) Shain Manjoo and guest speaker Muhammed Desai, co-ordi- nator of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions in South Africa (BDS South Africa) addressed the crowd, further cementing their support of Palestine. One resident, Blessing Masinga has said that the march should not have been supported by the munici- pality as it does not represent the en- tire community. “There are other more important issues that the municipality could sort out and should be doing swiftly. “According to our law, any group is allowed to hold demonstrations to show their support, but it was un- necessary for our municipality to pay for it. “By this precedent, any organisa- tion can demand the same. Part of my rates was used and I totally disagree with the wastage.” Mthembu “at- tacked” other political parties for not participating in the protest, especially the ACDP, who were against the march since its conception and chose not to participate. “In line with our ANC 2012 policy resolutions, that called on all South Africans to support the programmes and campaigns of the Palestinian civil society which seek to put pressure on Israel, branches and structures of the ANC across the country joined the Palestine solidarity marches and Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement in organising pro- tests and pickets calling for the im- mediate end of Israeli violence against the Palestinian people. “We call on all South Africans, black, white, Jewish, Muslim, Chris- tian and all others to join us in ex- pressing our solidarity. “Solidarity will bring us together as different South Africans just as how the international anti-apartheid movement brought people together. “The Israeli regime must realise that its acts of violence like these attacks on Gaza will only lead to its international isolation. “Apartheid South Africa’s wanton killing of our people during the 1980s lead to its isolation, it would seem that Israel is taking a similar path of isolation by embarking on these attacks,” said Mthembu. Speaking on behalf of the ACDP councillor Nel Sewraj said the party requested the KwaDukuza Munici- pality to distance itself from the march at a meeting of council. “I asked council to refrain from any direct involvement in this march because the council represents all citizens including Jews in this munic- ipality. “ This march expressed anti-Is- raeli sentiments by calling the public to stand in solidarity with Palestine only. “They even called it the ‘Palestine Solidarity’ march.” PHOTO: MERVYN KRISHNA Some KwaDukuza citizens rallied together in support of the Palestine Solidarity March on Friday. EIGHT Ntshawini children havebeen hospitalised after ingest-ing tablets.

The three girls and five boys, aged between two and five, werefound by family members playingwith empty packets of anti-epilepticmedication on Monday evening.

“Paramedics examined the

children and, despite not being ableto determine how medication thechildren had ingested, they werefound to be in a stable condition.

Mckenzie said the children re-mained stable on the way to hospitaland were handed to medical staff forfurther care.

Despite the situation still being in-vestigated, there are precautionsthat should be taken with regard tomedication.• All medication to be kept out of the

“Also, while the march calledfor support from various organi-sations, it was initiated by anIslamic organisation which gaveit a pro-Palestinian bias already.

“ACDP is pro-peace – not pro-Palestinian.

“This march had too manyreligious overtones to be a pro-peace march so we chose not toparticipate in it.

“Furthermore, I believe themunicipality was too impulsivein coughing up R80 000 of rate-payers’ money in support of thismarch. “We do not support the

KwaDukuza Municipality’s deci-sion.”

He said the ACDP’s decisionwas to support Israel’s right todefend itself against the terroristgroup, Hamas.

“TheACDPbelievesthecurrentconflict between Israel and Gazais a result of the obsession of theterrorist militant, Hamas, toestablish an Islamic state withinIsraeli territory.

“Although propaganda in themedia regarding this conflict hastriggered religious feuds globally,it must be noted that this is not areligious war, but an act of terror-ism.”

THE KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court re-fused to deviate from the minimumsentence and imposed an effective 25years’ imprisonment on a rapist lastweek.

A 19-year-old UKZN student wasaccosted by the accused in March 2013.

He attacked her with a bush knife, robbed her of her cellphone and rapedher. The incident was reported to thepolice who then traced the accusedand apprehended him through thecomplainant’s cellphone. The com-plainant had no knowledge of her as-sailant and was unable to identify him.

The police then strengthened thecase against the accused by obtainingDNA results, which came back positive.

Prosecutor Ansuya Harilal praiseddetective N. Mnyandu for workingaround the clock to gather evidence, leading to his conviction.

“The suspect must have realisedthere was no way out for him becausehe pleaded guilty and asked the courtfor a lenient sentence. The court con-curred with the state and refused to de-viate from the minimum sentences,”said Harilal.

The day myworld shook

LAST week I thought my cocktail of prescriptionmedicines and recreational alcohol abuse hadbackfired on me when my chair at Media House

started moving and shaking of its own accord. Iheaved a massive sigh of relief at the realisation thatothers too had felt the momentary instability.

Before the last particles of air from the aforemen-tioned sigh of relief could escape my lungs, our groupeditor shot out of her office as it had been the quake’sepicentre, and summarily ordered us to evacuate thebuilding, using a voice even more ferocious than theone she saves for when a misplaced apostrophecreeps into a newspaper.

Obeying the barked order of “don’t take the lift!!”,wedescendedthe200(sic)stairsbetweenourofficesand the relative safety of the ground. The voices allaround me seemed to be in agreement that this mustbe the beginning of some disaster movie that wouldlater be a Hollywood blockbuster.

Typically, my own thoughts wandered down a dif-ferent path, and I wondered if there was any way toget an afternoon off out of this. As it transpired, myboss knows me rather well and refused to believe thatnatural disasters traumatise me because my greatgrandfather to the power of 10 was killed in Pompeiiall those years ago.

Upon congregating at the designated safety spot, the rumour mill began its work. Comparisons be-tween Media House and Tongaat mall were bandiedaround like special brownies at Oppikoppi or contra-band sweets at fat camp.

We then took to the web and social media on thedevices we had heroically taken the time to fetch fromour desks before the mad dash to relative safety.

Upon consulting the online oracle, aka Google, aclusterofemployeesweretellingeveryonewithinear-shot that our tremor had been the result of an earth-quake in Nicaragua. Given that the distance betweenDurban and Nicaragua is a hefty 13 222 kilometres,I felt that if this was the case, the Americas must sure-ly have ceased to exist altogether, and the fact thatGoogle was still up and running blew that theory outof the water.

Amarketingassistanthadtobeforciblyrestrainedto keep her from running back into the building to re-trieve her beloved MacBook, and the “no smokingoutside the building” rules were widely flouted in lightof the near-death experience we had just endured.

I would like to conclude this column by telling youthat the company gave us all a shot of Aftershock tocalm our nerves. Alas, that idea, like all my “good”ideas, was shot down by management.

STEPH [email protected]

DAVID Lawson’s letter (August 8, 2014) refers. WhenI condensed my letter against the theories of evolu-tion and Darwinism, it did not mean that there aregaps in my education regarding science, history andtheology. You insult me. Racism started in the 1600s;David Hume, a European psychologist, stated that Af-ricans were naturally inferior to Europeans. ThomasHerbert believed that Africans were inferior and haddescended from apes. Phrenology (study of skull-shape), a “fake” science started even before Darwin-ism, stated that Africans, due to their skull shape, were inferior intellectually, culturally and morallythan Europeans and Teleology stated that Africanswere not thinkers and were obviously made to serveEuropeans. These ideas justified the European in-volvement in the African-slave trade. Only a few peo-ple were against slavery and fought against it.

“Slaves”, as it appears in the Bible refers to workers(paid with food, clothing and shelter) who were sup-posed to be treated well. Aren’t we all slaves to ourjobs? Aren’t we all supposed to be treated well whiledoing our jobs? As for slavery in Islam, the Quran nei-ther ignores nor condemns it. In fact a large part ofthe Sharia is dedicated to the practice hence the posi-tion of Islamic states.

Ancient Greeks were philosophers of everythingaround them, and included gods, goddesses, heroes,heroines and nature gods similar to the gods of an-cient India. Roman barbarians (Nero and his type);

who had no culture of their own, adopted Greek cul-ture when they conquered Greece.

Galileo (Christian scientist - father of modern sci-ence) was charged with heresy when he refutedAristotle (Greek philosopher) and the Roman Catho-lic Church when he agreed with Copernicus’s theorythat the Earth and planets revolved around the sun.

It was the Roman Catholic Church that murderedand persecuted mainline Christians (formerly knownas Protestants) to such an extent that survivors hadto escape to other parts of the world. The RomanCatholic Church added so much pagan traditions toChristianity that one can barely see Christ therein. Sowho can trust what a Roman Catholic says. By theway, the pope is the head of the Roman CatholicChurch, not Christ.

Inconclusion, evolutioniststeachthatall lifearosefrom non-life and evolved from simpler creatures tomore complex life forms. In other words, a tiny celleventually became an amoeba, then a lizard, then amonkey, then finally a human over a period of billionsof years. After 200 years of digging beneath all theEarth’s continents, this cannot be proven as there isno evidence. Where there is no real evidence, evolu-tionary scientists simply make assumptions usingwords like “could”, “maybe” or “perhaps”. Evolutionin no way fits all the facts available. The theory ofevolution is the denial of Almighty God and the denialthat all living things are engineered or exquisitely de-signed by Him.

S. Naidoo• Letter shortened.

I WRITE in response to the Palestine solidaritymarch which took place last Friday.

This march should not have been supported byour municipality as it does not represent the entirecommunity. There are other more important issuesthat the municipality could sort out and should bedoing swiftly.

There are many issues that have been lef unat-tended for months, and which can be given priorityas the entire community should come first.

According to our law, any group is allowed tohold demonstrations to show their support, but itwas unnecessary for our municipality to pay for it.

Surely this is being biased to a particular group.By this precedent set, any organisation can de-mand the same.

Our municipality should be wiser in making de-cisions in the best interest for the entirecommunity.

Part of my rates was used and I totally disagreewith the wastage.

AS a party the ACDP believes that itis our democratic right to voice ouropinion and represent our party'snationwide stance to support Israelin her right to defend her people.

It is a stance that the party decid-ed to continue supporting at ourFCOP in Johannesburg last month.

The ACDP, like many other par-ties, is grieved by the loss of life andterrible anguish for families on bothsides of the Israel-Palestine conflictare suffering. We are not just sup-portingIsrael,wearesupportingthepeopleofPalestinewhoaresufferingunder the tyrannyofHamasoppres-sion.

Our municipality represents all

citizens, including Jews, which itmust be noted, are some of our big-gest ratepayers and businessmenwho contribute to the bread basketof this municipality.

Therefore, I strongly believe thatif we want to take a stance for hu-manity, we cannot position our-selves to just oneside.Thesolidaritymarch by standing with Palestineonly chose to ignore the fact that thehuman rights of Israelis were beingviolated by the constant threat ofmissilesbeing launchedat it. There-fore this march cannot be consid-eredahumanrightsmarchasstatedby the anonymous business mem-ber of the community in the front

page article in the North CoastTimes, 8 August .

The accusation that the ACDPseekstosowdivisionwithinthecom-munity is slanderous and untrue.Thefactthattheprominentbusinessmember chose to remain anony-mous,whilemakingthisaccusation,reveals a lack of decency andmatu-rityonhisorherpart to takerespon-sibility for such an accusation.

The ACDP will not withdraw itssupport of Israel andher right to de-fend her people.Wewill continue tounashamedly stand with Israelagainst terrorism.

ACDP holds firm on stance for Israel

THE Israeli attack on innocent citi-zens and children is a crime againsthumanity. In their quest to protecttheir homeland the Israeli soldiersare destroying homes of thousandsof Palestinians who are now home-lessandhavenowhere togo towhiletheUSandtheUKignore theirplightandsupplyIsraelwitharmsandam-munition.

The US is supposed to be thepeace keeper of the world and yet itpractises such double standards.

As bombing intensifies it is diffi-cult to expect the people of Gaza tosit by idly and accept their positionwhile their territorial waters, elec-tricitysupply,airspaceandlandsare

being occupied by Israel. Manysecretaries of state of the US havemade attempts to seek a two-statesolution for these warring nations, but to date all such attempts haveclearly beenunsuccessfulwhile Pal-estine’s resistance is being labelledas terrorism.

I recommend the South Africangovernment to cut ties with Israeland send their ambassador back toIsrael in protest of the killings of in-nocent civilians in Palestine.

InordertoovercomethisimpasseI urge the US secretary of state JohnKerry to adopt a Codesa-type dealbetween Israel and Palestine wheretheirfatecanbenegotiated.Thepeo-

ple who are qualified to accompanyhimonsuchapeace-brokeringplanare Thabo Mbeki, Cyril Ramaposaand Roelf Meyer.

These men are experienced ne-gotiators and Ihope that theUSgov-ernment learns a thing or two fromthem about lasting peace.

Twenty years ago, South Africawas faced with a similar situationand our leaders resolved the issuesof this countrywithoutarms.NelsonMandela understood that the key todemocracy and a lasting solution isthrough peaceful negotiations andnot through military action.

WEEKLYHOME IMPROVEMENT

Give your bathroom a make-over using these DIY ideas>> A bathroom should be a happy haven, so here are a few DIY ideas you can take hold ofto improve the look and feel of your bathroom

WE spend a great deal of time in the bath-room, yet often we don’t spend time, atten-tion, and money on it, especially if it’s the

master bathroom that our guests will never see.We think a bathroom should be a happy haven,

somewhere you enjoy being, just like your bedroomand living room, so we’ve put together a few DIY ideasyou could take hold of to improve the look and feelof your bathroom.>> Make a bath shelf

Anyone who enjoys wallowing in a hot bath willrecognise the bathtub caddy as a simple but simplyingenious idea. Woes such as “now where can I putmy book where it won’t get wet...” are neatly dealtwith.

This easy DIY project will take you no time at all.To ensure it doesn’t slip off either side, nail two

positioning blocks to the underside. The caddy could also be used as a seat, perhaps

for shaving your legs or to sit on and put your feetin the water while you get the temperature just right.>> Paint the underside of your bath

Painting the underside of a free-standing bathblack can give a room an entirely different look, taking it from sweet and classic to bold and funky.

Give your bathroom a lift by painting the under-side of your bath a strong colour, or alternativelystencil a pattern, even write something, like “get onin”.

It’s more personal and interesting that way, andyou’re not committing to forever – when you wantanother change, you can just repaint it.

>> Install creative shelving and railsA wooden (and perhaps rustic) ladder can work

so well as a towel rail, especially if coupled with an-other wood object, such as a simple shelf for holdingbath products and candles.

Other original ideas for replacing stock-standardtowel rails include embracing the copper-pipe heatedtowel rail look, with its interesting and shiny knobsand dials, or making a rope towel bar, affording yousomething of a beach house vibe.>> Sliding barn door

A barn-style sliding door could be your answer toa space issue, as it would free up the arc space thata traditional door demands.

Or it may simply answer an aesthetic concern;sliding doors are not only more unusual then normalhinge doors and so add an element of interest, butwooden ones also add warmth to a room and createa welcoming look.

You could even consider painting the wood, may-be yellow, to up the fun or vibrancy factor.>> Bathroom chandelier

Chandeliers are not the sole property of diningrooms and bedrooms.

You spend a great deal of time in the bathroom,so make it a special room like any other by installinga beautiful chandelier. Chandeliers also offer soft, flattering lighting, a must when you’re stripped downto your birthday suit.

When choosing a chandelier, consider if a tradi-tionally elaborate one would work best in your space,or else consider a more modern one.>> Lay down a carpet

One can’t really call this DIY, but in keeping withthe theme of revamping your bathroom we couldn’tresist including the great idea of incorporating a ruginto your bathroom décor.

A Persian rug is a great idea as they’re very hardyand can add some interesting detail into a room thatis often too plain.

If you have a built-in bath, make the carpet acentral feature.

Not only would a carpet change the look of yourbathroom, it also has the added benefit in winter ofmaking life warmer underfoot.

Give your bathroom a lift by painting the underside of your bath a strong colour.

ARE you bored with your home the way it is? If so,it’s time for a makeover. Here are some reasons to getstarted on a home improvement project today.Make it sellable. You might not be thinking of sellingright now, but circumstances can change, and if yourhouse is well maintained you’ll be able to sell quicker, and for a higher price.Make it work for the future. Are you planning on add-ing to the family or growing old in your home? Makesure your home can handle your needs. You could turnyour home office into a baby’s room or your garageinto a craft studio – it’s all about figuring out how bestto use the space you have.Make it green. With Eskom prices constantly on therise, looking for ways to save on your utilities will cer-tainly pay off in the long run.

Sure, there might be an initial outlay to pay for asolar geyser or day-night switches for exterior lights, but these are worthwhile investments that increasethe value of your home and save you money.Make it a sanctuary. If the kitchen is the heart of thehome, give it some love. Consider installing a newstove, replacing the countertops or putting in newcupboards. Adding plants to a room is a great but sim-ple way of adding charm and life to a room.Make it work for you. Your bathroom might be work-able, but now is a good time to re-think the finishingtouches.

Get rid of that boring mirror and replace it with aframed one, or replace that old while plastic cabinetwith something that has more character.

Don'tforgetthelighting–lightingiseverythingandthe right kind of lighting can make a difference towhat you see in the mirror.

Make it right for your kids. Don't want to leave yourneighbourhood because your children have friendsacross the road?

The idea of moving and changing schools is daunt-ing and this means that you and your family probablywon't be going anywhere until school is through. Sodon’t wait 12 years to do some home improvement– make your home suitable for the right now. Add aslide in the back garden, or paint the children’s bed-room in fun, bright colours.Make it an eye pleaser. Don't waste another dayavoiding making eye contact with those baby-pinkbathroom tiles.

Are you embarrassed to invite friends over becausethey might snigger at the outdated colours in yourkitchen? Putting in new countertops is easy anddoesn’t cost as much as you might think.Make it fresh. Even if your home feels almost perfect,it could probably do with a minor facelift. Paint yourwalls and skirting boards and the house will instantlyfeel fresh and clean.Make your garage, outside room, laundry roomusable. Are you tired of using your garage, outsideroom or laundry room as one storage unit? Convertit into a living space, such as a games room, or evenadd a cupboard and turn it into an extra bedroom. This will add square footage and increase the valueof your home.Make it smart. House hunting is time-consuming andfrustrating. Instead of spending months looking forsomething else that’s perfect, upgrading your bath-rooms and kitchen or removing that wall that's beenbugging you just might be the solution.

Date : Saturday, 16 August 2014Time : 3:00pm-4:00pmVenue : Sabha Hall, Stanger

We have lost what heaven has gained. One of the best fathers this earth had ever contained.Deep in our hearts a memory is kept of the fatherwe loved and will never forget.

The tears of excess can’t be wiped away but the tears of the heart forever stay. Our deepest wish would be today, to have you back the same sweet way.Rest in Peace “Our Hero”... till we meet again.

Your presence will be highly appreciated.

Sadly missed by your loving wife, Sheila, children Deon and Karen, daugh-ter-in-law Tashni and son-in-law Denver and a host of family and friends.

The lord saw you getting tired & a cure was not tobe, so he put his arms around you and whispered,‘come with me’. With tearful eyes we saw you fadeaway, although we loved you dearly, we could notmake you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, your beautiful smile at rest, God broke our heartsto prove he always takes the best. It’s lonesomehere without you & we miss you so each day, whenwe look at your picture you seem to smile and say,‘don’t cry I’m in Gods keeping, we’ll meet againsomeday.’

Third-generation Kia isbold and back>> Kia introduces interior luxury at its best

THE third-generation Kia Sorento will be un-veiled in Korea next month, featuring bold,swept-back exterior styling, a premium interior

look and luxury features. The new model sports a lower roofline, higher

beltline, a more muscular stance and deeply sculptedbody surfaces.

Together with a larger, more upright “tiger-nose”grille, these design changes have raised the the baron sophistication and style.

The cabin will also create a new standard of luxuryin its segment, thanks to a modern, wrap-arounddashboard, high quality soft-touch materials and arange of advanced on-board technologies.

Interior styling was led by the brand’s design teamin Frankfurt, Germany, which cited the finest modern

Swiss watches as a key influence during the designphase.

The smoothly contoured cabin features soft-touch materials, leather and stitching, as well as Kia’slatest human-machine interface.

A large infotainment screen dominates the centreof the dashboard, which employs long, flowingshapes to envelop the driver and front passenger andemphasise the width and space of the large cabin.

The new Kia Sorento will be showcased in Koreain late August, and is due to make its European pre-miere on Thursday 2 October at the 2014 Paris MotorShow.

It is expected to arrive in South African showroomsin the first quarter of 2015.
