Dear Parents and Caregivers,

they are looking forward to next Thursday when they write their last exams.

This week also was the official conclusion of Year 11 with the Prize Giving on Thursday even-

ing. The evening also serves as the official start of the HSC for the Class of 2017. The Platinum

Programme was presented to the students by Mrs. Blomson and the Senior Executive Induc-

One of the great Reddam teachers, Avril Liebman, who has been teaching for fifty one years, had

her retirement farewell party on Wednesday. Avril has served this school tirelessly in every capacity

as one of the original founder teachers. She will best be remembered by her students as a Biology

teacher with exceptionally high standards who engaged her students and shared her love of the

subject enthusiastically with them. Testament to this were the number of her past students who at-

tended her farewell.

This week has also seen the beginning of the “Lunch Time Pitches” for the Year 8 students in the

Entrepreneurship Class. Students have had to come up with a product which they want to launch

as a business. The incredible business proposals and creative products that students have devel-

oped have amazed Ruchika Sahai, their mentor and teacher. A number of her students have

spent Friday integrating with the UTS Business School MBA programme and being exposed to more

business development ideas.

The Year 10 and Year 11 Music Showing on Wednesday evening was another spectacular show of

such diverse talent. The standard of performances continues to improve and the programme set in

place by Dr. McGregor is bearing fruit. Congratulations to the Music students, tutors and staff for

another magnificent evening of music.

The Year 8 and Year 9 Film Festival continued today at Event Cinemas and included the movie

“Open Slay”. This movie, starring all the Middle School teachers and filmed and directed by Mr.

Garratt and Mrs. Pelosi was a hit with the students and certainly a lot of fun in the making.

Year 10 students are reminded that their outstanding work experience forms need to be handed to

Ms. Jones as soon as possible. This is an integral part of the Year 10 curriculum and as such students

may not proceed to Year 11 without completing this mandatory but exceptionally valuable week.

Ms. Jones needs the forms for the student records.

On Sunday evening at 6:00pm in Adelaide Hall, the play directed and produced by Avigayil Erlich,

“What Now” will be performed. Tickets are on sale at the door.

Student achievements this week include:

Last weekend Jayden Raber competed in the state gymnastics competition at Sydney Gym-

nastics and Aquatic Centre where he was placed 1st in the State for level 6. A fantastic result

reflecting all his hard work, commitment and dedication.

In August this year over 5000 of the top Australian students were

invited to sit the 2016 Australian Science Olympiads

Examinations. We are so incredibly proud to announce that

Joseph Newton in Year 10 scored in the top 10% of these

students in the Physics Exam and has been awarded a High

Distinction. (N.B. Only the top 10% of students from the Big

Science Competition are invited to take part in the Australian

Science Olympiads Examinations. Joe is in the top 10% of these

therefore he is in the top 1% of all Australian students in

Physics.)

Jazmyn Bailey’s artwork titled "Hooked on Junk" has just won the senior division of

the Woollahra "Environmental Schools Sculpture Prize". Jazmyn who is in Year 7 competed

against students in Years 11 and 12 from a variety of private and public schools in the eastern

suburbs. She had a lovely interview with the Mayor of Woollahra council Toni Zeltzer as well as

the artist Tracy Deep and a journalist from the Wentworth Courier. Good work Jaz.

Reddam basketball players were involved in the AICES Basketball tournament and did the

school proud by playing well. Standout of the day and unanimously (voted by all the Reddam

kids) the MVP of the day went to Cooper Child. Cooper was the smallest player in the tourna-

ment and played against boys double his size but scored the most baskets of any player in the

game. Both refs made a positive comments about him. Good job Cooper!

The Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9 students have been issued their Final Examination Guides in hard

copy. This document includes their timetable, study tips, examination policies, subject exam notifi-

cations and pointers to manage exam stress. This document should be the students “bible” as they

prepare for the upcoming Yearly Examinations.

Have a great week ahead,

Dave Pitcairn

For the past few months, the students of Year 7 history have been getting acquainted with their in-

ner archaeologists and exploring the ancient world of ancient Egypt. From the pharaoh's power

and ancient hieroglyphics to the barter economy and importance of the Nile, Year 7 have diligent-

ly researched and investigated the entombed secrets of ancient Egypt along with all the lessons

we can learn from them. This past week some Year 7 even got to mummify one another in a series

of lessons that could easily be described as gross, spiritual, forensic and enlightening… we also had

a lot of fun too. From here they prepare for the cycle and end of year revision but from myself; a

reasonably new teacher to the school I would like to thank every Year 7 student that participated

in the mummification lesson and congratulate them all for their continued effort in every single les-

son.

As Year 12 Drama embarks on the process of choosing their Individual Project for the HSC, along-

side many other school groups the students spent the day on Tuesday with industry professionals in

their chosen area – the solo performance. The students began the day listening to a keynote ad-

dress from an industry practitioner who shared with them her own experiences and offered advice

to the students as emerging young artists. The group then immersed themselves in practical work-

shops for the rest of the day. The Reddam students joined a group from Santa Sabina College and

together they explored techniques and approaches that would help them take charge of their

projects from the outset.

This was an energising and stimulating way to kick start the creative process so that they can ap-

proach their work with confidence, control and imagination. I’m sure our students are set for great

success!
