Friday 10th February 2017

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The annual Year Group Parent Information sessions

started this week with Year 10, Year 9 and Year 11 on

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings respec-

tively.

I enjoyed being able to brag about the wonderful 2016

HSC achievements and introduce the team of teach-

ers who will be caring for your children this year.

All enjoyed the opportunity to get together and con-

nect with parents of children in the same year as their

own. The discussions with the parents of your children’s

friends allows for common strategies in dealing with the

perennial issues faced by all parents specific to their

children’s age.

Paul Dillon whose presentation to the Year 9 parents

can be found on his website darta.net.au was well re-

ceived and provided many useful parenting tips. As the

Director and founder of DARTA, he is passionate about

ensuring that the community has access to accurate

and up-to-date alcohol and drug related statistics and

information.

The nurses from NSW Health were very impressed with

this year’s Year 7 students who had their vaccinations

for Human Papillomavirus Vaccine (HPV) and Diphthe-

ria, Tetanus & Pertussis (dTpa) on Tuesday. The event,

because it involves injections, can be associated with

much hysterics and drama. This year they were stoic

and brave and got the job done without too much

fuss. Well done Year 7.

The Year 8 and Year 9 students have a Resilience and

Anxiety workshop today, which aims to motivate stu-

dents to achieve a growth mindset, a vital ingredient to

maintaining a positive attitude to learning, to reducing

anxiety, bolstering resilience and fostering peak perfor-

mance.

Dr. Jodie Lowinger, the presenter, is the Managing Di-

rector of Mind Strength, a coaching and consulting firm

that works closely with schools to help students attain

peak performance personally, academically and pro-

fessionally by providing leading edge, practical strate-

gies to treat anxiety, stress, worry and other emotional

and behavioural challenges.

We are also collaborating with the University of Sydney,

to better understand the role of emotional awareness

on wellbeing and to trial a new resilience building pro-

gram (WISE Teens) with the Year 9 students during their

PDHPE lessons.

The Year 12 Art students have left for their retreat to the

MONA Museum in Hobart. We look forward to their

feedback in next week’s newsletter.

This week we congratulate Tali Heyman-Griffiths who has

been elected as one of 8 Youth Leaders for the Inner

West Youth Leadership Council.

Next week the Valentine’s dance will be held on Mon-

day night from 6:00pm – 9:00pm and as the proceeds go

towards the Reddam International Community Service

Project we encourage all Middle School students to at-

tend. It will also be incredible fun.

Have a great week,

Dave Pitcairn
