Final Point Score:

My thanks to Mr. Kable and the Sport’s Staff for organ-

izing this sporting opportunity for the students.

Monday Evening's Composition Competition heard

the airing of a number of HSC submitted works that

are nearing completion. It was an ideal time for our

adjudicator Matthew Hindson to hear them and make

suggestions on improvements.

Matthew was very impressed with our younger com-

posers who presented in the Junior Section of the

Competition. He awarded 3rd Place to Jake Bauer,

2nd Place to Thomas Carlisle and 1st Place to Gerard

Buttigieg. Matthew was particularly fulsome about

Gerard’s song stating that if he continued in this vein

he could easily have a career in writing music.

In the Senior Section there were a range of works pre-

sented from Year 10 through to HSC and Matthew

encouraged our students toward the consideration

of study at the Conservatorium in Composition on the

evidence of their ability. Matthew awarded a Highly

Commended to Martin Dreyer for his piano composi-

tion 'All the Same' and to Isabelle Hamby for her song

'Wheels are Turning'. 3rd Place went to Joe Newton

for his impressive Piano Concerto chamber reduction,

2nd Place to Christopher Hirshman for his Gorecki

Sarcred Minimalist inspired work 'The Sacred Calm

Disturbed'. 1st Place was awarded to Liam Strang for

his 'Cloud 9'. Both Christopher and Liam have chosen

Composition as a major for HSC Music 2 and it was

pleasing that Matthew would accept them into a

composition course at the Conservatorium on the

basis of their work for HSC.

Sam Katz and Isaac May entered the Cetus 3D print-

ing competition in the July holidays where they had to

design and make an enclosure for a 3D printer. This

followed a 3D modelling/printing unit in Design and

Technology this year and Ms. Bambach is exceptional-

ly proud to report that they won the Cetus Choice

Prize, winning a brand new 3D printer. Being a global,

open (all-ages) competition makes this success even

more commendable.

Congratulations to Connor

Garratt who has been select-

ed to represent the Sydney

Rays Rugby Team for the 2017

Junior Gold Cup in Septem-

ber. A massive achievement:

well done Connor.

Last weekend Yonatan Freund competed in the National

Karate Championships. This is the largest Karate tourna-

ment in Australia, with over 200 competitors, each repre-

senting their State. Yonatan finished the event with 2

gold and one silver medal. He won the Male Cadet

Open, against 41 other competitors. He also won the

Team event, where each state picks their top fighters

and they compete together against the other states. In

his third event, he lost the final of his own division, giving

him the silver medal. Congratulations Yonatan and good

luck with your training for the World Championships in

October.

Important Events next week include:

1. The HSC Music Showcase in Adelaide Hall at 7:00pm

on Monday evening.

2. Year 7 – Year 9 ICAS Mathematics on Tuesday.

3. Year 11 (2018) Subject Selection evening at the Bon-

di Campus on Tuesday evening.

4. The Concerto Competition in Adelaide Hall on

Wednesday evening.

5. The HSC Dance Final Practical Examinations on

Thursday and Friday.

Have a good week,

Dave Pitcairn

PUBLIC SPEAKING NEWS

Over the past few weeks, our students from Years 7 - 10

(and one Year 6 student!) have been very busy pre-

paring for various Public Speaking competitions.

The Sydney Eisteddfod is a wonderful opportunity for

any student who wants to hone their skills in front of an

audience - and our Reddam students proved that they

are among the best in Sydney.

From prepared speeches to impromptu speeches, our

students all performed to a very high standard, ensur-

ing that they engaged with their audiences; they

paused, used gestures, spoke clearly and loudly and

their messages were clear, refreshing and inspirational.

It was particularly pleasing to see the improvement of

students as they have progressed over the years - and

special mention to all the Year 10 students who gave

outstanding performances, demonstrating that they

have not lost their touch.

Congratulations to all those students who participated

- cliched and overused as the expression is, the experi-

ence has really made you even better speakers.

Special congratulations to the following award win-

ners:

LEGACY PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION

In the NSW Department of Education run competition,

two of our students, Zoe Gross and Emily Wang went

off two weeks ago to Maroubra to compete against

some of the finest speakers in NSW in the first round of

the Legacy Public Speaking Competition.

The competition is comprised of a 6 minute prepared

speech and a two-minute impromptu speech and

while both Emily and Zoe were superb, Zoe was chosen

to move through to the regional finals on 15 August.

Well done Zoe - a wonderful achievement.

WORLD CHALLENGE TRAINING EXPEDITION

THE GREAT NORTH WALK

Last weekend 42 students and teachers went to Horns-

by to complete a preparation hike for our community

service trip. Looking back at the trip, it was a crazy ex-

pedition that was filled with lots of memories, bonding,

effective management and most important of all, fun.

As a team, we have successfully communicated to

overcome many obstacles and challenges including

the freezing temperature at dusk. Planning and shop-

ping to get our food for the whole team was the first

task. As a team we had to keep in mind the variety of

dietary requirements and choose the easiest option on

preparing the food having limited equipment.

In addition to the food being scarce and difficult to pre-

pare in challenging circumstances, our team had to

carry the food in our 15kg backpacks, while hiking and

navigating through a 15km trek and hike through differ-

ent trails. As we arrived to the camping grounds we had

to put up tents which seemed to be a challenging ex-

perience for many of us, but we pulled through and

had an amazing night.

Overall this whole trip was an amazing experience for

everyone. It was full of laughs, challenges and team-

work through the whole trip and we all have amazing

memories. The team is now prepared and ready for our

amazing trip overseas.

MATHS NEWS

2017 ICAS Competition in Mathematics Next Tuesday!!!

All students in Years 7, 8 and 9 will sit for the 2017 ICAS competition in Mathematics on Tuesday August 15th. The students are asked to be in their correct rooms by 8.40 am for this one hour test.

It will take a little time for each student to complete their details on the answer sheet so we should be able to get this done before 8.55. After the competition the students will go straight to period 3.

There is an opportunity for students to practice on line for this competition. Simply google “ICAS practice

questions” and follow the link to Mathematics. Year 7

should do Paper E, Year 8 do paper F and Year 9 do paper G. Note that the Year 7 students are not al-lowed to use a calculator. It will cost $5.50 to open an account but I feel it is a wonderful investment to assist students with their preparation for this important com-petition.

Best wishes to all participants.

REDDAM HOUSE FOOTBALL

Open Boys v St Patricks

The first half of this game was a joy to watch. Playing into the teeth of a howling gale, we sensibly kept the ball on the ground and played some free flowing one and two touch football to create numerous chances. The 6-0 score line at half time was an accurate reflec-tion of how well the boys played. The second half was a more subdued affair with the opposition lifting their game. Goal scorers for us were Tobi Fox with four, James Azzi, a revelation on the left wing, with two and one each to Kieran and Eric. I think Keiran is a short prized favourite for the most improved player of the year award.

Another memorable moment was the debut of inter-national student Jaime Martin of Year 11.

Jamie hails from Zaragoza in Spain and needless to say he learnt his football at Real Zaragoza who play in Spain’s second tier domestic competition. And to cap

a good day out, we headed to Auburn after the game for lunch and the best HSP in Sydney.

INTRODUCTION

The Reddam Debating Society is an open social debating competition between

students in years 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11. The aim is to provide an opportunity for students to mix and discuss policy ideas on how to best build a brighter future.

Each debate surrounds a motion on a way in which society should change, and the

winning team gets to establish their policy as the consensus position for the society.

Students are given 20 minutes of intensive coaching followed by three 30 minute rounds of debating. Music and food consumption are encouraged in a relaxed social atmosphere that

is ideal for beginners and experts.

Students need only bring a device to type on or writing materials, and an eagerness to argue. The aim of the championship is to solve real world problems with students being given the

freedom to approach every problem however they choose; the only limit being peer feed-back.

WHO CAN ENTER?

Open to students from any school

Open to both individuals & pre-formed teams
