Dear Parents/ Caregivers, Congratulations to our latest TV stars, George Susman, Savanna Chilchik, Jared Sapsford and Mishka Ivanovic who appeared on Pyramid Series 7 on Monday morning on Channel GO.

Charlie Jeong is going through a purple patch at the moment, being part of the Fencing Team that won the National Schools title last week and this week being selected to attend the National Youth Science Forum to be held in Perth in February 2014. His nomination was supported by the Rotary Club of Bondi Junction. Students interested in film making who would like to attend the launch of the REELise Project (see flyer in newsletter) must see Mr. Johnson to book a place. For further info, the website is www.reelise.org.au. The first Reddam House Composition Competition was a genuine success. More than that, it demonstrated the depth of compositional talent present in the school. The adjudicator, Alex Pozniak was delighted by varied compositional offerings of our students. In the Intermediate Section he awarded 3

rd Place to Violet Barber for her song

‘Tears’; 2nd

Place was awarded to Lucia Hamdorf for her song ‘Painter’; and 1st Place

was awarded to Liam Strang for his solo piano work ‘Finger Fusion’. The Senior Section was well represented from Year 9 through to the HSC Music 2 composition course component – all of the pieces were written for String Quartet. We were very fortunate to be joined by Acacia String Quartet to perform these works and to have them recorded for submission to the Board of Studies in September. Highly Commended Certificates were awarded to Oscar Gross for his song ‘Leaves’; Seth Gabrielsson for his Composition for classical guitar; Ford Miskin for his solo piano work ‘Nocturne Under the Stars’; Luke Fabian for his String Quartet in D minor; and Gigi Li for her String Quartet ‘Macabre Waltz’. Zak Hamieri was awarded 3rd Place for his String Quartet; 2

nd Place went to Indyana Schneider for her composition ‘El Tango

del Sorpresas’; and 1st Prize went to Alex Buckley for his String Quartet.

Congratulations to Bryana Bailey in Year 8 for her outstanding performance of Birdies’ "People Help The People" at the City of Penrith Vocal Eisteddfod for which she was awarded 2nd place! Parents and students are reminded of Open Day next Sunday (25

Last Saturday six Reddam House teams played in the Grand Finals in the Sydney Comets Basketball competition. The 10s boys were first up and the played a great match but unfortunately went down on the buzzer, 22 – 23. Our 12s boys played a great team game to take out their Grand Final 32 – 27. Our 12s girls had a tough battle and were in the game to the dying seconds but unfortunately went down 24 – 26. Up stepped our 14s girls who fought hard to take out their match 21 – 19. The 14s boys Grand Final was yet another tight tussle with the match going into overtime. Our boys stayed strong during the overtime and took the crown by winning 45 – 39. The last match was our 18s boys who played their semi final at 3.00pm followed by the Final at 6.00pm. We won the semi comfortably but unfortunately got dusted in the Final 48 – 31 by a very good Saints Team. As can be seen by the close scores it was a great day of basketball. Congratulations to all of our players and coaches for ding such a wonderful job.

Last Thursday certainly wasn’t a day for the faint hearted. Rain, strong winds and Sydney’s coldest day in the last two years made it quite challenging for our competitors in the Reddam Athletics Championships. Regardless of the conditions there were some outstanding performances and a great deal of fun was had by those who contributed to the success of the day. Bennelong ran out convincing winners with Darling in second, Macquarie third and Piper bringing up the rear. On Wednesday 8th August, the Year 7 French students had the opportunity to enjoy

and exciting and fun-filled LOTE Theatre French play called ‘La bouillabaisse et la Marseillaise’.

Performed by the dynamic French actress Anna Jahjah, it’s a mix of exciting and culturally rich tales about her home-town: the fascinating city of Marseille. The city that is due to be Capitale Européenne de la culture in 2013. Here is what some of the students had to say about La Bouillabaisse et la Marseillaise: ‘It was very enjoyable for all ages and super funny. It was great because she translated everything from French to English so we learnt a lot of new words’ Natasha Caroll

The term multiculturalism was coined in the 1970’s when Australia appeared to be ahead of the world in pioneering the integration of migrants into its society with ease. By showing respect to their national and linguistic heritage, multiculturalism was providing support for their assimilation into the Australian way of life. Yet, it is important to realize that newcomers were to be of white race and of “good quality”. The situation, began to change with the arrival of boat people from Vietnam, Cam-bodia and other Asian countries. The appearance of these people was at odds with the stereotype of the “right type” of migrant, bringing the effectiveness of multicultur-alism into question. Finally, the absorption of people from Middle Eastern countries, gave rise to a wave of racial stigmatization. With its high living standard and geographical distance from centers of conflict worldwide, the vision of Australia as a haven for persecuted people was only an illu-sion. In fact, Muslim people were viewed with suspicion and it therefore comes as no surprise that their integration into Australia’s society was beset with difficulties. Their knowledge of English was poor and professional skills in demand were lack-ing. Moreover, their cultural background and commitment to the Muslim faith made it difficult for Muslims as migrants to come to terms with the secular, “happy go lucky’ way of life of the Australians. To make matters worse, Australians were not inclined to view the Muslim way of life with sympathy. This brought on “Islamophobia”, a false premise against Muslims. Furthermore, some politicians were hostile towards Muslim refugees when objecting to costs of illegal immigration to be funded by tax payers. Scott Morrison, the shad-ow spokesman for immigration, objected to paying airfare to surviving members of the maritime disaster off Christmas Island, to enable them to attend funerals of their relatives. What bothers politicians most is the perception of the rise of “Muslim extremism” in Australia. To take control of the situation, the government put in place a project, on the basis of which sixteen selected individuals were to undergo training to become leaders of the Muslim community. In this way, it was anticipated, that acts of terror-ism could be prevented. The project, costing one million dollars, was the brainchild of Robert McClellan, the Attorney General in the Howard government. Yet, it was clear that the initiative was a product of Islamophobia, aimed at denigrating mem-bers of the Muslim community. Australia's racism, dating back to its early European settlement and its “white Australia policy”, remains ingrained in the Australian char-acter. Our understanding of Islam and the Arabs is obscure and wrought with misconcep-tions. Unfortunately, Muslim extremism and the “War on Terror” set the standard for condemning the entire Muslim community for crimes that it did not commit. The fact that the majority of Australia’s Muslims are benevolent people, had never been tak-en into consideration. It is, therefore, important not to lose sight of this reality, not to exclude them from our society and thus keep the noble spirit of multiculturalism alive. Raphael Masters Year 7

ENGLISH POETRY YEAR 8

D O E students! I have provisionally booked a very exciting practice trip for the 4

th to the 6

th October.

The trip is called a pack and paddle trip. Following is a basic description of what you will be doing: Make your way to Kangaroo valley (I can organize a bus if there are enough

numbers, but carpooling is probably the best option to keep the cost down)

Once at Kangaroo Valley (meet the group and organize yourselves) you canoe (while enjoying the views and company) to your camp site pitch your tent and relax for the evening (campfire songs optional!!)

The next morning fresh as a daisy, you up roots and walk with a spring in your

step to your next destination and set up camp again that evening. (That night I would suggest card games-the campfire songs can get a bit annoying!!)

The next morning, ready for more-you canoe to your final destination where

your loving parents will be waiting to truck your happy but slightly weary bodies home for a lovely big dinner and cozy sleep!

The camp stove, tents, fuel, canoe, buoyancy aids etc. will all be supplied. If you do not have waterproof jackets and trousers-these can be hired. It should be a really fun trip and a bit more interesting than the usual hiking. I have booked a Practice Silver trip for 14 students– so first come first served. However de-pending on how numbers work out-I may have to change it to Gold (extra day) If any of your friends are interested in doing this trip and/or The Duke Of Ed-let me know and I’ll get them signed up!
