SPAGHETTI STRUCTURE

Our goal of this project is to manipulate linear matarials to discover their structuralpotential.Investigate stereotomatic and tectonic construction methods for this project. We started making a hydrocal egg and developing a spaghetti structure at least 16” tall to hold the egg on the top where at least 5 point on the tectonic structure must touch the egg. We also explore the relationship between structure and object. The structure is self supported.

DOCUMENTATION OF MARINE A (PART 1)

In architecture, the ability to survey an existing object or place is imperative. Geometry, composition and proportions greatly affect any design investigation.We started our project with documentaing an existing building Mairine A (one f thebuffalo’s historical grain elevators) within silo city. We employ various documentation techniques including historical reasearch. photography and on-site measuring in or-der to complete this project. Every student was assigned a specific area to document among Marine A grain elevator by the faculty.

In arhitecture, the ability to survey an existing object or place is imperative. In order to fully understand of the object or an existing condition one must gain a throughundertading of the geometry, composition and proportions which govern theseconditions. We started making tonal drawing of our specific elevation, section and plan. After that we combine all plan, sections and elevations as a group by using Photoshop. We develop our skills on how to work together and get everything done on time.

MOVEMENT AND STORAGE

Grain elevators are the ideal structure for the storage and movement of grain. Thebuffalo grain elevators were designed to increase the speed with which grain could be transferred from boat to barge. The goal of this project is to draw a section oblique of whole Marine A elevator and draw a diagram about movement of grain and peoplethrough whole Marine A with site context. We made our research and analysis of the grain movement and people. then we draw a diagram of it by using Illustrator.

RESIDENCE FOR JIM(PART 1)

Our final project is about to create a living/working space for Jim Watkins who lives a simple life. He shares his living space with his dog named champ, in the Marine A. I n Part 1 we focused on Jim’e postural needs(lying, sitting and standing) and Jim’s stor-ages needs. From the beginning of the project i started thinking about the human curve that Jim creates everytime when he is lying, sitting or standing position. I try to utilize that human curve to create his postural needs by cheap board.

RESIDENCE FOR JIM(PART 2)

Second part of this project is about to create a living environment for Jim in our specific area of the Marine A that we are assigned in our previous project. My idea is to create a living environment for jim by manipulating light and shadow through the silo. I break-down my storage material(5 cars) in a small part. I organize the glass door on top of the silo, So the sunlight will reflect and refract into the silo. And will create a light composi-tion inside. By using all the tires and wire components i create a platform in the middle of the silo where i placed my sitting poture. As i want jim to sit here and watch the outside and take fresh air. After that all 5 cars create another platform for lying posture. I want to give jim a wonderful environment where he will lay down and watch thecomposition of light and shadow on top of the silo and sleep tight.

In our media class, we learn how to draw different types of drawing. We learn how to sketch, How to draw axonometric, Isometric, and section oblique. We also learn how to create different pattern by using latter.

EXPERIENCING SPACE

Our project goal is to find a space where we will feel comfortable or the space gives us somekind of feelings. The space should have strong characteristic like brightness, proportion, materiality, smell, acoustic, temperature, humidity, air movement, symbol-ism, publicness, privateness, view connections and many more. It doesn’t matter the space is designed by an architect or not. The space should be in Buffalo and should have easy excess. We should be able to experience that space everyday in our life. The space shouldn’t exceed a volume of 20ftx20ftx20ft and shouldn’t smaller than approx. 12ftx12ftx12ft. We need to describe our perticular experience of that space by an word. We have to document that space and analyze how the space achieved this strong im-pression on us.

I started my project with different pictures that i took on Downtown Buffalo. I define all those space by different word and describe my first feelings about that space. After all that i choose one picture which i defined “Invitation”.

INVITATION

This is a visitor entrance for Buffalo convention center. Every time I pass by this space it gives me the feelings of attraction. It offers me a suggestion to visit this space. Doors always provide invitation. But the way they subtract or curve away that part creates spatial tension between path and the space. It provides encouragement to the viewers to explore the space. It creates a visual relationship between viewer’s eye and the space.

SURVEY OF SPACE

Architecture is a graphic language. Drawing of buildings serve numerous perposes in architecture. The objective of this task is translating and abstracting the space you choose in previous project into the graphic language of architecture. We started using autocad software to draw plan, elevation and section of our space. We took the measurements carefully.

POSITIVE-NEGATIVE INVERSION OF SPACEWe started this phase with making mass model out of foam which represents the basic, overall volume of our space. We use hot-wire foam cutter to make a very clean edge model. We are also introduced to the process of casting. We cast our mass model. We learn how to make cottle board. We also learn how to work with plaster gauze. We learn how to work with foam cutter, mass modeling, spatial thinking andpositive-negative inversion.After casting the foam model, I got 4 different mould pieces. I draw a one-point perspec-tive view of my mould pieces. I took individual picture of my foam model and 4 individual mould pieces.

In this phase we started combining our mould pieces to create a house. Considering each of this mould pieces as a room or a space-entailing volumes, we started desiging our house. We also recieved a site which is the base board(20”x20”) of our cottle board create a slope of 25 degree.My idea is to create invitation in my house. As the space that i choose earier has a long stairscase on it, I decided to take inpiration from it and I create a long staircase from the street to the house. A 46 ft long sloppy staircase will automatically draw viewersattention. As you pass by the entrance you will see half concrete-half glass floor, from where you can see”Excellency” a metalic sculpture. Which is the best piece of mine.You can not see the full view of that sculpture. If you want see it, You have to come inside. I am not forcing spectators to go inside of this building but teasing them to create a feeling of curiosity in their mind. And this is what my invitation to the spectators. All the openings are inspired from the foam model.

SPACE AND STRUCTURE

This is the last project of our semester. It is a group project. Members are S.M.A. SAYAM, Karim Mahmood, Ali elhaddad, Chritian anthony urena, Jackson Lim, Micheal hehrir. We have to create a thin shell structure by the given material. As we got wire as our material. We started casting I-sheped column by wire.From two different types of grid(2”/3”) we choose to work with 3”grid. Because we found it more flexible, durable and ilastic. As wire has a characteristic of bending, we started making longer span from 2 ft to 8 ft. Our concept is based on that I-shaped column. We thought it would be interesting to manipulate the linearity of the original I-shaped column in our molded structures so we cross-braced the copper rods in the molding process itself, which allowed us to twist and curve the two molded beams into different shapes. The shape of the curves them-selves is not completely arbitrary, but is determined by the site in a way that best utilizes the proximal points of possible connectivity. Since the original I-columns in studio sup-port a wall that allows us to display our work and drawings, we decided that the skin be-tween our two I-beams should have a similar function. Our space is therefore an archive that allows us to isolate the critics from the rest of the studio and display our work.
