Our psalm refrain today sets the tone for the Ascension as we proclaim jubilantly, “God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord” (Psalm 47). The Ascension celebrates Jesus’ ascending into heaven to be with God. Before Jesus ascends, he gives the disciples very specific directions. He delegates his ministry to them, and to those that they call to join them in ministry. Jesus’ ministry has been handed down through generations and centuries. Jesus’ ministry is the work of the church: to worship and also to make sure that all are taken care of and loved. All of us have been given gifts to share for the benefit of God, the Church, and the community. Our gifts are unique and each gift contributes to the wholeness of our community. St. Paul tells the Ephesians that some of us are called to teach, others to be prophets, still others to be pastors, and the list goes on. As we celebrate Jesus’ ascension into heaven and our continuing his ministry on earth, let us discern how we can best share our own gifts and talents with the church and the community. As we celebrate Jesus’ ascension into heaven and our continuing

his ministry on earth, let us discern how we can best share our own gifts and talents with the church and the community.

BIBLE STUDY Classes continue May 9th

Our parish Bible Study group will be continuing Deuteronomy. The

Israelites have passed through the desert and are poised to enter the Promised Land at last. Now, Moses

gives them his final instructions from God. All of this leads up to the coming of Jesus and God’s plan for our salvation. This is a great time to join us in

our study of God’s Word for us. We meet each Wednesday morning at Crespi at 10:30.

All are invited!

A Note from Our Director of Liturgy and Youth Ministry, Christian Cahill

I am incredibly grateful for my four years here at the Carmel Mission Basilica and particularly for the opportunities to grow in ministry and to develop relationships with many different parishioners. I have especially enjoyed working with our youth and have learned from their energy, questions, and desire to be the best person that they can be. It has also been an honor to be a part of the celebrations for the canonization of St. Junipero Serra. I will be leaving the Carmel Mission Basilica at the end of May in order to further pursue becoming a sister with the Sisters of the Holy Names of

Jesus and Mary. You may know the community from the Villa Maria Del Mar retreat center in Santa Cruz or from Holy Names University in Oakland. They have sisters all over the West Coast of the United States as well as a few places on the East Coast, Canada, Peru, and Lesotho. The mission of the congregation is to seek the full development of the human person through education, social justice, contemplation and the arts, especially with people who are impoverished and marginalized. I would appreciate your prayers as I continue to discern my vocation and likewise, I will keep all of you in my prayers.

The Name of California The term California originally referred to the entire region composed of the current U.S. state of California, plus all or parts of Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and Wyoming, and the Mexican peninsula now known as Baja California. The name California is most commonly believed derived from a storied paradise peopled by black Amazons and ruled by Queen Calafia (or Califia). The myth of Calafia is recorded in a 1510 work named The Exploits of Esplandian, written by Spanish adventure writer García Ordoñez de Montalvo. A popular piece of literature at the time of the conquest of Mexcio, the kingdom of Queen Calafia was said to be a remote island inhabited by griffins and other strange beasts and rich in gold. The myth of Calafia later helped fuel Spanish exploration in the New World. The Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés heard stories of an island populated by women warriors and filled with riches off the northwest coast of today's Mexico. In 1535, he sponsored 3 expeditions to what is now known as the Baja Peninsula in search of this island. While Cortés is credited with the discovery of Baja, he found no island of fabulous riches and black Amazons. In official reports about Cortés' discoveries written in the early 1540s, these new lands are referred

to as "California" likely alluding to Montalvo's imaginary island. When Juan Cabrillo sailed off the coast of Monterey in 1542, he called the entire area California. Sebastian Vizcaíno explored Alta California and landed in Monterey in 1602 where he officially claimed all of California for the king of Spain. Several other origins have been suggested for the word "California" including Spanish, Latin and Aboriginal American origins. Some suggest that

the word California may signify that a place is "hot as an oven" (cali = hot, fornia = oven). It may be derived from caliente fornalia, Spanish for hot furnace, or it may come from calida fornax, Latin for hot climate. All of these are disputed. *This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association

The Junipero Serra School 8th grade trip to

Washington DC, Gettysburg, and Philadelphia provided an important and memorable opportunity

for our students to experience the history and culture of the United States by visiting many of the significant sites, including the Capitol, Arlington

Cemetery, Mount Vernon, Ford’s Theater, the White House, Independence Hall, and Gettysburg. By visiting the memorials and museums, they came away with a greater understanding of the events that have shaped our great democracy. The professional

tour guides that accompanied the students during the trip, engaged them in an informative manner

through story telling of the historical figures and the momentous roles they played during the course of

history.

JSS students traveled with the 7th and 8th grade students from Holy Cross School in Santa Cruz.

Students from both schools gathered for a picture at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.

The JSS students visited the tomb of George Washington at Mount Vernon. The wreath to the

right of the picture was a gift from President Macron of France and was presented at the tomb the day

The Eulogy as part of a Catholic Funeral

In our continuing series on Catholic Funeral Rites we look at the Eulogy, an optional part of the Vigil, which is the first of three parts of the rite. In future columns we will continue the discussion with parts two and three, the Funeral Liturgy (Funeral Mass) and the Rite of Committal (burial or interment). Our goal is to encourage all parishioners to learn about this important part of sacramental life in the Christian community and to be given the resources to make informed decisions for themselves and loved ones.

Do we need a Eulogy? Many people are familiar with funerals where a friend or family member, or maybe multiple friends or family members give a biographical outline of the life and death of the deceased along with remembrances, anecdotes and maybe funny stories. This is not a part of a Catholic Funeral, and in fact eulogies are not to occur during the Funeral Liturgy (Funeral Mass) according to the Order of Christian Funerals from the National Council of Catholic Bishops. The bishops tell us that the focus of the Funeral Liturgy is the celebration of the life to come for the deceased and all who are faithful, as well as to comfort the grieving through the Word of God. Prior to the beginning of a Funeral Mass at the Mission, our Pastor does allow one person selected by the family to share a brief (five minutes or less) remembrance in the context of the deceased person’s faith life.

When can we have a Eulogy? But if those planning a funeral do want to have time for a eulogy or eulogies, the Vigil can be the appropriate time and place. Another setting for the eulogy could be a reception or gathering after the funeral. As we discussed in a previous column, the Vigil can be held in the Church, at the funeral home, at the home of the deceased or another suitable place. The Vigil is generally held the day or days before the Funeral Liturgy (Funeral Mass). The Vigil is also the appropriate setting for additional non-biblical readings or poems and for favorite non-liturgical music as well as for group recitation of the rosary. If you have questions, concerns or suggestions, please call Loretta Hay at (831) 624-1271 x208, leave your name and phone number, and a Bereavement Minister will contact you.
