Dear Parishioners,

Greetings to you as a cherished member of our parish family! I would like to express my profound appreci-

ation for your generous participation in the ministry of Little Flower Parish this past year through your

presence and giving.

I’m taking this opportunity to ask you to consider your commitment to the life of the parish and to pledge

in your heart to give generously in 2018 in support of the many programs and activities of Little Flower

Parish. Our financial needs are great. Your contributions are absolutely essential to cover all of the expens-

es generated by the operations of the parish. Nothing we do here together is possible without your generous

support.

The various fundraising activities, such as festivals, dances, raffles, etc., are organized to generate income

to help with extraordinary expenses. They are successful in helping meet needs according to your participa-

tion as a parish. In this new year, I invite you to continue supporting us in these community events and to

consider increasing your regular donations, within your ability and as God leads you. If all members in-

crease their regular giving by any amount, it will make a significant difference. We encourage you to

consider setting up an automatic regular donation on our website to facilitate this important commitment.

We also want you to know that we are working to improve our administrative processes and systems. In

particular, we are resolved in this new year to do a better job of communicating with you and to improve

our use of more modern tools! Our efforts now in progress include a new and better office phone system, a

new website, and more informative updates to you, as a member of our parish family. These improvements

are demanding on our limited resources, also.

Would you also please consider making a special gift now toward the expenses of these new commu-

nications tools?

Once more, I am tremendously grateful for your generosity. I implore God our Lord to pour His abundant

blessing on you and your family, repaying you a hundredfold for all that you have shared with us.

Fraternally with my blessing,

Rev. Fr. Luis Gerardo Belmonte-Luna, O.C.D.

Estimados Parroquianos,

do con nosotros.

Fraternalmente con mi bendición,

Rev. Fr. Luis Gerardo Belmonte-Luna, O.C.D.

LENT 2018 FEB.14 – APR. 1 + Raise Up + Sacrifice + Offer

Our observance of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which falls on Feb. 14 this year, and is a day of fast and abstinence for Catholics. At Mass on Ash Wednesday, the imposition of ashes replicates an ancient penitential practice and symbolizes our dependence upon God's mercy and forgiveness.

WHY 40 DAYS On the first Sunday of Lent, in first reading, we hear about God's covenant with Noah, and in the Gospel, we hear about Jesus's journey into the desert. Both the universal flood in the story of Noah and Jesus's journey into the desert lasted 40 days. These are just two examples of the biblical roots that explain why Lent lasts for 40 days. Other references to 40 days in Scripture include:

- the number of days spent by Israel in the desert - the number of days spent by Moses on Mount Sinai - the number of days spent by the prophet Elijah in the desert before going to encounter God on Mount Herob - the number of days of penance of the inhabitants of Nine-veh

ASH WEDNESDAY In the Roman Rite, the beginning of the forty days of penance is marked with the austere symbol of ashes which are used in the Liturgy of Ash Wednesday. The use of ashes is a survival from an ancient rite according to which converted sinners submitted themselves to canonical penance. The act of putting on ashes symbolizes fragility and mortality, and the need to be re-deemed by the mercy of God. Far from being a merely exter-nal act, the Church has retained the use of ashes to symbolize

that attitude of internal penance to which all the baptized are called during Lent.

The faithful who come to re-ceive ashes should be assisted in perceiving the implicit in-ternal significance of this act, which disposes them towards conversion and renewed East-er commitment. (DIRECTORY ON POPULAR PIETY AND THE LITUR-GYPRINCIPLES AND GUIDE-LINES No 125)

PRAY, FASTING AND ALMSGIVING During Lent, we are asked to devote ourselves to seeking the Lord in prayer and reading Scripture, to service by giving alms, and to sacrifice self-control through fasting.

Many know of the tradition of abstain-ing from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to practice self-discipline and fast in other ways throughout the season. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasting tradition in this reflection. In addition, the giving of alms is one way to share God's gifts—not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2446).

FASTING AND ABSTINENCE Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of fasting and abstinence for Catholics. In addition, Fridays during Lent are obligatory days of abstinence. For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.

Photo from the 1931 dedication of the statue of St. Therese that stands atop the smaller, 72-foot tower of the Basilica facing down-town San Antonio. The 1,000-pound statue was cast in bronze in Italy. It was designed by San Antonio craftsman Louis Rodriguez (1893-1984), who carved all the marble in the sanctu-ary including the altar rail, the Infant Jesus of Prague and Lady of Guadalupe altars (in the 1940s) and etched the hundreds of names of donors on the name tiles covering the walls of the Shrine.

Join our Team for the Basilica Renovations Are you interested in taking a leadership or helping role in the capital campaign to raise the funds to renovate the Basilica? Are you in-spired by the thought of helping to plan, or-ganize, and implement this major campaign? Do you have ideas about who else we could get on board that could help drive this effort or thoughts on how we can reach major donors and the greatest numbers of donors? Do you have connections with folks who could also help lead and contribute? We need your help in Identifying and engaging leaders and team members for the campaign.

We are looking for volunteer leadership and others interested in contributing their wisdom, influence and wealth from among our parish community and beyond, to join forces with us for this exciting project. If you are interested in being included on our committees, please email Anna Migeon at [email protected].

Restore the Church Build the Future

The countries in Central and Eastern Europe have faced many years of hardship. They have been op-pressed by czars, radical com-munism, horrendous crimes against humanity, and revolutionary, civil, and world wars. Under communism, organized religion was opposed in favor of atheism to overthrow the power of the Russian Orthodox Church. Since the collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1991, Central and Eastern European countries have been working to rebuild political structures, social welfare, and their economies.

The USCCB Subcommittee on the Church in Central and Eastern Europe funds projects in 28 countries to build the pastoral capacity of the Church and to rebuild and restore the faith in these countries. The funds collected in the Collec-tion for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe are used to support seminaries, youth ministry, social service pro-grams, pastoral centers, church construction and renovation, and Catholic communications projects.

Years after the fall of communism, even though some are now European Union citizens, the Catholics of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union still have great needs. The 2018 Collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe, slated for Ash Wednesday, February 14, will focus on the theme "Restore the Church. Build the Fu-ture."

Week of the Collection This week, our second collection will be for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Your donation today helps restore the Church and build the future in over 25 coun-tries still struggling to recover in the aftermath of communist rule. Funds from this collection help support reconstruction, education, formation, and poverty outreach. For more infor-mation, please visit www.usccb.org/ccee. Thank you for your generosity.

CRS RICE BOWL This Lent, CRS Rice Bowl invites you, your family and com-munity to journey alongside the Good Samaritan, to reflect on the question: Who is my neighbor?

So many of our neighbors are on the move: migrants, refu-gees, internally displaced persons, travelers. The Good Samaritan—a traveler himself, one on the move—shows us what it means to encounter the stranger, to accompany one in need and become a companion on the journey.

Pope Francis has invited Catholics to build bridges of un-derstanding and hospitality with migrants and refugees through “Share the Journey” campaign.

NATIONAL MARRIAGE WEEK 2018 The upcoming observances of National Marriage Week (Feb. 7-14) and World Marriage Day (Sunday, Feb. 11) are an opportunity to focus on building a cul-ture of life and love that begins with supporting and promoting marriage and the family.

Prayer for Married Couples Almighty and eternal God, You blessed the union of married couples so that they might reflect the union of Christ with his Church: look with kindness on them. Renew their marriage covenant, increase your love in them, and strengthen their bond of peace so that, with their children, they may always rejoice in the gift of your blessing. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
