Rev. Fr. Nicholas Marcus
My beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, It is with great joy that I greet all of you as your newly assigned Parish
Priest. It has been over 10 years that my family and I have called the Nativity of the Virgin Mary our home parish and we look forward once again, to be in this beautiful church on 5 Mile Rd. Our Community has gone through much in these past years, both good and bad, and through the grace of God, His presence has always shined
in the hearts and faces of the people here. My memories at Nativity are that of a dynamic presence, well known throughout the Holy Metropolis of Detroit for its spirituality as well as for its chanting. I remember when Archbishop Demetrios on a visit to our humble parish in the 90’s said: “There are only a few parishes throughout the Archdiocese that I can experience a byzan-tine choir this well accomplished.” This reputation was due, in no small measure, to the dedicated ministry of Dr. Panayiotis Mitsias, the Protospalti of our Detroit Me-tropolis, and especially through its long time and beloved pastor Fr. Michael Varla-mos. Fr. Michael’s vibrant and inspiring leadership guided Nativity to become a model parish. I am sure Fr. Michael, and the priests who followed, would give credit to the faithful parishioners of our Holy Nativity of the Virgin Mary as being the instru-ment from which the Community’s success was realized. This dynamic presences is nothing less than the activity of the Holy Spirit —an activity that sustains both Clergy
and laity as they work together to bring the truth of Christ’s Gospel to the world. It is with great humility and the deepest sense of love and admiration that I answered the call of our Father and Shepherd, Metropolitan Nicholas, to serve the Community of The Nativity of the Virgin Mary. I look forward to catching up and reestablishing long time relationships, as well as making new ones. It is my hope, that working to-gether we may continue building upon the strong foundation established and con-tinue to grow this Vineyard of the Lord in the tradition of Christian love and philan-
thropy. With paternal blessings in Christ, Rev. Fr. Nicholas Marcus
On behalf of His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas;
Your church family calls upon you to help rebuild the only church
destroyed on “9/11”, and help launch the Saint Nicholas National Shrine at Ground Zero.
Each of our Archdioceses is asked to Support this Important
Effort.

Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ, Summer is upon us and with that comes graduations and celebrations including our own Sunday school and Greek school. Congratulations to all the students, teachers and parents in both programs for successfully completing another year. Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2nd annual Nativity Talent Show and the Greek Independ-ence Day Parade last month. Both events were well attended and fun. The talent show featured a host of singing, dancing, drumming, guitar and bass playing, hula hooping and a spectacular rendition of “Sisters” by Michelle and Charlene! Thank you Peggy Collias for her fantastic emceeing and Michael Szlinis for helping to organize the event, we look forward to next year's show! Our spring general assembly was held last month, thank you to all who attended. All ministries gave re-ports and many topics were discussed including fall parish council elections, saving funds and improving the church phone system, new ministries, recent repairs and discussions of items the council would like to move forward with in the future. Furthermore, summer brings the hustle and bustle of weekday traffic through the church as baking prepara-tions begin for Our 11th Taste of Greece Festival held on August 28th-30th. Please watch for the baking schedule and get involved as much as possible. Finally, it is with great joy and excitement that we welcome our new priest Fr. Nicholas Marcus, Presvytera Liza and their children Jonathan, Irini and Anna to our Nativity family. Once again, through the blessings of our Lord, the intercessions of the Panagia and the Saints, the love of Metropolitan Nicholas and the prayers of the faithful, we have survived another transitionary period and look forward to a new beginning. Special thank you’s to many priests who celebrated liturgy and ministered over the last 8 months including Fr. Dean Hountalas, Fr. Charles Sarelis, Fr. James Stathakios, Fr. Peter Bistolarides, Fr. Teodor Petrutiu, Fr. Michael Varlamos, Fr. Nicholas Kotsis, Fr. John Moutafis, Deacon Alex Radulescu and of course our beloved Fr. Philemon Karamanos who went above and beyond these last months as our surrogate pastor. We will miss him immensely! Have a wonderful summer and God Bless! Yours In Christ, Louis Poulos Parish Council President

Orthodox Christian Stewardship is a way of life,
which acknowledges account-
ability, reverence, and responsibility before God. A primary goal of
Stewardship is to promote spiritual growth and strengthen faith. Be-
coming a Steward begins when we believe in God, to whom we give
our love, loyalty and trust and act on those beliefs. As Stewards, we af-
firm that every aspect of our lives comes as a gift from Him. Steward-
ship calls on the faithful to cheerfully offer back to God a portion of
the gifts with which they have been blessed.
An Orthodox Christian Steward is an active participant in the life of
the Church. The parish encourages all who accept the Orthodox Faith
to become practicing Stewards. Each year the Steward is expected to
carefully review his or her personal circumstances and make a commit-
ment of time, talent, and treasure to support the Parish and her Minis-
tries, which in turn support the National Ministries of our Archdio-
cese, Metropolises, and institutions.

Dear Nativity Family,
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all the beautiful women of the
Philoptochos Society who worked selflessly these last 2 years. They worked
many hours baking hundreds of tsourekia, koulourakia and other baked
goods, dyed hundreds of red eggs, decorated icons for numerous services and
spent hours of their time decorating the epitaphio. They held fundraisers to
help meet our Metropolis and National obligations and as well as serve our
local community, helping with numerous needs. I’m so proud to be part of
such an amazing group of women. The energy they have and work ethic they
exuberate is contagious.
Although it has been a challenging 2 years for this executive board, we en-
joyed starting new trends while following and respecting the organizations’
continuous schedule. I thank you for the honor to serve as Philoptochos
president. It was truly a humbling experience.
I wish the new board all the best. I pray that God continue to grace them all
with good health and happiness and hope we all continue to support them in
all their endeavors.
In His service,
Betsy Basoukeas

A new committee has been created to connect with and support our col-lege students, as well as those young adults aged 18-22 who have de-cided to enter the military, job training or the world of work. The Commit-tee is called "Nativity Kiss". We will be providing intermittent care packages and words of encouragement to our young people. Please assist us by providing the names, addresses, date of birth and a brief note about what your young adult is doing (for example: a junior at Eastern University, first year vocational training at Schoolcraft college, entered U.S. Air Force, started new job at Macy's in 2014). We would like to connect with all of our young adults, even if they are still living at home. Please send contact information to [email protected]. The Metropolis of Detroit Summer Camp (MDSC), located near Rose City, MI since 1951, is now accepting camper registration and staff applications for the upcoming 2015 summer camp season! Every year, approximately 400 youth from the parishes in Michigan, Ohio and northern Indiana attend MDSC. The camp has one week for older campers who are entering senior year or who have just graduated, and five other weeks for campers going into the 3rd through 11th grades. Campers are split into groups by grade (Juniors – grades 3-5, Intermediates – grades 6-8 and Seniors – grades 9-11) and they are supervised by our camp staff at all times. During the week, campers experience daily activities that include Arts & Crafts, swimming lessons, Orthodox Life sessions, as well as open swimming/boating on Echo Lake, outdoor activities on the camp’s playing field or basketball court and all-camp events like skits, dances and many other fun events. The camp’s cooks are outstanding and the campers and staff eat very well! Beyond the activities, MDSC is a unique and special place where everyone feels accepted, where great friendships form and where young people have experiences they will never have anywhere else. MDSC would like to encourage you to register your child(ren) today for a week at camp! Weeks fill quickly! Camper tuition is $360 per week, and online registration can be completed through a link on the camp’s website: www.gomdsc.org. The camp also hires young adults as Counselors-in-Training (age 17), Lifeguards (age 17 & over) and Cabin Counselors (ages 18 & over). Staff can work one or several weeks at camp and gain valuable work experience and service hours. A link to the online Staff applications can also be found on the camp’s website. Please visit the camp website (www.gomdsc.org) to find more information about the camp dates, camp programs, daily schedule, history and even view pictures from past summers on the website. Should you have any questions, please call (248) 909-MDSC (6372) or email us at [email protected].

Nothing so arouses the soul, gives it wing, sets it free from the
earth, releases it from the prison of the body, teaches it to love
wisdom and to despise all the things of this life, as concordant
melody and sacred song composed in rhythm.
- St. John Chrysostom, On Psalm 41
Pray gently and calmly, sing with understanding and rhythm;
then you will soar like a young eagle high in the heavens.
Psalmody calms the passions and curbs the uncontrolled impulses
in the body.

EARTH, AND OF ALL THINGS VISIBLE AND INVISIBLE.
AND IN ONE LORD JESUS CHRIST, THE ONLY-BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD, BEGOTTEN OF THE FATHER BEFORE ALL AGES; LIGHT OF LIGHT, TRUE GOD
OF TRUE GOD, BEGOTTEN, NOT CREATED, OF ONE ESSENCE WITH THE FATHER, THROUGH WHOM ALL THINGS WERE MADE.
WHO FOR US MEN AND FOR OUR SALVATION CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN
AND WAS INCARNATE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE VIRGIN MARY AND BECAME MAN.
HE WHO WAS CRUCIFIED FOR US UNDER PONTIUS PILATE, AND SUFFERED
AND WAS BURIED.
AND HER ROSE ON THE THIRD DAY, ACCORING TO THE SCRIPTURES. HE ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN AND IS SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE
FATHER;
HE ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN AND IS SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND OF THE FATHER;
HE WILL COME AGAIN WITH THE GLORY TO JUDGE THE LIVING AND THE
DEAD; HIS KINGDOM SHALL HAVE NO END.
AND IN THE HOLY SPIRIT, THE LORD, THE CREATOR OF LIFE, WHO PROCEEDS FROM THE FATHER, WHO TOGETHER WITH THE FATHER AND THE SON IS WORSHIPPED AND GLORIFIED, WHO SPOKE THROUGH THE
PROPHETS.
IN ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC, AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH, I CONFESS ONE BAPTISM FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.
I LOOK FOR THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD, AND THE LIFE OF THE AGE
TO COME. AMEN
