Bilingual (Es/En) Mass: 1st & 3rd Saturday of the month, 5:00 pm.

Our Mass structure parallels that of the experience that these two disciples had with Jesus on the way to Emmaus. Jesus meets them on the way and they begin to discuss the scriptures, their interconnectedness, and how that relates to Jesus as well as their life as disciples. When they arrive in Emmaus, they shift into a meal where Jesus blesses, breaks, and offers the bread to them. Immediately they recognize that this is Jesus and that he had been with them all along. In the Liturgy of the Word, we proclaim scriptures and relate them together connecting them with Jesus and our lives as disciples. In the Liturgy of the Eucharist, we break and share the Body and Blood of Jesus in the bread and the wine. Jesus is equally present in both the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Throughout the Mass we are nourished both by the Word of God and by the Body and Blood of Jesus just as the two disciples realized that their “hearts were burning” as they spoke with Jesus. How can we better support our sisters and brothers in Christ here and around the world?

A very special thank you to all the donors who have helped us try to reach our goal.

We are at 40%!!! We have received 100% of our Diocesan goal and are now on our way to repair our Crespi Parish Hall.

Our plan is to have enough funds to create a private office and upgrade the kitchen

and bathrooms at a cost of $150,000. As most of you know, these areas are in desperate need of repair and upgrade and these improvements would greatly assist our ministries who rely on Crespi Parish Hall for much of their service and work. . Our funds from the prior two years have enabled us to start the project but we need everyone’s help in order to complete the project by the fall.

We ask all of you to participate today, even if in a small way. You can use the

envelopes in the pews or donate online at www.dioceseofmonterey.org/ama. Thank you again for your generosity and support!

One Faith, One Family.

DOCENT CORNER Saint Benedict of Palermo There is a statue high in the nook of the south bell tower of the Mission that you can see from the quadrangle. This is a reproduction of the statue of St. Benedict carved by Mission Curator Harry Downie. The original statue was carved by local Indians because the missions were unable to get proper religious statues from Mexico or Spain (after the Mexican revolution) and is in the Convento Museum. San Benito or Saint Benedict "The Moor" was born in Messina, Sicily around 1526 and was also called Benedict the Black or Benedict the African. The surname "the Moor" is a misnomer originating from the Italian Il Moro (the black). His parents were from Africa and were Christian slaves. They had determined not to have children but when their master promised to liberate their firstborn because of their loyal service, they had Benedict. Freed at age 18, he remained an employee of his former master. Even though he was scorned and mocked by others as poor as himself due to his origin and skin, he retained a natural cheerfulness. He became enamored of a group of religious hermits near Palermo. They were later united to the Franciscans. Still a simple lay Brother, he was named Guardian of his convent in 1578. At the end of his term as superior, he became master of novices and later returned to work in the kitchen where many continued to visit him. He died of natural causes in 1589 and countless miracles occurred at his tomb. King Philip III of Spain paid for a special tomb for the simple friar. He was canonized two centuries later and his feast day is April 4th. There is an interesting story of the statue in local Monterey writings. Sometime in the 1850s, a very irreligious character made targets of the eyes of the statue of St. Benedict taking advantage of the neglected condition of the Mission at the time. A few days later, the man was struck blind. The incident was well attested to by many local residents of Monterey. This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association.

Our Lady of Fatima

The Story The Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, appeared 6 times to 3 shepherd children; Lucia, Francisco, and Jacinta; between May 13 and October 13, 1917. She came to the little village of Fatima which had remained faithful to the Catholic Church during the recent persecutions by the government. Our Lady came with a message from

God to every man, woman, and child of our century. Our Lady promised that the whole world would be in peace, and that many souls would go to Heaven if Her requests were listened to and obeyed.

The Miracle The date was October 13, 1917, in Fatima. On that date, 70,000 people came to see the phenomenon. The miracle occurred with the sun. All could stare perfectly at the sun without blinking, or even hurting their eyes. While all were watching the sun, it rotated, got large and small, got close to the people, and got far away from them. The sun “danced”. Every single person who was there testified to seeing the sun dance, even non-believers who immediately dropped onto their knees and begged forgiveness.

MUSIC INSERT—CLERGY STUDY DAYS 2017

Clergy Study Days 2017

Bishop Garcia will be joining the priests and deacons of our

diocese for our Annual Study Days, which take place from

May 1st - 5th, 2017.

As a result of our priests and deacons being absent during that

time, there will be ONE daily mass

at the Blessed Sacrament Chapel at 7:00 am.

Please remember our priests and deacons in your prayers.
