“God as Comforter, Today and Throughout the Ages.”
Jesus’ coming into the world is so close that we can all
feel it, the anticipation is building and the readings help
us to focus on what Jesus’ birth says about God.
Emmanuel, a name that means “God with us,” is most
often used during Advent. God is with us all year in the
Holy Spirit but particularly in the event of the birth of
Jesus, God chose to be with us in our humanity. This
means that God is with us in our joys and relationships
as well as in our moments of failure and distress.
We ask God to continue to bring us comfort and joy as
Christmas approaches. How are you preparing yourself
for the coming of Jesus into your own heart and life? Photo is of the Nativity Cabinet circa 1930’s by E. Charlton Fortune (1885–1969) Carmel Mission Basilica Museum Collection.

Docent Corner
The Spanish galleons were bringing the
rich treasures of the Philippines to
Mexico by way of the California coast.
These ships needed a safe harbor on
the coast where they could find fresh
water and refuge from English raiders.
Spanish explorer Sebastián Vizcaíno
was commissioned to explore and map
the California coast that Juan Cabrillo had first
reconnoitered 60 years earlier in an effort to
locate such a harbor.
On 16 December 1602, Vizcaíno entered a bay
that he named for the Viceroy of New Spain, the
Count of Monterey (Don Gaspár de Zúñiga).
Upon landing in Monterey, he claimed the
territory of California, Utah, Nevada, parts of
Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming for
Spain.
The expedition encamped for a few days. Most
of the sailors were suffering from scurvy and
many were seriously ill (16 had died on the
journey north). A Mass was said under a large
oak tree overlooking the bay for the expedition’s
200 men in thanksgiving for a safe journey.
This oak has become known as the “Plymouth
Rock of California”. A piece of the tree can be
seen in the Convento museum. The cross that
was planted at the original landing place is
memorialized with an historic marker located
just off Pacific St. in Monterey.
The Carmelite friars accompanying the
expedition ventured south and located an open
area near a river. They named both after their
order – Carmel, since it reminded them of the
location of the Carmelite order’s original home,
Mt. Carmel in the Holy Land. Monterey and
Carmel are thus one of the oldest place names
in America (Jamestown was 1607).
One result of this voyage was enthusiasm for
establishing a Spanish settlement at Monterey
but this was ultimately deferred for another 167
years. Spain became preoccupied with matters
in mainland Europe and for all practical
purposes, California was all but forgotten, until
the day came when Spain was confronted with a
new threat --- Russia, which led to the Portolá
Expedition and Father Serra. But that’s another
story.
This insight into the Mission history was provided by the
Carmel Mission Docent Association.
