Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The rain for the last few weeks has played havoc with

scheduled activities. It is quite something to look at a

weather forecast for the week ahead and be faced

with the prospect of more rain. It has been this way for

three weeks now and the first glimmer of a sun looks like

being next weekend. So another wet weekend and

week ahead. That will not deter us from hosting Open

day on Sunday where all the classrooms will be open

and teachers and students available to chat to pro-

spective parents. The programme of events on the day

is included in this newsletter. The day starts at 10:00am

and runs until 2:00pm. The canteen will be open and we

invite all Reddam families to bring friends and family

along who might be interested in seeing what sets Red-

dam apart.

Last Sunday we hosted a very successful Scholarship

Day for 177 students. 150 of those are Year 6 students

interested in coming to Reddam in Year 7 next year. My

thanks to all involved in this day, in particular Alex

Crundwell who coordinates the entire process.

On Monday Paul Dillon visited the school to deliver his

valuable workshops on drugs and alcohol. As the lead-

ing commentator in this field, Paul’s message is always

well received by the Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12 stu-

dents. As the director and founder of DARTA (Drug and

Alcohol Research and Training Australia) he aims to pro-

vide education and training expertise as well as high

quality research assistance on a wide range of alcohol

and other drug issues. He is passionate about ensuring

that the community has access to accurate and up-to-

date alcohol and other drug information. His website:

http://darta.net.au has all his resources for parents and

students to make use of.

What a fantastic weekend it was for our debating

teams who hosted Cranbrook at Reddam. Years 7, 10,

and 11 won their debates on Friday night, with the 8's

and 9's doing a superb job. Ms. Guinea is very proud of

the students involved. Keep up the good work against

SCEGGS, who host us this Friday evening.

The 2017 Piano Competition on Monday proved to be

an outstanding evening of performances. We were

joined by Elisabeth Jacobs as our adjudicator. Elisabeth

was the adjudicator for our first Piano Competition in

2012 and it was great to have her back. She was very

impressed with the standard of performance right across

the school and particularly students' memory work. Elisa-

beth also commented on the rare level of confidence

exhibited by our students, stating that it was wonderful

indeed to see so many young musicians presenting

themselves so professionally.

The Intermediate Section was also tight with some excel-

lent and diverse performances, including some Boogie

Piano, Film Music reduction and Highly Commended

Certificates were awarded to Sammy Shafir and Tyler

Davis, whilst Third Place went to Daniel Zhang; Second

Place to Edward Ye; and First Place to Geraldine Yang.

The final Section of the evening, Year 10 to 12, delivered

an outstanding display of pianistic skills, again with a

range of repertoire styles. Elisabeth had trouble separat-

ing Third Place and so awarded duel medallists - Kai

Mashimo and Joseph Newton. Second Place was

awarded to Liam Strang and First Place to Amber Chen.

Student achievements this week include:

Alisa Tyshchenko competed in her first Open com-

petition last weekend in Canberra, the ACT State

Championships. She continued her winning ways

and was awarded the Gold medal.

Bec Peisah attended the NSW Schools Constitutional

Convention at NSW Parliament on last year and has

been selected to participate in the National Schools

Constitutional Convention in Canberra (NSCC) from

15 – 17 March 2017. What a great opportunity for

her. Here she is being introduced to Lady Cosgrove

before heading off to the High Court. Bec is the per-

fect ambassador for Reddam and I know she will

make the most of this fantastic opportunity.

Today the Well-being portfolio have organised a well-

being assembly. The focus will be on mental health and

they have organised a panel of guest speakers to pre-

sent on this very important issue facing us all. Ellis, the

driving force behind the initiative, is to be congratulat-

ed on providing the students an opportunity to talk

about common issues faced by them.

Have a good week,

Dave Pitcairn

YEAR 10 DRAMA

This week Mr. Hodgson's Year 10 Drama students took

part in a fun 2 hour workshop with Puppetry expert Kay

Yasugi. The students enjoyed learning both how to make

and manipulate puppets for theatrical performances.

They will use this knowledge in their Drama Assessments

when they present a Children's Theatre Performance for

the Primary School in week 9 of this term. Well done Year

10 Drama students and thank you Kay Yasugi for impart-

ing your knowledge.

DEBATING

Last Friday, 10th March, Reddam hosted Cranbrook for

the second debate of the Eastside Competition. The

topic was religion and society. Congratulations to our

Year 7, 10 and 11 teams for their victories, and for all

teams putting on some excellent debates. Special

recognition should also be given to all our new debaters

who put on a wonderful display and did Reddam

proud. If any Year 12 students are interested in debating

for Reddam this year, please do not hesitate to get in

contact with [email protected].

Reddam House Student Exchange Program

We Need Host Families Urgently Dear Reddam Community

Based on a reciprocal exchange, we have 3 Year 10 boys from Cleveland Ohio, that are very keen to come

across to Reddam Sydney from the 20th May 2017 to the 11th June 2017. We are looking for 3 families that

would be prepared to consider this opportunity to host the boys. At this point, this request is not exclusive to

Year 10. These American families have confirmed that they are prepared to host your child for a cultural

emersion in term 4 of this year.

Our student exchange program is starting to gather momentum. We have a number of exchange opportuni-

ties that are now available to our Year 10 students each year. These exchanges can run for as little as 3

weeks, up to a term in duration. They are normally reciprocal in nature, with a student from the host school

spending time in your home and attending Reddam House Sydney. There are also opportunities within the

Reddam Schools abroad, to have a boarding experience without reciprocity. We have had students travel to

South Africa, America, France, Spain, England, Italy and Sweden in the past.

Please contact me if :

1.You would like to be considered as a host family

2. You would like your child to participate in an exchange in Year 10
