Following on last weekend’s theme of hearing and responding to God’s call, we are called to further our discipleship this weekend. First Jonah shows us that when we follow God, God works through us and we can do things we never dreamed possible. Jonah follows God’s request to preach to and warn the people of Ninevah to repent. God acting through Jonah in a powerful way brings about repentance of the entire large city. Then in the Gospel, Jesus calls four fishermen and asks them to become “fishers of men.” These four see something deeper in Jesus’ offer and choose to follow him. God is inviting each of us to deepen our commitment to follow Jesus. How can you better respond to God’s call in your own life? ” St. Francis of the Redwoods — Big Sur, CA. 24.9 miles from intersection of Rio Rd and Highway-1 Mass Schedule Bilingual (Es/En) Mass: 1st & 3rd Saturday of the month, 5:00 pm. DOCENT CORNER Our Lady of Bethlehem…Lost and Found

This statue, which resides in the side chapel to the left of the nave, is an original artifact of the Carmel Mission and is the oldest shrine of Our Lady on the west coast of America. The title, Our Lady of Bethlehem, honors Our Lady at the birth of Christ.

The statue was originally situated on the front altar of the Mission but when the Mission was abandoned, the statue was cared for by an Indian family, the Cantua’s. It was located in an adobe building in the Mission orchard where devotions were held in her honor for years by local Indians and residents. When the daughter of this family took up residence in Monterey in about 1872, the statue was enshrined in her home.

At her death in 1925, she passed the statue to a neighbor, Tulita Bennett Westfall, a local artist of some note and a descendant of one of the soldiers (Boronda) who had accompanied Fr. Serra. It stayed in her family for many years (including when she lived in Oakland) and was dismantled and stored in her basement when Harry Downie asked to see it. She did not want to show it to him for fear that he would want to take it.

But Harry was a very persistent man. He offered to repair it for her since it was in such bad shape but when he found out that it was the actual long missing La Conquistadora, he said it had to be returned to the Mission. In 1948, Tulita reluctantly gave it to Harry to be returned to the place of honor in the restored Mission church.

The statue was placed on the gospel side of the altar on Christmas Eve 1948. After the Reredos was completed in 1956, she was moved to the side altar and from there to the Bethlehem Chapel which was re-dedicated to her honor. Harry later found documentation that indicated the statue should have been placed back on the main altar according to the original plan. Since the Reredos was already completed, he left her in the chapel.

This insight into the Mission history was provided by the Carmel Mission Docent Association.

ANNOUNCEMENTS — DOCENT CORNER

Theology on Tap Wednesday, January 31st,

7:00 PM London Bridge Pub, 256 Figueroa Street

(at the foot of Wharf 2), Monterey.

Our speaker this month will be Rev. Peter Crivello, Moderator of the Curia of the Diocese and former

pastor at San Carlos Cathedral. Fr. Peter will lead a discussion on “Lent, a Matter of the Heart.” Many of us approach Lent as a season of self-denial, but it’s

really a time of opening our hearts to Christ and making room for him in our lives. Let’s look at that

as we prepare for Ash Wednesday. Join us for interesting and enlightening conversation as we

delve deeper into our faith, and enjoy dinner with friends. London Bridge Pub was voted “Best Fish and

Chips on the Central Coast” for the 5th year in a row! All are welcome!

Join Monterey Theology on Tap on Facebook! You can also send questions to Deacon Warren Hoy

at [email protected]. We hope to see you there!

Next Selection, Carmel Mission Book Club The next selection for the Carmel Mission Book Club is Strangers in a Strange Land by Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M.

Chaput offers a compelling reflection on the person of Jesus Christ, the nature of the Church, the urgency of radical faith, and the redemptive power of beauty – all in the spirit of Psalm 8 and the enduring words of Irenaeus: “The glory of God is man fully alive.”

The Book Club meets Saturdays at 2pm at MacMahon Center, and begins this selection January 13th. Refreshments are provided. All are welcome. Attendance and the book are free; a goodwill donation to cover the book and shipping is requested but not required.

The Carmel Mission Basilica Museum Docent Volunteers - “Dust Brigade” The Carmel Mission Basilica Museum is grateful for our many docent volunteers who provide important services for our parish and our many visitors. Stewardship has many forms from art research to sharing publicly the importance of our Mission in California History.

One important volunteer ministry is the Docent Exhibits Dusting Team also known lovingly as the “Dust Brigade”. This team provides an important service in the conservation and maintenance of our exhibits and the art of artifacts of the Mission. On a regular basis this docent team comes together with the Mission Museum Manager to maintain the many exhibit environments. These enjoyable working sessions often include insightful dialogue and about the exhibits and Mission history.

Carmel Mission’s Junípero Serra School

Dear Alumna, Parents, Benefactors and Sponsors of Junipero Serra School,

JSS would like to include you on the progress of our Murphy Gym project. As many of you may remember, Monsignor Murphy, Pastor of the Carmel Mission Basilica Parish envisioned an athletic area for JSS students. In 2002, under the guidance of Monsignor Murphy, and in partnership with the Carmel Mission Parish community, the Murphy center was

completed. The uses of Murphy Gym have evolved, and a number of community and Parish events are now held in this welcoming facility. With the support of Father Paul, our Pastor, and Principal Stewart, the JSS Parents

Association and school community have been

raising funds to recoat the gym floor and purchase a floor cover to be used during events.

Over the Christmas break we completed

phase one! Through several generous parish donations and school fundraisers we have raised $9241.00. JSS students, faculty, staff,

and families, celebrated our new floor with a

morning prayer service, ribbon cutting, and donuts this past Friday, January 12th.

The gym floors have not been recoated since construction and a long-term goal is to create a fund for continued maintenance of this important part of our school. A gift at any level is an

investment in the future and truly makes a difference. Donations can be accepted by calling the school office and 83-624-8322. In the very near future, JSS will be accepting donations via the school website (www.stjuniperoserraschool.org).

Our phase two goal of the purchase of a floor cover and area rugs is $15,000. Should we exceed

that goal, funds will be earmarked for continued scheduled maintenance of Murphy Gym. Thank you to the several parishioners who have already come forward with generous donations. Your contribution is critical to our success in this endeavor. Thank you for your consideration. GO MUSTANGS!!! Sincerely, Bruce Stewart
