JOINING THE COMPANY OF BELIEVERS What will help you to believe? Today’s scripture readings tell of faith and doubt. They offer stories “recorded to help you believe,” as the passage from John’s Gospel (20:31) remarks today. There is an urgency about this. On this Second Sunday of Easter we are challenged to join the company of believers—countless men and women who witnessed the power of the apostles’ faith. There is no doubt that this power comes from Jesus Christ. The second reading, from the book of Revelation, reports John’s mystical vision of the Son of Man, who proclaims, “Once I was dead, but now I live” (Revelation 1:18). The Gospel gathers everyone but Thomas to see the Risen Jesus and receive the Holy Spirit from him. Like Thomas, we who have come along later must have faith so that we can have life. Copyright © J. HELPING YOUR NEIGHBOR If you truly want to help the soul of your neighbor, you should approach God first with all your heart. Ask God simply to fill you with charity... with it you can accomplish what you desire. —St. Vincent Ferrer

CARMEL MISSION BASILICA 2016 ANNUAL MINISTRIES APPEAL

Thank You for your Stewardship!

Due to early bulletin transmission deadlines,

collection amounts for Palm Sunday and Easter were not previously reported and are

included here:

Dear Friends in Christ, We would like to thank all of you who have supported our 2016 Annual Ministry Appeal. Your response is a wonderful example of stewardship in action as your generosity has helped us reach 94% of our Diocesan goal of $54,000! Your continued support and generosity to our parish has been uplifting to us and to me personally as your pastor. We are asking those of you who have yet to support the 2016 Ministry Appeal to consider doing so now. We cannot stress how important the ministries supported by this appeal are to our parish and our community. These ministries include, among others, support of Catechetical Ministries, Catholic Schools, the Permanent Deacon Formation Program, the Young Adult Ministry and the Vocations Ministry for Seminarians. All funds from this appeal go directly to assist these ministries of the diocese and our parish. Last year 141 of our families joined in our appeal and raised the funds needed to meet our goal. This year we are hoping to increase the number of participating families to 200 or more. By participating, we are assisting those in need and helping meet the desire of our Lord to bring new members into our flock. We become truly Easter people, reflecting God’s love for us through our love for one another as His equally beloved children. We are all members of God's family and each of us has a role to perform to support our brothers and sisters. We invite you to share your gifts and join your fellow parishioners in support of the common goals of our parish community. For those who can assist us to meet our goal, we ask that you pray for guidance, and support our appeal as you feel directed. In the envelope provided in the pews, please enclose your donation or fill out your 2016 pledge information and place it in the collection basket. You can also donate online at www.dioceseofmonterey.org/ama We are humbled by your generosity and willingness to serve others and make a difference with your gift! Thank you on behalf of your own parish community members. May God continue to guide, bless and protect you,

Carmel Mission Book Club News

The Book Club is now reading Church Fathers from Clement of Rome to Augustine. The club meets at 2 p.m. Saturdays in MacMahon Center. All are welcome, and refreshments are served. There is no charge, but a goodwill donation is welcome to cover the cost of the book and shipping. Written by Pope Emeritus Benedict VI, this selection is a rich and engrossing survey of the early Church, focusing on the followers of Christ immediately succeeding the Apostles, the “Apostolic Fathers.” This book is a wonderful way to get to know many of the prominent early Christians and the tremendous spiritually-rich leg-acy they have bequeathed to us. Interested? Want to know more? Call Deacon Bill at 646-0358.

Wheelchairs Available: Wheelchairs are available in the Museum Gift Store for anyone needing mobility assistance while visiting. The irregular surfaces around the Mission can make it difficult for parishioners to get from their cars to the Basilica. Please let the staff know and they will be happy to assist you.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION We return to our reflections on the rites of mar-riage with a brief consideration of reforms from the Council of Trent. When the Protestant Reformation took hold, the fairly recent achievements of the Church in regard to the sacrament of marriage were reviewed with a critical, reforming eye. In general, Protestants returned to an earlier view that marriage was a civil matter, although some said that the civil society had to be in harmony with Christian teaching. In the Catholic Church, the Council of Trent took the question up in 1563, and decided to shore up its teaching on the sacramentality of marriage. They identified many threats to this, including secret marriages and easy divorce. So they enacted laws that still govern our practice today: to be valid, marriage consent must be exchanged in the presence of a priest and two witnesses. Ever since Trent, marriages must also be announced three weeks in advance to the com-munity, and recorded in a register. Anyone who has ever watched a soap opera has seen the standard scene of a minister announcing gravely, “If there is anyone here present who sees any reason why these two should not be married...” This an-nouncement has no place in the Catholic liturgy, but survives among some other denominations. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SEARCHING TO MEET JESUS: MERCY REVEALED

. In the redeeming contact with the wounds of the Risen Christ, Thomas showed his own wounds, his own injuries, his own lacerations, his own humiliation; in the print of the nails he found the decisive proof that he was loved, that he was expected, that he was understood. He found himself before the Messiah filled with kindness, mercy, tenderness. This was the Lord he was searching for, he, in the hidden depths of his being, for he had always known He was like this. And how many of us are searching deep in our heart to meet Jesus, just as He is: kind, merciful, tender! For we know, deep down, that He is like this.

The Murphy Center was transformed into a beautiful Winter Wonderland. The evening included both Live and Silent auction, a Jewelry Raffle, music by the Mike Moratta Band and a fabulous dinner by Aqua Terra Catering. We raised $29,691.30 and all proceeds from the 2015 event are earmarked for a Science Lab at the School.

Our Gala’s Have Made A difference! Chrome Books, Wireless and Awards! Our first Gala was held in the Mac Mahon Center also following a daytime Christmas Market & Open House in 2014. All proceeds from the 2014 event went to update Junípero Serra School's Tech Lab and pro-gram. As a result of this new and innovative Tech Lab, Junípero Serra School was named “Best in State” for California middle schools in the Verizon Innovative App Challenge for 2016. This competition required teams of students to identify a problem at their school or broader community and then create a concept for an app that would help solve the problem. All 7th and 8th graders at JSS worked very hard in teams of six stu-dents for the first two months of the school year under the leadership of their teacher Mrs. Sunny Cordoba who submitted the ideas to Verizon. Junípero Serra School was one of 95 middle and high schools nationwide to be selected from over 1200 submissions to go on to regional competition for the western states. The initial prize to the group of six 8th graders included android tablets for each student and their teacher as well as a $5,000 grant for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education at the school. We are actively planning the 2016 Gala theme and identifying where the gala proceeds will be directed. Our Gala’s would not have been possible without a committee of dedicated and talented women who worked tirelessly to insure that both events were successful. It also would not have been possible without the kind-ness and generosity of our Sponsors and Gala Attendees. We would like to thank Deborah Crouch, Karen Cumings, Wendy Eales, Nikki Greco, Karen Miller, Myrna Mink, Pam Noto, Karen Sebok, Liz Tana, Mary Kay Teresa, Emma Vetter and Nicki Pasculli. These efforts have been matched by the support and generosity of our parishioners and we look forward to celebrating another Gala with you!

THANK YOU EVERYONE!
