WALTER SCOTT’S

WALTER SCOTT ASKS ...

JAY LENOThe former Tonight Show host, 64, has returnedto TV with Jay Leno’s Garage, Wednesday nights on CNBC, on which he gets to talk about some of his favorite things: automobiles. When did your love affairwith cars start? “I grew up in New England in a rural area where the car was our iPhone. Now kids go places virtually—we had to go places in reality. I was at the DMV at 8 a.m. on my 16th birthday.”

How many cars do you own? “I’ve got about 140 cars and about 170 mo-torcycles. Some of them are valuable and some are just old cars that I like, like Corvairs, cars that are interesting or that have a fun story.”

Is car culture different today than when you were growing up? “Yeah. When I was a kid, there were car songs: ‘409,’ ‘G.T.O.,’ ‘Little Deuce

Coupe.’ Even kids who knew nothing about cars pretended to, because girls liked guys with cars. Now it’s more computers and things of that nature. It’s not better or worse, just different.”

How is Jay Leno’s Garage different than other shows about cars? “It’s just two guys talking about cars and motorcy-cles. Laurence Fishburne is a motorcyclist like I am, so I said, ‘Do you want to come down and ride some bikes? We’re not going to talk about The Matrix; I’m not going to ask you about your career.’”

Do you watch any late-night talk shows now? “I watch them all.”

I heard that Kirsten Dunst will be in the

new Fargo. What kind of role will

she play?—Eva Hagens, Tonopah, Nev.

A: A fun one, according to the 33-year-old actress, best known for her role as Mary Jane Watson in the Spider-Man franchise. When the Emmy-winning FX series kicks off its second season tomorrow night, she’ll be starring as Peggy Blomquist, a Minnesota hairdresser who sets off a wild chain of events when she acci-dentally runs over a mobster. Dunst says she wants audiences to enjoy her character as much as she did. “I want them to giggle,” she says. “I want them to be on Peggy’s side.”

Q

1. Founder Robert “Kool” Bell went by the name Tamango until he met a guy who went by the name of Cool. Bell bor-rowed the name but spelled it with a K.

2. Members of Kool & the Gang have known each other since grade school in Jersey City, N.J.

3. Previous band names include the Jazz Birds, the Jazziacs and Kool & the Flames.

It’s ‘Celebration’ Time!Grammy-winning band Kool & the Gang, whose hits include such great tunes as “Ladies’ Night,” “Jungle Boogie” and “Celebration,” have something of their own to celebrate: more than 50 years of togetherness and induction into the New Jersey Hall of Fame on Oct. 22. Here are fi ve fun facts about the funk-pop group.

Q: As the new host of America’s Funniest Home Videos, what is Alfonso Ribeiro’s favorite kind of video to watch?

—Miriam L., Dover, Del.

A: The former Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star and Dancing With the Stars champ, 44,

says the most entertaining videos are what he calls “epic fails,” when people attempt something “monumental” that ends up being monumentally stupid. “I love those,” he ad-mits. America’s Funniest Home Videos premieres its 26th season tonight on ABC.

4. Band member Dennis “Dee Tee” Thomas is a self-taught sax player who—not knowing better—originally played with the mouthpiece upside down.

5. The original name for the 1983 hit “Joanna” was “Dear Mom.”

The Comic Book Story of Beer: The World’s Favorite Beverage From 7000 BC to Today’s Craft Brewing Revolution (Ten Speed Press) gives the history of beer a refreshing illustrated makeover. Jonathan Hennessey created the new book with brewmaster Mike Smith and artist Aaron McConnell. “Beer has long been the drink of the people,” Hennessey says. “Comics are the literary art form of the people. They’re like two great friends you’ve always wished you could introduce.” We’ll drink to that. Go to Parade.com/beer for more books.

ack Black is certain that his new movie, Goosebumps, will scare kids—but not too much. “I thought it would be fun to do a kids’ movie that was scary in the right amounts,” he says. “My sons are 7 and 9 years old, and they love a little spooky in their movies. Goosebumps felt like a perfect project, scary and funny—a great combo for me.”

In Goosebumps, opening Friday, Oct. 16, Black

plays R.L. Stine, a fi ctionalized version of the real-life writer of popular children’s books, whose works are stuff ed with frightening monsters from his dark imagination. When the monsters are accidentally “released” from his books and run amok, terrorizing the town, Black’s movie daughter, Hannah (Odeya Rush), her neighbor friend (Dylan Minnette) and a pal (Ryan Lee) join him on a frantic mission to force them back inside.

I play a guy with a dark past and a brilliant mind, wrestling with his own demons, literally.” Black is sitting in a quiet café on a very hot afternoon in an upscale neighborhood in the hills of Los Angeles. e actor lives a few blocks away in a seven-bedroom mansion with his wife, Tanya, and their

two sons, Samuel and omas. Clean-shaven and tidy, looking a decade younger than his 46 years, he is soft-spoken and stares intently when he listens.

Like the character he plays in Goosebumps,Black has his own darkness, fears and a demon or two. He was 10 years old when his parents, aerospace engineers Judith Love and omas Black, divorced. By the time he was 14, he was struggling with substance abuse and other diffi culties.

“I remember just lots of turmoil from that time period,” he says. “I was having a lot of troubles with cocaine . . . I was hanging out with some pretty rough characters. I was scared to go to school [because] one

of them wanted to kill me. I wanted to get out of there.”

His parents enrolled him in Poseidon, a highly regarded

private school for “troubled youth” in Los Angeles. “Most of the other kids there were expelled from other schools, but I went voluntarily,” he says. “It was a place to press the restart button.”

SoulSearchingTurninghimself around took a few years and some

deep soul searching. “Being raised a Jew, I didn’t have any kind of confessional. I couldn’t talk to my parents about the things that I was most guilty about. My dad loved me very much, but I needed someone who wasn’t judgmental at all, who wasn’t going to be

disappointed with me.” Black turned to a school therapist. “I spilled my guts, telling him I felt guilty about stealing from my mom to get money for cocaine. I cried like a baby. It was a huge release and a huge relief. I left feeling euphoric, like an enormous weight had been lifted from me. It changed me.”

After leaving Poseidon,Black completed high school at Crossroads, a private college prep school in Santa Monica known for its programs in the arts. Other Crossroads alumni include actors Liv Tyler, Kate Hudson, Jonah Hill and Zooey Deschanel.

“As far back as I can remember, I loved putting on shows,” he says. “I loved acting. I loved the attention. Maybe there’s a connection in terms of fi nding an escape and always needing to be up onstage. e turning point was when I started thinking acting was what I wanted to do.”

After graduation, he attended UCLA to study theater.

“I didn’t really have a lot of [acting] prospects coming out of high school,” he says. “I needed a place to make some

then children—someone else’s—entered the picture.“Something happened when I was on King Kong,” he says.

“The fellow who plays King Kong, Andy Serkis, was there with his wife and kids, and he let me read a bedtime story to his kids. And I thought, Oh, I should have a kid. I want to have a family. There was an emptiness that started to develop after that. Now I’m happiest just swimming with my boys in the ocean.”

Helicopter DadMany show business marriages fail. His marriage seems to work.

“What makes it work?” he asks. “I love her! I’d had decades of flings where, as soon as it was over, I was looking for the exit. I never feel that need to escape with Tanya.”

Black is devoted to his sons and says that he won’t do a New York–based Broadway show or other long-term project that might require his boys to move from home.

“Sometimes I think maybe I’m a little bit of a helicopter dad hovering above my kids and making sure that they never are in harm’s way,” he says. “But losing a family member is the worst thing I could imagine.”

Black is referring to the death of his older brother, Howard, who died of AIDS in 1989. “I have two gay siblings: my big sister, Rachel, and my big brother, Howard,” he says. “He was a big influence on me. He took me to my first rock concert. I was 11; he was 23. He was so vibrant, creative, amazing. He shaped my taste in music. [Death] didn’t happen quickly. We all saw the deterioration. He was only 31. So very young. We were robbed of something precious. It was devastating. It was hard for all of us, but it was hardest for my mom when we lost Howard. She’s never really recovered.”

His Magical RideBeyond worrying about his family’s safety and happiness, Black has other fears, of course, including the possibility that he “could lose all the money and accoutrements that come with stardom.” But what matters the most, he says, is the sense of adventure. “If you lose the fun of the journey, then there’s no point in going on. It’s the thrill that I love the most. I’ve been on this ride that’s been really magical. If there were no money? I’d be putting on shows! It has to be a story that’s going to blow people’s minds. Then I don’t care if I get paid for it.”

connections. College was very important to my father. I was trying to make him happy. And I thought UCLA could lead to a career.” It didn’t.

The Acting DrugBlack dropped out of UCLA in his sophomore year and joined actor Tim Robbins’ Actors’ Gang, an amateur theater troupe. Two years later, he was cast in Robbins’ political mockumentary Bob Roberts. The 1992 film opened the door to his Hollywood career.

“You can only really make a career of what you like to do,” he says. “I like to act, to get up and put on a show. When I come off a stage or a set after a good scene where I felt like I connected with something emotional and real, I can’t go to sleep that night. It really is a drug unlike anything else. When you get it, when you connect, it is that adrenaline rush of the game. It’s electric.”

In 2005, he began courting Tanya Haden, a gifted cellist and singer and a former classmate at Crossroads almost two decades earlier.

“I didn’t date Tanya or talk to her or anything in high school,” he recalls. “I was pretty shy. I just watched her from afar. We only started dating like 20 years after high school.”

They were married in 2006 in Big Sur, Calif.

“Before Tanya, I had always felt like marriage was not for me,” Black says. “I didn’t like the way it worked out with my parents. I didn’t ever want to be in a divorce, so I was never going to get married.” But

then children—someone else’s—entered the picture.“Something happened when I was on King Kong,” he says.

“e fellow who plays King Kong, Andy Serkis, was there with his wife and kids, and he let me read a bedtime story to his kids. And I thought, Oh, I should have a kid. I want to have a family. ere was an emptiness that started to develop after that.

It has to be a story that’s going to blow people’s minds. en I don’t care if I get paid for it.”

connections.

Two years later, he was cast in Robbins’ political mockumentary Bob Roberts. e 1992 film opened the door to his Hollywood career.

We only started dating like 20 years after high school.”

ey were married in 2006 in Big Sur, Calif.

“Before Tanya, I had always felt like marriage was not for me,” Black says. “I didn’t like the way it worked out with my parents. I didn’t ever want to be in a divorce, so I was never going to get married.” But

Seven Easy Pieces In 1985, Karan’s “chic and easy uniform you turn into a wardrobe” started with a jersey or cashmere (crew neck or turtleneck) bodysuit. The six other wardrobe basics changed from year to year but often included a skirt, trousers, a tailored jacket, a white shirt, a cash-mere sweater and a little black dress or evening dress.

Donna Karan of Seven Easy Pieces and DKNY fame changed the way working women dress. Scratch that—

Karan changed the way women dress, period. e 67-year-old de-signer, philanthropist, yogi, mom and grandmom recently stepped down as chief designer of Donna Karan after 31 years to focus on her philanthropy and her Urban Zen clothing and lifestyle brand. Karan is also the author of a new memoir, My Journey (Ballantine Books), in which she reveals her funny, impul-sive, uncensored and fi ercely loyal (to her friends) side. Describe your perfect Sunday. Sunday for me is a day of rest and family. I’m usually at my home in East Hampton, N.Y., where my daughter Gabby and her husband, Gianpaolo, own a home next door.

You discuss diffi cult family stuff in the book. My life has revolved around birth and death. My dad died when I was just 3. Anne Klein died right before a show and [as associate designer] I had to take over the

collection, and my daughter had just been born. And then 9/11 happened on the day of my show. My husband had died two months prior. My mother passed away on the day of one of my shows. It was very cathartic to talk about it.

You’ve credited women’s instincts for your success. Why? Women feel something internally and per-sonally. For example, you know when something’s wrong with your child. It’s that internal knowing of being the caretaker of so many people. We all have intuition, but I think it’s more evolved in women.

Why did you start Urban Zen? When people saw the homes I had designed [in the Hamptons and Parrot Cay and various NYC apartments], they wanted the prod-ucts. Urban Zen has handmade jewelry, furniture and housewares like dishes and candleholders. And a percentage of everything goes to my foundation [urbanzen.org].

What’s involved in the Urban Zen Foundation? ere are three

initiatives: the past, which is preser-vation of the culture; the present is health care; and third, the future, is education. For example, I’m a fi rm believer in supporting yoga in U.S. schools and all over the world.

How have your Seven Easy Pieces changed? Originally I wanted to create a wardrobe that would take me day to night, work to relaxing. ese days it’s less about day to night and more about season to season. Example: Take a warm-weather sleeveless dress and put a big heavy sweater over it in winter.

Is there anything you’d add to the seven pieces today? I think it’d be those easy pants [fl owing, loose stretchy viscose/spandex fabric with a high rise and wide legs].

You ended all your fashion shows with the words, “To be contin-ued.” What’s next? What’s the next chapter? We’ll see!

Jacques Pépin’s new book, Heart & Soul in the Kitchen (Houghton Mi in Harcourt), is the companion to his new cooking show of the same name on PBS. Pépin, who has hosted 15 cooking series and turns 80 in December, claims this is his last show. And this cookbook might be his most personal. “I decided to gather a collection of recipes that I cook at home today,” he says. His in uences are illustrated in this French sou é with a touch of Mexican heat (until recently Pépin kept an apartment in Playa del Carmen) and all-American sweet corn. —Alison Ashton

Ask MarilynBy Marilyn vos Savant

Say that 100 singles will be attending a party. Ninety of them are attractive. Eighty have a sense of humor. Seventy have a job. Sixty are men. At the very least, how many men are attractive, have a sense of humor and a job?

—R.J., New York, N.Y.What do you think, readers? The answer appears at the end of the column.

Send questions to marilyn @ parade.com

Answer: Zero! It’s possible that every man is either unattractive, has no sense of humor or is unem-ployed. (And yes, we’ve all been to parties like that, haven’t we?)

Have you heard about the “Cheryl’s Birthday” brain- teaser in the news? See Marilyn’s explanation of the answer at Parade.com. Click on “Ask Marilyn.”
