Photographers – Help RecordA Day in South Dakota
On Tuesday, Aug. 19, photographers of all kinds will be out and about to record “A Day in South Dakota.” Join us.
Use your phone, your tablet, your camera. The Landscapes Photo Contest offers cash prizes for a Best in Show plus prizes in four categories.
Tuesday, Aug. 19, is World Photography Day. In honor of that and, in anticipation of South Dakota’s 125th Anniversary of Statehood, South Dakota Public Broadcasting asks people across the state to document their life, in photographs, on that day. For “A Day in South Dakota,” professional and amateur photographers will document what being South Dakotan means to them.
Photos must be taken in South Dakota on Aug. 19 and fit into one of four categories:• South Dakota: What being South Dakotan means to me.• Home: Photos related to where and how we live.• Work: Photos related to where and how we work.• Connections: Photos related to everything that connects us to
each other like community, technology, family, energy, faith, cultures, politics and lifestyle.
SDPB will accept submissions from anyone – one per category – and, beginning Aug. 19, the upload instructions will be available for about a week at SDPB.org/Landscapes. Only electronically submitted photos are accepted.
Photos will be judged by a panel of photo professionals, educators and SDPB staff. Top Photos will be posted via Flickr, and a select number will be published in a 2015 SDPB Landscapes Calendar.
SDPB’s Landscapes of South Dakota is a yearlong project that looks at the state’s people, places and experiences. Check out the overall project at SDPB.org/Landscapes.
This photo contest is sponsored by Harold’s Photo Experts.

Can You Dig It?South Dakota Scientist Takes Part in PBS Series
The PBS science series Time Team America is digging into four new archaeological mysteries – and one of them reaches back to the lives of the
very first Americans. South Dakota Anthropologist Dr. Adrien Hannus assists the team as they uncover the secrets of buffalo hunters who roamed the Great Plains 10,000 years ago.
What they find at an Oklahoma bison kill site is fascinating.
“We are trying to pick the brains of people who are no longer there,” says Hannus, Director of the Archeology
Lab and Anthropology Professor at Augustana College in Sioux Falls.
The Time Team finds that hunting 10,000 years ago required more than one skill and teamwork. At Badger Hole, ancient hunters used spears and an atlatl, which is a spear-propelling device that causes the weapon to travel further and faster than a spear thrown by a human arm alone. Once the hunters were successful, the animals had to be butchered, while knappers created and sharpened tools.
Part of the process in the episode “The Bones of Badger Hill” was using actual stone blades to butcher a bison. Stone blades dull very easily so replacing and sharpening the blades was necessary on site.
“Many of the tools that were used prehistorically were every bit as efficient” as many cutting tools used today, Hannus said. To prove that point, back in the 1980s, Hannus talked his own surgeon into using obsidian blades for a procedure. The experience is documented on the Time Team website at PBS.org/time-team (go to Meet the Team and scroll to Contributing Scientists & Experts).

techniques. “Viewers will feels they are right in the trenches,” says Co-Executive Producer David Davis.
The episodes include:The Search for Josiah Henson
– 8pm (7 MT), Tuesday, Aug. 19. Tucked between upscale homes in suburban Maryland just outside Washington, D.C., are the remains of an 1830’s plantation – once home to Josiah Henson, the slave who inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe’s famous novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin.
The Bones of Badger Hills – 9pm (8 MT), Tuesday, Aug. 19. In western Oklahoma, the bones of massive 10,000-year-old bison mingle with the remnants of early man-made weapons. What strategies did hunters use against these mammoth beasts
before the advent of bows and arrows?
Lost Civil War Prison – 8pm (7 MT), Tuesday, Aug. 26. Camp Lawton, near Milan, Georgia, housed 10,000 Union prisoners at the end of the Civil War. The remains of the camp have long been lost to history. Can the Time Team find the original site of the camp?
The Lost Pueblo Village – 9pm (8 MT), Tuesday, Aug. 26. The site of what is believed to have been a 1,200-year-old village is located near Mesa Verde, Colorado, where ancient peoples built one of the first permanent settlements in North America.
Hannus’ favorite part of the series is: “Putting together the bits and pieces of information and working together as a team” to find out how people lived and survived.
ancient hunters – how they could hunt such big animals without the use of more modern tools or horses.
Hannus helped organize the Badger Hole dig site with his colleague Dr. Lee Bement of the University of Oklahoma, who invited the Time Team to visit. Hannus has spent more than 40 years studying the people of the New World, ancient hunting techniques and ancient cultures. He was a key scientist in the first season of Time Team America, which premiered in 2009, and he helped Oregon Public Broadcasting obtain funding for the second season that premieres on Aug. 19.
Each of the four new episodes focuses on different regions and times in U.S. history. The catch is that the Time Team has only three days to make their discoveries. Generally, an archaeological excavation can take months or even years.
“It’s definitely a difficult format,” Hannus says. The point, he adds, “isn’t that you’re absolutely going to find something or not going to find something, but to see what kind of thought process the scholars apply.”
The Time Team for the new season includes scientists Joe Watkins, Allan Maca, Meg Watters, Jeff Brown and Chelsea Rose, as well as host Justine Shapiro. Their archaeological adventures include technologically advanced tools and the hard physical labor involved in a dig.
Everyone’s collaboration during each dig helps tell the story. Viewers are part of the scientific conversations reflecting different perspectives and

South Dakota Wit, Wonder, WeirdRock Garden Tour
North Grown Hardy
Saturday, Aug. 23, 7:30pmMatthewsOperaHouse,Spearfish
Tickets: $20MatthewsOpera.com

Flowerman and Oil Can are at it again as Rock Garden Tour gears up for a new live concert in Spearfish.
SPDB presents a unique concert experience as Flowerman (Producer Ted Heeren) and sidekick Oil Can (Tom Hurlbert) lead an eclectic mix of South Dakota trivia, song parodies, performance and more for “North Grown Hardy: Celebrating 125 Years of South Dakota.”
The audience is in for a wild and witty performance featuring the creative minds behind the SDPB Radio program Rock Garden Tour. The concert will become an SDPB Television special later this year.
“North Grown Hardy,” SDPB Television’s second concert special with Rock Garden Tour, will feature members of the Family Band; Pleasure Horse, a regional band that presents “cosmic country”; and an amusing assortment of South Dakota minutiae, witty garden banter, odd little South Dakota moments, indie/alternative rock and clever home-grown songs about our state.
It celebrates the wonder and weirdness of living in South Dakota.
“It’s a journey to a state of mind,” according to Director of SDPB Radio Joe Tlustos. “It celebrates what makes South Dakota unique.”
The 90-minute concert will include an intermission.
The one-hour radio program,
produced in partnership with the Fresh Produce advertising agency in Sioux Falls, has been part of the SDPB Radio lineup for several years. The stage version of the show and an SDPB TV special from a Sioux Falls concert last year earned rave reviews.
Host Ted Heeren and a coterie of colleagues, friends and relatives generally produce Rock Garden Tour with a live in-studio audience. The show features some recurring characters, like Coach (Heeren’s real life father), and recurring elements, such as the “News from Pierre” or the Family Band, and moves along at a fast pace.
The “Rock Garden Tour” radio program can be heard on SDPB
Radio on the last Saturday of the month at 8pm (7 MT).
Rock Garden Tour “North Grown Hardy” is supported by Landscape Garden Centers, Local Zip Convenience Stores, POET and the Friends of SDPB.
Flowerman Ted Herren hosts Rock Garden Tour.
