Introducing Windows

Preinstallation Environment (PE)• Windows PE 4.0:

o Is a striped-down operating system

o Is based on the Windows 8 kernel

o Enables system administrators to boot acomputer with no operating system installed andinitiate the operating system setup process

Windows PE• Advantages of Windows PE compared to

MS-DOS:

o Native 32-bit or 64-bit support

o Native 32-bit or 64-bit driver supporto Internal networking support

o Internal NTFS support

o Scripting language support

o Flexible boot options

What’s New inWindows PE?

• Anyone can obtain latest versions ofWindows PE (3.0 and 4.0)

• Available for free in a standalone version as

part of the Windows 8 Assessment andDeployment Kit (ADK)

Understanding WindowsPE Limitations

• Windows PE was never intended to function asa full-time operating system

• Experienced rapid deployment and execution

Limitations include:o Does not support the entire collection of Win32 APIs

o Automatically stops and reboots the computer after72 hours of continuous operation

o Drive letter assignments you create in a Windows PE

session are not persistent between sessionso You must use 32-bit version of Windows PE to install 32-

bit version of Windows 8; 64-bit version of Windows PEto install 64-bit version Windows 8

Understanding WindowsPE Limitations

o Registry keys are reset to default values eachtime the operating system restarts

o Will not fit on a floppy disk

• Is possible to create bootable Windows PE CD-

ROM, DVD-ROM, and USB flash driveo Does not have file server or Remote Desktop

capabilities

o Does not support Microsoft .NET Framework or the

Common Language Runtime (CLR), Windows onWindows 32 (WOW32), Windows on Windows 64(WOW64), Virtual DOS Machine (VDM), OS/2, orPOSIX subsystems

Using Windows PE• Windows PE is useful for scenarios that

require a basic operating system withminimal resource usage.

• Can be used for:o Custom deployments

o System troubleshooting

o System recovery

Installing Third-PartyDevice Drivers

• The Where do you want to install Windows? pagelists the partitions on all the hard disks that the Setupprogram can detect with its default drivers.

• If the hard disk drives in the computer are

connected to a third-party controller, rather thanthe one integrated into the motherboard, the list ofpartitions might appear empty, and you will have tosupply a driver before the Setup program can seethe disks.

• Check the controller manufacturer’s website for adriver supporting Windows 8. If none is available, use the most recent Windows 7 driver.

Installing to a VHD• It is possible to install Windows 8 on a virtual

hard disk (VHD) file stored on any one of thecomputer’s physical disks.

• When you install Windows 8 on a VHD, itbecomes an alternative boot device to thestandard disk partition installation.

• This ability makes it possible to maintain any

number of independent Windows 8installations on a single computer and bootinto any one as needed.

Migrating from WindowsXP or Windows Vista

• There is no direct upgrade path from WindowsVista or Windows XP to Windows 8.

• The only way to retain any of your systeminformation from these earlier operating systems

while installing Windows 8 is to perform amigration, either side-by-side or wipe-and-load.

• If your existing computer is running WindowsVista or Windows XP, you must install the correct

version of Windows Easy Transfer on the sourcecomputer before you can perform themigration.

Windows To Go• Windows To Go is a new feature in Windows 8

that enables administrators to deploy systemimages on removable USB drives.

• When a user plugs a Windows To Go drive into a

remote computer, the system loads thecomplete Windows 8 environment from theremovable medium, including applications andany other data incorporated into the image file.

• Once Windows 8 is loaded from the Windows To

Go drive, the storage subsystem on the hostcomputer is disabled, so that no remnants ofthe Windows To Go environment are left on thatcomputer.
