WALTER SCOTT’S

In Pixels, open-ing on July 24, the world is under attack by aliens who misinterpret classic arcade games (think Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Space Invaders and Centi-pede) as a declaration of war. So it’s super-gamer Ludlow Lamonsoff, played by Josh Gad, 34 (the voice of Olaf in Frozen), to the rescue! He joins Adam Sandler, Kevin James and Peter Dinklage to save the world in this live action/computer-generat-ed adventure. How would you describe Ludlow? “There were four guys who were all big ‘arcaders’ growing up, and Ludlow was the young prodigy. Now he’s a con-spiracy theorist, who is actually proven correct.”

Did Pixels have games for you to play between takes? “There was an amaz-ing set that was stacked with arcade games. It was absolutely the coolest thing ever to go back to my childhood and play all the games that I grew up playing.”

So what do you think: Is there life out there? “I believe we’d be pretty selfi sh

and naïve to imagine that we’re the only ones in this gigantic universe.”

At one point, you almost quit the business. Now you’re the star of The Comedians with Billy Crystal on FX, and you were an audience favorite in Disney’s Frozen. “I’m the luckiest guy I know. I sat in the theater as a child watching this animated Disney movie, Aladdin, where the genie rocked my world. I thought, ‘Man, I want to do that one day.’ And I remember very vividly watching Comic Relief and seeing Billy Crystal, and now I’m doing that.”

A: Get your subscription going—the former Dawson’s Creek star, 36, makes her return to TV with a season-long stint on Showtime’s Ray Donovan, airing Sunday nights. She plays a “complicated businesswoman” named Paige, who requires special services that only “fi xer” Donovan (Liev Schreiber) knows how to provide.

Q: Is Katie Holmes’ guest role on Ray Donovan for the whole season? If so, I need to get Showtime.

—Michelle W., Charlotte, N.C.

The talented William Hurt is

one of my favorite actors. What’s next for him?

—Holly H., Lincoln, Neb.

A: The Academy Award winner is back on TV in an

eight-part miniseries, Humans, airing Sunday nights on AMC. It takes

place in a parallel universe where science has already

created Synths (robots), who look human and

function—mostly—as such. Hurt, 65, has given some

thought to the idea: “It’s nice to have somebody

help you do the dishes, although it would be much

nicer to have a talk with somebody who understands

your fears and sorrows.”

True Detective (HBO)Music supervisor T Bone Burnett selected Leonard Cohen’s moody “Nev-ermind” as the theme song for season 2 of the hot detective drama. A track from Cohen’s album Popular Problems(2014), it’s also available on Amazon as a single. A soundtrack with songs from both TD seasons goes on sale Aug. 14.

Hawaii Five-0 (CBS) The theme for the new Hawaii Five-0 is actu-ally the original theme from the 1968 to 1980 series, newly recorded from the original CBS Orchestra charts. The song was also recorded by the Ventures in 1969 and became a No. 3 pop

hit. Both versions are available from iTunes.

Orange Is the New Black (Net-fl ix) Unlike many theme songs, “You’ve Got Time” was written specifi cally for the series by Regina Spektor on request from series creator Jenji Kohan. It’s available online at Amazon and iTunes.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netfl ix) The husband of series cre-ator Tina Fey, composer Jeff Richmond, wrote the perky theme song, and viral masterminds the Gregory Brothers (of “Bed Intruder Song” and

“Winning” fame) put their unique spin on it, releas-ing it as a band called N.Y. Cult. Download it at Amazon.com.

Game of Thrones (HBO) Composed for the popu-lar fantasy TV series by Ramin Djawadi, the song, called simply

“Main Title,” is avail-able from Amazon on the soundtrack albums for the series—to date, there have been fi ve, one for each TV season.

Outlander (STARZ) Composer Bear McCreary combined an old Scottish song with a poem by Rob-ert Louis Stevenson, then got his singer-songwriter wife, Raya Yarbrough, to sing it. “Skye Boat Song” can be purchased from Amazon or iTunes.

Doctor Who (BBC America) Australian-born composer Ron Grainer’s theme to the long-running BBC sci-fi

series has been used, with various tweaks and instrumental enhance-ments over the years, as the show opener since the fi rst episode in 1963. It’s available on the new Doctor Who Series 8soundtrack, available from Amazon and iTunes.

We’ve always hummed along to our favorite TV theme music, from The Brady Bunch

and Cheers to M*A*S*H and Mission: Impossible. Now technology allows us to instantly stream it,

download it—and own it. Here are 10 top TV tunes and where you can nd them online.Name that Tune!

The Big Bang Theory (CBS) The full version of “History of Everything,” composed and performed by Barenaked Ladies, is avail-able on the band’s Hits From Yesterday & the Day Before album (2011), available from Amazon and iTunes.

Modern Family (ABC) Singer/song-writer Gabriel Mann, a member of alterna-tive rock band the Rescues, was asked to write the show’s peppy theme by series creators Steven Levi-tan and Christopher Lloyd after an intro-duction by director Jason Winer. You can fi nd it on TV Tunesters Vol. 12: Television’s Greatest Themes (2012), available at Amazon and iTunes.

CSI: Cyber (CBS) This remix of the Who’s “I Can See for Miles,” written by Pete Townshend for the band’s 1967 album The Who Sell Out, is the fourth song by the band to be used for a CSI se-ries—and the group’s biggest-selling song in the U.S. It’s avail-able on Amazon and iTunes.

What’s high-powered Arianna Huffington’s secret to success? “Sleep,” she says, “ranks number one.” Coming from the founder of the Huffington Post website, which famously helped fuel our ever-connected culture, it’s an especially bold statement. for coming to work drunk,” she says. “When people come to me and say, ‘Ach, I’ve been working around the clock,’ I say to them, ‘That’s so sad. Why are you so disorganized? Why are you managing your life that way?’”

Huffington’s own wake-up call came in 2007, after she collapsed from exhaus-tion during the crazed early days of HuffPo. In addition to spreading her sleep gospel on the site and in a new online course on oprah.com, the single mother of two grown daughters is writing a book on the importance of sleep (April 2016).

“When I get enough sleep, I’m better at everything,” she says. “I’m better at running the Huffington Post, I’m more creative, I’m less reactive, I’m better with my children.”

Sleep's SuperpowersHuffington is not the only one touting sleep’s superpow-ers. Researchers have found connections between sleep and heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, depres-sion, poor memory, weight gain—and even shortened lifespan. According to a study published earlier this year by the American Psychological Association, sleep has been proven to be the single most important factor in predicting longevity.

Given the good news about sleep, statistics about Ameri-can sleep habits are particular-ly alarming. According to our recent Parade poll, 95 percent of respondents wanted to get more sleep, yet 38 percent reported getting five hours or less of sleep each night.

Her Sleep SecretsSo, what can the 15,000 peo-ple who responded to our poll learn from Huffington about

What’s high-powered Arianna Huffington’s secret to success? “Sleep,” she says, “ranks number one.” Coming from the founder of the Huffington Post website, which famously helped fuel our ever-connected culture, it’s an especially bold statement. Huffington, 65, whose offices are now outfitted with nap rooms,

and who does not require employees to be on email after hours, has come to see sleep-deprivation as an emblem of stupidity, not success. Gone are the days when employees are congratulated for working 24/7. “That’s the mental equivalent of congratulating someone

riannaBetter Than Counting Sheep? Here is the truth about six popular sleep aids.

1. SOOTHE YOURSELF WITH SOUNDS Many people swear that white noise or relaxing music helps them fall asleep. “While there’s no hard data, we do know that white noise helps to buffer intrusive noise from the outside,” says Janet Kennedy, Ph.D., a psychologist/sleep trainer with NYC Sleep Doctor. As for how to block out the noise, the experts are of mixed minds. Sleep doctor/clinical psychologist Michael Breus, Ph.D., thinks that SleepPhones, wireless headphones wrapped in a soft, stretchy headband ($40, sleepphones.com), might do the trick. “I love these. While they look a little '80s, they’re fun and effective,” he says. Kennedy doesn’t recommend wearing headphones that are hooked to your phone. She prefers a white noise machine, like a Dohm-DS Sound Conditioner ($50, marpac.com).

2. SIP SOME TEA It’s true, noncaffeinated tea may help you fall to sleep. “Certain types of tea, such as chamomile, are believed to be especially relaxing,” says Kennedy. “But it is the ritual that is most beneficial. The tea becomes a relaxation cue.” One option: Yogi Bedtime tea—a cup contains valerian and organic chamomile, both widely shown to help prompt sleep ($4 for 16 bags, amazon.com).

3. SNIFF ESSENTIAL OILS Multiple studies have shown that aro-matherapy can help treat insomnia. One to try: Place a drop of Sleep Remedy by H. Gillerman Organics on a tissue and drape it near your nose. The combination of blood orange, clary sage and lavender may help you drift off ($48, hgillermanorganics.com).

4. TAKE A BATH A good soak in a tub of warm water is an old-fashioned way to help prompt sleep. “The rapid rise in body temp while you’re in the tub followed by rapid cooling after the bath could help you fall asleep more quickly,” Kennedy says.

5. BLOCK THE LIGHT Can wearing an eye mask improve your sleep? Maybe so, since your body responds to light even when your eyes are closed, Kennedy says. “Light also affects melatonin levels, compromising sleep duration and quality,” she says. Pure Care offers a twist on the traditional sleep mask: a cooling, scented gel pack ($40, purecare.com).

6. SIP SOME CHERRY Drinking just one glass of tart cherry juice (particularly Montmorency cherries) may improve your sleep thanks to the high levels of melatonin in it, according to a recent study in which 20 individuals consumed either a placebo or tart cherry juice concentrate for seven days. Among those who drank cherry juice, the total melatonin content in their urine was significantly elevated. And, if none of these remedies work, it may just be that counting sheep is worth a try. “Doing something to focus your mind away from stressful thoughts or pressure to sleep is helpful,” Kennedy says. “It stops the anxious thought process and allows the body’s fatigue to take over.”—Lambeth Hochwald

sleep? Almost every night, this media mogul, author of 14 books, TV personality, TED talker, political activist and mother of two clocks a good eight hours of ZZZs. (And, no, she doesn’t take any sleep meds, unlike 60 percent of the respondents in our poll.) Here’s how she does it.

1. She knows her sleep IQ Through trial and error, Huffington has learned that she needs a solid eight hours of sleep, so she tries to go to bed by 10:30 or 11 p.m. “My day starts the night before. What time I go to bed de-pends entirely on what time I need to get up.”

2. She has a routine It’s essential to have wind-down time—“something to say we are now turning off,” Huffington says. It can be a long shower, maybe meditat-ing—whatever works for you. She turns off all her digital devices, takes a hot bath with soothing bath salts and a flickering candle, puts on her nightgown, and reads a little from an actual old-fashioned, non-digital book.

3. She has a no-device ruleYou will not find Huffington checking her phone before bed. In fact, she has given old-fashioned alarm clocks as gifts to inspire friends and colleagues to not use their smart phones for wakeup calls. “I like to say, gently escort all your devices into

another room,” she says. Charging your cellphone elsewhere removes any temptation to check it once you’re under the covers—and it eliminates that electronic

glow, which can keep you awake. Computer light obstructs the body’s produc-tion of melatonin, which promotes sleep.

4. She makes tradeoffsGetting more sleep may mean not watching your favorite show or getting through your latest batch of emails. The point is, “It’s within our control,” Huf-fington says. For her, it means not knowing the latest dark twist on House of Cards or excusing herself from dinner with friends a bit early. And

8 | JULY 19, 2015

she follows this common-sense rule: Don’t burn the candle at both ends. “If you’re going out partying one night, organize your life around what time you go to bed the next night.”

5. She keeps it coolStudies show that a slight drop in room temperature helps us go to sleep and sleep well. Huffington doesn’t like run-ning air conditioning in her bedroom while she sleeps, so she runs it during the day to get the room cooled down.

6. She is a fan of nappingExperts say even a short nap can go a long way in recharging the body. The good news: More and more enlightened com-panies and colleges, including the Huffington Post, Google, Procter & Gamble, Facebook and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, provide sleep pods, nap rooms or cots for a rejuvinating snooze. Huffington takes occasional naps on her office couch (“that way I don't occupy the nap rooms, which are always in high demand”). She leaves the curtains open in her glass office so “it’s clear to the newsroom that far from any stigma being attached to napping, it’s the best thing we can do to recharge ourselves.” (Visit Parade.com/sleep for a napping how-to.)

For Huffington, the payoff from getting enough sleep has been enormous. “When I’m sleep deprived I find I’m not as joyful,” she says. “Now I love feeling grateful for everything in my life.”

Sex or Sleep?Sleep (30 percent) beat sex (26 percent) when we asked poll-takers what they’d rather have more of—a sure sign of a sleep-deprivation crisis! But even more re-spondents (34 percent) chose lose 15 pounds. The upshot of that? Not getting enough sleep can actually cause weight gain. Not only do foggy brains drive high-carb choices (“That donut is just what I need to get me going this a.m.”), sleep deprivation prompts your body to make more ghrelin, the hormone that tells you it’s time to eat—and eat. Only 9 percent of respondents chose get a raise as their first choice.

If you think of ramen as a cheap brick of dried noodles, you haven’t enjoyed a soul-satisfying bowl of one of the ho est food trends around. These days, you can nd ramen at Japanese-style noodle bars and even chain restaurants, and it’s a popular late-night snack. Making ramen at

home is relatively simple, and it just might help you sleep. The miso and egg are excellent sources of tryptophan (the snooze-inducing ingredient in turkey), and the complex carbs in the noodles help your brain convert tryptophan to the hormones serotonin and melatonin, which help regulate sleep.

www.SchiffGlucosamineSettlement.com

A Settlement has been reached in class action lawsuits against Schiff Nutrition International, Inc., Schiff Nutrition Group, Inc., Reckitt Benckiser LLC and their affliates (Schiff) regarding their joint health products. The lawsuits claim that the labeling and packaging of these joint health products contain false, deceptive and misleading statements and do not warn consumers about the potentially harmful side effects. Schiff denies all of the claims in the lawsuits and any wrongdoing. The Court has not decided who is right. WHO IS INCLUDED? You are included in the Settlement Class if you are a resident of the United States who purchased for personal use, and not for resale or distribution, a Move Free, Move Free Advanced, Pain Free, Lubrifex, Great American Nutrition, Metaform, Muscle Tribe, Victory, Schiff, Kirkland, Member’s Mark or Spring Valley brand joint health product between January 1, 2005 and May 27, 2015. A complete list of all joint health products included in the Settlement (“Covered Products”) is available at www.SchiffGlucosamineSettlement.com or by writing to Schiff Nutrition International Consumer Settlement Administration, P.O. Box 43352, Providence, RI 02940-3352.WHAT DOES THE SETTLEMENT PROVIDE? Schiff has agreed to a Settlement Fund of $6,510,000 to pay all costs associated with this Settlement. Settlement Class Members who submit a timely and valid Claim Form with proof of purchase, such as a cash register receipt, the box or bottles of a Covered Product containing a readable UPC code and lot number, or documentation showing purchase of the Covered Product and the date and location of that purchase, may claim $10 per bottle of Covered Product for up to fve bottles (up to $50 total). Settlement Class Members who submit a timely and valid Claim Form without proof of purchase may claim $3 per bottle of a Covered Product for up to four bottles (up to $12 total). If the total dollar value of valid Claim Forms plus Notice and Administrative Costs, Attorneys’ Fees Award and Incentive Awards exceeds $6,510,000, the payment to each Settlement Class Member who submitted a valid Claim Form will be proportionately reduced until the total amount paid under the Settlement equals $6,510,000. If the total dollar value of valid Claim Forms plus Notice and Administrative Costs, Attorneys’ Fees Award and Incentive Awards is less than $6,510,000, the payment to each Settlement Class Member who submitted a valid Claim Form with proof of purchase will increase (up to triple the amount of the original claim). If, after increasing these payments, the total payment amount is still less than $6,510,000, the payment to each Settlement Class Member who submitted a valid Claim Form without proof of purchase will increase (up to double the amount of the original claim). If, after increasing the payment for all valid claims, the total payment amount is still less than $6,510,000, the balance will be distributed on a pro rata basis (divided proportionately among the number of Claim Forms submitted and the dollar amount of those claims) to all Settlement Class Members who submitted a timely and valid Claim Form. In addition to payments, Schiff has agreed to certain changes to the marketing and packaging for the Covered Products. HOW DO YOU GET A PAYMENT? You must submit a timely and valid Claim Form by September 24, 2015. Complete and submit your Claim Form online at www.SchiffGlucosamineSettlement.com, download a Claim Form from the website or get one by calling 1-877-219-9780, or by writing to Schiff Nutrition International Consumer Settlement Administration, P.O. Box 43352, Providence, RI 02940-3352. YOUR OTHER OPTIONS? If you do nothing, your rights will be affected and you will not get a settlement payment. If you do not want to be legally bound by the Settlement, you must exclude yourself from it. The deadline to exclude yourself is September 24, 2015. Unless you exclude yourself, you will not be able to sue or continue to sue Schiff for any claim resolved by this Settlement or released in the Second Amended Settlement Agreement and General Release. If you exclude yourself, you cannot get a payment from the Settlement. If you stay in the Settlement (i.e., don’t exclude yourself), you may object to it by September 24, 2015. More information is in the detailed notice and Second Amended Settlement Agreement available at www.SchiffGlucosamineSettlement.com or by writing to Schiff Nutrition International Consumer Settlement Administration, P.O. Box 43352, Providence, RI 02940-3352.THE COURT’S FAIRNESS HEARING. The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California, located the Edward J. Schwartz Federal Courthouse, 221 W. Broadway, San Diego, California 92101 will hold a hearing in this case (Lerma v. Schiff Nutrition International, Inc., et al., No. 3:11-cv-01056-CAB-MDD), on October 30, 2015 at 10 a.m. to consider whether to approve: (1) the proposed Settlement; (2) Settlement Class Counsel’s request for attorneys’ fees of up to 33% of the $6,510,000 Settlement Fund as well as costs; and (3) a payment of up to $10,000 from the Settlement Fund for the Named Plaintiffs (Luis Lerma, Nick Pearson and Muriel Jayson). You may appear at the hearing or hire an attorney, at your expense, to appear or speak for you at the hearing, but you do not have to.WANT MORE INFORMATION? Go to the website, call or write to Schiff Nutrition International Consumer Settlement Administration, P.O. Box 43352, Providence, RI 02940-3352.

A friend from South America says more stars are visible from the southern hemisphere than from the northern one. I disagree. Aside from more lights in North America, which I realize may obscure our view from some locations, how can this be possible?

—M. L., Santa Fe, N.M.

More stars are indeed visible with the unaided eye from the southern hemisphere, but not because more stars exist in that direction of the universe. The reason is that the South Pole is oriented toward the center of the Milky Way, our own galaxy. It’s easier to see those relatively nearby stars than stars that are farther away.
