WALTER SCOTT’S

WALTER SCOTT ASKS ...

STEVE HARVEYThe comedian, author, radio personality and talk-show host, 58, emcees the syndicated game show Family Feud and now Celebrity Family Feud, which airs its final summer episode tonight on ABC.Why do people love Family Feud? “They’re games that everybody can play. Everybody can be right at any given time. Everybody loves to hear what someone else thinks under pressure.”

What is it that makes you so relatable as a host? “My wit is very quick, and I can talk to the common person who’s never been on TV and put them at ease, fi nd something in their answers that I can relate to, make them relax and give me more funny information.”

Any tricks or secrets for playing the Feud? “No, but the people that have proven to be better players are women. An all-female team will win fi ve games, a car and every- thing. We’ve had a lot of all-male teams, and none ofthem have made it fi ve in a row to the car.”

When your book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Mancame out in 2009, were you surprised at its success?“The book turned into a game show, then the talk show, then a movie. It’s just been a snow-ball effect.”

You’re a busy guy. What’s on your bucket list? “I’ve got a big list. But after Celebrity Family Feud be-comes a success, I think ABC should give me an air-plane. I really do, and I hope some-body can hear me that works with ABC.”

I heard Natalie Imbruglia’s next album is songs all previously

recorded by men. Like who?

—Melissa B., Akron, Ohio

A: Male, out this week from the Australian-born

singer-actress, 40, includes her versions of tunes done

originally by Tom Petty, Pete Townshend, Damien

Rice, Neil Young, Cat Stevens and several other artists—all male. “When you hear a song by a man and then the same song

by a woman, it’s a different interpretation, because we’re different emotion-ally,” says Imbruglia. Her cover of the song “Torn”

was a Grammy-nominated hit in 1998.

Q: I’m anxious to see Denis Leary in FX’s new Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll. Did he ever want to be a rock star?

—George S., Louisville, Ky.

A: Leary, who stars in the new TV series as Johnny Rock, a rocker who never made the big time, was a singer/songwriter when he was younger. But he later chose comedy and acting over music. “I love rock and roll,” says Leary, 57, who now writes some music for the show.

Having a HOT SUMMERElizabeth Banks, 41, is red-hot coming off her directorial debut with Pitch Perfect 2. But she’s also sizzling with roles in Love & Mercy, Magic Mike XXL and Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, premiering July 31 on Netfl ix. Here are fi ve fun facts.

1. She attended trapeze school on California’s Santa Monica Pier.

2. She has a sweet tooth for cupcakes.

3. A broken leg from a softball game led her to an audition for her fi rst acting role in a school play.

5. She’s an avid fantasy football player.

4. The Hunger Games franchise star is a former Brownie and Girl Scout—and, yes, she sold cookies.

EMAIL YOUR QUESTIONS FOR WALTER SCOTT TO [email protected]

Q: Why doesn’t Joan Cusack make more mov-ies? She is so fun to watch.—Mark Parsons, Lincoln, Neb.

A: The Shameless TV star, 52, certainly knows comedy, but she takes her motherhood seriously. So she balances work against the needs of her two teen-

age sons, Dylan, 18, and Miles, 14. “My kids are my fi rst priority always,” says the Emmy-nominated actress. She looks for jobs that jibe with their sched-ules, like her role as an author escort in The End of the Tour, in theaters July 31, alongside Jason Segel and Jesse Eisenberg.

Lately I have noticed quite a few newspa-

pers and magazines praising a polish for-

mulated by a homemaker. The articles

report that Donna Maas grew frustrated with

rubbing and scrubbing her silver, brass and other

metals only to see them quickly become dull and

tarnished again. Determined to put an end to

her constant battle with tarnish Donna formu-

lated a metal cleaner and it’s transforming the

industry.

Anita Gold, nationally syndicated columnist

and expert on the restoration of antiques calls

MAAS (named after its inventor) “The best and

most amazing polish in the world.” Ms. Gold

wrote in her column, “A truly miraculous polish

referred to as “miracle polish” that’ll turn the

most disastrous pieces into the most de-brightful

is MAAS Fine Polishing Creme For All Metals,

which cleans, restores, preserves and polishes to

perfection any brass, copper, chrome, silver, stain-

less steel, aluminum, gold or any other metal with

amazing results – no matter how badly stained,

spotted, discolored, flood-damaged, weathered,

dirty, dingy, drab, or dull they may be.”

Since I had an old brass lamp in desperate need

of restoration, this journalist decided to put

MAAS to the test. The lamp had been stored in

the garage and was in far worse condition than I

remembered. I was flabbergasted as I watched the

polishing creme wipe away layers and years of

tarnish. Never have I used anything so easy. The

lamp actually looks better than when I purchased

it. Better yet, months later it’s still glowing!

The polish worked so effortlessly, I decided to

refurbish my mother’s collection of antique brass

and copper cookware. The badly stained pots

and pans developed black spots that had been

impossible to remove. MAAS wiped away the

years of built-up residue even from the most dis-

colored pieces. While pol-

ishing the pots and pans,

I noticed MAAS applying

a shine on the stainless

steel sink. So I cleaned the

entire sink with the

creme. WOW! The shine

is unbelievable and al-

though I wash dishes

every day, the shine

keeps-on-shining. And it’s

no longer covered with

ugly water spots – water just rolls off the protec-

tive finish and down the drain.

An independent consumer study of 28 metal pol-

ishes reports, “MAAS Polishing Creme has no

equals in all around polishing performance...”

MAAS retained its shine longer than every polish

tested. Good Housekeeping Institute recommends

MAAS for restoring heavily tarnished heirlooms

stating, MAAS cleans best and gives lasting results.”

The Miami Herald says “Polishing product can

renew old silver.” The Chicago Tribune headline

sums it all up by saying “One Amazing Polish Is

The Best At Every-

thing.”

How did a home-

maker come up with

something the indus-

try’s experts couldn’t?

The reporter in me had

to find out.

During our interview

Donna explained, “I

enjoy the warmth that

beautifully polished

metals add to a home.

However, not the hours it took to keep them tar-

nish free. The harsh cleaners always left my

hands dry and burning – one instant silver dip

smelled so bad I felt sick. That's when I became

determined to find a better way to care for the

metals in my home.”And that she did. Her formula developed in con-

junction with a chemist friend has a lavender scent,

feels more like a hand cream, quickly restores and

leaves a deep, rich one-of-a-kind luster beyond any-

thing I’ve ever seen.

“To my surprise,” Donna reveals, “the formula

far exceeded my original goal. MAAS restores

glass fireplace doors,

clouded crystal vases,

fiberglass, linoleum

and even plastic. The

restorations were so

remarkable everyone

suggested that I sell

my invention on tele-

vision.”

Donna sent samples

of her polish to tele-

vised shopping chan-

nels and both QVC and The Home Shopping

Network asked Donna to personally appear on

TV to demonstrate her product. 17,000 viewers

called during MAAS’

debut and encore per-

formances quickly

brought a million dol-

lars in record-breaking

sales.

Leona Toppel was

about to throw away a

brass chandelier. “No

amount of elbow grease

could shine it up. With

very little effort (a big

plus for me because I

suffer from arthritis)

MAAS made that chandelier look like new. It’s

been years and to everyone's surprise it’s still

glowing.”

“MAAS outperforms every polish I’ve tried,”

Donna beams with satisfaction. “So if you’re as

tired as I was of cleaning metals just to see tarnish

reappear a few weeks later, MAAS it!”

To win the Bravo cooking competition

show Top Chef, you have to whip up some fancy food. Mei Lin, 28, did just that in the nale, wowing judges with her creative Asian-Latin menu. But when at home in L.A., she makes simple favorites, like this sweet and savory chicken. “It’s an easy comfort-food dish,” says Lin, who was born in China but raised in Dearborn, Mich., where she worked in her family’s Chinese restaurant. “I have a super-tiny kitchen in my apartment, and it’s a one-pan meal.” Serve with rice, noodles or quinoa, and you too will feast like a top chef at home.

1. Heat a large Dutch oven over medium heat. Add sugar, cooking until it starts to melt. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook, swirling pan frequently, 4-5 minutes or until caramel is bubbling. Remove pan from heat and carefully add fi sh sauce (mixture will bubble and steam vigorously). Stir until caramel dissolves (if it hardens, set pan over medium-high heat). Pour caramel into a heatproof measuring cup or bowl. Rinse out pan with very hot water; dry.

2. Return pan to medium-high heat; heat oil. Add onion and ginger; cook 1 minute. Add garlic; cook 1 minute. Remove onion, ginger and garlic with slotted spoon; reserve in small bowl.

3. Season chicken with salt. Add chicken to pan; brown 2 minutes on each side. (Do this in batches, if necessary, to avoid crowding pan.) Add caramel, black pepper and chile. Turn chicken to coat. Reduce heat to medium. Cook 20 minutes or until chicken is done, turning every 2-3 minutes. Stir in reserved onions, ginger and garlic; cook 2-3 minutes. Serve garnished with green onions. Serves 4.

The con-versation rattles merrily back and forth, punctuated with peals of laughter and wide-ranging memories.

ROCKIN’ AS RICKIStreep and Kline’s latest col-laboration, Ricki and the Flash, is a musically infused rock ’n’ roll drama from Oscar-winning director Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs, Philadelphia). Streep is Ricki, a guitar-strumming bohemian who left her fam-ily to pursue musical stardom

in a band, while Kline is Pete, her ex-husband, who stayed behind and finished the job of raising their three kids.

The film features energetic performances from Ricki and her band, the Flash, in which Streep strums and sings along-side her onscreen lover, played by ’80s pop hit-maker Rick Springfield. The heart of the film, however, is a story about family, which Ricki is unable to reconcile with her rock ’n’ roll dream. Streep and Kline have fared much better in this regard, enjoying successful show-biz careers while rais-ing their respective children, though both concede that jug-gling their commitments has often been far from easy.

“I went through a period where I picked movies accord-ing to location,” Streep says. If the job took her away from home for more than two weeks, she would decline. “I would never do anything too far away.”

With her 19 Oscar nomi-nations and three wins, just imagine what other success she might have enjoyed with-out this self-imposed limita-tion. She has no regrets, how-ever, happily raising her son (Henry, 35) and daughters (Mamie, 31; Grace, 29; and Louisa, 24) with her husband, sculptor Don Gummer. Henry is now a musician and Louisa is a model, while Mamie and Grace are both actors.

Streep believes that acting is often kinder to family life than regular nine-to-five em-ployment. “In America you have just two weeks off a year,” she says. “Actors, on the other hand, are at home a lot.”

WHEN ACTING IS A FAMILY AFFAIRWith two daughters both in the business, Streep sometimes gets to see them at work—and work with them. In fact, her Ricki is mom to Mamie’s Julie in Ricki and the Flash. But with the mother-daughter re-lationship far from friendly on screen, director Demme instructed them to remain in character, forbidding them

from talking to one another between takes to maintain the movie’s ongoing tension be-tween the two characters.

“That kind of annoyed me,” says Streep.

“That makes me feel a bit Draconian,” chuckles Demme. “I told Mamie, ‘I don’t want you to think that you’re Mamie and that’s mommy Meryl over there. I hope there’ll be a mini-mum of hanging out and being your usual selves while we’re shooting, because we’re going for something very exceptional here that has nothing to do with loving your mom.’ And

Mamie really rose to the occa-sion; I’m really proud of her.”

Streep has worked with her daughters before, back to 1986 on Heartburn, in which she starred alongside Jack Nichol-son. Mamie, then 18 months old, played a 1-year-old.

“Typical actress,” quips Kline, “lying about her age even then.”

Streep also worked with Grace, in The Homesman, the

2014 Western directed by her dear actor friend Tommy Lee Jones, and in The House of the Spirits in 1993.

“Gracie played me as a 5-year-old,” recalls Streep of The House of the Spirits. “She had never been in anything but she looked a lot like me, so they gave her this big part. She had to come into a room, look into a coffin, have an asthma attack and then cry. That’s a lot to do.”

“I said, ‘Gracie, you’re go-ing to have to…’ and before I could get anything else out of my mouth she said, ‘I know,

country—two in Los Angeles, one in New York City and the other in Santa Fe, N.M.

“I try to get everyone at home at Christmastime,” says the actress, 66.

(2006), in which Streep was able to exercise her vocal chops. She was in fact trained as a singer as well as an actress, performing in a Mo-town band during college. More recently, she showcased her sing-ing skills in the musicals Mamma Mia! and Into the Woods. Now, in Ricki and the Flash, she’s belting it out once again, and part of her role required her to learn how to play a 1968 Fender Telecaster.

“We did everything live,” she says. “It always had to be the whole song, run all the way through, and [director] Jonathan recorded it—what you see and hear is what we did. We had just two weeks rehearsal and then what I played and sang went in the movie. It was a lot of pressure.”

“I think Meryl’s been waiting for the role of Ricki for a long time,” Demme says. “It was an excuse for her to learn how to play electric guitar and just get up there and go. She put so much time into rehearsal, and into her research and learning guitar and everything—by the time she gets there, she’s confi dent and ready to do it. Whether literally or meta-phorically, she’s ready to rock.”

“I thought the band’s perfor-mances were terrifi c,” adds Kline, who attended Indiana University where he began student life as an aspiring classical pianist. “I knew that you loved classical music, Meryl, but I didn’t know that you loved rock ’n’ roll in that deep, pri-mal way that one needs to sing it.”

Yet she does. And that’s Meryl Streep. Her Christmas gifts to the children might be predictable, but the woman herself is still full of surprises.

Mom, I know.’ So you talk about advice you give your children—they already know it all. And she was great.”

NO STARS IN THEIR EYES Kline’s kids, Greta and Owen, have also performed with their dad. Owen ap-peared in Dave (1993), and both were featured in e An-niversary Party (2001). ey

popped up independently of their father in e Squid and the Whale (2005).

“One of the good things about having your parents in this job is that there’s no mystique to show business,” Kline says, and Streep agrees. “ ey know what the deal is,” she says. “ ey see all my friends who started exactly when I did, and they see them at 60 still having to go in and audition, and waiting by the phone hoping that they’ll get a callback for a commercial. ey don’t have any illusions about what it is. I am very impressed by my girls.”

e feeling is surely mutu-al; Streep is one of America’s most talented, most distin-

guished actresses. She grew up in New Jersey and attend-ed Vassar before graduating from Yale Drama School in 1975.

One of her earli-est stage roles was in Measure for Measureat Shakespeare in the Park in New York City in 1976, where she met and fell in love with e Godfather actor John

Cazale. She then ap-peared alongside him in e Deer Hunter (1978), her fi rst major movie, and nursed him through a tragic illness, until his death later that year.

She married Gummersix months later and her career went from strength to strength. She made a memo-rable turn in Woody Allen’s Manhattan before Kramer vs. Kramer (both 1979). en came Sophie’s Choice.

‘I WAS A NOBODY’ “When our director on Sophie’s Choice, Alan J. Pakula, told me I had been cast,” says Kline, “he said, ‘You know who just

called? Meryl Streep, and she said you’d make a great Nathan [the movie’s male lead].’ I said, ‘Great—who is she?’ ”

Kline is making a joke,

though Streep insists he’s not too far from the truth. “He’s right: I was a nobody,” she says. “I’d been cast over all these wonderful famous actresses.”

Streep and Kline also worked together in director Robert Altman’s fi nal movie, A Prairie Home Companion

may affect your rights. You may be affected by the partial settlements of a class action lawsuit claiming that AstraZeneca AB, Aktiebolaget Hassle, AstraZeneca LP, Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Ranbaxy Inc., Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. (together, “Non-Settling Defendants”), Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd., Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc. (“Teva”), Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Ltd., and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, Inc. (“DRL” and, together with Teva, “Settling Defendants”) violated various state laws by delaying the availability of allegedly less expensive generic versions of Nexium. The lawsuit alleges Defendants’ conduct caused certain consumers and third-party payors (collectively, “End-Payors”) to pay too much for Nexium. All Defendants deny any wrongdoing. Settlements have been reached with Teva and DRL. The lawsuit will continue against the Non-Settling Defendants. Are You Affected? As a consumer, you may be a member of the End-Payor Class on behalf of which the Settlements were reached if you purchased or paid for some or all of the purchase price for Nexium and/or its generic equivalent in AZ, CA, FL, IA, KS, MA, ME, MI, MN, MS, NE, NV, NM, NY, NC, ND, OR, RI, SD, TN, UT (while a resident or citizen of UT), VT, WI, WV, and/or District of Columbia from April 14, 2008 onward, in capsule form, for consumption by yourself or your family. If you are obligated to pay a tiered co-payment (i.e., a co-payment amount that differs between brand and generic prescriptions) or you are obligated to pay a percentage of the purchase price, you are in the Class. Certain third-party payors are also members of the Class. You are NOT an End-Payor Class Member if you: (a) have a “Cadillac Plan” “flat co-payment” as part of your insurance coverage, which means you must pay a flat co-payment amount for a prescription regardless of whether it is a brand or generic, and all of your purchases of Nexium or generic Nexium were made through this plan; (b) purchased Nexium or generic Nexium only directly from Defendants or only for resale purposes; (c) purchased or received Nexium or generic Nexium only through a Medicaid program; (d) are one of the Defendants or an officer, director, manager, employee, subsidiary, or affiliate of Defendants; (e) are the judge in this lawsuit or a member of the judge’s immediate family; or (f) you previously excluded yourself from the End-Payor Class. What do the SettlementS Provide? DRL agreed to withdraw certain motions, and agreed to provide witnesses, a certification, and a factual proffer for use in the trial involving the End-Payor Class, other plaintiffs, and the remaining Defendants. To settle this lawsuit involving the End-Payor Class and two other plaintiff groups (the Direct Purchaser Class and Individual Retailers), Teva has agreed to deposit a total of $24 million into a Settlement Fund, which will be used to pay: (1) costs and expenses incurred by counsel for all three plaintiff groups; (2) up to $2 million in costs and expenses incurred in continuing the lawsuit against the Non-Settling Defendants; (3) taxable costs and taxes payable on the Settlement Fund; (4) incentive awards to the named End-Payor and Direct Purchaser Class Plaintiffs; and (5) settlement administration and notice expenses. The remainder of the Settlement Fund, if any, will be allocated as follows: (a) $1 million to the End-Payor Class, which may be distributed as a cy pres (charitable) distribution if no further recoveries result in distributions to members of the End-Payor Class; (b) and 61% of the balance to the Direct Purchaser Class and 39% to the Individual Retailer Class. Your rightS & oPtionS. You have the right to object to one or both Settlements and you (or your lawyer) may appear and speak in Court, but it is not required. The deadline to submit an objection or request to appear is August 10, 2015. Go to www.NexiumCase.com for details.the court’S fairneSS hearing. The Court will hold a hearing in this case (In re: Nexium (Esomeprazole) Antitrust Litig., MDL No. 2409) at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time on September 29, 2015 to consider whether to approve the Settlements and a request for the payment of up to $2,500,000 in costs and expenses incurred to date and $5,000 incentive awards to each of the ten named End-Payor Plaintiffs.Want more information? Go to the website, call toll-free, or write to Nexium End-Payor Notice Administrator, P.O. Box 43229, Providence, RI 02940-3229, for more information, including more complete information regarding Class membership and rights.

Her Christmas gifts to the children might be predictable, but the woman herself is still full of surprises.

Ask MarilynBy Marilyn vos Savant

As a prune is a dried plum, how can you get prune juice from it?

—R.S., Columbus, Ga.

First, the prunes are rehydrated. (Not that they turn back into plums!) Then they are “juiced” so that the drink contains about 20 percent prune solids. Lemon or lime juice, citric acid and honey are usually added for a tastier beverage. Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) may be another ingredient. By the way, plum growers have won permission from the Food and Drug Administration to call prunes “dried plums” instead. But the name “prune juice” remains. And no wonder. A jar of “dried plum juice” on your grocer’s shelf would be a funny sight, wouldn’t it?
