WALTER SCOTT ASKS ...

ELLIE KEMPERShe’s the go-to girl for sunny, positive characters. Kemper, 35, played the upbeat Erin Hannon on The Office, was part of the hilarious ensemble in the box office hit Bridesmaids and now stars as the optimistic centerpiece (recently escaped from a doomsday cult) of her own Netflix series, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. When you play a character like Kimmy, does any part of her “rub off” on you? “There’s this line in the show about taking things 10 seconds at a time, which I think is very pro-found. I’ve been taking that with me. Any sort of hard time, I think, ‘I will take this in small chunks.’ It’s extremely helpful in managing diffi culty.”

Mad Men’s Jon Hamm was your acting teacher at John Burroughs School in St. Louis. Dish!“He attended my high school, and then went to college and came back and taught theater for a year. In the ninth grade, I took his acting class. Everyone loved him.”

How does it feel to have been part of TV history on a critically acclaimed show like The Office? “Not only was it my big break, but I can’t believe my good fortune. It’s smart, it’s funny and it’s a kind show too. Like Kimmy Schmidt, The Office had a heart.”

Do you ever want to play dark roles? “I think that would be fun. On The Office, Mindy Kaling and I did a music video for our Subtle Sexuality band called ‘The Girl Next Door.’ I was the witch and Mindy was the meek, everyday ‘girl next door.’ Even in that two-minute video, I loved playing the mean girl.”

What’s the latest onKenny Loggins?

Is he still recording?—David C., San Antonio, Texas

A: The “Footloose” singer, 67, is still making music as part of Blue Sky Riders, a country-rockin’ trio that’s gearing up for its second album this fall (watch for it at kennyloggins.com). But if you want to see the Grammy-winning Loggins solo, check out the fi nale of Playing House Sept. 8 on USA Network, when diehard fans Emma (Jessica St. Clair) and Maggie (Lennon Parham) crash one of his concerts.

Osbourne, Gaga, Raven-Symoné and Goodwin sport the lavender-grey look.

NBC’s Tuesday-night summer hit America’s Got Talent is looking for the stars of tomorrow, as TV talent shows have been doing for more than 60 years. Some of today’s brightest performers got their first

twinkles of exposure on an earlier television series—Star Search—but didn’t win.

Q: Will Esai Morales be re-turning to Criminal Minds?

—Nadia C., Lincoln, Neb.

A: Morales, 52, is squeezing in a couple of episodes of the CBS FBI drama between his work as President Julian Navarro on HBO’s The Brink and Amancio Malvado, a “fi gure of terrifying power and cruelty” on From Dusk Till Dawn, airing Tuesday nights on El Rey, an enter-tainment network aimed at a Latino audience. “Horror was my favorite genre as a very young man,” he says.

Q: What’s with young celebrity women dying their hair lavender-grey?

—Adam W., Huntingdon Valley, Pa.

A: The granny-chic look began with Kelly Osbourne and became trendy as Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Pink and Raven-Symoné followed the grey-is-the-new-blond trend. The most recent converts include Ginnifer Goodwin, who showed up in July with lavender-grey locks. It’s mostly a matter of girls just wanna have fun, but it isn’t easy. “It took eight hours of bleaching!” says Goodwin, 37. “I got a head-ache, but it was worth it.”

| LOVE YOUR LABOR |Labor Day, established 121 years ago by President Grover Cleveland, is an annual nod to workers. And it’s a good time to rethink your relation-ship with work. “Work doesn’t have to be your enemy,” says Mike Rowe, host of CNN’s Somebody’s Gotta Do It, returning for its third season in late September. “We still see ‘la-bor’ as making little rocks out of big rocks. There’s an element of drudgery to it. But Labor Day is a chance to redefi ne what we mean when we say ‘That is a good job,’” says the founder of Mike Rowe Works Foundation, (profoundly disconnected.com), which grants scholarships to men and women who have shown interest in and demonstrated an aptitude for mastering a specifi c trade.

CHECK YOUR MEDS Some drugs taken before bed, like steroids or asthma meds, can cause blood sugar fluctua-tions, says the president-elect of the American Diabetes Association, Desmond Schatz, M.D. Ask your doc about such side effects.

KEEP COCKTAILS LOW-CARB “For patients on insulin, a glass of wine or a beer with dinner is fine,” Schatz says. But too much alcohol can cause blood sugars to drop dangerously while you sleep. Stick to low-carb choices like whiskey, rum and vodka, and indulge in moderation.

ADD LIGHT ACTIVITY Being sedentary in the evening can make glucose levels rise, says

Robert Gabbay, M.D., chief medical officer at Joslin Dia-betes Center. Try combining TV time with some moder-

ate activity, like exercising on an elliptical machine or lifting hand weights.

DON’T OVERDO IT Wrap up tougher workouts at least seven hours before going to sleep if possible.

STICK TO ONE BEDTIME “Try to take nighttime or basal insulin at the same time each night to ensure more consistent blood sugars,” says Fran Cogen, M.D., director of the childhood and ado-lescent diabetes program at Children’s National Health System. Hitting the hay on a regular schedule is also an easy way to optimize sleep—a smart move since getting too few zzz’s over time may increase insulin resistance.

REST EASIERWITH DIABETES

HealthyStay

For the nearly 30 million people who have diabetes, the condition is a 24/7 deal. Those with diabetes may work hard all day to control blood sugar only to have glucose levels go haywire when night falls. Luckily, some simple lifestyle tweaks

can make all the difference, leading diabetes experts say. If you have diabetes or care for someone who does, read on to learn how to keep levels in line day and night.

Tips on managing the chronic condition around the clock. By Maureen Sangiorgio

S M A R T S N A C K I N G AT N I G H TMany people with diabetes deliberately nosh at night to keep glucose levels from plummeting while they sleep. A snack before bed isn’t a bad impulse, says Fran Cogen, M.D., director of the childhood and adolescent diabetes program at Children’s National Health System. But the wrong kind of snack can actually make things worse. Instead of high-carb fare like chips, “aim for a bedtime snack of protein plus carbohydrate,” she says. Also keep in mind that blood sugar levels are highly individual and will vary based on how active you are each day. So before you hit the kitchen, it’s best to test your glucose level.

D R . D O GEver since her daughter, Elle, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 8, Stefany Shaheen dreaded the nights. That’s because Elle sometimes suffered dangerously low blood sugar levels while she slept—severe enough to cause life-threatening seizures. Finally, the family found a solution they never expected: a service dog trained to detect subtle blood sugar fluctuations and alert Elle or her parents. In her new book Elle & Coach: Diabetes, the Fight for My Daughter’s Life and the Dog Who Changed Everything (Hachette), Shaheen describes Coach’s extraordinary abilities and how they’ve changed Elle’s life. Bill O’Reilly, 65, the host of the Fox News politi-cal talk show that bears his name, sits in his corner New York City office surrounded by his-tory. Framed photos of presidents, from Chester A. Arthur, James Buchanan and Dwight D.

Eisenhower to Barack Obama, decorate the walls, along with yellowed newspaper front pages blaring headlines on the as-sassination of President William McKinley and the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. Books on history line shelves. A plastic figure of famed World War II General George Patton stands watch on O’Reilly’s paper-strewn desk.

Why this obsession with the past? The TV host has a deep conviction that the past is prologue to the future.

“You have to learn from history and from the human condition that there are basically things that never change,” he says. “Greed, violence and corruption are always there—and so is heroism, vision and generosity. But you have to understand how these things unfold so you can define them and take action when they appear.”

McPherson’s books on the Civil War and Richard Atkinson’s “Liberation” trilogy documenting the battles that led to the Allied victories in Europe during World War II.

REWRITING THE PASTNo surprise then that the popular conservative pundit would eventually attempt to write history himself—or rewrite it. After penning a series of books based on his popular nightly Fox TV show, The O’Reilly Factor, he felt he’d exhausted the topics he regu-larly addresses on the show, and he set his sights on Lincoln.

The 16th president, he believed, was a natural place to start be-cause the Civil War, over which Lincoln presided, was “the defining event in American history.” Before the abolition of slavery, O’Reilly says, “we were not a country that was providing freedom for all” in spite of America’s tenet that “all men are created equal.”

Wary that Lincoln was well trod on literary ground, O’Reilly’s publisher tried to talk him out of the book. O’Reilly pursued it anyway, approaching Lincoln backward, from the standpoint of his assassination. It paid off. Killing Lincoln, co-written by Martin

BILL O’REILLYIS KILLING IT

PLAYING SOLDIERHistory captured O’Reilly’s imagination early on. During his days as a schoolboy in Levittown, N.Y., he sported a coonskin cap and dreamed of Davy Crockett, popularized by the mid-’50s ABC television series about the American frontiersman, and he was captivated by Johnnie Tremain, a 1957 Disney movie. Often young O’Reilly pretended to be a soldier, donning the officer’s uniform of his father, a World War II veteran who saw action in the Pacific.

After graduating from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., with a bachelor’s degree in history, O’Reilly went on to a two-year stint teaching at a Miami high school, where he tried to ignite his students’ interest by making history “come alive.” Later, he made it a goal to visit all 50 states and over the years traveled to 80 countries, soaking up facts and figures along the way.

He still draws everyday inspiration from icons like George Washington and Abraham Lincoln as well as lesser-known figures like James K. Polk. And he fosters his own knowledge by voraciously reading history—as many as three books a week—for pleasure and research. His recent intake includes James

Dugard and published in 2011, was a smash New York Times bestseller.

Since then, O’Reilly and Dugard have collaborated on three more successful history-based biographies, published in successive years: Killing Kennedy, Killing Jesus and Kill-ing Patton. Like Killing Lincoln, the books approach their subjects from their untimely ends: the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the crucifixion of Jesus and the death of Patton from complications after a car accident. O’Reilly character-izes the works as “investigative history,” through which he strives to evaluate his subjects objectively.

“Bill’s phenomenal success with his Killing series is due to his genuine belief in writing popular history in a you-are-there style,” says Stephen Rubin, the president and publisher of Henry Holt and Company. “The combination of a heart-thumping narrative and news-making revela-tions make for an irresistible reading experience.” Fans seem to agree. Collectively, according to Nielsen BookScan US, the series has sold 6.8 million books. O’Reilly’s works have made history and its personalities into a thrilling narrative for a wide audience of readers who might not have discov-ered them had it not been for one of their favorite television personalities.

‘KILLING’ REAGANMost recently, O’Reilly and Dugard added another historic icon to the Killing series: Ronald Reagan, our 40th presi-dent. Killing Reagan (Henry Holt and Company), goes on sale Sept. 22. “On balance, you have to give Ronald Reagan high marks,” O’Reilly says. Though Reagan died peacefully at the age of 93 after suffering from a prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s disease, the “killing” in the title relates to the unsuccessful 1981 assassination attempt on his life by John Hinckley Jr. O’Reilly expects that critics on both the far right and the far left will take aim at Killing Reagan. He knows criti-cism is inevitable from those on both ends of the political spectrum who “don’t want any dissent from their points of view,” but is determined to write what he believes is “honest and right”—regardless of the flack that might come with it.

‘I WAS A LOUDMOUTH’O’Reilly is no stranger to controversy. By his own admis-sion, he has been a polarizing figure since his childhood days in a coonskin hat. “I was a loudmouth,” he says. “I never really had that gene about wanting to be liked, and I carried that over into adulthood.” Accordingly, he shrugs off

those who call him a loudmouth today. He certainly doesn’t like it when the barbs hurled at him sting his family, which includes his daughter Madeline and son Spencer, born in 1998 and 2003 respectively to O’Reilly and Maureen McPhilmy, who divorced in 2011 after nearly 15 years of marriage. But he also knows it’s part of the territory for someone who unabashedly expresses himself every weekday through his The O’Reilly Factor double cannon—his two-hour syndicated radio show and his nightly one-hour Fox News show, both as popular as ever. Originally called The O’Reilly Report when it debuted in 1996, Factor continues to be a mainstay for Fox News, generat-ing audience ratings that routinely dwarf those of competitive cable news channels CNN and MSNBC.

‘CHAOTIC’ TIMES How will history see today’s times? “Chaotic,” O’Reilly predicts. “There are a lot of problems with technology over-whelming the human condition. That’s changing the way people learn, the way people behave. It’s changing everything, and society hasn’t caught up with that.” He points out that his parents and grandparents, who lived through the Depression and World War II, were “dialed into” the issues and events of their day, making them more engaged in the world. Today, he worries, most Americans “don’t know anything—and they don’t care to know.” While he and Dugard are well into their next historical work, he’s mum on the subject. In the past, other authors looking to emulate his success have gotten wind of his plans and pub-lished ahead of him. It’s likely to be a well-known historical figure who commands enough inherent interest to generate more seven-figure book sales—which probably rules out James K. Polk and other lesser-knowns that O’Reilly admires.

And if his next effort sparks a little controversy and stirs up some dust, well, that’s all in a day’s work for Bill O’Reilly.

Mark K. Updegrove is an author, historian and director of the LBJ Presidential Library.

Killing Reagan, the latest in O’Reilly’s series of Killing books is on sale Sept. 22.

Why does my home look a little strange when I get back from vacation?

—A.R., Middletown, N.Y.

A memory starts as a percep-tion stored in your brain. With repetition, it grows stronger. At home, the constant rep-etition generates a sense of comfort, as you don’t need to think much. You already know the location of every light switch and wastebasket. You live at home with less effort than anywhere else, even a comfy hotel room, largely due to your memory. But memo-ries fade. After only a week away, your home will appear slightly less familiar when you return. And the longer you’re away, the stranger the feeling you’ll get when you open your front door again.

Stephen Colbert is my best friend. Over nine years, four nights a week, I watched every one of the 1,447

episodes of e Colbert Report with the unshake-able belief that he was talking directly to me. I know, I know: It was a delusion. But that’s the nature of the relation-ship we fans have with Colbert—it’s intensely personal. And on Sept. 8, when he steps into David Letterman’s shoes at CBS’s e Late Show With Stephen Colbert, we will be sharing him with you.

First, to clear up any confusion, there is Stephen Colbert, the man, and “Stephen Colbert,” the right-wing TV pundit he created and played on Comedy Central’s satirical faux-news show. Colbert has described his character as a “well-intentioned, poorly informed, high-status idiot.”

Utilizing his talent, wit and charm, Colbert seduced us into loving this arrogant, narrow-minded blowhard who sneered at intellectualism and was ruled by his gut. He warned his audience they must be on constant alert to protect them-selves from the countless threats surrounding them, from bears (“Godless killing machines”) to baby carrots (“ ey’re trying to turn me gay”).

Colbert was schooled at Second City, the famed Chicago improvisation theater that pro-duced scores of comedic actors, from Bill Murray to Tina Fey. e underlying principle of improvi-

e New York City studio where the show was taped was the epicenter of what Colbert has called the “Joy Machine.” (I went to 16 tapings and would have gone to even more, but show rules allowed attendance only once every six months; as it was, I could see security keeping their eye on me.) With Cheap Trick’s “I Want You to Want Me” blasting, Colbert would burst from the wings, run around the desk and high-fi ve the lucky folks in the front row (last sum-mer, one of those lucky folks was me). He would ask the audience, “Does anyone have any questions to humanize me fi rst before I say those terrible things?” His responses could include singing, dancing or, upon request, dem-onstrating his mysterious ability to fold his wonky right ear over on itself, then, without touching it, pop it back into place. After he stepped behind the enormous C-shaped desk, the hairdresser would put the fi nal touches on his gleaming, blue-black helmet of hair. When stage manager Mark McKenna signaled that the taping was about to start, Colbert would look at the audience and say, “Have a good show.”

He meant it. We the audi-ence—in the studio and at home—were his partners in what he has called “extended improvisational games.” When NASA ran a contest to name exercise equipment on the International Space Station, he rallied the Colbert Nation. We voted, and the treadmill became

LEGAL NOTICE

If You Purchased a Product That Contains Flexible Polyurethane Foam, Such as a Mattress, a Couch, or

Carpet Underlay, You Could Be Eligible to Receive Money by Participating in Nine Proposed Class Action

Settlements Valued at $151,250,000.

TO DETERMINE IF YOU ARE ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE MONEY, READ BELOW.

YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS ARE AFFECTED. PLEASE READ THIS NOTICE CAREFULLY.

To File a Claim, Visit www.PolyFoamClassAction.com

Para una notificación en español, llamar o visitar nuestro website.

Who is paying the settlement money? A lawsuit known as In re Polyurethane Foam Antitrust Litigation, Case No. 10-MD-2196, is pending in the United

States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio in Toledo. The Court previously approved Settlements with two

Defendants in the lawsuit: Valle Foam Industries, Inc. and Domfoam International, Inc.

Additional Settlements have now been reached with the following Defendants: (1) Carpenter Co., (2) FFP Holdings LLC,

(3) Future Foam, Inc., (4) FXI Holdings, Inc., (5) Hickory Springs Manufacturing Company, (6) Leggett & Platt,

Incorporated, (7) Mohawk Industries, Inc., (8) Vitafoam (Vitafoam Products Canada Limited, and Vitafoam, Inc.), and

(9) Woodbridge (Woodbridge Foam Corporation, Woodbridge Sales & Engineering, Inc., and Woodbridge Foam

Fabricating, Inc.). Together, these “Additional Settling Defendants” will be paying a total of $151,250,000 into the

Settlement Fund. There are no other Defendants that have not settled.

What is the lawsuit about?Several individuals and businesses (“Plaintiffs”) brought claims on behalf of a Class of end-user “indirect” purchasers

of products that contain flexible polyurethane foam manufactured or supplied by the Defendants. These products

include bedding (for example, mattresses, mattress toppers, or pillows) carpet underlay (also called carpet padding or

carpet cushion), and upholstered furniture (for example, a sofa with foam cushions).

Plaintiffs claim Defendants engaged in a conspiracy to: (i) increase prices of flexible polyurethane foam and (ii) not compete

for, or “allocate,” customers. Plaintiffs contend Defendants violated numerous States’ antitrust and consumer protection laws.

Defendants deny these claims and deny they are liable to Plaintiffs in any way. The Court has not decided who is right.

Who is included in the lawsuit?YOU are included in the lawsuit and may be entitled to money IF:

1. You purchased one or more of the following products containing flexible polyurethane foam that was manufactured

in the United States: upholstered furniture (such as a couch with foam cushions), carpet underlay (foam padding), or

bedding products (such as a foam mattress or pillow), and

2. You are the end-user of the product that you purchased, meaning you did not buy it for resale to someone else, and

3. You made your purchase in AL, AZ, CA, CO, DC, FL, HI, IL, IA, KS, ME, MA, MI, MN, MS, MO, NE,

NV, NH, NM, NY, NC, ND, OR, RI, SD, TN, VT, WV, or WI, and

4. You made your purchase during the time period January 1, 1999 to August 1, 2015.

What do the Settlements provide?Defendants in the nine Settlements will pay a total of $151,250,000. If the Plan of Allocation is approved by the Court,

payments will be made to each Claimant from each Settlement pro rata based on the number of valid claims filed and

the amounts paid for qualifying products. You can obtain more details about the Plan of Allocation at

www.PolyFoamClassAction.com, or by calling 1-866-302-7323.

The Settlement Fund may also be used to pay for: (1) the cost to administer the Settlements, (2) attorneys’ fees, costs, and expenses,

and (3) awards to Class Representative Plaintiffs. Plaintiffs’ counsel will request attorneys’ fees not to exceed thirty percent (30%)

of $151,250,000, plus reimbursement of costs and expenses. The Court will then decide a reasonable fee and expense award.

How can I get a payment? You must submit a Claim Form to get a payment. You can submit a claim online or by mail. The deadline to submit a claim

is FEBRUARY 29, 2016. Claim Forms are available at www.PolyFoamClassAction.com, or by calling 1-866-302-7323.

Who represents you?

The Court has appointed Marvin A. Miller of Miller Law LLC to represent the Plaintiff Class.

What are your options?

1. Participate. If you made purchases that include you in this lawsuit and you do not timely request to be excluded from

the Settlements, then you will automatically be bound by the terms of the Settlements. You will also be legally bound

by all orders and judgments of the Court. You will not be able to sue the Additional Settling Defendants in any other

lawsuit for conspiring to fix prices or allocate customers of flexible polyurethane foam. In order to get a payment from

the Settlement Fund, you must submit a Claim Form.2. Don’t Participate. If you do not want to be a part of one or more of the nine Settlements, you may request to be

excluded. If you are excluded from a Settlement, you will not be bound by or benefit from that Settlement, or any other

Court orders relating to that Settlement, but you will keep your right to sue or resolve your claims on your own against

that Additional Settling Defendant. To see the requirements for submitting a valid request to exclude, visit

www.PolyFoamClassAction.com, or call 1-866-302-7323. Requests to exclude must be in writing and received by

NOVEMBER 25, 2015.

Court Hearing

The Court will hold a hearing to decide whether to approve the nine proposed Settlements. The hearing will be on

DECEMBER 15, 2015, at 10:00 a.m. at the Ashley U.S. Courthouse, 1716 Spielbusch Avenue, Toledo, Ohio 43604.

The Court may change the date, time, or location of the hearing. To obtain the most up-to-date information regarding

the hearing date and location, please visit www.PolyFoamClassAction.com, or call 1-866-302-7323.

the COLBERT (Combined Operational Load-Bearing External Resistance Tread-mill). Virgin America founder Richard Branson christened an aircraft Air Colbert. Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream cre-ated “Americone Dream” for him. There is even a species of spider bearing his name: Apostichus stephencolberti.

By start-ing his own Super PAC in 2011—“Ameri-cans for a Better Tomorrow, Tomorrow”—he taught us about the lax regulations gov-erning political fundraising organizations and, in doing so, raised more than $1 mil-lion in contributions from the Colbert Nation. (The money went to satirical political ads and charity.) He took us to Iraq, where, at the order of President Barack Obama, he received a buzz cut from U.S. Gen. Ray Odierno.

Colbert defies every stereo-type of a comedian: He’s not cranky, depressed or cynical. He lives a normal life in sub-urban New Jersey, with his wife, Evelyn McGee- Colbert, and their three children, Madeline, Peter and John, in a town where some kids may know him only as their Sunday school teacher.

The youngest of 11, he grew up in Charleston, S.C. When he was 10, his father,

James Colbert, M.D., and his brothers, Paul, 18, and Peter, 15, were killed in a plane crash. “After that, I just didn’t do any homework,” he has said. He turned to books, and became obsessed with J.R.R. Tolkien. He can decimate anyone when it comes to Lord of the Rings trivia, and once cleared up a point that had mystified Peter

Jackson, direc-tor of the films.

Last year, in the weeks before The Col-bert Report was ending, fans were horrified by rumors that he would kill off “Stephen Colbert.” But perhaps because he

understands the nature of fandom (being a fan himself ), he not only let the character live, he granted him immor-tality and sent him soar-ing into the sky on a sleigh piloted by Santa.

On that last episode, Colbert’s face was tinged with sadness when he looked into the camera (directly at me, of course) and thanked, “you, the Colbert nation. We couldn’t have done it without you. ”

Now, with his alter ego safely ensconced in eternity, on Sept. 8 we’ll meet the real Stephen Colbert. And if he managed to seduce us as a bombastic, self-obsessed ego-maniac, imagine how compelling he’ll be when he gets to be himself. I can hardly wait.
