The question before us today is:Why is there a dot over the “j”? We arefully adjusted to dotting “i’s” and cross-ing “t’s”, but this exotic decoration of the“j” is a subject that has puzzled us foryears. In the course of our studies, wehave accounted for the umlaut over the“u”. L’accent grave and breve over othervowels; but not until our researches ledus to Carmel did we discover the secretof the dot over the “j”. It turns out that alady named JUANITA JIMANEZ, writ-ing a letter to a determined suitor in 1916while eating pizza (which was thencalled “tomato pie”), fell into this gram-matic convention entirely by accident. While daintily wiping her mouth, shedropped a bit of anchovie which chancedto fall above the “j” in “rejected.” Allefforts to remove the stain were unveil-ing. She started again with innocuousphrases like “drop dead”, “no way” and“shove it”, but in emphasizing these sen-timents, she wrote “just to make sureyour judgment is clear...” and sureenough, drops of anchovie appeared oneach “j”. Her parish priest said, “Don’tworry about it, it’s just a jaunty jargon, ajolt, a jest, a jingle intended to jilt a jerk.”So she put it down as a jocular joke, andwe have a dot over the “j”. By the way,Juanita Jimanez lived on Junipero, andshe passed away 10 years ago lastJanuary. Or was it June? Maybe July.

The 59th Pebble Beach Concours slatedfor Aug. 16, 2009, will feature 25 differentclasses of automobiles, with participantsvying for ribbons in their individual cate-gories, as well as for best of show. Staged onthe stunning 18th Fairway of the famed P.B.Golf Links, the event is considered one ofthe best in the world, and exhibiting a carthere is considered a sizable feather in a col-lector’s cap. The show also attracts spectatorsfrom all over the world and has raised morethan $11 million for charities.

Organizers issued appli-cation invitations to past par-ticipants and other notablecollectors in November. There is no fee to apply orexhibit, though Button saidorganizers encourage partici-pants to support the charitiesbenefiting from theConcours.

“But an invitation toapply doesn’t mean your caris in,” Button explained. “Weget back about 800 applica-tions for the 175 places onthe field.”

Button reported the docu-ments were arriving in theP.B. Concours offices “fastand furious.”

After the deadline arrives, representatives of each classwill comb through the appli-cations, which include pho-tos and detailed histories ofthe rare vehicles, in order tomake recommendations to a12-person selection commit-

tee this month. The committee will ultimate-ly determine which should be accepted tocompete in the prestigious event.

“It’s a big deal to show your car at PebbleBeach,” Button said.

Committee members focus on cars, notpeople — even when they are people likeConcours regular and well known car afi-cionado Jay Leno.

“Foremost for us, it’s all about the car, notthe owner of the car,” she said. “People ownthese cars and take care of them for the nextgeneration.”

Ideal candidates are authentic and asclose to original as possible, either restoredor preserved.

and experts in the field.“If you’re a Rolls Royce judge, you might

judge 10 other Rolls Royce shows during theyear, and you might know the car,” sheexplained. “We spend dozens of hours dis-cussing each and every car.”

All that effort helps make the Concoursmore exciting for spectators, as the fascinat-ing bits of each car’s history are reduced intoa cohesive, well written description present-ed along with each car. With that context, theautomobiles become much more interestingthan mere functional works of art, as theirstories are often compelling and surprising.

“It takes a lot of time to get things right,”Button said.

“We have cars well over 100 years old, now,” she said.

The 2009 Pebble Beach Concours willfeature Bugatti and Bentley, will celebratethe centennials of Morgan and Audi, and willhighlight the designs of Zagato. Officialssaid successful applicants will receive con-firmation this spring as others are receivingthe bad news their automobiles have beendeclined.

Meanwhile, Button and her Concoursteam members will be hard at work research-ing each of the featured cars.

They will contact restorers who workedon the vehicles, judges who have a lot ofexperience with certain classes or makes,
