    Configuring, connecting, andtroubleshooting a computers network

    settings is a key skill set for administrators.

    Administrators must be able to understandhow Windows 8:

    o Functions in wired and wireless networks.

    o Selects a wireless network to connect to.

    o Can be configured to locate default printerswhen users work across multiple networks.

    Service SetIdentifier (SSID)

    The SSID is the name for the wireless network.

    Any wireless network that is broadcasting itsname appears in the list of available

    networks in Windows 8. If you hold your mouse over the network

    name without clicking, you can see thesecurity type (e.g., WEP, WPA2) used andthe wireless protocol required (e.g., 802.11g,802.11n).

    The Network andSharing Center

    If you need to connect to a wireless networkthat is not broadcasting its SSID, the processis a little more involved.

    Because the network is not broadcastingyou have to enter information such as thenetworks SSID (network name), security

    type, encryption type, and security key to

    connect to it.

    The Network andSharing Center

    Because the network does not appear onyour network list, you must connect to it byusing the Network and Sharing Center.

    The Network and Sharing Center provides acentral location for network configurationcontrols (changing settings, managingwireless networks, network sharing settings).

    Prioritizing Networks inWindows 8

    Windows 8 determines the connectionpriority automatically based on the type ofnetwork you are connected to.

    The highest priority network is always anEthernet (wired) connection with Wi-Fi andthen mobile broadband networks preferredwhen Ethernet is not available.

    Removing WirelessNetworks/Profiles

    A wireless profile is a file in Windows 8 thatstores information about a wireless networkthat you use on a repeated basis.

    To view all wireless profiles currently storedon your computer, from a commandprompt, type the following and then pressEnter:netsh wlan show profiles

    Network Adapters A network adapter (network interface card

    [NIC], ethernet adapter, wireless adapter,Wi-Fi card) is the hardware component usedto connect your Windows 8 computer to awired or wireless network.

    The easiest way to access the configurationsettings for a network adapter is to use theNetwork and Sharing Center.

    To configure the network adapter click theChange adapter settings link.

    Location-Aware Printing Windows 8 has a featured called location-

    aware printing that can make the process ofmoving between networks and connecting toprinters much simpler.

    Location-aware printing, works by tellingWindows 8 Professional to update and selectthe default printer based on the currentlyconnected network.

    Location-aware printing depends upon the

    Network Location Awareness service and theNetwork List Service to determine networkinformation.
