Today we celebrate Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday in the season of Lent. Traditionally this is an opportunity to set aside the more reflective and penitential aspects of the Lenten season and rejoice in the promise of God’s love and Christ’s resurrection that we look forward celebrating at Easter. We see this reflected in the unique use of the liturgical color of rose, used only on one other Sunday in the year during Advent. If we are seeking a reason to rejoice we need look no further than today’s Gospel reading; “ For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son” and “ For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.” The covenant of love that exists between God and God’s people is brought to complete fruition through Christ, God’s Son. It is hard to think of a greater cause for rejoicing! In the second reading St. Paul reminds the Ephesians that the saving love of God, grace, is given freely as a gift from God, not a reward for works, and thus is completely accessible and offered to all people equally. This love is available to each of us, throughout our lives, even when we forget God; God is waiting for us, watching for us, caring for us. As disciples of Jesus Christ we are called to share the good news of the Gospel with others and what better news could there be than that we are loved? On this Laetare Sunday, how can we be bearers of the good news of God’s love to our community and our world? THE CHRISM MASS derives its name from the blessing and distribution of the Chrism and other oils by the Bishop that occurs during this Mass. The Chrism oil is used for the sacraments, Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Orders (ordinations). The Oil of the Sick is used for the sacrament, Anointing of the Sick. The Oil of the Catechumens is used for Baptisms to strengthen

the candidate to turn towards Christ. Oils have been used for centuries for healing and blessing in various occasions and there are many examples of this throughout scriptures. The oils are all blessed

together and then split up among the parishes in the Diocese so that we are all sharing in each other’s sacramental celebrations during the year. This Mass is done during Holy Week as these oils are presented to the parish community on Holy Thursday and are first used at the Easter Vigil for those being initiated into the Church at that time.

The Irish Connection As we approach St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th of March, we would like to tell you about our “Irish “connection at the Mission. Did you know that each of the pastors of Carmel Mission in the modern era have been Irish? Ever since Msgr. O’Connell in 1933, they all have been of Irish ancestry. Some of them even had a bit of the brogue! Here is the list:

Rev. Msgr. Michael D. O’Connell 1933-1958 Most Rev. Harry A. Clinch 1958-1967 Rev. Msgr. James Marron 1967-1969 Rev. George McMenamin 1969-1973 Rev. Msgr. Eamon McMahon 1973-1989 Rev. Msgr. Declan Murphy 1989-2002 Rev. John Griffin 2002-2013 Rev. Paul Murphy 2013-

The Irish connection does not end there, however. The beautiful gilded bronze tabernacle on the altar was a gift of Doña Maria Antonia Field and it was purchased from J. Gunnings of Fleet Street, a religious supply company in Dublin, Ireland in 1956. The interior has a Celtic cross studded with a large faceted topaz. It was in 1929 that we had a resident priest at the Mission, a fine Irishman named Fr. Michael Murphy. Fr. Murphy probably lived in the building built in 1920 as a residence for visiting priests which is now the Downie Museum. He died in 1933 and is buried in the Mission cemetery. Every year, our local Council of the Knights of Columbus has a St. Patrick’s Day Dinner with corned beef, cabbage and all the trimmings including Irish music, Irish dancing and Irish whiskey in, of course, the Murphy Center. You will notice that most of the trees and flowers at the Mission have green leaves....they’re Irish of course. The angel on the altar reredos is St. Michael, the only one of the Archangels with an Irish name.

There was our famous curator, Sir Harry Downie, K.S.G. who was reputed to be Irish and had more than an normal share of the Blarney. Harry is almost as famous as Fr. Serra, who always secretly wished he was Irish too. This slightly irreverent bit of Mission History was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association

ANNOUNCEMENTS — DOCENT CORNER

Next Selection, Carmel Mission Book Club The next selection for the Carmel

Mission Book Club is Strangers in a Strange Land by Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Chaput offers a compelling reflection on the person of Jesus Christ, the nature of the Church, the urgency of radical faith, and the redemptive power of beauty – all in the spirit of Psalm 8 and the enduring words of Irenaeus: “The glory of God is man fully alive.” The Book Club meets Saturdays at 2pm at MacMahon Center, and begins this selection January 13th. Refreshments are provided. All are welcome. Attendance and the book are free; a goodwill donation to cover the book and shipping is requested but not required.

BLESS YOU! BLESS YOU! Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Because of the current flu epidemic, we will temporarily cease to offer our neighbor a greeting at the beginning of mass and at the Sign of Peace. We will also temporarily cease to offer the chalice at Communion time. As you are probably aware, the State of California has been badly affected by the flu virus, and the above mentioned measures have been taken to safeguard the health of our parishioners and visitors. Please continue to pray for all our sick brothers and sisters. I wish you blessings of good health and great happiness, Fr. Paul, Pastor at Carmel Mission

Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17

According to the Confession of Patrick, when he was about 16, he was captured by Irish pirates from his home in Great Britain, and taken as a slave to Ireland, looking after animals, where he lived for six years before escaping and returning to his family. After becoming a cleric, he returned to northern and western Ireland. In later life, he served as a bishop, but little is known about the places where he worked. By the seventh century, he had already come to be revered as the patron saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick's Day is observed on 17 March, the supposed date of his death. It is celebrated inside and outside Ireland as a religious and cultural holiday.
