BIBLE STUDY Classes continue May 9th

Our parish Bible Study group will be continuing Deuteronomy. The

Israelites have passed through the desert and are poised to enter the Promised Land at last. Now, Moses

gives them his final instructions from God. All of this leads up to the coming of Jesus and God’s plan for our salvation. This is a great time to join us in

our study of God’s Word for us. We meet each Wednesday morning at Crespi at 10:30.

All are invited!

FAITH FORMATION & LITURGY

Do you want to make a difference in our community? Do you want to grow your understanding of the Mass? We are seeking applicants who are motivated and spiritual individuals to be Lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, Ushers, Sacristans, Acolytes, and Altar Servers.

Lectors proclaim the Word of God at Mass with prayer and preparation at home ahead of time. In this ministry, you will enrich your understanding of scripture and get to share that with the community through the way that you proclaim the readings.

Eucharistic Ministers distribute the Body and Blood of Christ at Mass. In this ministry, you will bring your own devotion to the Eucharist and share that with others and in the process deepen your devotion to the Eucharist.

Ushers welcome everyone to the church, help people find seats, and guide the congregation through the collections and communion procession. In this ministry, you get to meet and build relationships with parishioners and get to welcome visitors to the Peninsula and help them feel at home.

Sacristans do all of the behind the scenes work to setup and prepare for Mass as well as cleaning up. In this ministry, you will get to learn what is used during Mass and why and have the opportunity to take ownership of the care of our sacred vessels.

Acolytes assist the priests and deacons with all needs during Mass. In this ministry, you will be an integral part of the team in the sanctuary and you will get to participate in some way in all of the sacraments which leads to a greater appreciation for the sacraments.

Altar servers are the children grades 3-8 that also help on the altar with the candles and the book. In this ministry, you get to make friends with other altar servers and get to see what happens during Mass up close, a special privilege.

Join in a team of caring and friendly people and at the same time serve the community and the Lord. You will have the opportunity to learn more about your faith and enrich your experience of Mass. Application process includes fingerprinting and an online safe environment training program as well as an in-person training for the specific ministry. To learn more email [email protected]

The Faith Formation team has begun to plan for next year and is looking for new individuals to join our team in building a solid foundation of faith for children, youth and adults seeking full

membership in the Church.

The Marian Alcove As you enter the Basilica there is a little shrine on your left lodged against the outside of the Convento complex where Curator Harry Downie built a small shrine to the Virgin Mary called the Marian Alcove. After he restored the Mission Orchard House (his first restoration) Harry Downie rebuilt the partially-standing adobe building that now houses the First California Library and was his living quarters for a number of years. His next project was in the corner of this building, the Marian Alcove While not too much is known about this shrine, the

following facts have been uncovered from various sources: The statue of Mary holding the child Jesus is Flemish and is carved of wood. It was originally located at the Presidio Chapel in Monterey. Harry

repaired the statue’s hand and crown which had been damaged by vandals. The beam over the alcove is an original wooden beam that Harry salvaged from the Mission ranch barn. The words Ave Maria Purísima (Hail Mary, most pure) are carved into the beam with the letters of the carving joined together and on top of each other so that they look like a single word or an abbreviation. On the right side of the alcove is a sandstone tablet with the Coat of Arms of the Franciscan Order. This was an original artifact of the Mission that had been in the possession of the Munrás family of Monterey who returned it during the restoration. On the left side of the alcove is a sandstone tablet with the Coat of Arms of the Dominican Order. It was carved by Harry to balance and compliment the Franciscan Coat of Arms. The roof of the shrine contains the remaining serviceable tiles from the original Mission tile roof. The stone step at the front of the shrine was the original altar step of the church. The wall behind the shrine is the original adobe wall from a Mission Padre’s cell. The wall contains both original adobe bricks and those fabricated from the original crumbled adobe bricks. *This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association

ANNOUNCEMENTS — DOCENT CORNER

Carmel Mission Book Club adds an Additional Meeting Time Carmel Mission Book Club will continue to read and discuss Rebel in the Ranks at 2pm Saturdays in the MacMahon Center.

We will also be adding a new Book Club meeting time for the month of May, starting Wednesday May 9th at 3:30pm in Crespi Hall. We will read and discuss John Pilch’s Healing in the New Testament. How are we to read and understand stories of Jesus healing the lame, deaf, blind, and those with a variety of other maladies? Pilch takes us beyond the historical and literary questions to examine the social questions of how the earliest followers of Jesus and ancient Judeans understood healing, what roles healers played, and the different emphases on healing among the gospels.

STEWARDSHIP

Top 10 Reasons You Should Join the Choir:

10. It’s exactly like singing in the shower, except you’re wearing a robe and people are actually listening.

9. Intellectual stimulation – when you make music, you are using both sides of your brain simultaneously. 8. Friends! You will no longer be able to complain, “Church is so impersonal – I don’t know anyone in my parish.” 7. You have a guaranteed, reserved seat for both Christmas and Easter. 6. Wearing a robe eliminates making the difficult decision of what to wear on Sunday. 5. The choir definitely has the best parties ever. 4. It is one of the few activities that do not require electronic equipment, expensive power tools, or shopping. 3. Rehearsals are Thursday night, so for an hour you’ll reduce the risk of developing tendonitis from nonstop operation of a television remote control or computer mouse. 2. Singing is heart healthy and there are no monthly membership fees and no sore muscles. 1. St. Augustine said “Singing is praying twice!” Enough said!

So why haven’t you joined the choir?

Choir rehearsals are Thursdays from 7:30 to 9:00 pm. Why not come to a Thursday night choir rehearsal in the Basilica and see for yourselves how much fun it is to be a member of the choir. Questions? The Vigil or Wake at a Catholic Funeral

In our continuing series on Catholic Funeral Rites we look at the Vigil or Wake, the first of three parts of the rite. In future columns we will discuss parts two and three, the Funeral Liturgy (Funeral Mass) and the Rite of Committal (burial or interment). Our goal is to encourage all parishioners to learn about this important part of sacramental life in the Christian community and to be given the resources to make informed decisions for themselves and loved ones.

What is a Vigil? There is a lot of confusion about this part of the funeral. In some communities a rosary for family and friends the afternoon or evening before a funeral Mass, or informal visitation at the funeral home the day or days before has served as the Vigil or Wake. In the Order of Christian Funerals (OCF), the National Council of Catholic Bishops gives us detailed prayers, readings, blessings and music for the Vigil, which can be held in the Church, at the funeral home, at the home of the deceased or another suitable place. The Vigil is generally held the day or days before the Funeral Liturgy. The Vigil is also the appropriate setting for a eulogy or eulogies, for additional non-biblical readings or poems and for favorite non-liturgical music as well as for group recitation of the rosary. The Vigil is the opportunity for the Christian community to keep watch with the family in prayer to the God of mercy and to find strength in Christ’s presence. “We turn to God’s word as the source of faith and hope, as light and life in the face of darkness and death,” says the OCF.

Planning the Vigil During the planning of the Vigil the family and those helping with the funeral rites consider the life of the deceased and the needs of those grieving to choose the most appropriate style of service, along with the readings, music, blessings and other options. The Vigil is not intended to be a duplication of the Funeral Liturgy, which is the celebration of the life promised after death, but rather the time for family, friends and the community to remember the deceased, to ask God for mercy and to console each other during a time of grief.
