Mystagogy, a Greek word meaning “the uncovering of mystery,” encompasses the whole of our faith journey from birth to death. In the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) initiation into the Christian community means living in a state of permanent mystery. From Easter to Pentecost, there is a period of postbaptismal catechesis, or Mystagogy. This is a time for the newly initiated, along with the members of the parish, to become closer together as a faith community to examine more deeply the Gospel, to share in the Eucharist, and to do works of charity. During this joyful time, the enthusiasm of the newly initiated can inspire the faithful of the parish, who in turn can share their experience of the faith with them. Parishioners are invited to attend our Mystagogy sessions with the newly initiated Sundays after the 11am Mass in MacMahon.

Message From the Carmel Mission Parish Finance Council

Dear Camel Mission Parishioner, As Chair of the Finance Council, I want to respond to a number of questions from our fellow parishioners regarding the reorganization plan we have put into place in recent weeks. It was a very difficult decision for everyone involved. After consideration of many options and a detailed review of our financial situation, the plan was unanimously endorsed by the Finance Council. Our plan calls for a reorganization of management and responsibilities to continue to provide support for our ministries and sacraments. We know the lifeblood of the parish are our ministries and the people who so generously donate their time, talent and resources to support all we do for parishioners and our border community. This reorganization will require us to motivate more individuals to serve and help us meet and grow the delivery of sacraments and ministry services that we currently offer. The timing of the plan was necessitated by a serious reduction in parish cash resources. The parish ended last year with a budget shortfall. In the middle of last year, we implemented efforts to increase revenues, reduce third party vendor costs and eliminate all nonessential parish expenditures. The Finance Council hoped that those measures would reduce the gap. Unfortunately, those measures were not enough. The last option we had was to reduce salaries. Those reductions were across the board covering all areas of the parish. Salary expenses in all areas of the parish were reduced. Unfortunately, this meant that several positions needed to be eliminated. These moves were driven by financial necessity rather than the performance of any individual. It was exceedingly difficult to lay off long time valuable employees. Our depleting cash reserves could no longer sustain the expenses involved. Moving forward, we will be asking parishioners and friends to consider becoming more involved in a ministry. We will open new opportunities for service such as volunteering in the Museum Store, welcoming visitors and assisting with weddings and other special events. Our developing website will allow our ministries and the parish to be more transparent and ease the flow of information to all of you. If any of you would like to help us develop any one or more of these new service areas please contact the office and give your name and area or areas of interest. We are very thankful for your continuous generous support. Your great support of this year’s AMA appeal is just one more example. We now will be able to finish the Crespi Parish Hall kitchen and spruce up the bathrooms. That simply would not have been possible without your support. In addition, your weekly plate contributions have been increasing. We are most grateful to all of you who have made an increase during this time of special need for our parish. As we all know, our Carmel Mission is a blessed place. It is a gift to everyone, but, particularly for those of us who are able to regularly participate in the services, sacraments and ministries. We are collectively disappointed and sorry that changes had to be made. This new plan was enacted to protect this beautiful Shrine, Basilica, School and parish facilities and the individuals who actively work to give life to the Mission through the services it provides. Al Nicora Chair, Parish Finance Council Carmel Mission

Annual Ministry Appeal 2018

CONGRATULATIONS ON EXCEEDING OUR FINANCIAL GOAL! We are still asking each and every parishioner to contribute something!

A heartfelt thank you to all of our parishioners who have already donated to this year’s Annual Ministry Appeal. We are so grateful for your generosity. We are thrilled to announce that we have exceeded our $100,000 goal for the 2018 AMA by achieving over $120,000! That is a record for Carmel Mission! Congratulations! As you may recall, there was a second objective: to attain 100% participation from ALL parishioners. While we have exceeded last year’s number of donors by over 150 (another record), that still only represents 50% of our registered parishioners. We ask that you give whatever you can to support our parish. Consider some amount – even if it is just $10 – to be counted as an active supporter of Carmel Mission for this important campaign. Remember, this is the one and only fund raiser we do each year for the parish itself. So, as a parishioner, please do your part! The work on Crespi Hall has begun and we invite you to stop by and see the progress we are making on our updated and safer kitchen as well as the new office space. Although we hit our financial objective, there are sure to be some hidden expenses as there inevitably are on renovation projects such as these, especially with buildings as old as Crespi Hall that didn’t have the safety codes, standards and requirements that we have today. Please consider making your donation today by going to the website, www.carmelmission.org, and scroll down to the bright red Annual Ministry Appeal button. We hope each and every parishioner takes this opportunity to support our parish. Thank you again for your generosity and support.

The Sanctuary of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel

The Carmel Mission Basilica Parish is blessed to have multiple chapels in which to gather both individually and in community to pray, reflect and receive the sacraments. For many parishioners the Blessed Sacrament Chapel is a weekly part of their Parish experience. The Blessed Sacrament Chapel Sanctuary has its own unique history and significant collection of liturgical art. The Sanctuary of the chapel was designed and built by Harry Downie in 1944 shortly after

Chapel was constructed at the appeal of Carl Bensberg the generous benefactor of the chapel. The Blessed Sacrament Chapel was built in memory of his mother, Ann Sutter,

who is buried at the base of the Sanctuary steps. The redwood reredos of the chapel integrates two 17th Century screens from the Philippines. Originally painted green the shade was changed to ‘Old Rose’ by Harry Downie in 1965 by the request of Bishop Clinch a former pastor of the Mission. The gessoes molded screens frame the Baroque styled gilded gold leaf tabernacle. Above the tabernacle, a 13th Century High Gothic Italian diptych (two sided image) painting of the "Twelve Apostles" in set into the bridge between the reredos screens. The “Twelve Apostles" are painted in tempera over gold leaf and the painting was most recently conserved in the late 1980’s. To the west side of the sanctuary chapel can be found what is believed to be the original altar lamp of the Mission.

Lady of Bethlehem Wall Inscriptions If you go into the Lady of Bethlehem Chapel you will find two inscriptions on the wall, some of which is the original writing and some of which has been restored.

First Inscription (on the right). The first is incomplete as the words are partially obliterated. The translator of the first inscription said the spelling was different from that used today. They

also said the last words which are illegible could mean “soul” from a prayer that is typically prayed in Spain today.

O, Corazon de Jesus, siempre ardes y resplanderes, enciende e ilumina el mio …. (illegible) ... de tu Amor Divino.

O Heart of Jesus! Always burning and resplendent, you ignite and illuminate my . . (soul) . . . of your

Divine Love. Angeles y santos, alabemos el Corazon de Jesus . . .

Angels and saints, let us praise the heart of Jesus.. Second Inscription (on the left). This inscription is incorrect probably due to the restorer’s efforts to replicate the original words and a lack of a detailed knowledge of Spanish. The “Alabado” (Praise) was a traditional Mexican hymn that was sung at dawn. The word “Loque” is actually two

words “lo” and “que”, accents are missing and some words (like “y” for “and”) are missing. The words below are corrected.

Alabemos Santo Dios Let us praise Holy God

Lo que están y serán For those who are and who will be

Y Lo que somos And for what we are

Refreshments are provided. All are welcome. Attendance and the book are free; a goodwill donation to cover the book and shipping is requested but not required.
