WALTER SCOTT’S

Brad Ellis played the keys for Glee.Paul Mirkovich (right) on The Voice

The Emmy Award-winning actor, 55, of The West Wing fame takes on the advertising business in the new Showtime series Happyish, which premieres April 26.

Happyish seems pretty bullish on the ad industry. “It certainly is not a love song to advertising. It is—in a hilarious, very dark way—taking aim at this marketed world that we live in, where we are inundated with inane brandings.”

Your character has a line: “Thinking is

not as important as tweeting.” What’s your take on social media?

“I have incredibly mixed feelings about it. Look, I’m

an actor—you spend half your life trying to get into the paper and the other half trying to get out.” Do you believe the theory presented in Happyish that you can only be as happy as your biology allows? “I don’t know if I believe that. The older I get, though, it seems that a lot of people form a world view which informs their level of happiness around age 6, and it doesn’t change much after that.”

WALTER SCOTT ASKS ...

BRADLEY WHITFORDI love

Jessica Lange. What has she been doing?

—Lyn W., Lynnwood, Wash.

A: For the past four years, the Oscar-winning

actress, 66, has been starring in the hit FX

series American Horror Story, although she

announced the most recent season was her last. She also appeared

in the 2014 Mark Wahlberg movie The

Gambler and stars in the action-comedy Wild Oats,

yet to be released.

What is your must-see TV? Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show and The Nightly Show. I don’t miss them.”What’s on your bucket list? “A million roles I want to play. A million people I would love to work with. I would love to go dogsledding before the planet warms up too much.”

Q: Is the piano player on The Voice the same man who plays piano on Glee?

—Cecilia J., Midland, Mich.A. No. Paul Mirkovich, who’s also been the musical director for artists including Pink and Cher, is the musical director and pianist for the house band for The Voice, Monday and Tuesday nights on NBC. He’s the piano player you see accompanying the contestants when they’re working with the judges and guest judges. Brad Ellis was the accompanist for the glee club on Glee, which aired its series finale March 20 on FOX.

Q

1. “When I’m on tour, I try to visit as many baseball stadiums as possible.”

4. “I would like to own a pig.”

2. “I auditioned (unsuccess-fully) for the Magic Castle [a Hollywood magic club] when I was 12.”

THE GROBAN FILE There’s more to multi-platinum recording artist Josh Groban, 34, than the beautiful music he makes on his new album, Stages. Coming out April 28, the CD is a collection of some of his favorite musical theater songs of all time. Here are some fun facts about the Los Angeles native, who appeared in the re-cent movie comedy The Hollars.

5. “When I was young, I dreamed of being a veterinarian.”

3. “My favorite off-limits food is stinky cheese.”

“When we were grow-ing up in New York City, we led very normal city lives,” Hunter says. “We rode the subway to public school, went on trips with our grandma to the beach and museums. When we entered high school, and her career started to grow and moviegoers would approach her in public, that’s when I would some-times ride with her in a cab to school.

“There are few places and moments when my sister can move about without being recog-nized. When those rare instances happen, I am reminded of a time before her celebrity, when we were kids, and I treasure that,” says Hunter, who made a brief appear-ance (along with other family members) in Johansson’s 1996 movie Manny & Lo, and who sometimes accompanies his sister to events. “She is my other half. Nothing is more important to me than my twin.”

“I feel very connected to him,” Johansson says of her brother, who now works out of the spotlight as the client services manager of

f you ask Scarlett Johansson where she calls home, she doesn’t have an easy answer.

“I live a little bit of everywhere. My husband and I and the baby are a little bit nomadic at the moment,” says the globe-

trotting actress. To Johansson, 30, home is wherever her family is. She and her

husband, French art curator and former journalist Romain Dauriac, welcomed a baby girl, Rose Dorothy, last September. They live in Paris, close to his family, and in New York City, close to hers.

One place she always feels at home is in front of the camera. Audi-ences can see her next in Avengers: Age of Ultron, opening May 1, in which she returns for the fourth time to the super-heroic, crime-fighting, world-saving role of the World War II-era Black Widow alongside Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Hawkeye ( Jeremy Renner) and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo).

“I really enjoy playing this character. She was really the first female superhero, a reluctant one,” she says. “She’s never really been able to forge close relationships with anybody. She’s a lone wolf.”

Off camera, Johansson couldn’t be more different from her intro-verted character. “I’m constantly dazzled by Scarlett’s technique because on set, she’s a goofball,” says Avengers director Joss Whedon. “She’s always cracking people up. She works hard, but then, cut!—she’s goofing around again.”

Johansson had the itch to entertain from a young age, and her hometown of the Big Apple was the perfect environment for the bud-ding young actress.

“I feel very connected to him,” Johansson says of her brother, who now works out of the spotlight as the client services manager of

Friends of Rockaway, a communi-ty-based nonprofit organization founded to rebuild homes in Far Rockaway, N.Y., in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy’s devastation in 2012. “He’s the most golden-hearted person. I think a lot of

people spend their life looking for a partner, someone to be a mirror to reflect upon, to remind them that they’ve lived. You want some-one to tell you what he witnessed in your life. My twin brother has always been that for me.”

She also has found a partner in her husband, Dauriac, whom she married in October of last year. (Her fi rst marriage to actor Ryan Reynolds ended in 2011.) Johans-son admits fame can be a challenge

in relationships, especially when two actors are involved.

“Acting is a very strange world to be co-existing in. It’s very vola-tile. ere’s always going to be the more successful person,” she says. “It’s related to rejection. Because actors, if they’re not having success, connect it directly to unpopulari-ty—to the fact that nobody wants them. It’s not necessarily true. I’m constantly rejected.

“[Marriage] takes a lot of work,” she continues. “It takes a man who’s not only confident in the love that you have for one another, but confi dent in what he has going on in his own career. He has to be in a fi eld that’s completely diff erent from yours. My husband’s also involved in art. What’s impor-tant to him is the recognition that he gets from his job, and that has nothing to do with my job.”

It’s their similar interests and their interest in each other that Jo-hansson says keeps them going strong.

“We like to go out and go danc-ing. Other times, we like to sit at home and eat ai food and watch House Hunters International for four hours,” she says. “And we’re interested in each other’s worlds. He’s interested in my weird, alien entertainment world. It fascinates him because it’s so diff erent than what he knows. And I like to go to art openings with him and talk about art and emerging artists with him. at’s his passion.”

Another passion they share is their new role as parents.

“The biggest joy that I have is looking at my daughter,” she says. “When I’m just hanging out with

her and we’re doing silly stuff and if I make her laugh, the feeling of joy I have is explosive. If I can make her laugh and she gets a big smile on her face, that’s pretty much it. If only you could actually bottle that and carry it around.”

at same joy was evident on the set of Avengers. e actress was a few months along in her pregnancy at the start of fi lming, but with a little digital work and a few stunt doubles, fi lmmakers were able to hide it.

“We didn’t want to turn it into ‘the Black Widow carries groceries’ for the entire fi lm!” says Whedon. “She was very game every day. She worked hard, she worked out, she protected the baby and protected the movie, too.”

Something she couldn’t hide was her excitement about being preg-nant.

“I have never in my life seen a woman happier when she was preg-nant,” says her Avengers co-star and longtime friend, Chris “Captain America” Evans. “She was in the best mood all the time, she was al-ways joking, always laughing. She’s an incredibly positive person any-way, but she was so good at being pregnant. The entire time I just couldn’t believe that she was han-dling it, because it’s a demanding role on top of everything else: squeezing into that suit and having to do stunts and fight scenes and just in general being on your feet all day. Not only did she come to work so professional, but she was just so happy. She was glowing.”

Johansson is just as eff usive about Evans. “I’ve known Chris since I was 17, when we did The Perfect Score,” she says. “This is our fifth movie together. We’re like Bogart and Bacall.”

2008 Vicky Cristina BarcelonaOn a Spanish vacation, two American women (Johansson and Rebecca Hall) meet an artist (Javier Bardem) who falls in love with them both.

2010 Iron Man 2Johansson debuts the character of Natasha Romanoff/the Black Widow.

2012 HitchcockShe plays starlet Janet Leigh in the biopic of the icon-ic director played by Anthony Hopkins.

2013 Under the SkinCritics praised this “hideously beauti-ful” arty sci-fi fi lm about a sexy space alien who drives a van across Scotland picking up unsuspecting victims.

2013 HerEven though she was never seen, Johansson’s voice—as a comput-er operating system—was a huge part of this futuristic love story.

2014 LucyFrench director Luc Besson steered this brainy action drama about a hyper-evolved female warrior.

her and we’re doing silly stuff and ifI make her laugh, the feeling of joy I have is explosive.

2015 Avengers: Age of UltronMarvel Comics all-stars reunite to save the Earth from a super-villain with plans for humanity’s mass extinction.

EASIER Cell phones today have become more dif cult to see and harder to hear. They have many features Mom may never use. That’s not the case with the Jitterbug. Navigating the menu functions is intuitive with YES and NO buttons. A backlit keypad and big legible numbers make it easy to call family and friends. And the powerful speaker ensures every conversation will be loud and clear.

SMARTER Most cell phones need to be recharged nearly every day. That’s why the Jitterbug was designed with one of the longest-lasting batteries on the market. With up to 25 days of standby time, Mom can go nearly an entire month without charging her phone. So when she’s talking with family or friends, she won’t have to worry about running out of power.

And while the spotlight contin-ues to shine on the actress, she’s now concerned with keeping it off her young daughter.

“It’s hard,” she says. “On the one hand, you don’t want to isolate your kids, but you don’t want to make your kids feel like freaks: There’s this fascination with famous kids, like they’re celebrity spawn." For now, Johansson focuses on leading as normal a life as possible—for herself and her family.

“I have many luxuries of fame, but

I make my own bed. I like to buy my groceries. I drive my car. I like to do the normal, everyday things that I’ve always enjoyed,” she says. “It doesn’t mean that when I drive out of my garage, I don’t fear that I’m being fol-lowed by somebody, because I prob-ably am. But there’s always going to be an adjustment. At some point, you have to take your life back and say, ‘You know what? If I feel like picking up my dry cleaning and if someone’s going to photograph me doing it, so what?’ Part of being with your kids is making them feel as safe and normal as you can.”

Johansson approaches parenting the same way she approaches any-thing in her life—with her own set of rules.

“I think you just have to encour-age your kids to be who they are, be themselves and not live in the shadow of your accomplishments,” she says.

And her long list of accomplish-ments will continue to grow. In addition to being an actress, Broadway star and singer, she also has an interest in politics, having campaigned for both John Kerry and Barack Obama.

“My grandmother and mother were politically active. We went to local rallies, whether it was for

mayoral elections or to see diff er-ent presidential candidates when we were little kids. We watched debates. When my mom voted, I went along. I just grew up in a family talking politics,” she says.

Would she ever consider run-ning for offi ce herself?

“I have too much on my plate right now,” she says with a laugh. “I’m busy saving the world from the forces of evil, remember?”

TYPES OF PRODUCTS

During the 1930s to the 1980s, products sold by The Flintkote Company and Flintkote Mines Limited (the “Debtors”) may have contained asbestos. These products could have included foor tile, roofng shingles, joint compound, cement pipe, asphalt and other products.

Persons or entities exposed to, or harmed by, the Debtors’ asbestos or asbestos-containing products may have personal injury, wrongful death or other claims against the Debtors.  You do not need to (i) have been diagnosed, (ii) have symptoms, or (iii) be impaired to be affected by the Plan.

If you believe you may have been exposed to, or harmed by the Debtors’ products, you may be entitled to vote on the terms of the Reorganization. You should carefully read this notice and the important documents located at http://www.fintkotebankruptcy.com.

PLAN OF REORGANIZATION

The Debtors have fled for bankruptcy. On February 9, 2015, the Debtors fled a modifed Joint Plan of Reorganization (the “Plan”) with the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware (the “Bankruptcy Court”). The Plan includes the terms of a settlement reached between the Debtors and their former indirect parent company, Imperial Tobacco Canada Limited (“ITCAN”). The Plan has been jointly proposed by the Debtors, the Asbestos Claimants Committee and the Future Claimants Representative (collectively, the “Plan Proponents”). As background, the Plan is a modifed version of a bankruptcy plan on which Debtors previously solicited votes in 2008 and 2009, and which was confrmed by the Bankruptcy Court on December 21, 2012 (the “Original Plan”).

A document describing the Plan’s changes (the “Disclosure Supplement”), which the Bankruptcy Court approved on March 17, 2015, and a copy of the Plan itself and voting materials (a “Resolicitation Package”), has been mailed to known holders of claims against the Debtors or their lawyers.

THE TRUST

The Plan provides for a trust to be established to pay eligible asbestos personal injury claims against the Debtors (the “Trust”). The Plan states that all current and future holders of asbestos personal injury claims will be forever prohibited from asserting claims directly against the Debtors and other parties protected under the Plan, including ITCAN. Such persons can receive money only from the Trust. The Plan and the Disclosure Supplement have important additional details and are available at http://www.fintkotebankruptcy.com.

SUPPLEMENTAL SETTLEMENT BAR ORDER

Under the Plan, ITCAN will also obtain protection from certain claims by a settlement bar order, which is described more particularly in the Plan and Disclosure Supplement.

VOTING PROCEDURES

The Bankruptcy Court has issued an order describing who can vote on the Plan, how to vote, and how votes will be counted. The Disclosure Supplement has information that will help you decide whether and how to vote on the Plan if you are entitled to do so. Votes cast on the Original Plan will be counted as votes on the Plan, unless a holder changes such vote. If you voted on the Original Plan and do not wish to change your vote, you do not need to submit a ballot. If you did not vote on the Original Plan, you may obtain and cast a ballot, which would be subject to the Plan Proponents’ right to object. To be counted, a completed ballot must be received by the Voting Agent at the address below by 4:00 p.m. (prevailing Eastern time) on June 2, 2015. Any ballot received after that deadline will not be counted.

Proof of an asbestos personal injury or wrongful death claim does not need to be fled with the Bankruptcy Court. Special procedures have been established for holders of asbestos personal injury and wrongful death claims to vote on the Plan. Lawyers for holders of these claims may vote on the Plan on behalf of their clients if authorized by their client. If you are unsure whether your lawyer is authorized to vote on your behalf, please contact your lawyer.

THE HEARING TO CONFIRM THE PLAN

A hearing to confrm the Plan will be held before the Honorable Mary F. Walrath, United States Bankruptcy Judge, at the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware, 824 Market Street, 5th Floor, Wilmington, Delaware 19801, commencing on August 10, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. (prevailing Eastern time). You may attend the hearing but are not required to do so.

OBJECTING TO THE PLAN

Objections to the Plan are limited to changes between the Original Plan and the Plan and must be submitted in writing and received by July 8, 2015 to be considered. All objections must comply with the requirements in the notice of the Confrmation Hearing, available at http://www.fintkotebankruptcy.com.

HOW TO OBTAIN DOCUMENTS

If you would like additional information about the Plan, Disclosure Supplement and the Trust (including copies of the Plan and the Disclosure Supplement), you may contact the Debtors’ Voting Agent at (800) 290-0537 or visit http://www.fintkotebankruptcy.com.

Recipe by Robin Richardson, GM and executive pastry chef, The Bakery at Sullivan University, Louisville, Ky.

The Mint Julep is nearly as essential to the rst Saturday in May as the Kentucky Derby itself. In Louisville, Ky., the avors of the classic cocktail (made with muddled mint

leaves, simple syrup and bourbon) are celebrated and enjoyed in sweets too. There, The Bakery at Sullivan University sells more than 100 dozen Mint Julep cupcakes during Derby week. And they’ve just introduced a ri on chocolate cream pie that’s almost as thrilling as the most exciting two minutes in sports!

I read that while human life expectancy has in-creased, human lifespan remains the same. If so, how can scientists account for the rising age of the oldest living humans since 1800, from about 100 years old to over 120 most recently?

—B.J., St. Louis, Mo.

The outer limits of the human lifespan are genetic, but increased life expectan-cy (the oldest age in that lifespan that we’re likely to reach) is due to better nutrition, modern medicine and other environmental (non-inborn) factors. If the age of the oldest living hu-mans has risen, it’s because some genetic groups may have slightly longer lifes-pans than others, and they are benefiting from those same factors.
