User Profiles A user profile is a series of folders, associated

with a specific user account, that containpersonal documents, user-specific registry

settings, Internet favorites, and otherpersonalized informationeverything thatprovides a users familiar working

    environment.

On a Windows 8 computer, user profiles arestored in the Users folder, in subfoldersnamed for the user accounts.

Using Roaming Profiles It is a copy of a local

user profile stored ona network share sothat the user can

access it from anycomputer on thenetwork.

To enable a user toaccess a roaming

    Using MandatoryUser Profiles

A mandatory user profileis a read-only roaminguser profile.

To create a mandatoryuser profile, rename theNtuser.dat file in thefolder containing theroaming profile toNtuser.man.

Renaming this file with a.man extension makes itread-only, preventing

the client computersfrom saving changes tothe profile when a userlogs off.

    Managing ProfileCompatibility

User profiles created with Windows 8 are notcompatible with Windows 7 or earlier versions.

If you use a computer running Windows 8 toaccess a roaming profile created with Windows7, Windows 8 automatically upgrades theprofile to its new format, rendering it unusablewith Windows 7.

To control which profile a workstation uses

based on the operating system version, use aGroup Policy setting called Set roaming profilepath for all users logging onto this computer.

Migrating User Profiles There are two basic methods to a client

while retaining the user profile settings:

    o Upgrade

    o Migration two different tools:

    o Windows Easy Transfer

    o User State Migration Tool

Alice has a Windows 7 computer that she has beensharing with her roommates for several years.

She recently purchased the retail version ofWindows 8, which came bundled with a freeexternal hard drive.

Alice wants to install Windows 8, retaining the filesand settings she has accrued and omitting the filesand settings created by her roommates.

However, she does not want to perform anupgrade, because she has recently noticed thatthe computers performance has degraded, possibly due to file fragmentation and registryclutter.

    Performing MigrationScenario 2

In this scenario, you perform a wipe-and-load migration using the external hard driveto temporarily store the files and settings

from the Windows 7 operating system. Then, after performing a clean installation of

Windows 8, you transfer the files and settingsfrom the external drive back to the

    computer.

    Using the User StateMigration Tool

The User State Migration Tool (USMT) has thesame basic capabilities as Windows EasyTransfer; however, USMT is a command-line

program that lacks a graphical interface. USMT includes two separate command-line

    programs:

o Scanstate.exe: Saves user profile data.

    o Loadstate.exe: Restores previously-saved userprofile data.

Folder Redirection Folder redirection is a Windows 8 feature

that is a means of storing a copy of certainuser profile folders on another computer,

usually a file server. To implement folder redirection on Windows

8, join the workstation to an Active DirectoryDomain Services domain and create Group

Policy settings that specify which folders toredirect and where to store them.
