St. Albert the Great, Bishop and Doctor of the Church (November 15) Albert the Great came from a noble military family. He studied at the University of Padua where he became acquainted with the Dominican Order. He joined the Dominicans even though his family was against it. He became a famous and gifted teacher. One of his most famous pupils was St. Thomas Aquinas. Even during his own time, Albert was known as the “Universal Doctor” because of his great learning. Albert was into everything: biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, geography, economics, politics, logic, and mathematics in addition to theology, Scripture, and philosophy. He spent twenty years writing a collection of all knowledge. His life was not centered on science; it was centered on God. To Albert all of science displayed beautifully the plan and providence of God. Albert was named provincial superior of the Dominican Order in 1254. Three years later he resigned his post so that he could devote more time to study. Then he was appointed a bishop in 1260. As a bishop Albert traveled throughout the diocese on foot and became known as the “Bishop with the Boot.” After two years he was able to go back to writing and teaching until he died. Saint Albert the Great is the patron of scientists, philosophers, students, and medical technicians. Copyright © 1994, Loyola University Press

St. Margaret of Scotland (November 16) Margaret may have been born in Hungary of a German mother. She was the granddaughter of an English king and was brought to England when she was a youth. After the Norman conquest of England, she took refuge in Scotland. In 1070, Margaret married Malcolm III, the king of Scotland. They had two daughters and six sons. Deeply religious, Margaret used her influence to bring the Scottish Church in line with Rome and was also noted for caring for orphans and the poor. Three of their sons became kings, one of whom was considered a saint for building up the Church in Scotland, following in his mother’s footsteps. She died four days after her husband and a son were killed in battle. She was buried at Dunfermline Abbey. Margaret is the patron saint of Scotland. St. Gertrude the Great, Virgin (November 16) When she was five years old, Gertrude was placed in the care of the Cistercian nuns. She was very intelligent and became a great scholar. Then Gertrude became a Benedictine nun herself. At age twenty-six, Gertrude had the first of her deep mystical experiences, which she later wrote about in a book. Christ encouraged her to spend more time studying him. Her life from that point on revolved around the study of Scripture, prayer, spiritual reading, and the liturgy. Her spirituality centered on the love between Christ and her. She saw herself as the bride of Christ. Gertrude had a great devotion to the mystery of the Incarnation, along with the Sacred Heart and the Holy Eucharist. She spread devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus years before St. Margaret Mary, who is most known for this. Gertrude carried her love for Christ to others through the prayers she wrote and through her journal of mystical experiences. Books she wrote show her deep understanding of the Incarnation and Trinity. Saint Gertrude the Great is the patron of the West Indies. Copyright © 1994, Loyola University Press

St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Religious (November 17) Elizabeth’s short life was nonetheless full; she had a happy marriage and children, was a secular Franciscan, and was so devoted to the poor and sick that she gave away royal robes and founded hospitals. The daughter of a Hungarian king, Elizabeth married a nobleman of Thuringia, Louis, at age 14. He complained about the expense of her many charities until he witnessed a miracle involving Elizabeth, bread and roses. After he died during a Crusade, she became a Third Order Franciscan at Marburg, Germany, where she founded a hospital to care for the sick. Elizabeth, who was declared a saint in 1235, is the patron of bakers, young brides, widows, those falsely accused, countesses, and secular Franciscans. St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, Virgin (November 18) Growing up in a prosperous French family, Philippine joined the Visitation nuns, but returned to her family during the French Revolution. In 1804 she entered the Society of the Sacred Heart. After much preparation, she led a missionary journey to Missouri in 1818. She set up the first free school west of the Mississippi, Sacred Heart houses and Novitiate, and a school for Indians. Despite frontier hardships and ill health, she persevered in her early dream of serving Native Americans. Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne is the patron of perseverance amid adversity. You are cordially invited to join us in celebration and blessing of our construction site for our new parish

activities center. Bring a lawn chair if you wish to sit down.

Father Hans, Father Nick, Father Jacob and other members of the clergy and staff will be there with representatives

from the Diocese of Phoenix, Adaptive Architects, Wespac Construction and others.

We will be ready with prayers, gold shovels and construction hats to get this project going for the benefit

of all of our parish and the life of our community.

We will have a light reception following the event.

Give thanks to God and to our generous donors who have made this project possible. We continue to need your

heartfelt prayers and donations to attain our goals and complete this project.

God bless all of you and Thanks Be to God who is always generous and kind to our St Clare of Assisi Community.

Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) A hidden benefit

Why consider transferring funds in your 401K or IRA directly from your account to St. Clare?

You may be able to reduce income taxes by taking all or some of your Required Minimum Distributions as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (“QCD”.) In addition to benefiting St. Clare Parish, a QCD can benefit you because it is excluded from taxable income. The distribution goes directly to St. Clare Parish instead of to you and then to our parish. In addition to not having to pay taxes on the RMD, by reducing taxable income you may be able to derive additional credits or increase allowable deductions. As always, you should consult with your financial advisor for details.
