1. INTRODUCTION
HIV free society seems like a just another dream, although it is not possible to achieve that
even we are moving in slow pace. Advancement in technology makes it easier to channel the
information about HIV to everyone. Besides technology, art also plays an important role in
delivering information, and through theatre, channeling information seems a lot more fun.
Like it or not, in our society, there exists a segment of the population which is essentially
left out. These marginalized people are excluded from mainstream social, economy, cultural, or
political life. With this realization, we would like to educate the public through a theatre
performance entitled ‘I’m P+’ with the aim of reducing discrimination and prejudice of society
to this group.
As stated, it has been known that theatre is a powerful weapon in raising awareness. When
a play is perform by a local theatre group, for a local audience in its own language, it has the
ability to reach an audience member with a particular message that can have a lasting impact.
Moreover, the actors are from the community itself, who has experienced the hardship and
difficulties. This will make it easier to educate the society about the focused marginalized group.
Voice of Hope: I’m P+ the Theatre has been successfully conducted on 24th – 26th
September 2014, featuring five affected and infected actors to share their own experiences.
Generally, the objectives of this program are to:
To raise public awareness of the targeted marginalize community
To dispel common myths and misconceptions as well as fighting the discrimination about
marginalized group
To acknowledge the existence of infected and affected people in our society that has been
neglected
To involve more and more people from marginalized community in educational activities
Attracting the attention of the general public to make them accept the reality of
marginalized people in our communities and recognize their rights

4. GETTING STARTED
Since flash mob has always succeed in grabbing attention, most of the committees agreed
to join flash mob in order to promote I’m P+ the Theatre. The flash mob was held on 18th
September and 23rd September, with the all-black committees stood at the centre of IIUM, holding
plank cards.
Preparation for the night of event started on 24th September. All of the committees
gathered at Main Audi IIUM since the morning to prepare for the big nights. We get started with
the technical team preparing the stage with suitable props, adjusting lights and audio. Program
coordinator was busy with seating arrangement for students, guests, and special guests. They also
prepared the holding room for special guests as well as the main entrance into the hall. General
task team was busy with registration table, signage, photo booth, and door gift for the early birds.
Catering team succeed in preparing tasty meal for the committees while logistic team has done a
good job in reserving parking for outsiders as well as for security purpose. Publication and
promotion team succeed in promoting this charity theatre to the targeted audience. Tickets were
sold out within a week.
The next day, on 25th September, all of the committees gathered early to settle their task.
The actors rehearsed to make sure their performance run smoothly. By 5.00pm, the actors were
getting ready for the night.
Registration for the event started at 7.30pm. By 8.00pm, the audiences were allowed to
enter the hall. To ensure the event run smoothly without any disturbance that might bug the actors,
the entrance was covered with dark cloth to prevent any outside light. Audiences are not
encouraged to move a lot, and they were advised to turn off their phone.
The event started by 8.45pm with national anthem. It ended by 10.00pm. After that, the
committees gathered for short briefing. First day’s briefing focused on any improvements we can
make for the events. By 11.00pm, all the committees left the hall, eager for the next day.
Second day of event started with the technical team checked on the stage, props and
lighting. Few improvements has been made to improve the quality of the performance on the
second day. For example, the opening of performance was more coordinated compared to the
first day of event. The committees, learned from the yesterday, dealt their task smoothly.
The night started with the presentation of donation from the sale of tickets to PAFI by the
Program Manager, Nor Hidayah bt Mat Zain, along with the representative of SOCASA, Siti
Azura bt Mohd Rafi. It then continued with presentation of tokens of appreciation to PAFI from
KHIND Starfish Foundation. KHIND Starfish Foundation’s (KSF) chairman Mr Cheng Ping
Keat was very delighted to deliver 15 tokens to the Director, Hamli Hamdan on behalf of Hiv
Infected committees. After that, the Head of Department, Dr Nur Azura Md Diah presented token
of appreciation to the KSF’s chairman.
Second day’s performance went smoothly and ended by 10.30pm. After the event, once again the
committees were gathered for post-mortem session.
5. OBSERVATION AND ACHIEVEMENT
Performing arts have been traditionally used to convey essential messages, knowledge and skills
from one generation to the next. For example, interactive theatre, if used correctly, can be a very
powerful tool for behavioral change and transmitting information on HIV & AIDS. Thus, after
some pondering and discussions, I’m P+ the Theatre became reality in order to channel information
about HIV.
I’m P+ the Theatre has become one of the major events this semester. This theatre acts as
a measurement for another upcoming theatre performances in IIUM. Not only that, it also acts as
a motivation for another clubs and societies to organize more successful events that will help boost
the university’s name.
It is not an easy job to organize a theatre with HIV as its main concern. This theatre is a
result of hardship and difficulties faced by the Project Manager as well as the committees.
Problems by problems appeared as the date of performance approaching. But, these difficulties
actually motivated us and contributed the success of this major event.
Alhamdulillah. Our program get quite a coverage by Malay Mail, BERNAMA News, IIUM
Press and IIUM FM. We succeed to collect RM6000. It can be considered as a huge
accomplishment as we only promote this event in a short period of time, a week. We also received
positive feedbacks from the audiences.
“I’m P+ will be one of my best and important memory in my life … thanks
(T_T) (T_T) (T_T) (T_T) (Mr. Wong Gar Shen PIC’s Project for Happiness 2014)
“An eye-opening theatre! Many audiences were crying their eyes out. Let’s collaborate
next time. We’ll look for another issue. This theatre is an outstanding opening for this semester.
Everyone is expecting for more excellent theatre after this!” (ELITS’ President)
“All this while, I heard that HIV is an easily-infected virus. After watching them, listening
to their stories, I learn to appreciate their feeling and I learn to understand that society’s perceptions
about HIV are incorrect. I suggest that this theatre continues to educate public about HIV. I give 5
out of 5.” (Siti Nur Syuhada, IIUM)
“Congratulations! It was a great performance! I’m touched. You guys should promote it to
outsiders to create awareness.” (Mrs Farah Hamizah, CONSIST College)
Pusat Kesihatan Daerah Hulu Langat gave us huge support for this charity event. Our
program also has been personally advised by Datin Marina, former president of Malaysian Aid
Council and The Founder of PT Foundation. Pusat Kesihatan Daerah, UITM’s theatre club and
UNISEL’s Youth club were very interested to collaborate with us for the next project. Besides
that, another great achievement is I’m P+ the Theatre has been nominated for Anugerah Tokoh
Mahasiswa.
This effort will not stop here. Educating public and creating awareness is a non-stop job.
As long as the infected and affected HIV are discriminated, we will try our best to reduce it.
6. FROM BITTER TO BETTER
Several shortcomings we encountered during the event:
There were some technical problems that later on has been handled professionally
Due to the technical problems and state of hall, we have to cancel our meeting with
BERNAMA TV
Initially, the event was supposed to be held at CAC, but later on we have to change the
venue to Main Audi IIUM
Theatre club refused to collaborate for this charity theatre and we lastly collaborate with
SOCASA IIUM
It was quite difficult to train the actors as they are not professional actor. They also have
their own commitment, plus there were some transportation problems.
7. SUGGESTION
Since we get many positive feedbacks, this event should be continuously held as it is very
effective to educate public about HIV. It can be presented in another university, and open it to
the public. Besides that, instead of theatrical performance, we can film it to make it easier for
audiences who cannot spare time to come and watch a theatre performance.
Further study can be conducted based on HIV focusing on social acceptance, and the research
can be published for academic purpose.
