Mass Schedule/Communion Services

Jesus came into the world as a small, vulnerable infant and yet three kings traveled long distances to show their respect. They prophetically witnessed to Jesus’ kingship, power, and dominion while it remained hidden from the rest of the world. Herod, in his own way, recognizes Jesus’ higher authority to rule, thus out of fear he reacts strongly to Jesus. Unlike human kingship, divine kingship is based on love and justice for all, a flourishing of the human community. Through our baptism, we are welcomed into the kingdom of God and we are missioned to be “priest, prophet, and king.” How are we leading with a sense of fairness and justice for all? The Adoration of the Magi, by Andrea Mantegna, Italian,

about 1431-1506. Distemper (pigments in animal glue) on linen. Painting is from the permanent collection of the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Epiphany. The word “epiphany” comes from the Greek epiphainen, a verb that means “to shine upon,” “to manifest,” or “to make known.” What the Church celebrates today is the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ to the whole world; after being made known to the shepherds of Bethlehem, He is revealed to the Magi who have come from the East to adore Him. The Epiphany should be and is a great Feast for us. The joy we felt at the birth of Christ on Christmas must be renewed today (and every day for that matter). In a sense this is a second Christmas Day as it puts the Lord in a new light. This day manifests the divinity of Jesus. At Christmas it was a few shepherds who were invited by the Angels to go and witness and recognize the Lord. However, today, at the Epiphany, the voice of God calls the whole world, each and every one of us, to adore Jesus, and to hear Him. The Epiphany or the realization of the divinity and saving grace of the Lord should lead us as individuals to a personal epiphany. In a sense an epiphany is representative of conversion, conversion to the truth. If we accept Christ as our Savior and if we truly strive to live our lives as His disciple, we begin to pursue lives of stewardship, lives of love and service. Today of all days should help us in that realization and in that goal.

Docent Corner

Carmel Mission is one of two missions that have been designated by the Pope as a basilica (the other is Mission San Diego). All basilicas have a fixture known as a conopaeum (also called an umbrellina), a tall, umbrella-like canopy made of alternating bands of red and yellow silk, the traditional colors of the papal government, and topped with a copper Cross. It is a historic piece of papal regalia and insignia, once used on a daily basis to provide shade for the Pope. The umbrellina is found in all basilicas throughout the world. The Mission Umbrellina has red and gold panels. Each gold panel is embroidered with iconography that is particular to the Carmel Mission: Two panels have a red Galero (the traditional ecclesiastical hat for a cardinal) with 15 red tassels per side. This indicates St. Charles Borroméo, our patron, who was a Cardinal and the Archbishop of Milan. Two panels have the symbol of the Order of Mt. Carmel (Carmelites) since they were the priests who, on the Vizcaino expedition in 1602, named the area Carmel. The Carmelite symbol is a cross on top of a mountain (Mt. Carmel), a crown and 3 stars (representing the prophet Elijah, Christ and Mary). Two panels have an interlocking saw and a blacksmith’s iron working tool. The saw represents Fr. Serra’s father’s name since the word Serra is the Catalonian form of Sierra which means “saw”. His mother’s name was Ferrer which is the Catalonian form of Herrero which means “iron worker or blacksmith”. One panel has a carpenter’s square and a lily. These icons represent St. Joseph for whom the mission (and every mission) was dedicated. He is the titular patron of the Church and the patron (along with Our Lady of Bethlehem) of the Monterey diocese. This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association.

New Book Club Selection

The next selection for the Carmel Mission Book Club is Bishop Robert Barron’s The Strangest Way: Walking the

Christian Path. In the spirit of C. S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity, this book is a powerful introduction to the way of Jesus Christ. “At its very center,” writes Bishop Barron, “is a God who comes after us with reckless abandon, breaking open His own heart in love ………. to include us in his own life.” This book has been called “luminous, challenging, wondrous, and grace-laden” by Christian theologians and writers, who “could hardly put it down” according to one. The Book Club meets Saturdays at 2pm at MacMahon Center, and begins this selection January 7, 2017. Refreshments are provided. All are welcome. Attendance and the book are free; a goodwill donation to cover the book and shipping is requested but not required.

This service resumed on Wednesday, January 4, 2017.

On behalf of our Parish, we extend our thanks to all those who volunteer to

help with this outreach ministry.

A Special Pilgrimage

Bishop Garcia & Fr. Jhonnatan welcoming the sisters.

Sr. Christopher from Colombia found a 'paisano' at the Carmel Mission.

Docent Maureen Bianchini explains the history of the Carmel Mission to the sisters.

The sisters venerating St. Junipero Serra's tomb.

After having had a "Picnic Day" in Carmel Valley with Bishop Richard J. Garcia, which included a Eucharistic celebration, some forty Missionaries of Charity sisters (founded by Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta) made their way to Carmel Mission. They were welcomed by Father Jhonnatan on behalf of our Pastor and parish community, and given a tour conducted by Maureen Bianchini, one of our wonderful docents. The sisters spent time in prayer at the tomb of Saint Junipero Serra, a patron of missionaries.
