Written in 1987 & 1988, and previously published in The Pine Cone

There is a lady with the improbablename of Gladys Georgiana Green wholives on Carmel Point. She’s had a homehere since 1937, and she very seldomleaves it. She’s about 5 feet tall, has mis-chievous blue eyes and a voice you willnever forget. When her long-time friendand director, Frank Capra, called her somemonths ago and asked her to be his specialguest at a luncheon given in his honor, sheturned him down without hesitation; notthat she doesn’t adore Mr. Capra, but shehates publicity. In her long career, she hasplayed opposite Gary Cooper, JimmyStewart, Cary Grant, Clark Gable, theBarrymores, Alan Ladd and other headlin-ers. You’ll remember her in Shane, YouCan’t Take it With You, Mr. Smith Goesto Washington and dozens of other films. And you’ll remember her as Peter Pan onBroadway, as a professor of drama atVassar and North Carolina State, and as atelevision actress. She was born inPlattsburg, N.Y. in (the record is blurredhere), started a modeling career in NewYork, and accepted a contract inHollywood. Her first hit was TheSaturday Night Kid with Clara Bow. FoxFilms and Paramount missed her appeal, and it took MGM to make her a major star. It’s a pleasure to salute JEAN ARTHUR,one of Carmel’s proudest legends.

On a quiet lane just a few hundred yards from the crashing surf of Carmel Beach a unique experience awaits. This home bespeaks whatcan only be described as the ultimate Country French Cottage décor…it is…Pierre Deux, extraordinaire. Offering pegged-pecan floors, fancifully upholstered walls, marble counters in the top-of-the-line kitchen, open beamed ceilings, hand textured surfaces all combine tomake this 2600 sq. ft., 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath home plus guest house property… sublimely Carmel. $3,695,000

SUBLIMELY CARMEL
