Securing Internet Explorer The web browser is the primary application

that most people use to access the Internet, and as a result it is also a major point of

weakness from a security perspective. The security improvements included in the

Windows 8 release of Internet Explorerprovide users with the highest degree of

protection possible without compromisingtheir Internet experiences.

    UnderstandingProtected Mode

Protected mode is an operational statedesigned to prevent attackers that dopenetrate the computers defenses fromaccessing vital system components.

Protected mode is a way to run InternetExplorer with highly reduced privileges.

Windows 8 includes a security feature calledMandatory Integrity Control (MIC), whichassigns various integrity access levels toprocesses running on the computer.

    39/58

    Detecting Protected ModeIncompatibilities

Because IE on Windows 8 runs in protectedmode by default, it is possible that web-basedapplications designed to run on earlier versionsmight not run properly.

Applications that did not run under IE version 7may run in IE 10 using the default settings.

Once you have determined the exact sourceof your applications incompatibility, you cantry to resolve the problem by

o Moving the site to the Trusted Sites zoneo Disabling protected mode in IEo Modifying the application

To provide different levels of access tospecific applications, Internet Explorer usessecurity zones, each of which has a different

set of privileges. The four zones are:

Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is the protocol that mostwebsites use when establishing secure connectionswith clients over the Internet.

SSL communications are based on a public keyinfrastructure (PKI), which requires two encryption

keys, a public one and a private one. A web server participating in a PKI receives a digital

certificate from a certification authority (CA), whichcontains its public key. The server also generates aprivate key, which it stores locally.

When a Windows 8 IE user connects to a site that issecured using SSL, a lock appears in the addressbar, along with the name of the organization towhich the CA issued the certificate.
