-Started around the 1860’s to the 1890’s-Defined as the representation of reality-Thought to have no differences between the 19th century movement naturalism -Mainly focused on the writing of middle class life or a particular topic-Things were changing rapidly in the US people interested in the different cultures.

Paulo Coelho features Realism in most of his literary works, such as “The Alchemist”, “The witch of Portobello”, and “The Valkyries”.

Henry Adams was one of the first authors to use Realism. You can see his use in his works such as “Democracy” and “Esther, 1918”.

Mark Twain was one of the first authors to use Realism. He used realism in many of his works. His most famous are “The Innocents Abroad” and “Roughing it”.

Realism is a literary term which is so widely used as to be more or less meaningless except when used in contradistinction to some other movement, such as Naturalism, Expressionism, Surrealism.
