8 000 000 consecutive fatality free man shifts. Now themine is aiming to continue to lead the industry in injuryprevention and beyond as it strives towrds reaching 9 000 000fatality free shifts towards the end of March 2012.

All employees and contractors at Modikwa have over thepast 63 months continuously worked with safety as their firstand foremost concern, in doing so they have converted their“Passion” into this wonderful achievement, thus ensuring thatany person who works at Modikwa can honestly say that theywill return home to their families and loved ones at the end oftheir shift without harm.

They say now that they have achieved eight millionfatality free shifts, their greatest challenge is to work harder tomaintain consistent improvement.

According to Modikwa an achievement of this nature is theresult of dedicated leadership, unconditional commitment fromthe labour organizations and sustained effort on the part ofeveryone on the mine, and is a justifiable cause for pride andsatisfaction. Every employee and contractor deserves thehighest praise for their conscious effort to preserve safety inthe mine and that of their fellow workers, saying in a statementfrom the mine “Through this achievement we are continuing toset a benchmark for the platinum mining industry! It is throughempathy and teamwork from our Management team andLabour representatives in ensuring our core ideology of Caringfor our people, and the full commitment of our employees andcontractors to our total compliance safety strategies, coupledto the dedication shown by them towards the elimination ofunsafe acts and conditions that has pushed us beyond what iscommonly accepted as the unreachable and made thispossible, and the vision of Zero injuries achievable. The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM)has rejected a 5,5% wage offer from theworld ‘s number two platinum producer,Impala Platinum earlier this week.

NUM demands a 14 per cent wageincrement for lower categories and a 13, 5%wage increment for higher categories. Theunion further demands all these on a oneyear deal whilst Impala argues for a threeyear deal with inflation plus one percent onyear two and year three. “We are extremelydisappointed with such proposals, 5,5% is ano-no for us, a three year deal is not even aconsideration for us” says EddieMajadibodu, the NUM ‘s Chief Negotiator atImpala Platinum. The union is demanding aone-year deal, while Implats is motivating fora three-year deal with inflation plus 1%increases in the second and third years. “Weare extremely disappointed with suchproposals, 5.5% is a no-no for us and a

three year deal is not even a consideration,”Majadibodu said.

NUM was set to continue with itsengagement with Impala Platinum to try andfind an amicable solution. “If they want us tomarshal our forces, they must just tell usrather than send us from pillar to post” saysMajadibodu.

The National Union of Mineworkers isdetermined to ensure that workers get aliving wage out of the 2011 wagenegotiations.

“We are approaching our 30th yearanniversary and it cannot be right that in 30years of our existence we still havecompanies that pay our workers peanuts”says Majadibodu.

NUM also said it will demand a pay riseof 20% on basic wages when it begins itsnegotiations with world number-oneplatinum producer Anglo American Platinum.

Negotiations was set to start earlier thisweek.

NUM deputy general secretary OupaKomane said on Tuesday that the unionbelieved that its wage demands from AngloAmerican Platinum were “not onlyreasonable, but also reachable”. “We arequite hopeful that we are not going to benegotiating forever. We should meet once,or twice and then agree,” he said in astatement.

Besides an above-inflation wage hike, the NUM is also demanding that thecompany extend its thirteenth cheque to allworkers, increase its medical aidcontribution to R2 000 a month and convertits hostels to family units. On leave, theNUM is demanding seven months fully-paidmaternity leave, family responsibility leave of15 days and study leave of three daysbefore examination.

During the past week, thieves targeted at least three central Burgersfort businesses.According to local security company Protect Security, Supa Save supermarket wastargeted on 19 June.

According to the security company this thieves in this case allegedly made use ofwomen who befriended security guards posted at this business and other businessesin the immediate vicinity and offered them cold drinks to drink. The company saysthese drinks must have been spiked, because it rendered guards incapable to do theirwork.

Thieves then gained access to the premises through a window. The alarm wastriggered, but quickly restored by the intruders. The security company, however, hadenough time to react. On the premises a bag with various tools, such as a grinderwith discs was found as if the intruders were on their way to cut open a safe.Unfortunately the thieves fled and nobody was arrested.

On 20 June someone tried to gain access to Mega Paints through a roll-up doorand security gate at the back of the building. The individuals could in this case notsucceed in entering the building and nothing was stolen. As with Supa Save, nobodywas arrested.

On 21 June thieves targeted Vision Meat. They gained access to the premisesafter overpowering the guard and breaking through the wall. The safe was openedwith explosives and they fled with the safe’s contents.

What will the effect of nationalisation be?

Mr Dennis Dikotope said: “When Malematakes over we will have moreopportunities for jobs. We, the youth aretaking Malema’s advice and will prefer ifhe takes over government. The economywill grow because there will be morejobs. Large companies will not leave thecountry. They will come up withsomething to work together. They cannotjust pull out. A solution is alwayseverywhere”.

Me. Maria Tebele sê: “Die mense sal meerwerk kry as hulle nasionaliseer. Ek dinkwat Malema wil hê sal nog gebeur”.

Mr Isaac Maphake said: “I believe whatMalema wants will happen. The economywill grow because government will runeverything better than the privatecompanies”.

Mr Lucky Sello and Mr Janson Machipa said: “It will be good if it happens becausemore people will find jobs. Government will employ more people than the privatecompanies”.

Mnr.

Me. Wilna Volschenk sê: “Dit sal nie goed wees as dit gebeur nie. Buitelandsebeleggers sal onttrek as dit deurgevoer word”. By haar is Chanelle en Yoné.

Mr Desmond Zitha said: “No, I don’t thinkMalema’s threats will happen in reality. Ifit happens the owners of businesses willrun away and go make businesssomewhere else”.

Me Maureen Knoetze sê: “Grootmaatskappye sal definitief uit Suid-Afrikaonttrek as hulle begin nasionaliseer enonteien. Dit sal ‘n gemors wees. Dieongeluk is dat daar so baie keer virmense leë beloftes oor werk gemaakword”.

Mr Isaac Dikotope said: “I believe whatMalema wants will happen. It will be good.We believe everyone will then have ajob”.

Mr Paul Nxumalo said: “I believe they willnationalize the mines, farms and banks.People who are not working, will maybeget jobs and that will be good for theeconomy”.

Last weekend at the national conference forthe ANC Youth League, Mr Julius Malemaagain called for the nationalisation of themines, banks and the expropriation of farms. This week Mining Weekly reported that well-known mining lawyer, Mr Peter Leon, considers full-blown nationalisation as one ofthe worst things for mineworkers. He said: “The R52-billion that was wiped offthe Johannesburg Stock exchange (JSE) in72 hours when the Mining Charter wasleaked in 2002 will look like a ‘storm in ateacup’ compared with the adoption of full-blown nationalisation of South Africa’s miningindustry”. He warned that mineworkers’pension funds are widely invested in the JSE.According to the latest report from the Centrefor Development and Entrepreneurship(CDE), South Africa will have to findalternatives to grow the economy and reduceunemployment. The report states that SouthAfrica has the lowest recorded employmentgrowth record in the world. Only 41% ofSouth Africans between 16 and 64 are doingany type of work. In developed countries 60%of adults are working. In China they have a70% employment rate and in Brazil andIndonesia 65%.The CDE suggests that employment can beincreased without the threshhold of aminimum income. They take the textileindustry in Newcastle as an example.Workers were prepared to earn less, as longas they earn something. Minimum incomeregulations forced many factories in the areato close and leave hundreds of workersunemployed. Many of these workers areunschooled an find it difficult to find workelsewhere. We asked readers if they believe thatnationalisation will happen and what theythink the affect on the economy will be?
